Item A COMPARATIVE FINANCIAL STUDY BETWEEN POTATO AND MUSTARD PRODUCTION IN SELECTED AREAS OF GAIBANDHA DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) RAHMAN, MD. MAHABUBURThe present study was designed with a view to analyze the comparative financial aspects of the selected crops such as potato & mustard production. A total of 120 potato & mustard producing farmers were randomly selected from six villages under Gobindogonj and Polashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district. Mainly tabular analysis was done to achieve the major objectives of the study. Cobb-Douglas production function model was also used to identify and measure the specific effects of the factors on production. The findings of the study revealed that the productions of selected crops were profitable. The per hectare total costs of production of potato and mustard were Tk. 136826 and Tk. 52976, respectively and the corresponding gross incomes were Tk. 215000 and Tk. 63623, respectively. The estimated net return of producing potato and mustard were Tk. 78174and Tk. 10647, respectively. The results indicate that potato farmers received the higher gross return and net return compared to mustard producers. Functional analysis revealed that the variation of yield was greatly influenced by the human labour, fertilizers, pesticide and irrigation. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for the variation of yields. The study also revealed that the farmers faced various types of problems, such as lack of irrigation facilities, shortage of human labour, high price of fertilizers and insecticides, non-availability of quality seeds, low market price of product at harvest period, lack of storage facilities and inadequate transportation facilities. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations were made for the development of potato and mustard production and to increase the income of the farmers.Item A Biomechanical Study of Potential Plants for Erosion Control and Slope Stabilization of Highland in Thailand(Sustainability, MDPI, 2024-07-25) Mairaing, Warakorn; Jotisankasa, Apiniti; Leksungnoen, Nisa; Hossain, Monir; Ngernsaengsaruay, Chatchai; Rangsiwanichpong, Prem; Pilumwong, Jarunee; Pramusandi, Sony; Ahmmed, Abu Noman FaruqSoil bioengineering provides a sustainable method for erosion control and soil slope stabilization using vegetation with multiple co-benefits. This study evaluated ten plant species in Thailand’s highland regions for their soil bioengineering potential and additional benefits. Root architecture, tensile strength, and Young’s modulus were measured to compare biomechanical traits. G. sepium, F. griffithii, P. americana, B. asiatica, and C. arabica exhibited H-type roots with wide lateral spread, while M. denticulata and C. officinarum had VH-type roots with deep taproots and wide lateral extent. A. sutepensis showed M-type roots with most root matrix in the top 0.3 m, where C. cajan and C. sinensis had R-type roots with deep, oblique growth. Most species showed a negative power relationship between the root strength and Young’s modulus with the root diameter except C. cajan that showed a positive correlation. P. americana, F. griffithii, C. officinarum, and C. arabica showed relatively high values of 1 mm root tensile strength (exceeding 24 to 42 MPa), while M. denticulata, G. sepium, and B. asiatica exhibited intermediate root tensile strength (ranging from 8 to 19 MPa). A. sutepensis, C. cajan, and C. sinensis demonstrated the lowest root tensile strength, up to 7 MPa. It is advised to plan slope vegetation by selecting diverse plant species with varying root structures and benefits, addressing both engineering and socioeconomic needs of the sustainable nature-based solution.Item A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON PERFORMANCE OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE IN BORO SEASON(2011) Haque, M. M.; Pramanik, H. R.; Blswas, J. K.With a view to compare the performance of hybrid and inbred rice, a field experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during Bora season, 2008- 2009. Two rice varieties (hybrid Heera2 and inbred BRRI dhan45) and six planting dates (30 December, 15 January, 30 January, 15 February, 0 I March and 16 March) were selected. