Item Postmodernism and the production of new space in Dhaka city(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-09) Risat, Md. Ilias KamalThe worldwide shifts in cultural as well as in political-economic activities since 1972 has profoundly affected all the developed country's and former third world countries. Bangladesh, during 1971 achieved its independence as a country and followed economic path to socialist guidelines of state domiantion. The guidelines could be practiced through the spirit of people's enthusiasm but mischievous state mechanism couldn't practice it because of its confusion or pressures from the western capitalist country's development route to modernity through structural adjustment programmes. Long path has gone after the confusions and uncertainties. At the edge of 1990, the whole socialist block or soviet communism decayed finally and Bangladesh entered in the world of Global capitalism with full confidence and enthusiasm. As capitalism and it's development strategies was dependent on neoliberal ideologies and market mechanism of imbalanced economic strategies, Bangladesh has entered in the world of global capitalism with great confidence. This entrance has made possible for Bangladesh to the emergence of a 'Plundering class'. The uneven development of worldwide unequal capitalist systems touched Bangladesh and it's capital city Dhaka with huge manner. With the advent of shifting dimensions of time and space, made a relation between rise of postmodernist cultural forms, the emergence of more flexible modes of capital accumulation. Dhaka city became the centre of attraction as the hub of global culture and local culture. The market circulation of commodities found the Dhaka city a perfect place of bridges like any other global cities of emerging countries. The satellite world, the rise of global media, the launching of deshi TV channels, the aesthetics of advertisements and images, the colourful beauty of consumer world, the grandness of shopping malls as the perfect hub for world products and commodities, the global world of different taste of different cultures and subjectivities affected the young generations from the middle and upper class background. The global and local cultures has found it's effective trace among that sections of youth. Dhaka city became the produced spaces of consumption and became the network for other global city's and the other town districts of Bangladesh. The shifting culture and it's consequences is very urgent to understand the crises of young generations and the scenario of Bangladesh from the context of postmodern shifting of time-space sensibilities.Item Gender Perspectives of the Mass Media People in Bangladesh: A Sociological Study(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-09) Jowel, Md.The media of Bangladesh is spreading up day by day. AbdurAutism is now firmly established as a disorder of the developing mind and brain functions. Autism prima fascia a problem of enological maturation which becomes apparent in three years from birth and the very problem leads to inability of a child in normal and expected social interaction. Literature shows that it has a gender dimension that boys are more vulnerable to develop autism reveals in impediment of oral communication, observation and ‘abnormal’ behavior. Now autism is still full of mystery. Most people have accepted that autism is a lifelong condition and that it is inappropriate to expect a cure. People with autism often find social interaction difficult, have problems with verbal and non-verbal communication; demonstrate restrictive and repetitive behavior; have a limited set of interests and activities. ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females. Autism is a developmental disorder where language disorder is the most common characteristic in it, the sort of problems that children with ASD may have include as- not being able to express themselves well, not being able to understand gestures, facial expressions, or tone of voice, saying odd things, echolalia, pronoun reversal, sometimes using many words when one would do, using odd phrases and odd choices of words, making up their own words, not being able to understand difficult orders. Very few individuals who fail to achieve spoken language by this age later develop complex speech. For the majority of individuals with language impairments, the comprehension of language is generally at a higher level than their expressive abilities. Social relatedness includes marked impairment in non-verbal communication, peer relationships and social-emotional reciprocity. Restricted interests and activities includes encompassing preoccupations, adherence to non-functional routines or rituals, stereotypes and motor mannerisms. Communication/play includes either a delay or total lack of spoken language and lack of developmentally-appropriate make-believe or social play. A significantly greater number or PDD children displayed the problems: inaccessibility, strange behavior, and sleeping problems. The specific problems more or less in here in autism. Developmental deviance and retardation in the domains of cognition, language and socialization; rigid, stereotyped and inflexible style of functioning. The non-specific type of problems is additional to and not necessarily bound up with autism among these overactive behavior, temper tantrums, aggression, self-destructive behaviors, fears and phobias, sleeping problems and problems with toilettraining. In infancy non-specific symptoms are recognized, such as the lack of initiative, hyperactivity and sleeping and feeding problems. Children may develop normal speech until the age of two and then stop. Fifteen percent of children with autism develop seizures in the first few years of life and these spasms or seizures are thought, in some case, to cause autistic withdrawal. Some of autistic