JuwelThe principal objective of this study is to understand the implications of Labor Welfare Center (LWC) for workers. This research congregates and proficiently deals with legislated functions such as playground for indoor & outdoor games, night schooling, skill development and awareness training/workshops, newspaper reading, library etc. as well as the health services including prescription, medicines, first aid, elementary disease treatment even anti-biotic services of both Tejgaon and Tongi Labor Welfare Centers (LWCs) for different types of workers like factory, mills, industry and garments workers. The mainstays of this thesis are to examine the welfare services including health care services of these Labor Welfare Centers (LWCs) for workers. Drawing predominantly on Keynes theory of national welfare state and Marshall’s doctrine of social rights, this study enunciates the integration of legislated welfare services or provisions and implementation of these provisions through state or statutory agent like LWC. Findings of this study delineate that the implications of Labor Welfare Center is not at satisfactory level or so poor. The prolonged absence of doctor, medicines, recreational facilities, and effective trainings, proper health treatment even legislated welfare services divulge the vulnerability of LWC. Due to the lack of proper health treatments and other facilities, the frequency of going to outside of LWC such as govt. hospitals, LMF, quack, pharmacy sometimes private clinic for treatment is quite high which also denotes the poor implications of LWCs. Though workers are not able to bear the expanses of their health treatment but they are bound. They are also not satisfied with the existing health treatments of LWC for their specific disease and illness like cold & cough, urine infection, skin diseases, anemia, stomach pain or vomiting etc. This study also focuses the attitudes of workers towards its welfare services including health services while most of them showed negative attitude towards LWC’s welfare services for workers. It has also emphasized on some critical issues for LWC’s poor implications as well as recommendations for further improvement. Thus, this research pivotally focuses on the implications of LWC for workers through examining the functioning as well as health services of both Tejgaon and Tongi Labor Welfare Centers.Item A study on the effect of social safety net programme on livelihood pattern and income generation in Comilla(University of Dhaka, 2015-03-31) Akter, TanzinaThe constitution of Bangladesh has recognized that the people having insecurity have the rights to get necessary assistance from the state. The idea social occasion draws analogy from analysis of many sociologists which implies that disasters provide multi-possibilities for human action for development rather than involving one liner path to an end result which implies an event. Sometimes these disasters best be seen as social crisis occasion (Quarantelli: 1986) .Human experiences of coping with disasters are best exemplified in the way the poor people cope with vulnerability. Though vulnerability is not the same as poverty but the poor people are more prone to vulnerability due to external shocks like disaster. Here we can say that climate is the primary important factor for agriculture based country as well as her famer’s socio –economic condition. But climate variability effect itself also varies within the same country. As a result, coastal area people are more vulnerable than the people live in highland. In Bangladesh poverty is the overriding issue which depicts the relationship between disasters and socio-economic factors. Its highlights social phenomenon and individual– collective behaviour in mitigating effects of disasters on poor. This study reviews the impacts of climate variability on agriculture sector. As a sociological study, the main interests are findings the socio-economic vulnerability of farmers along with the potential agricultural adaptation due to climate variability in Bangladesh.Item Computer professional’s health hazard: a study in Dhaka city(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-05) Parveen, SunjidaThe Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is an emerging industrial sector in Bangladesh. According to Ministry of Finance 2013, the size of the IT industry is estimates to be approximately around US$ 120 million per year (including export). But computer professionals are among the most unnoticed working groups in Bangladesh who are exposed to various occupational health hazards due to their work postures and long working hour on computer. This study aims to assess the prevalence and pattern of computer related health hazards among the computer professionals in Dhaka city. It also seeks to examine the attitudes of the professionals towards health hazards, the association between the computer professionals’ health hazard and their working environment and interventions by government, employers and employees. With the Dhaka Metropolitan Area as a study site, a descriptive cross-sectional survey of 105 computer professionals (79% males and 21% females) between ages 20 through 45 and made up of Software programmers, Designers, Business analysts, Developers and Network engineers was conducted. The participants in the present study were recruited from 12 different software companies in Dhaka city. Results indicated that musculoskeletal disorders were common among the computer professionals. The highest (56.2%) respondents suffered from upper back trouble and (43.8%) suffered from lower back trouble. However, (41.9%) of the respondents suffered from wrists trouble and (41.0%) suffered neck pain. Shoulder trouble was found among (24.8%) of the respondents and (25.7%) of the respondents suffered eye restrain. Due to these troubles and discomforts, (20.0%) respondents were prevented from work and (40%) of the respondents consulted with the doctors or physio-therapists. Smoking habit was found among the (58.1%) of the respondents and a relation between long work hour and smoking habit was also analyzed. Accessing the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, large number of respondents (38.0%) was found moderately depressed. Statistical significant association was found between the long work hour and the level of depression. These findings underscore that the computer professionals are prone to these occupational hazards so computer service sector should be emphasized as a field of concern in occupational health hazards. Application of ergonomics and better technology along with proper lighting; cushioned chair and soft keypads in the office settings are required. There is also a need for enforcing suitable preventive measures to combat these occupational health hazards along with establishing OSH policy and legislations.Item Crime and Delinquency among Slum Children of Dhaka City: A Sociological Study(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-11) Islam, AtikulBangladesh has experienced one of the highest urban population growth rates (around 7% per year) over the past three decades. Dhaka, the capital city, attracts approximately 320,000 migrants from rural areas every year. The city is unable to provide shelter, food, education, healthcare, and employment for its rapidly-expanding population. An estimated 3.4 million people live in the overcrowded slums of Dhaka, and many more live in public spaces lacking the most basic shelter. Overall condition of the slum of Dhaka city is the worst with minimum access to basic human rights. The society has to grapple with numerous social problems. Crime and delinquency among slum children is the societal problems experienced in the contemporary scenario. This refers to the phenomenon of slum children being active in criminal activities. This is a unique challenge since the individuals are below the stipulated age of adulthood. My study found various types of crimes and delinquencies among children of Rayer Bazar slum such as violence, theft, robbery, mugging, trafficking, drug addicting, drug dealing, sexual harassment etc. and they are also used by outsiders drug dealing, mugging, robbery etc. They involve to these crimes and delinquencies for various reasons such as social condition, poor parenting, delinquent peer, economic insecurity, lack of education, labeling delinquent self image etc.Item Economic restructure and redevelopment: A case of Khulna city(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-30) Naznin, SaimaThe present world is a post-modern world. With the development of the market economy the world run away with a new culture. In this world economy everyone wants to lead a better life. All over the world this culture is going on, another important thing is that in Third World countries this new economic culture is also evident very well. Bangladesh is also a member of a new economic world. Due to liberalization economic restructure and redevelopment occurred in our country. In Khulna city the effects of liberalization is also evident. It makes incredible transformation of lifestyle .Quality of urban life in Khulna city has become a commodity where consumerism, privatization, cultural and social changes effects on everywhere. Especially in Bangladesh, students had taken a crucial role in the history of struggle. It is more important than the other students all over the world. Any movement of changes comes from the students historically in Bangladesh. In this country students are the conscience of nation. Universities have long been seen as institutions for preparing students as a man for life, both academically and as moral agents in society. In order to become capable, moral citizen, Students need to be provided with opportunities to learn moral values. But now-a-days moral degradation is increasing day by day in Dhaka University as well as all over the country. Education system has a close relationship with moral values. ‘Everyman is for himself’ it is the dialogue of present time. Reality or intelligence is selfishness and moral values are emotion and foolish vocabulary, this type of wrong teaching is given in everywhere. In the Sovereign Republic of Bangladesh, many types of education system are existing here. For this reason present education system is failed to build same national civic sense or collective sense. Education System also failed to create moral values and it is liable to create moral degradation. Students are running to career based education. Thus education system makes the students as well as the nation mechanical, immoral, selfish and individualistic. So, this study tries to explore the situation of existing education system and sense moral values.Item Facebook as a Virtual Space in Formatting New Form of Social Movements: A Study on Shahbag Uprising(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-10) Arefin, Md. NazmulToday, in the age of internet, as a social networking site Facebook is expanding its power of connecting people. Facebook, after being launched in 2004 continues to be a budding phenomenon through which people are connected to each other in a way never experienced before. Keeping pace with the network society the urban youth of Bangladesh are using the power of social networking for several purposes but most importantly for disseminating political thinking. Recent Shahbag Uprising carries out the proof of it. Under these circumstances I felt a genuine urge to plan my master’s dissertation on such a contemporary topic like Facebook in formatting new form of social movement. The major argument of this paper is that Facebook as a social medium has not only changed the very notion of social networking, but also it provides a ‘Space’ for political and social organization and activism as well. This paper will look closely at the extent to how Facebook was used by the activists of Shahbag Movement for organizing the protest, and diffusing awareness of political mobilization among public. This paper will use recognized theories of social movements and communication in order to analyze the role of Facebook as a virtual space in mobilizing crowds towards change and pro-democratic movements. The paper focuses on the various Facebook pages which played crucial roles in garnering the sentiments and opinions of the people about war criminals of Bangladesh, and initiating the protest against the verdict, and in formatting