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design (RCBD) with four replications, placing variety at mainplot and planting date at sub-plot. Heera2 produced tillers rapidly at vegetative phase but the tillers retention capacity was lower at post-flowering stage compared to BRRI dhan45, regardless of planting dates. Tillers production reduced gradually with delayed planting in both varieties. Heera2 exhibited significantly higher plant height and higher !lag leaf photosynthetic rate at flowering over BRRI dhan45. Different planting dates did not exert considerable effect on flag leaf photosynthetic rate at !lowering. Heera2 was out yielded BRRI dhan45 in early planting (30 December and 15 January). At delayed planting, grain filling (%) declined rapidly in Heera2 in comparison to BRRldhan45. Grain yield decreased @ 36.55 kg ha·1day·1and 68.74 kg ha·1day·1 in Heera2 and BRRI dhan45, respectively after 30 December planting. This result suggests that hybrid Heera2 is suitable only for early Bora season.Item A COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF GARLIC AND BORO RICE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NATORE DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2014) HOSSAIN, MD. SAZZADThis study was undertaken to assess the comparative profitability of garlic and boro rice production. A total of 60 farmers (30 for garlic growers and 30 for boro rice growers) were selected randomly from three villages namely: Jogendranagar, Durgapur and Khubjipur under Gurudaspur Upazila in Natore district. Tabular technique and statistical analysis were done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of individual inputs on garlic and boro rice production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of garlic and boro rice was profitable from the view point of farmers. The total return per hectare for garlic and boro rice were Tk. 469056.23 and Tk. 195712.24 respectively. The gross cost of garlic was Tk. 278085.08 and for boro rice was Tk. 145960.9. Again the net return of garlic and boro rice were Tk. 190971.15 and Tk. 49751.34, respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.69 and 1.34 for garlic and boro rice production, respectively. The results indicated that garlic production was more profitable than the boro rice production. It was also evident from the study that per hectare net returns were influenced by most of the factors included in model namely: human labor, seed, fertilizer and manure, insecticides and pesticides, power tiller, and irrigation. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for influencing per hectare net returns for garlic and boro rice production. The study also showed that farmers producing garlic and boro rice faced some problems, mainly related to production and marketing of the crops. It may be concluded that the farmers should be encouraged to grow more garlic rather than boro rice as a means of increasing farm income through diversification of crop production in the area under study.Item A COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS ON PROFITABILITY OF BORO RICE AND JUTE PRODUCTION IN RAJOIR UPAZILA OF MADARIPUR DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRIBUSINESS AND MARKETING, 2018-06) ISLAM, TAHMINAThe present study was conveyed to compare the profitability of boro rice and jute in Rajoir upazila of Madaripur district. In this study, a total of 80 farmers were used as sample and data were collected by using a structured questionnaire during March-April 2019. In this study, CobbDouglas production function was used for analyzing data. From this study, it was estimated that the average per hectare cost for boro rice and jute production was Tk. 95482.41 and Tk. 89909.82 respectively. Additionally, per hectare total gross return of boro rice and jute was found to be Tk. 105420 and Tk. 136701.5 respectively. The net return per hectare from jute (Tk. 46791.68) was found higher than boro rice (9937.62) production. Moreover, gross margin of jute (Tk. 56052.5) was found to be higher than boro rice (Tk. 19289.7). Furthermore, the benefit cost ratio of jute (1.52) was found higher than boro rice (1.10). The result revealed that jute was more profitable than boro rice in the study area. The result also revealed that power tiller, seed and fertilizer showed positive and significant effect on gross return whereas human labor and irrigation had negative but significant effect on gross return of boro rice. Additionally, jute seed nd fertilizer showed positive and significant effect whereas human labor and power tiller showed negative but significant effect on gross return of jute production. The present study identified some problems faced by the farmers. The major problems faced by the farmers of boro rice and jute were high input cost, shortage of labor and high wage rate, low price of output, lack of storage facilities and lack of capital. Eventually, giving subsidy on input price, initiatives to ttract labor more on agricultural sector, ensuring fare price, building more storehouse and giving agricultural loan at low interest rate were suggested to uplift the profitability and management