children are unable to make peer relation. They play only in themselves have very eccentric introvertness. They don’t understand the social norms. As they are unaware of basic social norms, they cannot maintain the interactional reciprocity in a given social context. For example to wear heavy weight dress during summer is odd for interaction but they are unaware of it. Children with autism would not or could not perform the tasks possibly due to severe mental retardation or the deficits in comprehension of language, impaired perception of rewards for cooperation, or severe impaired attention. Early onset of autism is widely accepted as before two and a half to three years of age. Learning difficulties are reported in 70% of children with autism (Taylor, 2006: 511). The majority of children with autism are mentally retarded and, therefore, a minority of children with autism functions in the normal to near-normal IQ range. Children with autism can have impaired hearing, but most do not. Some have impaired vision, but again, most do not. One of the earliest attempts to explain the cognitive problems of children with autism tend to touch, taste, and smell objects and people, often in a socially embarrassing way. Experimental evidence, however, soon showed that the excessive use of taste, touch and smell was not specifically associated with autism, but was associated with low mental age. This study asserts that the parents of autistic children undergo a high degree of stigmatization and public negligence in social interaction which makes them prone to stress regarding their children’s future.Item A Study on Labor Welfare Center and Its Implications for Labor Welfare in Selected Areas of Dhaka(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-09) Rana, Md. JuwelThe principal objective of this study is to understand the implications of Labor Welfare Center (LWC) for workers. This research congregates and proficiently deals with legislated functions such as playground for indoor & outdoor games, night schooling, skill development and awareness training/workshops, newspaper reading, library etc. as well as the health services including prescription, medicines, first aid, elementary disease treatment even anti-biotic services of both Tejgaon and Tongi Labor Welfare Centers (LWCs) for different types of workers like factory, mills, industry and garments workers. The mainstays of this thesis are to examine the welfare services including health care services of these Labor Welfare Centers (LWCs) for workers. Drawing predominantly on Keynes theory of national welfare state and Marshall’s doctrine of social rights, this study enunciates the integration of legislated welfare services or provisions and implementation of these provisions through state or statutory agent like LWC. Findings of this study delineate that the implications of Labor Welfare Center is not at satisfactory level or so poor. The prolonged absence of doctor, medicines, recreational facilities, and effective trainings, proper health treatment even legislated welfare services divulge the vulnerability of LWC. Due to the lack of proper health treatments and other facilities, the frequency of going to outside of LWC such as govt. hospitals, LMF, quack, pharmacy sometimes private clinic for treatment is quite high which also denotes the poor implications of LWCs. Though workers are not able to bear the expanses of their health treatment but they are bound. They are also not satisfied with the existing health treatments of LWC for their specific disease and illness like cold & cough, urine infection, skin diseases, anemia, stomach pain or vomiting etc. This study also focuses the attitudes of workers towards its welfare services including health services while most of them showed negative attitude towards LWC’s welfare services for workers. It has also emphasized on some critical issues for LWC’s poor implications as well as recommendations for further improvement. Thus, this research pivotally focuses on the implications of LWC for workers through examining the functioning as well as health services of both Tejgaon and Tongi Labor Welfare Centers.Item Facebook as a Virtual Space in Formatting New Form of Social Movements: A Study on Shahbag Uprising(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-10) Arefin, Md. NazmulToday, in the age of internet, as a social networking site Facebook is expanding its power of connecting people. Facebook, after being launched in 2004 continues to be a budding phenomenon through which people are connected to each other in a way never experienced before. Keeping pace with the network society the urban youth of Bangladesh are using the power of social networking for several purposes but most importantly for disseminating political thinking. Recent Shahbag Uprising carries out the proof of it. Under these circumstances I felt a genuine urge to plan my master’s dissertation on such a contemporary topic like Facebook in formatting new form of social movement. The major argument of this paper is that Facebook as a social medium has not only changed the very notion of social networking, but also it provides a ‘Space’ for political and social organization and activism as well. This paper will look closely at the extent to how Facebook was used by the activists of Shahbag Movement for organizing the protest, and diffusing awareness of political mobilization among public. This paper will use recognized theories of social movements and communication in order to analyze the role of Facebook as a virtual space in mobilizing crowds towards change and pro-democratic movements. The paper focuses on the various Facebook pages which played crucial roles in garnering the sentiments and opinions of the people about war criminals of Bangladesh, and initiating the protest against the verdict, and in formatting new form of social movements. This