Item FERTILITY MANAGEMENT OF A NEWLY DEVELOPED GENOTYPE OF PEA (Pisum sativzzrn L.)(Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Department of Soil Science, 1999) PAUL, ALOK KUMARA field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University farm (lUring the period from November 10, 1997 to March 1. 1998 to determine the optimum requirement of N, P, and K for maximum yield of the advanced line (Local \Vhite) of pea. There were 14 treatment combinations comprising of four levels of N (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg N/ha), four levels of p (0. 50. 75, and 100 kg P05/ha). 4 levels of K (0, 30, 60, and 90 kg K 2 R/iizobiuni strain (N 0 and N,04. 0 0/ha), two levels of inoculum as a 3. and one level of organic matter (cow dung) at the rate of 10 c/ha. Moderate rate of N. P. and K application (N 60 kg, P K1 0 : 60 kg/ha) was found to be the balanced combination of the nutrient elements to give the highest yield of green pod (13.12 f/ha) and matured seed (2.27 t/ha) and the maximum total uptake of N (123.62 kg/ha), P (4.78 205 75 kg, and kg/ha), and K (69.03 kg/ha) by the plants and as well as the largest sized green seeds (41.51 g) and matured seeds (17.68 g) per 100 seeds. Although. the lughest level of N application (90 kg/ha) with the same rates of P and K application produced the tallest plants (94.44 cm), maximum number of branches per plant (3.02) and the highest number of pods per plant (8.07) gave 4.5 % lower yield of green pods and 19.3 % lower yield of matured seeds and as well as 3.21 % lower uptake of N, 1.46 % P. and 13.42 % K as compared.to the highest yield and the highest nutrient uptake observed under moderate application of nutrients strain along with one third of optimum N (20 kg/ha) and moderate amount of P and K (75 kg P,O and 60 kg K elements. Seed inoculation with Rhizobiwn 2 0/ha) was found to be encouraging to give satisfactory and acceptable yield of 12.37 t/ha of green pod (only 5.7% lower than the highest yield) of pea. From the viewpoint of yield and nutrient uptake of garden pea and the nutrient requirement of the crop, the N, P. and K combination at the rates of 60 kg N, 75 kg PO, and 60 kg K 2 0/ha was considered to be die balanced combination of fertilizer nutrients for achieving the maximum output through cultivation of pea in Shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil of BSMRAU farm.Item Tolerance of Trichoderma, Gliocladium and Sclerotium to Agrochemicals and biocontrol potency of Trichoderma and Gliocladium(DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PATHOLOGY, 2000) Chowdhury, Mohammad Salah uddin Mahmoodn-vitro test reveled that Trichoderma harzianum could tolerate Vitavax, Tilt 250EC, Ridornil and Thiovit at 10001Jg/ml, while Gliocladium viride could grow better on PDA containing Ridomil and Thiovit. Trichoderma harzianum and Gliocladium viride could not tolerate even 100IJg/ml of Bavistin. On the other hand, Sclerotium rolfsii could not tolerate Vitavax, Tilt 250EC and Ridomil even at lOOlJglml, but Bavistin and Thiovit reduced the growth of Sclerotium rolfsii by 86.18% and 75.64%, respectively at 1000~glm) and IOOJ.1g1ml.Out of the nutrient elements tested, N, K, S and Mn reduced the growth of Trichoderma harzianum while slight induction in growth was recorded by P and Cu. Except P, the tested metal salts reduced the growth of Gliocladium vir ide, where higher concentration of Imetal salts in medium resulted- higher inhibition of growth. Nutrients showed inhibition of growth of Sclerotium rolfsii at increasing the cone. in medium. The antagonists were found potential against Sclerotium rolfsii. Seed treatment with antagonists resulted upto 21.61%, 53.5%, 26.64% and 48.43% increase in germination in mungbean, blackgram, pigeon pea and tomato, respectively and showed good effect on seed borne mycoflora. Moreover, significant growth enhancement of mungbean, blackgram and tomato have been achiev.ed by treating seeds with antagonists.Item PRODUCTIVITY AND NATURAL STORAGE BEHAVIOUR OF TRUE POTATO SEED PROGENIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2002) ROY, TUHIN SUVRATwenty True Potato Seed (IPS) progenies supplied from Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BAR!) were evaluated during 2000-2001 Rr their yield potential in seedling tuber generation (F 1 C0 ) at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAl)), Dhaka. Among them only nine progenies were selected as promising and evaluated iii their first clonal generation ([-',C l ) along with a check variety, Diamant for keeping quality under natural storage condition. The selected progenies were further evaluated in field during 200 1-2002 at same location. There existed si"nilicant variation among the progenies in seedling tuber generation for important plant growth parameters. In first clonal generation, the progenies showed significant variation for all the plant growth parameters studied except number and weight of tubers hill'. Tuberlets yield h&') was found to he highly correlated with foliage coverage, plant height, number of tuberlets plani', number of tuherlets m 2 and luherlek yield (kg 111-2 ) and direct cCkct was observed with these characters towards increasing tuberlets yield. Regarding post-harvest behaviour under natural storage, small and medium sized tubers performed significantly better storage life compared to large tubers. All the progenies showed superior storage life xvii (weight loss, rottage loss, days to sprouting and shrivelling etc.) than the check variety, Diamant. Based on both productivity and post-harvest behaviour under natural storage condition, the performances of three progenies namely; HPS-36419, HPS-9/67 and HPS-364/67 were found satisfactory.Item GENETIC STIDIFJS ON EDIBLE POD YIELD IN F2 DIALLEL POPULATION OF LABLAB BEAN (Lablabpurpureus L.)(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2002-11) RAHMAN, JAM ILURA 6 x 6 F2 diallel experiment (without reciprocal) on Lablab bean (Lablab purpurezt L.) was conducted to study combining ability and inheritance in some selected genotypes for pod yield and other related characters such as flowering, pod setting, no. of inllorescences per plant, no. of flowers per inflorescence, no. of pods per inflorescence, inflorescence length, pod length, pod width, 10-pod weight and 20-seed weight. There were significant variations among the genotypes for all the characters studied. Variances for general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sea) were significant for ten out of eleven characters including pod yield per plant, suggesting the presence of both additive and non-additive components in the genetic systems of these characters. For days to l' flowering and I St pod setting, the genetic system was predominantly of non-additive gene action. The parental genotype DS-52 was found to be the best general combiner for early flowering, pod setting and 20-seed weight. The parent DSN-26 was the best general combiner for inflorescences per plant, pod length, pod width, 10-pod weight and also for pod yield per plant. For sea effect the cross DS-52 x DS-161 and DS-30 x DSN-26 were the best specific combiners for early flowering and early pod setting. For 10- pod weight and pod yield per plant the cross DSN-26 x KBS-3 and DS-30 x KBS-2 were the best specific combiners. Vr-Wr analysis relating to graphical presentation of major genetic features were done for all the eleven characters. Complete dominance was observed for pod yield per plant, partial dominance for no, of flowers per inflorescence, pod length, 10-pod weight, and 20-seed weight. While overdominance was recorded for days to l flowering, days to 1M pod setting, no. of infloreseenees per plant, no. of pods per inflorescence, inflorescence length and pod width. Components of variation and various genetic parameters such as degree of dominance, dominance ratio, narrow sense heritability etc. were estimated. Results showed that positive and negative alleles were in unequal proportion among the parents for all characters. The dominant alleles were in excess for all characters except pod length, pod width and 20-seed weight. Dominant and recessive genes were unequally distributed in the parents for all characters. High narrow sense heritability was observed for pod yield per plant and 10-pod weight, whereas for the others it was moderate to poor.Item MIXING ABILITY AND INTER.