practices of boro rice and jute production.Item A COMPARATIVE PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS BETWEEN AROMATIC AND AMAN RICE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF DINAJPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) MOSTOFA, SYEDA ROWSHAN ARAThis study was undertaken to determine the comparative profitability of Aman and Aromatic rice production. The objectives of the present study were to examine sociodemographic profile of Aman and Aromatic rice growers, to assess the profitability of producing Aman and Aromatic rice, to identify factors affecting the yield of Aman and Aromatic rice and to identify the problems faced by the farmers. A total of 60 farmers (30 for Aman rice growers and 30 for Aromatic rice growers) were selected randomly from two upazila namely Hakimpur and Ghoraghat in Dinajpur district. Both Tabular technique and statistical analysis was done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of different inputs on Aman and Aromatic rice production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of Aman and Aromatic rice was profitable from the view point of farmers. The gross returns per hectare for Aman and Aromatic rice were Tk. 109578.13 and Tk. 141222.04, respectively. The total cost of Aman production was Tk. 81697.99 and for Aromatic rice was Tk. 80796.12. Again the net returns of Aman and Aromatic rice were Tk. 27880.14 and Tk. 60425.92, respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.34 and 1.74 for Aman and Aromatic rice production, respectively. The results indicated that Aromatic rice production was more profitable than Aman rice production. Production function analysis suggested that among the variables included in model namely: human labor, MoP, TSP and manure had a positive and significant effect on yield of Aman rice and human labor, gypsum, insecticides and pesticide had a positive and significant effect on the yield of Aromatic rice except for, urea had a negative and significant effect on the yield of Aromatic rice. The study also showed that farmers producing Aman and Aromatic rice faced some problems. It may be concluded that the farmers should be encouraged to grow more Aromatic rice than Aman rice as a means of increasing farm income in the area under study.Item A COMPARATIVE PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT USERS OF HYV BORO RICE CULTIVATION IN PAKUNDIA UPAZILA OF KISHOREGANJ DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT & POVERTY STUDIES, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2020-06) SAHA, NANDITA RANIAgricultural credit program is considered as the significant change-maker in the rural and subsistence agriculture sector of Bangladesh. Attainment of the agricultural credit program typically relies on the disbursement process, effective utilization as well as the profitability of the ultimate users. Therefore, an investigation was conducted at Pakundia Upazila under Kishoreganj district to assess the amount of requirement and disbursement situation of credit; evaluate the cost of getting credit and its utilization patterns; measure the profitability of credit borrowers and non-credit farmers; and find out the constraints of getting credit by different farm categories to get a detailed insight about successful attainment of the credit program on High Yield Variety (HYV) Boro rice cultivation. A total of 60 farmers were interviewed in 2019. Descriptive statistics as well as tabular analysis were used to analyze and interpret the data. The study revealed that borrower farmers used more inputs and attained more returns through higher yield than their counterparts. The yields of rice per hectare were 10697.04 kg and 8985.64 kg for the credit and non-credit user farmers, respectively. The gross returns and net returns were Tk. 230280.83 and Tk. 98290 respectively, for the credit user farmers and Tk. 194385.90 and Tk. 69809.29 respectively for non-credit user farmers. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCRs) were 2.68 and 1.74 according to variable cost basis and total cost basis respectively in case of credit user farmers and 2.47 and 1.56 for the non-credit user. The findings also revealed that on an average Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) fulfilled 77 percent of the total credit requirement of Boro rice farmers in the study areas. Borrowers had to pay on an average Tk 12.18 percent for getting loans where small farmers had to pay the highest followed by medium and large farmers, respectively. Small, medium and large farmers used 48, 35 and 23 percent of borrowed money, respectively, for Boro rice production and the rest were used for family consumption and other purposes. Medium farmers were found to be more profitable followed by large and small borrower farmers, respectively. Insufficient amount of credit, higher non-interest cost of institutional credit as well as long and complex institutional procedure of loan disbursement was reported as main constraints by the borrowers. The study further reveals that credit could be judged as a vital player to increase higher yield through utilization of necessary production inputs and the inevitability of reformation of the current agricultural credit program to make it more user-friendly and an effective contrivance.