paper will make a significant contribution to the social movement discourse of Bangladesh as it has made a pioneering effort in analyzing the role of Facebook in formatting new form of social movements guided by new form of activism.Item Crime and Delinquency among Slum Children of Dhaka City: A Sociological Study(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-11) Islam, AtikulBangladesh has experienced one of the highest urban population growth rates (around 7% per year) over the past three decades. Dhaka, the capital city, attracts approximately 320,000 migrants from rural areas every year. The city is unable to provide shelter, food, education, healthcare, and employment for its rapidly-expanding population. An estimated 3.4 million people live in the overcrowded slums of Dhaka, and many more live in public spaces lacking the most basic shelter. Overall condition of the slum of Dhaka city is the worst with minimum access to basic human rights. The society has to grapple with numerous social problems. Crime and delinquency among slum children is the societal problems experienced in the contemporary scenario. This refers to the phenomenon of slum children being active in criminal activities. This is a unique challenge since the individuals are below the stipulated age of adulthood. My study found various types of crimes and delinquencies among children of Rayer Bazar slum such as violence, theft, robbery, mugging, trafficking, drug addicting, drug dealing, sexual harassment etc. and they are also used by outsiders drug dealing, mugging, robbery etc. They involve to these crimes and delinquencies for various reasons such as social condition, poor parenting, delinquent peer, economic insecurity, lack of education, labeling delinquent self image etc.Item Socio-cultural factors responsible for the causation of some diseases in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-11) Hossain, Md. FaruqDisease is basically a socio-cultural construction. The role of socio-cultural factors as the aetiology of diseases has long been overlooked by the pure medical knowledge. Society is changing rapidly. So the knowledge of the aetiology of diseases has been diversified. People are now more conscious about their health and disease conditions as they were in the past. Now various diseases are related to lifestyle. Those who maintain satisfying lifestyle can easily avoid some diseases of modern society. Now the life expectancy of people has increased compared to the antiquity. Rapid development of medical science and technology has made it possible. According to sociologists and anthropologists, social class, economic position, gender, life events and cultural beliefs can be correlated with the incidence and distribution of certain diseases. In the developing world like Bangladesh, there is a clear relationship between health and income. In our country, much of the population already weakened by poor nutrition will suffer from infectious and other communicable diseases. These diseases are often transmitted with the help of polluted water supplies, poor sanitation and inadequate housing, all of which can be improved by an adequate income. The cultural factors are often difficult to quantify and are therefore less attractive to medical epidemiologists and statisticians. Nevertheless, despite this difficulty in quantifying cultural factors, there is sufficient evidence available to confirm their role in the development of diseases –even if this role is contributory, rather than directly causative. It should also be noted that in some cases, cultural factors may protect against ill-health. This study mainly focuses on the socio-cultural factors on the causation of some diseases in Bangladesh. It finds that there is a correlation between socio-cultural factors like lack of consciousness, diet, exercise, housing, environment, cultural practices, food intake, social relation, economic conditions etc. and causation of some diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, tuberculosis, malaria, arsenicosis, STDs/STIs and HIV/AIDS. Kamrangir char area has been selected for the study. By interviewing and discussing with the people of kamrngir char, the study finds that there is a correlation between socio-cultural factors and disease causation.Item The Political Economy of Industrial Accidents in Readymade Garments Factory in Bangladesh: A Case Study of Rana Plaza Tragedy(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-11) Islam, SaifulItem People’s Perception and Response to Tornado of 2013: A study at Sadar Upazila in Brahmanbaria District(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-11) Ahamed, Md. HafizThe geographical location and characteristics of Bangladesh make it one of the most disaster prone countries and rank it as the most climatically vulnerable country in the world. In every year, a number of storm strikes in different part of Bangladesh. Tornado is strongest one of them. Bangladesh hasrecently,on 22March 2013, experienced a tornadic event which also caused severely damages in the eastern part of Bangladesh more specifically in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh. This study is subjected to find out the local people’s perception and response regarding to that tornado. It is evident from the study findings that there was no warning provided for this tornado and this was also occurred for first time in this area. Therefore, the local people were not prepared and almost knew nothing about this disaster. Most of the respondent defined tornado being influenced by the religious and cultural values and only 22 percent of the respondents said that they took shelter in their neighbor’s building during tornado because there is no emergency shelter center and also disaster related information center in this area. But after the tornado local elite people, Government and