Item PRODUCTIVITY AND NATURAL STORAGE BEHAVIOUR OF TRUE POTATO SEED PROGENIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2002) ROY, TUHIN SUVRATwenty True Potato Seed (IPS) progenies supplied from Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BAR!) were evaluated during 2000-2001 Rr their yield potential in seedling tuber generation (F 1 C0 ) at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAl)), Dhaka. Among them only nine progenies were selected as promising and evaluated iii their first clonal generation ([-',C l ) along with a check variety, Diamant for keeping quality under natural storage condition. The selected progenies were further evaluated in field during 200 1-2002 at same location. There existed si"nilicant variation among the progenies in seedling tuber generation for important plant growth parameters. In first clonal generation, the progenies showed significant variation for all the plant growth parameters studied except number and weight of tubers hill'. Tuberlets yield h&') was found to he highly correlated with foliage coverage, plant height, number of tuberlets plani', number of tuherlets m 2 and luherlek yield (kg 111-2 ) and direct cCkct was observed with these characters towards increasing tuberlets yield. Regarding post-harvest behaviour under natural storage, small and medium sized tubers performed significantly better storage life compared to large tubers. All the progenies showed superior storage life xvii (weight loss, rottage loss, days to sprouting and shrivelling etc.) than the check variety, Diamant. Based on both productivity and post-harvest behaviour under natural storage condition, the performances of three progenies namely; HPS-36419, HPS-9/67 and HPS-364/67 were found satisfactory.Item EFFECT OF SOWING DATE ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF RAPESEED VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) HOSSEN, MD. AFZALThe study was carried out at the Field Laboratory of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka during October 2004 to February 2005 to evaluate the effect of sowing date and variety on yield and yield components of rapeseed (Brass/ca campesiris and Brassica napus). The treatments comprised of four sowing dates at 15-days interval on viz. October 20, November 4, November 19 and December 4 and three varieties viz. Improved Tori-7, BARI Sarisha-8 and BARI Sarisha-9. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design. The results showed that BARI Sarisha-8 performed best by producing 52.4 % and 132.9 % higher yield than BARI Sarisha-9 and Improved Tori-7, respectively. This variety (BARI Sarisha-8) also showed higher siliquae planf', seeds siIiqua, siliqua length. 1000 seed weight, shelling percentage, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index. In case of sowing date, grain yield reduced gradually with the advancement of delay in sowing. October 20 sowing gave maximum grain yield (1422 kg ha) and that of lowest (437.2 kg ha S ') was observed in December 4. BARI Sarisha-8 on October 20 sowing produced the significantly highest grain yield (1865 kg hi') and the lowest (130 kg ha") was found in Improved Tori-7 on December 4 sowing. The variety BARI Sarisha-8 and October 20 sowing performed best in respect of grain yield as well as other studied parameters.Item RESPONSE OF NITROGEN AND SULPHUR ON TUE YIELD OF RAPESEED (Brassica campestris) LINE SAU-C-F7(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) ISLAM, MD. SUOFIKULAn experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agi icultural University Farm during the Rabi season 2004-2005 (October to February) to examine the response of nitrogen and sulphur on the growth, yield attributes and yield of newly developed rapeseed (Brass/ca campesins) line SAU-C-F,. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with 3 replications. There were four different levels of nitrogen viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha and four levels of sulphur viz. 