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS BETWEEN ETHNIC (GARO) COMMUNITY AND MAINSTREAM PEOPLE OF BANGLADESH.(DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENT AND POVERTY STUDIES, 2020) ANANDA, KRISHNA KRIPAThe study aimed to know the socio-economic status of Garo community in comparison to mainstream people. Nalitabari upazila under Sherpur district of Bangladesh has been selected as a case study area situated in the east border area of Bangladesh where the indigenous Garo people are living. For eras, the Garo’s have been the “Adivasies” of Bangladesh who maintained Sanatani religion. Today almost all the Garo people practice Christianity. Forty-two ethnic households & forty three respondents from mainstream people were selected randomly for data collection. Primary data were collected from a set of structured questionnaires containing 23 questions to know their socio-cultural status. Specially, the discussion was made with old age witty people of the ethnic as well as secondary data were obtained through reading various tribal magazines and history. From the observation, this study observed that socio-economic condition of the tribal is getting better day by day. Though there are some problems having in the area like poor communication, unemployment, lac of electricity, social security and land conflict with mainstream people. But primary health and income status are found improved enough as well as socio-cultural bonding with in ethnic is very strong. From the study I found the following observations regarding Garo community & mainstream people. (a) Possession of land among Garo community is much lower than the mainstream people. Reasons might be these as Garo community is not well aware about the legal procedures. Moreover, mainstream people have been engulfing them gradually with the help of administrative and political influences. (b) The Garo community people are higher in migratory works so that monthly income of them is also higher in some cases. (c) Also the Garo community lags far behind than the mainstream people in case of level of education and socio-political involvement accompanied by a difficulties during receiving govt. aids because of ignorance as they are Garo. (d) Most of the time the Garo people are forced to work with a lower wage because of the unfair socio-economic environment. (e) Garo people have much positive feeling about mainstream people.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF DIFFERENT AMAN RICE VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA-1207, 2016-06) SALAHIN, S. A. M.The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during Aman season (July -November) 2016 to study the growth, yield and yield attributes of different Aman rice varieties. The experiment comprised of eight Aman rice varieties viz., BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan54, BRRI dhan56, BRRI dhan57 and BRRI dhan62. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Different growth characteristics, yield and yield attributes varied considerably among the studied varieties. At 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 DAT (days after transplanting) and at harvest, the tallest plant (26.00, 54.10, 77.96, 92.88, 116.00 and 122.68 cm, respectively) were recorded from BRRI dhan32, whereas the shortest plant (21.97, 42.84, 65.32, 75.42, 101.00 and 101.88 cm, respectively) from BRRI dhan62. At 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 DAT, the highest leaf area index (0.41, 1.75, 3.89, 5.94 and 6.94, respectively) and the highest total dry matter hill-1 (3.24, 7.02, 8.68, 14.92 and 15.37 g, respectively) were recorded from BRRI dhan54, whereas the lowest leaf area index (0.35, 1.48, 2.99, 4.18 and 4.80, respectively) and the lowest total dry matter hill-1 (2.86, 4.51, 7.47, 11.82 and 13.73 g, respectively) from BRRI dhan34. The maximum days to maturity (134.25) were recorded from BRRI dhan34, while the minimum days (100.50) from BRRI dhan33. The maximum number effective tiller hill-1 (16.75) were recorded from BRRI dhan54, whereas the minimum number (12.05) from BRRI dhan34. The