-GENOTYPIC COMPETITION FROM 7x7 UNIBLENDS AND BIBLENDS OF SOYBEAN GENOTYPES(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2002-11) MAIIMUD, FIROZMixing ability and inter-genotypic competition from 70 mechanical diallel mixtures excluding reciprocals of Soybean (Glycine mat L.) were studied, during November 2001-April 2002, under two experimental sets which provided for intra-row and interrow mixing of genotypes in biblend, designated respectively as Set I and Set 11, as well as uniblend stand in both. The significant differences among the genotypes were found for all the traits examined. The mean performance analysis showed that, the genotype PM-78 had earliness for flowering and maturity, and the biblends PM-fl + Ramsom and BS-3+ 85-16 exhibited earliest flowering and maturity behaviour. The genotype G-2 showed the best performance for pods/plant, seeds/plant, yield/plant, biological yield/plant, and yield/plot. Variances due to general mixing ability (GMA) and specific mixing ability (SMA) were significant for most of the traits. The predominant role of OMA variances were affirmed in all the characters studied. The genotype PM-iS was found to be the best general mixer for earliness in flowering and maturity in both experimental sets. The genotype BS-16 was found to be a good general mixer for plant height, branches/plant, yield/plant, biological yield/plant, and yield/plot in both the experimental sets. The genotype G-2 had a good mixing ability for pods/plant, seeds/S-pods and seeds/plant in the both experimental sets. Whilst the genotype BS-60 was found to be a good general mixer for harvest index in both experiments, as revealed by thcir respective uniblend stand. The mixture (biblend) BS-60 + 85-16 was earliest in flowering and maturity. The plant mixture BS-3+BS-16 was found to be a good specific mixer for plant height, branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/plant, yield/plant, biological yield/plant, and yield/plot in experimental Set-I. But in experimental Set-Il, the mixture P13-l+BS-16 was found to be a good mixer for branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/S-pods, seeds/plant, yield/plant, biological yield/plant, yield/plot and 100-seed weight. For experimental Set I, the biblend BS-3+BS-16 and for experimental Set lithe biblend PB-I +BS-1 6 were the best specific mixers.Item EFFECT OF BION, AMISTAR AND VITAVAX ON SOME FUNGAL DISEASES OF PEANUT(DEPARTMENT OF PLANT PATHOLOGY, 2003) Sultana, NazneenEffect of seed treatment with Bien (Benzothiadiazole), Amistar (azoxystrobin) and Vitavax-200 (Carboxin) on germination, prevalence of seed borne fungi, seedling mortality, tikka disease of peanut var. Dhaka 1 and Jhinga badam were investigated in the laboratory and field laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period of July 2002 to May 2003. Seed health test by blotter method revealed that the seeds of peanut var. Dhaka I yielded Aspergillus niger (19.0%), A. flavus (18%), Sclerotium 1"0[(sii(2.33%), Fusarium spp. (5.0%), Rhizoctonia solani (2%), Macrophomina phase a/ina (3.0%) and Penicillium spp. (1.67%) and seeds of Jhinga badam yielded Aspergillus niger(19.3%) A. flavus (12.33%), S. rofsii (0.67%), Fusarium spp. (2.67%), R. solani (2.33%), M. phaseolina (3.33%) and Penicillium spp. (2.0%). Seed treatment with Bion (0.005% and 0.01 %), Amistar (0.05% and 0.1 %) and Vitavax-200 (0.3% of seed weight) reduced prevalence of seed borne fungi on blotter. Amistar and Vitavax-200 showed best performance in controlling seed borne fungi. Bion (0.01%), Amistar (0.05%) and Vitavax-200 (0.3% of seed weight) completely inhibited the prevalence of seed borne Sclerotium and Fusarium of peanut var. Dhaka 1 and Jhinga badam. Moreover, Amistar (0.1%) and Vitavax-200 (0.3% of seed weight) strongly inhibited the prevalence of seed borne Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina and Penicillium spp. Challenge test with Aspergillus niger showed that none of the tested chemicals had the ability to protect crown rot (Aspergillus niger) of peanut, whereas Vitavax-200 exerted best performance to control Sclerotium rolfsii and increased germination and decreased post emergence seedling mortality. Amistar