Non-government organizations came forward to help them to adapt the situation and to minimize the damages.Item A Sociological Study on Women, Veil and Empowerment in Urban and Rural Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-16) Shayma, Tasnim AraThis study is conducted to examine whether there is any relationship between veil and women empowerment in the context of rural and urban Bangladesh. In this study the reasons for wearing veil, the reflection of empowerment indicators like participation in politics, decision making, participation in extra-curricular activities, property inheritance, educational attainment and control over personal income in the lives of veiled women, their perception on gendered division of labour, and their sense of aesthetics and expressionism have been investigated. Then this study explains whether the practice of wearing veil empowers or disempowers women in the context of Bangladesh. Several theoretical insights on gender socialization and gender relation have been adopted. In this study, qualitative method is employed to offer an elaborate description of the life experiences and the perception of the veiled women on women empowerment in the light of wearing veil. The responses of the female veiled students studying at different types of educational institutions like medical college, university and madrasa who come from both urban and rural areas are collected and the responses of some employed veiled women i.e., teacher, doctor and banker are collected by using case study method and then analyzed to uncover the problem of the veiling practice to the path of women empowerment in Bangladesh. The extent of occupational segregation in relation to their practice of wearing veil is substantial in the context of Bangladesh that more or less limits their chance of being empowered.Item NGO’s role in Cyclone Disaster management of Bangladesh: focusing cyclone Sidr in Patuakhali(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-16) Sukhi, Taznim JahanBangladesh is one of the most natural disaster prone countries. Over the last 40 years many cyclones have affected the country accompanied with loss of lives and property. Recently it’s visiting frequency increase so rapidly, which attract my concern to study on this sector. The low-lying coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, thus placing these population, infrastructure, agriculture, livestock and economic development in a high-risk situation. Cyclone disaster mitigation is a major concern in Bangladesh. The role of NGOs, especially with relief and rehabilitation programs, during and after disasters is to complement governmental efforts in Bangladesh. In principle, NGOs are responsible to assist the government in implementing national programs successfully. This study aims to assess the efforts of NGOs in cyclonic disaster management in Bangladesh. Coastal belts as cyclone disaster prone areas were included mostly for analysis. Study focused on response, recovery, rehabilitation, and affected community people. Cyclone SIDR (and the associated response) has been selected as the basis for this research and CARE Bangladesh and BRAC were included mainly for the study. Data were collected based on both primary and secondary sources. Both qualitative and quantitative research approach were applied for the study. Role of CARE Bangladesh and BRAC to SIDR disaster management especially with emergency response, recovery, and rehabilitation activities was significant. Presently, NGOs are giving emphasis on work with preventive measures as a strategy of disaster risk reduction.Item Globalization and International labour Solidarity Movement: a Study on Readymade Garment Industries of Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-18) Akter, SharminBangladesh is a developing country. One of our important sectors of business is readymade garments industries. It is one of the largest export oriented sector which made a new way in our country for the economic sector. From the very beginning of this sector, our garment workers are deprived of their basic rights and living miserable life .They don’t get minimum wage .Women workers especially rural women do not get any healthy environment there. Both Male and female workers are at vulnerable situation. It is high time to come over from it. But for that A over all solidarity is needed among the. In the globalization process the problem of RMG labors of different countries are same. One’s problem Affect all other. So an international solidarity is seen for movement to improve RMG labors life. More over Solidarity canter of Bangladesh working on labor solidarity for various movements to improve their overall situation. That is why I am interested about this topic. So I decided to work on this issue to find out their problem I tried to find out their back ground history on movement. I tried to find out AFL-CIO’s role in Bangladesh. I conducted a qualitative research through in-depth Semi Structured Interviews and try to find out the answers from Experts. I also conduct a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to know about the labors and their condition. Finally I have given the limitations of my research with Future suggestion.Item Absentee Husband and Their Wives: A Sociological Study on Problems of Migrants’ Wife in Chandpur, Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-24) Morshed, MarjanaMigration is a global phenomenon, deeply affecting the lives of the 200 million migrants around the globe but also the lives of those connected to them, in particular those left behind in the countries of origin especially the wives of migrants. Within neoliberal economy the involvement of private sector in every socio- economic and political aspect is increasing for the neoliberal nature of urban governance. The elite and expert controlled private sectors day by day are