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha. Nitrogen and sulphur significantly influenced the growth, yield and yield attributers of rapeseed. Plant height, dry matter, crop growth rate, branches per plant, length of main inflorescence, number of siliquae in the main inflorescence, siliquae per plant, seed yield, stover yield, harvest index and oil yield were significantly influenced by both nitrogen and sulphur. Oil content was only influenced by S application. The results revealed that nitrogen at the rate of 120 kg/ha showed the best performance in all respect. The highest seed yield (2.37 tIha) was obtained with 120 kg N/ha while control treatment gave the lowest yield (0.66 t/ha). It was also observed that sulphur application at the rate of 30 kg/ha gave the best results while control treatments showed the lowest results. Application of sulphur at the rate of 30 kg/ha produced the maximum seed yield 0.66 tlha). The interaction effect of nitrogen and sulphur revealed that 120 kg N in combination with 30 kg S/ha showed the best performance in most of the cases whereas, the combination affect of control treatments showed the worst performance.Item INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND NAPHTHALENE ACETIC ACID ON THE YIELD OF SUMMER MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata (L.)Wilezek) cv. BARN mung-3(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) MD. ROKONUZZAMANic experiment was cathed out in experimental field of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultuml University. Dhaka to investigate the effect of nitrogen and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on growth, yield contributing characters and yield of summer mungbean (cv. BAR! mung-3) during summer season of 2005. Four levels of nitrogen viz, 0, 20, 40 and 60kg N ha"and three concentrations of NAA viz. 0, 25 and 50 ppm were used as experimental variables. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that nitrogen and NAA interacted significantly on most of the growth; yield parameters and yield of mungbean. Plant height, number of leaves, total dry weight of plant, number of flowers, number of pods per plant, 1000 seed weight and seed yield increased significantly by 20 kg N ha4 in combination with 25 ppm of NAA.Item YIELD AND QUALITY OF JUTE SEED (0-72) AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT DATES AND METHODS OF SOWING IN THE LATE SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) ALOM, MD. FERDAUSULAn experiment was conducted at experimental field of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Regional Station. Rangpur during July 2004 to January 2005. Seed quality components were tested in the Laboratory of' the Agronomy Division of WRI. Dhaka. The objectives were to find out the appropriate sowing dale. sowing method and interaction effect of sowing date and sowing method on the yield and quality of jute seed in the late season. The experiment consisted of five sowing dates viz.. July IS. July 30, Auuust 15, August 30 and September 15: two sowing methods viz., line and broadcast with a variety 0-72. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Results showed that sowing date significantly affected seed yield and yield components. The higher seed yield (1167.20 kg hi') obtained from the crops sown on August 15 compared to the crops of other sowing dates. The seed produced from August IS sowing also gave better pertorinanee regarding seed quality express as 1000 seed weight (2.16 g). germination percentage (96.00%). vigour index (67.39) and moisture content (10.19%). There was signilleant effect found in seed yield clue to sowing methods. l3ttt sowing methods signilicaiitly afiected the seed quality components. The seed 110 ,-, produced from line sowing gave die highest 1000 seed weight (2.09 g), germination percentage (93.30%), and lowest moisture content (10.43%) over broadcast sowing where vigour index was unaiTheted. The seed yield was significantly atiëeted by the interaction ol sowing date and sowing method. The highest seed yield (11 S7.70 kg ha'') obtained from the crops sown on August 15 in line sowing method. The vigour index of jute seed was significantly affected due to interaction effect of sowing date and sowing method where other quality components such as 1000 seed weight, germination percentage and moisture content remained ttnaffeeted. The seed obtained fran, the crops sown on August IS gave the higher valtie of vigour index (66.89 and 67.89 for line and broadcast sowing respectively) in both the sowing methods. The crops sown on August 15. in any ol' the sowing methods either line sowing or broadcast sowing produced higher yield of quality seed.Item PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON THE QUALITY OF KENAF (Habiscus can,zahinus L) SEED AS AFFECTED BY STORAGE PERIOD, TYPE OF CONTAINER AND GENOTYPE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) AKTHER, SHAMIMAThis study aimed to determine the storage performance of kenaf seeds and type of container used during storage. Study also aimed to Find out the probable causes of seed deterioration. The experiments were conducted from December 2004 to June 2005. Results revealed that tin container was found less permeable to moisture