showed better performance to control Fusarium oxysporum and increased germination and decreased post emergence death of seedlings. Vitavax-200 gave better performance and increased germination and decreased post emergence mortality in both the peanut varieties under field condition. Bion showed better performance regarding tikka disease (Cercospora arachidicola and Cercosporidium personatum) in reducing number of diseased leaflets /plant and incidence of leaf infection at first counting (110 days after sowing). Amistar were found to be effective to reduce number of diseased leaflets/ plant, percent leaf infection and percent leaf area diseased. Bion increased pod yield/plant and kernal yield/plant of peanut var. Myniensingh during Januan' to May 2003 to study the effect of added P. Mo and I3radyrhizobiurn inoculant on nodulation, yield and yield contributing characters of two soybean cultivaj- s, Pb-I and 0-2. The treatments were: Control, Inoculurn, P+Jnoculum, Mo+Inoculum, P+Mo+Inoculum. The rates of P, Mo and Bmdvrhizobium inoculant were 40 kg P ha 1 . 1 kg Mo ha1 and 15 g inoculant kg' seed, respectively. TSP was used as a source of!' and sodium molybdate as that of Mo. Basal application of 40 kg K had, 15kg S ha 1 and 2 kg Zn h ad was made to all plots for crop raising. The variety was placed in the main plots and the fertilizer and J3radyrliizobiutn inoculant were placed in the subplots. At 75 EMS, 10 plants were uprooted from each plot for recording data on nodulation and growth characteristics. The crop was harvested at maturity after 120 DAS. Between varieties, the 0-2 showed higher nodulation, number of pods and seeds plant 1 compared to Pb-I variety. On the other hand, variety Pb-I gave significantly higher 100-seed weight, seed and stover yields comparcd to the 0-2. Bra dyrhizobi mu inoculation significantly increased nodulation, number of pods and seeds plan(' and finally seed and stover yields of' soybean. The combined application of P and Mo with Bradyr/2izobiwn inoculation further increased the nodulacion and yield of soybean varieties. Three different intercropping practices viz. non-intercrop, Red amaranth intercrop and Bengal spinach intercrop and three levels of nitrogen viz 0, 200, 250 kg per hectare were used in the study. Carrot was sown as a sole crop at a spacing of 25 x 10 em and Red amaranth and Bengal spinach were sown in between the two rows of carrot as intererops. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Leafy vegetables intereropping had significant influence on yield and yield attributes of carrot, except, root diameter. The highest root length (16.59 ern), fresh . weight of root per plant (135 g), and marketable yield (45.40 t/ha) were recorded from control intercrop (10) and lowest were found from Bengal spinach intercrop (i2). Nitrogen (N) had remarkable effect on growth and yield of carrot. The maximum root length '(16.83 em), root diameter (4.98 ern), fresh weight of root per plant (141.40 g), and marketable yield (47.06 t/ha) were obtained from 25b kg Nlha '(N2) and minimum from control (No). In respect of combined effect control intercrop with 250 kg N/ha (lON2) produced highest root length (17.3Tcm), root diameter (5.33 em), fresh weight of root per plant (161.70 g) and marketable yield (52.13 t/ha), Highest intercrop yield (28.33 t/ha) obtained from the IlN2 (Red amaranth intercrop and 250 Kg N/ha) treatment. Economic analysis showed that Red amaranth intercrop and 250 Kg N/ha gave maximum economic benefit with the benefit cost ratio of 5.22. II j,Item EFFECTS OF MATURITY STAGES AND ETHREL ON THE RIPENING AND QUALITY OF TOMATO(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2005) RAHMAN, B.M. SAIDURAn experiment was conducted at the laboratories of the Plant Physiology section of the Horticulture Research Centre (HRC) and Post Harvest Laboratories under the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, during the period from January to March 2005 to study the effects of different stages of maturity and different concentration of ethrel treatments on changes in ripening and quality of tomato fruits during the postharvest storage. Fruits of three maturity stages viz. mature green, breaker