new form of social movements. This paper will make a significant contribution to the social movement discourse of Bangladesh as it has made a pioneering effort in analyzing the role of Facebook in formatting new form of social movements guided by new form of activism.Item Gender Dimension of Arsenicosis: A Sociological Study in Selected Villages of Nilphamari District(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-27) Sultana, TouficaThis study focuses on gender dimension of arsenicosis at selected village in Nilphamari district from a sociological point of view. It is one of the highest contributory sectors of our economy. However, it is a matter of great regret that the workers of the RMG industry are deprived of their minimum necessities and rights rather they are facing gender violence and vulnerabilities both at the workplace and home. This study focuses on the violence and vulnerabilities faced by the garment workers. This study through a survey and some case studies shows that the RMG workers are surviving with poor socio-economic condition. They are living in such an environment where approximately 4.8 people live in a room. Almost 9 to 13 people use a toilet on an average. There are cases where they do not have access to a stove and cook food using other people’s stoves in exchange of monthly payment. The study shows they are facing violence inside the family, on the way, and at the workplace. This violence includes sexual harassment, psychological and mental stress and physical violence. This study shows that while female workers are facing more psychological and sexual violence, the males face more physical and psychological violence. Verbal abuse and abusive behavior from the superiors at the workplace are gendered and very commonly found. Violence of the workers’ human rights is frequent in this sector. The study reports some factories still lock the workers from morning till night which increase the possibilities of greater loss of lives in case of accidents. These workers are also vulnerable due to the informal nature of job, lack of facilities, fire accident, injuries and health problems like headache, back pain, eye problems. The survey reveals that they have long working hours, mandatory overtime, less payment for the overtime, fear of losing job, no facilities of labor unions, no festival allowance, lack of child care facilities and so on which indicates their vulnerabilities. Though they are vulnerable at work and living place, my study shows that most of the workers are satisfied with their working environment. Nonetheless, they are aware that rest of the society has a negative attitude towards them. In RMG industries there is a gendered division of labor and female workers are less likely to get managerial posts than the males. Female are in worst situation and also are facing more violence than the males. Female get less payment, lower post, have no time for their own, experience sexual harassment and verbal abuse at workplace and also on the way. At home they are the victims of Family violence. No male respondents of the study had to face sexual violence at work or family violence. In spite of such difficulties it has also been seen that women have higher aspiration to be permanent in their job or for better future than the males. It is the reason behind the quick emergence of RMG sector and feminization of labor force in this sector.Item Globalization and International labour Solidarity Movement: a Study on Readymade Garment Industries of Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-18) Akter, SharminBangladesh is a developing country. One of our important sectors of business is readymade garments industries. It is one of the largest export oriented sector which made a new way in our country for the economic sector. From the very beginning of this sector, our garment workers are deprived of their basic rights and living miserable life .They don’t get minimum wage .Women workers especially rural women do not get any healthy environment there. Both Male and female workers are at vulnerable situation. It is high time to come over from it. But for that A over all solidarity is needed among the. In the globalization process the problem of RMG labors of different countries are same. One’s problem Affect all other. So an international solidarity is seen for movement to improve RMG labors life. More over Solidarity canter of Bangladesh working on labor solidarity for various movements to improve their overall situation. That is why I am interested about this topic. So I decided to work on this issue to find out their problem I tried to find out their back ground history on movement. I tried to find out AFL-CIO’s role in Bangladesh. I conducted a qualitative research through in-depth Semi Structured Interviews and try to find out the answers from Experts. I also conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to know about the labors and their condition. Finally I have given the limitations of my research with Future suggestion.Item Globalization and the Changing Pattern of Parent-Child Relationship: A Case Study on Dhaka City(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-27) Fatema, Syadani RiyadThe aim of this study is to explore the changing pattern of parent child-relationship in terms of globalization that is encouraged by communications technology and western culture. Therefore, the present study aims to critically explore the recent changes in parent-child relationship due to the increasing dependence on the uses of mobile phone, Skype, facebook, tweeter etc. by the students studying in different educational institutions of Dhaka city. Research suggests that respondents who frequently use the communication technologies (mobile phone, internet etc.) and accustomed to western culture are more likely to feel less bonded with their parents. This study, solely, investigated the correlations between the usage of communications technology and the contemporary changing pattern of parent child relationships among the students of Bangladesh. It revealed that the respondents who spend huge time using the communications technology got influenced by western culture such as practices of premarital