longest panicle (25.76 cm) was recorded from BRRI dhan54, while the shortest panicle (21.30 cm) from BRRI dhan34. The maximum number of filled grains panicle-1 (89.90) were recorded from BRRI dhan54, whereas the minimum number (75.80) from BRRI dhan34. The highest weight of 1000-grains (25.71 g) was obtained from BRRI dhan54, while the lowest (19.45 g) from BRRI dhan57. The highest grain yield (5.45 t ha-1) were achieved from BRRI dhan54, whereas the lowest (3.49 t ha-1) from BRRI dhan34. The highest straw yield (7.97 t ha-1) were recorded from BRRI dhan54, whereas the lowest straw yield (6.58 t ha-1) from BRRI dhan34. Among the tested Aman rice varieties, BRRI dhan54 was the best in consideration of yield attributes and yield.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOME ELITE HYBRID RICE VARIETIES IN DRY SEASON(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2013-01) Hossain, M. A.The experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the dry season (November, 2012 to June, 2013) to evaluate leaf area development, dry matter accumulation pattern and yield of some popular hybrid rice varieties. The experiment comprised of three hybrid varieties (Hira 2, Aloron and Tia) and an inbred variety BRRI dhan 29 with four dates of transplanting (01 January, 16 January, 31 January and 15 February). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Leaf area development, total dry matter production, absolute growth rate, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by the date of transplanting. Leaf area, total dry matter, absolute growth rate were found higher in early transplanted plots. The highest grain yield (6.07 t ha') was recorded from plots transplanted on 16 January due to increased panicles hi\l"' and grains paniclel.Hira 2 exhibited best result on leaf area (LA), absolute growth rate and total dry matter (TDM) production compared to all other studied varieties and thus recorded with highest grain yield (6.40 t ha"). No difference on grain yield was achieved from Hira2 at oI to 16 January transplantingItem A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON HYBRID AND INBRED RICE GROWN IN AMAN SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY DHAKA-1207, 2015-06) HOSEN, MD. DILUARA field experiment was conducted with four hybrids (Gold, Moyna, Shuborna 3 and BRRI hybriddhan 4) and three inbred rice varieties (BRRIdhan 56, BRRI dhan 57 and BRRIdhan 62) in the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, with a view to evaluating their performances. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Significant variation was found among the selected inbred and hybrid rice varieties in respect of their different growth and yield characters. Among the seven rice varieties, inbred BRRIdhan 62 was found inferior considering above characters. All the hybrid varieties contained higher amount of chlorophyll in their flag leaf at flowering to maturity compared to the inbred. BRRI hybriddhan 4 exhibited superiority over the rest hybrid and inbred varieties in different growth parameters like plant height, tillers hill-1, leaves hill-1, total dry matter hill-1, leaf area hill-1, leaf area index, crop growth rate and panicle length. BRRI hybriddhan 4 also showed superiority in case of yield parameters such as panicles hill-1(14.27), filled grains panicle-1(168.43), 1000- grain weight (26.07 g), biological yield (13.33 t ha-1) and grain yield (6.13 t ha-1). Rest of the hybrid varieties viz. Shuborna 3 (5.60 t ha-1), Gold (5.15 t ha-1) and Moyna (4.86 t ha-1) also provided higher grain yield compared to BRRIdhan 56 (4.63 t ha-1) and BRRIdhan 57 (4.25 tha-1). Panicles hill-1, filled grains panicle-1 and 1000- grain weight mainly contributed to the higher grain yield of the hybrid varieties over the inbred.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND YIELD OF SOME MODERN RICE VARIETIES IN AMAN SEASON(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2017) AKTER, FARJANAThe experiment was conducted in the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to observe the morphophysiological characteristics and yield of six Amanricevarieties named BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan56, BRRI dhan57, BRRI dhan62, Hira-2 and BRRI hybrid dhan4. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The hybrid rice variety, BRRI hybrid dhan4 showed superiority in respect of growth parameters like plant height, number of tillers hill -1 , number of leaves hill -1 , leaf area hill -1 , LAI,TDM hill -1 over the other varieties. Again, BRRI hybrid dhan4 also showed the highest yield contributing characters like effective tillers hill -1 (15.04), panicle length (15.24 cm), filled grain panicle -1 (141.17), 1000-grain weight (25.16 g) grain yield (6.21 t ha ) followed by Hira-2 (6.03 t ha -1 ), straw yield (7.18 t ha -1 ), biological yield (13.39 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (46.39 %) over the other inbred varieties. The lowest grain yield produced by BRRI dhan33 (3.82 t ha -1 ). In case of grain yield BRRI dhan56 (4.36 t ha -1 ) and BRRI dhan62 (4.29 t ha -1 ) showed statistically similar result. The yield was higher in BRRI hybrid dhan4 including another hybrid Hira-2 might be due to the production of higher number of effective tiller hill , leaf number, TDM, LAI, panicle hill -1 , filled grain panicle -1 and 1000-grain weight.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON PLANT SPECIES AND ECONOMICS OF NURSERY BUSINESS IN DHAKA CITY-A CASE STUDY(DEPT. OF AGROFORESTRY & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, 2016) BARI, MD. EHTASHAMThe study was conducted in four areas of DCC (Agargaon area; Dhaka University, High court and Doyel Chattar area; Gulshan and Baridhara area; and Airport road and Uttara area;) from January 2017 to March 2017. A total of 225 nurseries were identified in the studied area of which 40 nurseries were selected, which representing four areas of DCC. This study aimed to assess the socio-economic characteristics, plants species composition, nursery economics and main problems faced by the nursery owners in nursery business. On an average, a total of 325 species were identified in the nurseries of studied area of DCC. Among them 308 was found in the Agargaon study area, 300 in the Dhaka University, High court and DoyelChattar study area, 278 in the Gulshan and Baridhara study area and 294 in the Airport road and Uttara study area. The highest profit % in ornamental plant 411.13 in the Agargaon study area, 417.28 in the Dhaka University, High court and Doyel Chattar study area, 413.02 in the Gulshan and Baridhara study area and 407.50in the Airport road and Uttara study area of Dhaka City Corporation. Benefit cost ratio was calculated as 3.026 in the Agargaon study area, 3.329 in the Dhaka University, High court and Doyel Chattar study area, 3.480 in the Gulshan and Baridhara study area and 3.208 in the Airport road and Uttara study area of Dhaka City Corporation. Thus, the present finding revealed that nursery business is a profitable enterprise in the studied area and among them Gulshan and Baridhara area was more profitable.Item A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON TRADITIONAL AND MODERN AROMATIC RICE VARIETIES IN AMAN SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2017-12) ISLAM, MD. RAZAULA field experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, from July to December, 2018 (Aman season) with six traditional (Chinigura, Dulabhog, Chiniatop, Begun Bichi, Badshabhog and Kalizira) and four modern rice varieties (BRRIdhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38 and BRRIdhan50) with a view to assessing their performances. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Significant variation was found among the selected traditional and modern rice varieties in respect of their different growth and yield contributing characters. Among the ten rice varieties, traditional Begun Bichi was found inferior in case of grain yield. All the modern aromatic varieties contained higher amount of chlorophyll in their flag leaf at flowering to maturity compared to the traditional one. BRRI dhan50 exhibited superiority over the rest modern and traditional aromatic varieties in different growth parameters like leaf area index, tillers and leaves hill -1 at reproductive stages. BRRI dhan50 also showed superiority in case of yield parameters such as effective tillers hill panicle length (25 cm), filled grains panicle -1 (108), 1000-grain weight (23.57 g), biological yield (10.26 tha -1 ) and grain yield (5.99 tha -1 ). Rest of the modern varieties viz. BRRI dhan38 (3.85 tha 1 1 -1 -1 ), BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan34 (3.62 tha ) also provided higher grain yield compared to traditional Badshabhog (2.13 tha ), Dulabhog (1.75 tha -1 ), Chinigura (1.69 tha -1 ), Kalizira (1.56 tha ), Chiniatop (1.49 tha -1 ), and Begun Bichi (1.11 tha -1 ). Effective tillers hill , filled grains panicle -1 and 1000-grain weight mainly contributed to the higher grain yield of the modern aromatic rice varieties over the traditional varieties. -1 -1 (23.53), - -Item A COMPARISON BETWEEN CONTRACT AND NON CONTRACT POTATO FARMERS(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEM, 2015) KAR, DEBASHISHThe objective of the study was to identify differences in demographic and operational characteristics between contract and non contract potato farmers. Thirteen