transmission compared with jute sack and tin container also retained higher seed quality attributes throughout the storage period. Results from the experiments on biochemical basis of seed deterioration showed that no appreciable difference of sugar content was detected in fresh seeds and seeds those were stored in airtight tin container. But significant increase of sugar content in all genotype was recorded when seeds were stored in jute sack. Again after storage in jute sack, signiFicant decrease of protein content was observed in all genotype but no appreciable change was recorded in seeds stored in tin containerItem PERFORMANCE OF RAPESEED (Brassica campestris) LINE SAU-C-F7 TO DIFFERENT ROW SPACING AND IRRIGATION LEVEL(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005-12) HASANUZZAMAN, MIRZAAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomic field of Shcr-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 on silly clay loam soil during the period from October, 2004 to January, 2005 to find out the optimum row spacing and irrigation level for the rapeseed line SAU-C-F7. The experiment was carried out with three row spacings (20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm) and 3 levels of irrigation (no irrigation. one irrigation at 30 DAS and two irrigations at 30 and 60 DAS). The experiment was laid OUI in split-plot design with four replications. Row spacing and irrigation level significantly influenced the growth, development and yield of the rapeseed line. Among the row spacings. the widest spacing (40 cm) influenced plant to have maximum above ground fresh weight, dry matter and its partition, umber of siliquae, number of seeds siliqua-1, number of seeds, number of branches, 1000-seed weight, seed yield and also seed yield ha-1. But. the maximum plant height and number of plant m-2 was round with closer row spacing (20 cm). Maximum seed yield plant-1at 40 cm row spacing of was 29.34% and 1.3% higher than 20 cm row spacing (St) and 30 cm row spacing (S2),respectively. Two irrigation - one at 30 DAS (pre-flowering stage) and another at 60 DAS (siliquae developmental stage) increased economic yield with higher values of harvest index as the yield attributes like branches plant-1, siliquae plant-1, seeds siliqua-1. Seeds plant-1, 1000-seed weight. The number of plants m-2 was found similar under different irrigation level. The increased seed yield plant-1 with two irrigations was 364.6 % and 84.2 % higher than no irrigation and one irrigation is respectively. In most of the cases the wider row spacing coupled with two irrigations were found to be influenced for better growth and yield of plant. The highest seed yield per plant was found with the interaction of two irrigations and 40 cm row spacing. This was achieved due to maximum number of branches plant-1, number or siliquae plant-1 and 1000-seed weight. The yield attributes were supported with appreciable production of dry matter and its partition towards different parts. Number of branches plant--1, number of siliquae plant-1, number of seeds siliqua-1, number of seed plant-1, 1000•seed weight had a significant correlation with seed yield plant-1 with the r values of 0.95**, 0.97**, 0.67*, 0.96** and 0.94**. They were also positively correlated with each other.Item PERFORMANCE OF WHEAT-BUSHBEAN INTERCROPPJNG UNDER DIFFERENT ROW RATIOS(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) HOWLADER, SUJITAn experiment on the performance of wheat - bushhean intercropping at different row ratios (3:1, 4:1, 5:1, 6:1, 3:2, 4:2, 5:2, 6:2, 7:2 and 8:2) along with the sole wheat and hushbean was conducted at the Agronomy Field, Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhakai 207 during the period from December, 2005 to March. 2006. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. At the maturity, seeds were harvested, while at the vegetative stage, fresh pods of bushbean were considered as yield. Among the intercroppin g, patterns, the highest wheat equivalent yield values of 5.095 and 4.734 were obtained with 3:2 row ratios of wheat and bushhean intercropping pattern at maturity and vegetative stages respectively. It was observed that the highest land equivalent ratio value was obtained with 4:1 row ratio at maturity stage while with 3:2 row ratio at vegetative stage. The highest monetary advantage (Tk.t7355.40/lia) was found with 3:2 row ratio when pods of bushhean were harvested at marketable size. But when crops were grown for seed production, the highest monetary advantage (1k. 4466.67 /hia) was found with 4:1 row ratio.Item EFFECT OF ROW ARRANGEMENT AND NITROGEN ON THE YIELD OF MAIZE