sex and live together cultures and thus they unintentionally draw a border line from their parents. Moreover, parents’ lack of quality time giving with their children was found to be one of the prime reasons of the recent gap between parent and children. The study uses quantitative method of data collection. Samples are selected using simple random sampling procedure for the survey. A number of 384 students of the University of Dhaka, Motijheel Ideal School and College and Maple Leaf International School are interviewed. The theoretical foundation of this study is Bengtson’s theory of ‘intergenerational solidarity’ where he showed that lack of exchanging information, emotional support, functional assistance and social integration affect parent-child relationship. Results of the logistic regression indicate the importance of items of globalization in determining the pattern of parent-child relationship such as addiction to communications technology (R2=0.22, p<0.001), accustomed to western culture (R2 = 0.17, p<0.08) and external relations (R2=0.15, p<0.001). Findings suggest a significant relationship between communications technology and the changing pattern of parent-child relations. Findings also show that most of the respondents being influenced by western culture that reach to them via dish antenna and Internet prefer to spend less time with their parents.Item Globalization, fashion and values: A sociological study on the students of Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-08) Konica, Kamrun NaharIn recent time, all the modern, developed and developing countries are more or less within the realm of globalization. Day by day globalization is becoming more or more popular, most of the countries of the world see their better fortune in this arrangement. Actually globalization covers a wide range of issues including economic, political, cultural etc. Technology has been the main driver of globalization. Advances in information technology have brought massive changes in all spheres of life. In the process of globalization, culture of developing countries is being influenced by the culture of developed countries. Under cultural globalization, the experience of everyday life is influenced by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, reflects a standardization of cultural expressions around the world. Being propelled by the efficiency of wireless communications, electronic commerce, popular culture, and international travel, globalization has been seen as a trend toward homogeneity that will eventually make human experience everywhere essentially the same. Globalization has great impact on culture. It also helps to break down prejudices and broaden outlook and then develops international brotherhood. The process of globalization is pouching the western unformatted culture into our society and disturbing the balance of our mentality and social psychology. Some people are leaping forward to keep up with the western culture while some others are defending their own cultures against the western ones. ‘Globalization’ influences sports too. Many national and international sporting events are organized from time to time. Many games organized like cricket, football, international computer programming competition are held in occasionally. We can see these games on BTV, BTV world channels easily. And due to the success of this process in cricket Bangladesh now is well known to almost all. The culture of Bangladesh is blend of various tenets of religion, tradition and regional tendencies. The process of globalization has put the countries of the world are like families in a village. The people of developing countries like Bangladesh are being influenced by the cultures of foreign countries specially the culture of India. As a result, our Bengali culture is changing and our native culture is on threat.Item Information based economy and social polarization: A study on urban marginal in Dhaka city(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-01) Hussain, RaselNeoliberal globalization has bequeathed the world cities with a concentration of information and communication technologies which actually employed a small segment of workforce who are literate and skilled enough. On the other hand it plays significant role in the increase of marginal group of people. This surplus urban population engaged in informal economy is a specific characteristic of dependent urbanization occurring in developing countries. Dependent urbanization incorporates over-urbanization and parasitic cities with low standard of living and high rate of unemployment. But the governments of third world countries like Bangladesh run by the interests of the IMF and World Bank cannot create formal employment for this large segment of urban populations. This research interest falls on information based economy which creates social polarization of the urban marginal groups of the city. The study has been conducted in the five poor neighborhoods of Dhaka city. To conducting this research literature has been reviewed from global, Asian and regional perspectives. Solid theoretical framework has been constructed after reviewing the work of prominent urban sociologists like Castells, Sassen, Friedman, Wolf, Fainstein, De Soto and Bayat. This study found that without finding job in the formal sector they engaged themselves in the informal economy with a lower level of income as a result they are leading their life in a marginal way. Even sometimes they cannot meet the basic needs. Most of them (57.5%) are living in the slum and poor neighborhood areas and they do not have full access to the urban services as well. It further reveals that 57.5% of the informal poor work long working hours and another 30.83% respondents receive lower income from their job. However, the study argues that due to the intervention of information based economy a lot of changes taken place in the economic sphere of the country and in job market. Now part time jobs and jobs for women are available. It further argues that with the lower level of income the new marginal group of people became vulnerable and led a life with the cycle of social and economic polarization generation after generation.