selected characteristics of both the contract and non contract farmers were studied. The focus was also to identify the influencing factors responsible for production related decisions and preferences of informational sources by the contract and non contract potato farmers. Data were collected during February, 2016 from 60 contract and 60 non contract farmers under Sadar upazila of Sherpur district. The descriptive statistics showed that there were huge differences between contract and non contract farmers in terms of their responses among various categories. On the other hand, independent sample t-test showed that there were significant differences between the contract and non contract farmers in respect of land under potato cultivation, income from potato cultivation, communication media exposure, training exposure, knowledge on potato cultivation and satisfaction towards potato cultivation. It also showed that, the influencing factors responsible for production related decisions varied between the contract and non contract farmers at various degrees of influences. Credit facilities influenced the contract farmers to the highest extent but it had no influence on potato cultivation by the non contract farmers. Whereas marketing facilities and success stories jointly hold the first rank as influencing factor to the non contract potato farmers. Besides those, among 10 specific informational sources, Deputy Assistant Director, BADC was preferred mostly by the contract potato farmers, whereas input dealers ranked 1 XV st position in case of the non contract farmers.Item A COMPERATIVE STUDY ON NITROEENOUS AND BIOFERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIElD OF MUNGBEAN(Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University., 2011-06) HOSSAIN, MD. ELIASHThe experiment was conducted at the Research Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). Dhaka during the period from April 2011 to July 2011 to study the performance of two mungbean varieties without Bradyrhizobiuzn and with nitrogen/Bradyrhizobiurn. There were six treatment combinations and four replications were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) technique. The Bradyrhizobiurn strain BARI RVr-403 was used for the above experiment. The selected varieties were BARI Mung-5 and BARI Mung-6. The above varieties were tested with or without nitrogenlBradvrhizohiwn inoculation. BARI Mung-5 performed better than BARI Mung-6 variety in respect of different parameters like nodule number and weight, root weight and shoot weight, root length and shoot length, pod length and pods plant'. But BARI Mung-6 produced higher 1000-seed weight, stover yield, seed yield, plant height and seeds pod' than BARI Mung-5. Bradyrhizohiurn inoculation significantly increased nodule number and weight. seed yield, stover yield, plant height. 1000-seed weight, pods plant* seeds pod'. N content in seed and stover, N uptake by stover and seed. Interaction ellects revealed that BARI Mung-5 with Bracs5.'rhizohium inoculation recorded the highest nodulation but inoculated BARI Mung-6 recorded the highest seed yield compared to other treatment combinations. Non-inoculated BARI Mung-5 gave the lowest yield. The highest N uptake by seed and stover was found in BARI Mung-6 x Inoculum treated plot. Economic analysis revealed that the highest BCR (1.31) was noted in inoculated BARI Mung-5.Item A CROSS SECTIONAL INVESTIGATION ON THE OCCURRENCE OF TREMATODE METACERCARIAE IN FRESH WATER CRAB, Sartoriana spinigera IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) AL - WASEFFreshwater crabs are distributed throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world that are consumed for the purposes of medical and tonic properties, including the treatment of stomach ailments and physical injuries. Sartoriana spinigera is an important edible freshwater crab species which play an important role as intermediate host of Microphallus indicus. It serves as biological vector for transmission of their infective stages to the final host namely herring gulls, shorebirds, ducks and rodents. We targeted to investigate the prevalence of lung fluke in Bangladesh because Paragonimus westermani, the lung fluke has been reported from Northeast India including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal. During survey, the metacercariae of food borne trematodes were investigated from a total of 261 crabs collected from different geographies of Bangladesh. We could not recover any metacercaria of Paragonimus spp. from the examined crab. The metacercariae of M. indicus were recovered from the crabs screened in this study. The overall prevalence of M. indicus metacercariae was 26% with intensity of 1-63 