INTERCROPPED WITU MUNGBEAN(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) AHAD, ABUL KALAM MUHAMMADAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field at Sher-e-Ban€zla Agricultural University. Dhaka during the period from March to June 2006 to study the effect of row arrangement and nitrogen on the yield of maize intereropped with mungbean. The experiment was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBI)) with 3 replications. The treatments were T 1 =Solc maize nonnal row (MNR) with 120 kg N.fha.T 2 Sole maize paired row (MPR) with 120 kg N/ha, T MNR + 2 mungbean rows with 120 kg N/ha. T 4 = MNR ± 2 mungbean rows with 60 kg N/ha, T 5 = MPR - 5 mungbean rows with 120 kg N/ha. T (, = MPR 1 5 mungbean rows with 60 kg N/ha, T 7 = Sole inungbean with 30 kg N/ha. In all the treatments, the reeommcnded plant population of maize (55,555 plants/ha) was maintained. Recommend plant population of mungbean (3.33,333 plants/ha) in sole situation and (2,22.222 plants/ha) in intercropped treatments were maintained. Maximum grain yield of maize (4283.00 kg/ha) and mungbean (1.087.00 kg/ha) were obtained in T 1 and 17. respectively. 1-lighest maize equivalent yield (6002.00 kg/ha) was found in T 5 and the lowest (3623.30 kg/ha) in 17 . Land equivalent ratio (LER) vaied from 22 to 53% in the different treatments. Highest LER (1.53) was found in Ic which also gave maximum net return (T139000.00/1ta) with benefit cost ratio (BCR) (2.60). Lower LER (1.22) was recorded T.1.Item SEED YIELD AND OIL QUALITY OF RAPESEED AS iNFLUENCED BY DATE OF PLANTING(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) BHUIYAN, MOHAMMAD SARFUDDINAn experiment was conducted at the Agrictilture Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, l3urirhat, Rangpur during rahi -,Cason of 2004-05 to find out optimum planting time for the newly selected genotype I3CYS-03. There were five planting dates viz. October 20, October 30, November 10, November20 and November 30. Significant variations due to dillerent planting dates were observed in days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches plant', seed yield plant 4, siliqua plant'. seeds siliqua'. 1000-seed weight, seed yield hi', biological yield ha 4and dry weight plant'. Results showed that the highest seed yield (1.86 t ha') was obtained from the second planting (October 30) and it was significantly different from the yields of all other dates of planting. Yield contributing characters were also found higher in the plants of second planting. The seed yield (1.47 t ha') of last planting was also satisfactory because of the prolong winter season prevails in the northern part of the country. Variations in respect of oil content in seed and fatty acid composition of oil were also obtained from different planting dates. Seeds obtained from the early plantings contained higher oil percentage in seed and lower concentration ofenicic acid in oil. Variations of oleic, linoleie and linolenic acids in oil also observed due to dillèmnt planting dates.Item EFFECT OF IRRIGATION ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOYBEAN (Glycine maxL.) VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) JAHAN, SHIRIN ROWSHAN ARAAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1 207 during the period from December, 2005 to April, 2006 to study the responses of soybean varieties to the time of irrigation. The experiment was carried out with three soybean varieties viz. Shohag, Bangladesh soybean-4 and BARI soybean-5 and five levels of irrigation viz, no irrigation, irrigation at elongation of main stem (EMS), irrigation at flowering (F), irrigation at pod development (PD) and one irrigation each at EMS±F-fPD stages of crop growth. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The results showed that variety and irrigation level significantly influenced the growth, development, yield characters and yield of the soybean. Among the three varieties, BARI soybean-5 influenced plants to have maximum dsy matter, number of branches plant' 1 , pod length, number of seeds pod', seed yield, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index. But the plant height and number of pods plant' 1 were found highest in Bangladesh soybean4. The grain yield status among the three varieties in this experiment was that the BARI soybean-5 out yielded Shohag and Bangladesh soybean-4, by 6.93% and 0.28%, respectively. Irrigation at EMS+F+PD stages increased yield with higher values of harvest index as the yield attributes like branches plani', pods plant 4 , seeds pod', pod length and 100- seed weight were higher. Application of irrigation at