and half-ripe were treated under three ethrel concentrations viz. control, 500 ppm ethrel and 1000 ppm ethrel. Different maturity stages, ethrel treatments and their combinations showed the highly significant variation on ripening and quality of tomato. The half ripe tomato treated with 1000 ppm ethrel gave quick colour development (3.00 days) and the highest vitamin-C (12.46 mg/lOOg tomato pulp), titrable acidity (0.456%) reducing sugar (4.50%), non reducing sugar (I.70%), total sugar (5.07%) and TSS (5.50%) at final day of observation and the mature green tomato treated with 1000 ppm ethrel showed maximum days of shelf life (37.00 days) and showed the highest pH (4.71) at the 500 ppm ethrel treatment. On the other hand, the mature green tomato under control treatment showed the highest weight loss (14.92%) at the final day of observation. The mature green tomato under control conditions showed the delay colour development or ripening (15.00 days) and the lowest vitamin-C (3.68 mg/lOOg tomato pulp), reducing sugar (3.85%) and TSS (4.49%) at the final day of observation. Half ripe tomato treated with 1000 ppm ethrel showed the lowest weight loss (14.00%), pH (4.26) and non-reducing sugar at the final day observation and green mature tomato treated with 500 ppm ethrel showed the lowest titrable acidity (0.443%) and total sugar (4.73%) and half ripe tomato with control treatment showed the lowest shelf life (20.00 days). From the investigation, it may be concluded that for early ripening half-ripe tomato treated with 1000 ppm ethrel is the best and to extend the shelf life, mature green tomato treated with 1000 ppm ethrel is the best. On the other hand, weight loss and other physio chemical characteristics were found to be the highest when half-ripe tomatos were treated with 1000 ppm ethrel.Item EFFECT OF SOWING DATE ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF RAPESEED VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) HOSSEN, MD. AFZALThe study was carried out at the Field Laboratory of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka during October 2004 to February 2005 to evaluate the effect of sowing date and variety on yield and yield components of rapeseed (Brass/ca campesiris and Brassica napus). The treatments comprised of four sowing dates at 15-days interval on viz. October 20, November 4, November 19 and December 4 and three varieties viz. Improved Tori-7, BARI Sarisha-8 and BARI Sarisha-9. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design. The results showed that BARI Sarisha-8 performed best by producing 52.4 % and 132.9 % higher yield than BARI Sarisha-9 and Improved Tori-7, respectively. This variety (BARI Sarisha-8) also showed higher siliquae planf', seeds siIiqua, siliqua length. 1000 seed weight, shelling percentage, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index. In case of sowing date, grain yield reduced gradually with the advancement of delay in sowing. October 20 sowing gave maximum grain yield (1422 kg ha) and that of lowest (437.2 kg ha S ') was observed in December 4. BARI Sarisha-8 on October 20 sowing produced the significantly highest grain yield (1865 kg hi') and the lowest (130 kg ha") was found in Improved Tori-7 on December 4 sowing. The variety BARI Sarisha-8 and October 20 sowing performed best in respect of grain yield as well as other studied parameters.Item EFFECTS OF MULCHING AND PRUNING ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)(DEPT. The pruning up to I '1 flower cluster produced highest yield (89.57 t/hu) than no pruning (89.17 I/ha) and the single stem pruning (76.53 I/ha). The highest fruit yield (103.5 t/ha) was recorded from the combination or mulching with straw and pruning up lo I '1 [lower cluster. which may be recommended for high yield or tomato.Item RESPONSE OF NITROGEN AND SULPHUR ON TUE YIELD OF RAPESEED (Brassica campestris) LINE SAU-C-F7(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) ISLAM, MD. SUOFIKULAn experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agi icultural University Farm during the Rabi season 2004-2005 (October to February) to examine the response of nitrogen and sulphur on the growth, yield attributes and yield of newly developed rapeseed (Brass/ca campesins) line SAU-C-F,. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with 3 replications. There were four different levels of nitrogen viz. 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha and four levels of sulphur viz. 0, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha. Nitrogen and sulphur significantly influenced the growth, yield and yield attributers of rapeseed. Plant height, dry matter, crop growth rate, branches per plant, length of main inflorescence, number of siliquae in the main inflorescence, siliquae per plant, seed yield, stover yield, harvest index and oil yield were significantly influenced by both nitrogen and sulphur. Oil content was only influenced by S application. The results revealed that nitrogen at the rate of 120 kg/ha showed the best performance in all respect. The highest seed yield (2.37 tIha) was obtained with 120 kg N/ha while control treatment gave the lowest yield (0.66 t/ha). It was also observed that sulphur application at the rate of 30 kg/ha gave the best results while control treatments showed the lowest results. Application of sulphur at the rate of 30 kg/ha produced the maximum seed yield 0.66 tlha). The interaction effect of nitrogen and sulphur revealed that 120 kg N in combination with 30 kg S/ha showed the best performance in most of the cases whereas, the combination affect of control treatments showed the worst performance.Item SUNFLOWER BASED INTERCROPPING WITH LEAFY VEGETABLES(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2005) MOWLA, MOHAMMAD GOLAMAn experiment was conducted at the Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2004 to February 2005 to investigate the sunflower based intercropping with leafy vegetables. There were two variety of sunflower viz. Kironi, Sunwheat-103 and four intercrop viz. non intercrop, Red amaranth, Bengal spinach and Pak-choi. The treatment combinations were set in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Growth and yield parameters were recorded and the cost benefit analysis was computed to assess the yield potentiality and profitability of sunflower and intercropping of leafy vegetable. Sunflower variety Had significant effect on plant height, number of leaves, diameter of the head, seed yield, 1000 seed weight and oil content. The highest seed yield (961.11 kg/ha) was obtained from variety Kironi. Intercroppe.d leafy vegetables intercropping had remarkable effect on growth, flowering and yield. The combinations of variety and intercrop significantly influenced the plant height, number of leaves, diameter of the head, seed yield and 1000 seed weight. The highest seed yield (1133 kg/ha) was found in the treatment combination of tall variety sunflower (Y.r) and control intercrop (Io). Highest intercrop yield (13.69 t/ha) obtained from the dwarf variety and Red amaranth intercrop (VDIL) treatment combination. Economic analysis showed that tall variety sunflower (Vr) with Red amaranth intercrop (I1J gave the best economic return (Tk 77539/ha) and benefit cost ratio of 2.4 5.Item INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND NAPHTHALENE ACETIC ACID ON THE YIELD OF SUMMER MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata (L.)Wilezek) cv. BARN mung-3(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, 2005) MD. ROKONUZZAMANic experiment was cathed out in experimental field of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultuml University. Dhaka to investigate the effect of nitrogen and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on growth, yield contributing characters and yield of summer mungbean (cv. BAR! mung-3) during summer season of 2005. Four levels of nitrogen viz, 0, 20, 40 and 60kg N ha"and three concentrations of NAA viz. 0, 25 and 50 ppm were used as experimental variables. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that nitrogen and NAA interacted significantly on most of the growth; yield parameters and yield of mungbean. Plant height, number of leaves, total dry weight of plant, number of flowers, number of pods per plant, 1000 seed weight and seed yield increased significantly by 20 kg N ha4 in combination with 25 ppm of NAA.