per crab. The highest (83.33%) prevalence was recorded from Naogaon district, northern part of Bangladesh followed by Sirajgonj (57.5%), Rajshahi (40%), Brahmanbaria (16%), Narsingdi (15%), Faridpur (10%), and Sunamgonj (7%). None of the crabs collected from Rangpur, Thakurgoan, Jashore, Meherpur, Magura, Barguna, Sylhet, Kishorgonj, Cox’sBazar and Bandarban was found to be infected with any microphallid metacearia. Whereas, the highest number of infected crabs were found the in rivers (56%), followed by haor, canal and ditches (5%) and ponds (0%). To the best our knowledge, M. indicus is going to be reported for the first time from Bangladesh. Therefore, proper attention should be paid during consumption of crabs.Item A PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS WITH COMPARISON ON BORO RICE AND JUTE PRODUCTION IN SHIBCHAR UPAZILLA OF MADARIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2020-06) NASRIN, KHALEDAThe profitability of boro rice and jute production was explained in this research. The Shibchar upazila of Madaripur was selected as study area. Total 60 farmers, 30 boro rice farmers and 30 jute farmers were randomly selected for the present study. The data were collected during March-April 2020, by using a structured questionnaire. Cobb-Douglas production function was used for analyzing data. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of boro rice and jute was profitable from the view point of farmers. The estimated average cost of boro rice production was Tk 216103.48 per hectare and jute production was Tk 142991.39 per hectare. The gross return of boro rice and jute per hectare were Tk 235698.17 and Tk 161608.83 respectively. The estimated gross margin of boro rice was Tk 52457.85 per hectare, jute was Tk 50287.26 per hectare, net return of boro rice and jute productions per hectare were Tk 19594.69 and Tk 18617.44 respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of boro rice production was 1.09 and jute production 1.13. In the study, it was observed that jute production was more profitable than boro rice production of the study area. It was also evident from the study that per hectare net return was significantly influenced by human labor (0.2872***), power tiller (0.1490**), fertilizer cost (0.5253***) for boro rice. In the case of jute production, per hectare net return was significantly influenced by human labor (0.3441***), power tiller (-0.0755**), fertilizer (0.3791**), manure cost (0.0482**). The research identified and ranked some of the issues that boro rice and jute growers faced. High input costs, a labor scarcity and a high pay rate, a lack of storage facilities, a lack of capital, insect attacks, and natural disasters were all the major issues. To fulfill the objectives of this report data were collected from secondary sources. Collected information have then processed & compiled with the aid of MS Word, Excel & other related computer software. Major findings of this report are Janata Bank has a significant role in long term project financing in both agriculture and industrial sectors. Again Janata Bank has a deep concern for rural farmers. Most of the loans that Janata Bank distributes are as cash credit hypothecation and Janata Bank emphasizes l ess on demand loan. Janata Bank distribute loans without sufficient security in some cases. This is violation of the Bangladesh bank order. In many cases bank face this problem because bank’s credit officer fails to value collateral property. Proper valuation means collateral will exactly cover the risk of bad loan. Officials must do it with due care. The recovery performance of Janata Bank is not in a satisfactory level at all and the position of those in that respect deteriorated heavily during last two phases. The recovery performance in agriculture is worse than in other sectors. On the other hand, as private sector banks distribute more loans on short term basis and relatively better than public sector. But if we compare it from the efficiency point, then it is clear that they are not still efficient in credit management as they are unable to recover half of their distributed loan in different sectors. JanataBank does not keep enough provisions against classified loans and advances.Private sector banks are relatively efficient in processing and executing legal actions against defaulters for their nonpayment of loans and advances in due time that of public sector bank.The overall credit activity of Janata Bank Limited is composed of corporate credit division and credit administration.They always trying to improve their credit policy for minimizing loss and maximizing profit and various measures are undertaken to develop the credit management system.