different times significantly Ill increased seed yield ranging from 23.94% to 96.92% compared to the control (no irrigation). In most of the cases BARI soybean-5 coupled with irrigation at EMS+F+PD was found to be influenced for better growth and yield. The highest seed yield was found with the interaction of BAR! soybean-5 with irrigation given at EMS+F+PD stages. This was achieved due to rna'cjmum number of branches plani', number of seeds pod' and greater pod length. The higher yield attributes were achieved with abundant production of dry matter due to irrigation at EMS+F+PD stages.Item INTERCROPPING FODDER CRASSPEA WITH WHEAT AT DIFFERENT FERTILIZER DOSES AND SEED RATES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) ISLAM, MD. ENAMULAn experinient on the performance of wheat - grasspea intcrcropping at different fertilizer dose (100 and 120% of recommended dose for wheat) and seed rates of grasspea (100%. 80%. 60%, 40% and 20%) was conducted at the Agronomy Field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka-1207 during the period from December, 2005 to March. 2006. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Significantly higher yields of wheat (3.00 - 3.0$ I/ha) were obtained with wheat, wheat 100% ± grasspea 20% 4 fertilizer 100% and wheat 100% 1 grasspea 100% + fertilizer 120% treatments. Significantly the highest fodder yield (1.47 (/ha) was obtained with the treatment of wheat 100% + grasspea 100% + fertilizer 120%, The best land equivaleni ratio (LER), benefit: cost ratio (13CR) and tolal net return were 1.96, 1.558 and 14466.50 Tk./ha respectively and these were obtained with the treatment of wheat 100% + grasspea 100% + fertilizer 120%. So, fodder grasspea may be intercropped with wheat using the recommended seed rate under 120% recommended fertilizer dose of wheat.Item EFFECT OF SEEDLING AGE ON THE YIELD OF MODERN VARIETIES OF AROMATIC RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) HOSSAIN, MOHAMMAD ANWARAn experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from July to I)ecember, 2006 to study the effect of seedling age on the yield of aromatic varieties. The experiment consisted of two levels of treatments viz. 4' variety (BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38) and seedling age (IS, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 days old). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (Factorial) with three replications. The results revealed that BRRI dhan38 performed the best than BRRI dhan37. The highest grain yield (3.08 t/ ha), number of total tiller/ hill, effective tiller! hill. 1000-grain weight, harvest index and the longest panicle were attained from BRRI dhan38. Seedling age also significantly influenced all crop characters studied. The results also revealed that 30 days old seedlings showed the best performance than other seedling ages treatment. The highest grain yield (3.3 tiha), number of effective tillers/ hill, number of total spikelets/ panicle, grain! panicle, I 000-grain weight and the longest panicle were obtained from 30 days old seedlings whereas the highest plant height, number of total and non-effective tiller were found in 15 days old seedlings. Combination of BRRI dhan38 with 30 days old seedlings was found to be the best in respect of sterile spikelets! panicle. 1000-grain weight and grain yield.Item INFLUENCE OF PLANTING TECHNIQUE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF AMAN RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) MAIN, MD. ABDULA field experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during June to November, 2005 to study the influence of planting technique on growth and yield of aman rice. The experiment consisted three levels of treatments viz, A. Planting material (3): Sprouted seed (M,), Nursery seedling (M 2) and Clonal tiller (M3 ); B. Variety (2): Inbreed variety (SRI I, Mukta)-V, and Hybrid variety (Sonar Bangla-1)-V2; C. Planting method (2): Broadcast (Th) and Line sowing (T2 ). The experiment was laid out in a split- split-plot design with four replications. Experimental results showed that planting material had significant effect on all the agronomie parameters like plant height, number of tillers hilr', Leaf area index (LA!), Total dry weight, flowering and maturity dates, filled grain panicl&', 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index except effective tillers hill'. The results revealed that clonal tiller (M3 ) showed the best performance than other planting material. The highest grain yield (4.96 t hi') and second highest straw yield (5.22 t hi') were obtained from clonal tiller while nursery seedling gave the second highest grain yield (4.50 t hi') and lowest straw yield (5.20 ton hi'). The lowest grain yield (4.24 t hi') and highest straw yield (5.47 t hi) obtained from the sprouted seeds. Variety also significantly influenced all the growth and yield attributes except effective tillers hill', straw yield and harvest index The highest grain yield (4.70 t hi') and lowest straw yield were obtained from hybrid variety Sonar bangla-1, and the inbreed variety BRII gave the lowest grain yield (4.43 t ha") and highest straw yield. Methods of planting had significant effect only on grain yield and harvest index and other parameter were insignificant. The result also reveled that line sowing method showed better performance than broadcast method, where highest grain yield (4.81 t hi') was obtained from line sowing method and the lowest grain yield hi) was got from the broadcast method. Maximum harvest index 0.48 was counted in line sowing and 0.45 in haphazard method. The combined effect of planting material, variety and planting method had also significant effect on growth and yield, the highest grain yield was obtained from the clonal tiller of hybrid variety with line sowing method.Item EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND IRRIGATION MANAGEMENTS ON THE YIELD ATTRIBUTES AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) MD. The trial comprised often treatments such as T1 control. 12 20 kg N ha 4 as basal. 13=20 kg N ha4 as basal with one irrigation at first flowering stage, 1 4 =30 kg N ha" as basal. T5 30 kg N hzi' as basal with one irrigation at first flowering stage. •1'--40 kg N ha" as basal. 'F 40 kg N as basal with one irrigation at first flowering stage. lhasal 10 kg N ha' and 10 kg N h&' as split with one irrigation at first flowering stage, l 9=bacal 15 kg N ha'' and 15 kg N ha'' as split with one irrigation at first flowering stage and 1, 0—basal 20 kg N h& and 20 kg N ha'' as split with one irrigation at first flowering stage. Irrespective of treatment di rierenees the mungbcan plant as a pulse crop showed a lag phase in early growth stage (up to 40 DAS) while increase of growth parameters like number of leaves, leaf dry weight and steam dry weight per plant very slow. Thus, initiation of flowers (35 DAS) caused low dry matter production. Application of 30 kg N ha'' as basal with one irrigation at first flowering stage (35 DAS) improved the growth parameters significantly. This greater dry matter eventually supported the plant to produce more number of branches and pods per plant. which resulted with maximum seed yield per plant (5.53 g) or per hectare (1.65 ton). SAU Sarisha- I.Item INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT CULTIVATION METHODS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) AHMED, QUAZI NASIMA field experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field Laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from December 2005 to May 2006 to study the influence of different cultivation methods on hybrid and inbred rice in horo season. The experiment consisted of two level of treatments viz, variety and cultivation method. The experiment was laid out in spi it-plot design with four replications. Experimental results showed that variety had significant effect on all the agronomic parameters except panicle length. total grains panicle", straw yield and biological yield. The highest grain yield (8.26 t ha") with lowest straw y ield (7.25 I ha")was obtained from Sonarhangla-1 and BRRI dha.n 29 gave the lowest grain yield (7.53 t ha") with highest straw yield (9.58 t ha"). Cultivation method also significantly influenced all the growth and yield attributes except unfilled grains paniele". 1000-grains weight and straw yield. The results revealed that nursery seedlings showed the best performance compared to other cultivation method. The highest grain yield (8.73 t ha") and straw yield (9.21 I ha") was obtained from the nursery seedlings and the lowest grain yield (7.23 1 ha") and straw yield (7.19 t ha'1 ) was obtained from the SRI. Maximum harvest index 52.47 was calculated in the SRI and minimum harvest index 46.22 was thund in the sprouted seeds broadcast. 'Fillers hill" of SRI was the highest among the treatments, however, it failed to perform well in terms of effective tillers rn'2 . though sprouted seeds sown in line and broadcast showed opposite trends. The plants from sprouted seeds and SRI matured early compared to the nursery seedlings and clonal tillers. Sprouted seeds of the hybrid variety sown in line required 113 days, which is 33 days less than the required time for the traditional method of the inbred rice variety.Item EFFECT OF NITROGEN LEVELS AND NUMBER OF WEEDING ON TUE YIELD YIELD ATTRIBUTES AND QUALITY OF RAPESEED(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) RASHID, ROSIINIA field experiment was conducted in the Rahi season (November-February) of 2005-2006 to study the response of rapeseed line SAU-C-1- 7 in respect of yield, yield attributes and oil yield to difibrent nitrogen levels and number of weeding. The treatment comprised of 4 levels of nitrogen and 3 levels of weeding. Different N levels were 0 kg N ha (N 0 ). 90 kg N hi' (N 1 ). 120 kg N hi' ( '2) (N3 ). The weeding treatments were no weeding (W and 150 kg N ha" 0 ). one weeding at 20 DAS (Wi) and two weedings at 20 and 45 DAS (W2). The experiment was laid out in a Ihetorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Nitrogen levels and number of weeding significantly influenced the growth, yield and yield attributes of rapeseed. 'l'he maximum seed yield ha4 (2343.4 kg ha 4 ) with 120 kg N ha" was 194.28 0 %. 71.11% and 6.87% higher than the yield obtained from 0 kg, 90 kg and ISO kg N ha''. respectively. In case of weeding factor, it was observed that two hand weeding resulted in maximum production of yield and yield attributes as well as seed and oil yields. Two hand weeding increased the seed yield by 17.66% over control. The interaction effect of nitrogen levels and number of weeding revealed that 120 kg N along with two hand weeding showed the best performance in producing the yield attributes and yields. AMAN RICE VARIETIES AS AFFECTED BY SEEDLING NUMBER HILL 1 AND UREA SUPERGRANULES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2006) MASUM, SHEIKH MUHAMMADA field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-iIangla agricultural university during July to December 2007 to find out the effect of four levels of seedling hill4 vii; I. 13 and 4 and two forms of nitrogen fertilizer-prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranules (USC) on growth, yield and yield components of modem (BRRI Dhan 44) and traditional (Nizershail) transplant oman rice. The experiment was laid out in a split- split-plot design with three replications. Urea was top dressed 58 kg N haS ' in three equal splits at 10, 30 and 50 DAT. The USC (1.8 g) was placed at 5-10cm soil depth at 10 DAT in the center of four hills in alternate rows 1 granule in one spot to supply 58 kg N haS '. Results showed that rice varieties differed significantly in all growth characters and BRRI Dhan 44 produced higher grain yield (4.85 t ha'). Two seedlings hill' gave the highest grain yield (3.96 t hi') while four seedlings hill' had the highest numbers of total tiller hill', leaf area index and total dry matter. USC performed well in growth and gave higher grain yield (12.2%) over PU. Interaction results showed that significantly higher grain yields were given by transplanting one seedling of 13RRl Dhan 44 (5.38 t hi'), application of USC in I3RRI Dhan 44 (5.08 t hi') and transplanting one seedling hilr' with application USC (4.18 t had) and finally placement of USC by transplanting one seedling hill' of BRRI Dhan 44 (5.77 hi'). The higher grain yield was attributed mainly to the number of effective tillers bill', filled grains panicle' and 1000-grain weight.Item GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.) Shourav. The treatment consists of four nitrogen levels (0. 60, 100 and 140 kg hi') and four seed rates (80, 100, 120 and 140 kg hi'). The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Experiment results showed that nitrogen had significant effect on plant height, dry matter accumulation, crop growth rate, relative growth rate, number of total tillers per in2 , number of effective tillers per 7fl2• L.) AS spike length, number of fertile spikelets spikc', number of unfertile spikelets spike', 1000 grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index. The results revealed that nitrogen at the rate of 100 kg hi' showed the best performance in all the parameters studied. The highest grain yield (3.3 t hi') and straw yield (4.36 t hi') was obtained from 100 kg N had while control treatment gave the lowest grain and straw yield of 2.19 and 3.1 ton ha1 respectively. The grain and straw yields increased correspondingly with the increase of N frorn C) to 100 kg hi' and decreased thereafter. Seed rate of 120 kg ha 1 gave the highest grain yield (3.08 t hi') and seed rate of 140 kg ha1 gave the highest straw yield (4.27 t hi') of wheat. Among the various interactions, nitrogen at the rate of 100 kg along with 120 kg seed ha produced the highest grain yield of 3.65 t ha 1.