diminishing state control and changing the governing pattern. Thus neoliberal urban commons are undermined within neoliberal urban order. Hence it can be depicted in every sector the involvement of private organizations and poor participation of public sectors the study shows it from poverty reduction and post disaster risk management point of view. For poverty reduction and governance pattern the study depicts within neoliberal economy the socio- political and economic consequences of urban poor and poor living condition within the same system of urbanization. For them various NGOs are working for leading a better life as urban dwellers whereas, here the government support is totally empty. For post disaster risk management and urban governance it shows for a building collapse victims’ post disaster management various NGOs and INGOs are working and public organizations’ involvement is very poor for that. The study was conducted with primary data collection from the slums of Mirpur in Dhaka city. Thousand households were surveyed with a structured questionnaire constructed on habitat type, urban and social services, employment pattern, taking NGO service, political integration and leadership in slum community. There was also taken three in- depth interviews. Five private organizations are interviewed from the aspect of poverty reduction and post disaster risk management view. This study argues that within neoliberal economy and urbanization process urban governance is changing its pattern for neoliberalism.Item Climate Variability & Rural Livelihoods The Vulnerability & Adaptation Strategy of Coastal zone Farming Community(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-25) Wazed, SalinaThe concept of social phenomenon encompasses the meaning of ‘Occasion’ rather than ‘event’. The idea social occasion draws analogy from analysis of many sociologists which implies that disasters provide multi-possibilities for human action for development rather than involving one liner path to an end result which implies an event. Sometimes these disasters best be seen as social crisis occasion (Quarantelli: 1986) .Human experiences of coping with disasters are best exemplified in the way the poor people cope with vulnerability. Though vulnerability is not the same as poverty but the poor people are more prone to vulnerability due to external shocks like disaster. Here we can say that climate is the primary important factor for agriculture based country as well as her famer’s socio –economic condition. But climate variability effect itself also varies within the same country. As a result, coastal area people are more vulnerable than the people live in highland. In Bangladesh poverty is the overriding issue which depicts the relationship between disasters and socio-economic factors. Its highlights social phenomenon and individual– collective behaviour in mitigating effects of disasters on poor. This study reviews the impacts of climate variability on agriculture sector. As a sociological study, the main interests are findings the socio-economic vulnerability of farmers along with the potential agricultural adaptation due to climate variability in Bangladesh.Item Globalization and the Changing Pattern of Parent-Child Relationship: A Case Study on Dhaka City(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-27) Fatema, Syadani RiyadThe aim of this study is to explore the changing pattern of parent child-relationship in terms of globalization that is encouraged by communications technology and western culture. Therefore, the present study aims to critically explore the recent changes in parent-child relationship due to the increasing dependence on the uses of mobile phone, Skype, facebook, tweeter etc. by the students studying in different educational institutions of Dhaka city. Research suggests that respondents who frequently use the communication technologies (mobile phone, internet etc.) and accustomed to western culture are more likely to feel less bonded with their parents. This study, solely, investigated the correlations between the usage of communications technology and the contemporary changing pattern of parent child relationships among the students of Bangladesh. It revealed that the respondents who spend huge time using the communications technology got influenced by western culture such as practices of premarital sex and live together cultures and thus they unintentionally draw a border line from their parents. Moreover, parents’ lack of quality time giving with their children was found to be one of the prime reasons of the recent gap between parent and children. The study uses quantitative method of data collection. Samples are selected using simple random sampling procedure for the survey. A number of 384 students of the University of Dhaka, Motijheel Ideal School and College and Maple Leaf International School are interviewed. The theoretical foundation of this study is Bengtson’s theory of ‘intergenerational solidarity’ where he showed that lack of exchanging information, emotional support, functional assistance and social integration affect parent-child relationship. Results of the logistic regression indicate the importance of items of globalization in determining the pattern of parent-child relationship such as addiction to communications technology (R2=0.22, p<0.001), accustomed to western culture (R2 = 0.17, p<0.08) and external relations (R2=0.15, p<0.001). Findings suggest a significant relationship between communications technology and the changing pattern of parent-child relations. Findings also show that most of the respondents being influenced by western culture that reach to them via dish antenna and Internet prefer to spend less time with their parents.Item Stateless Diaspora: A Sociological Study on Biharis in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-27) Afroz, ShamimaToday, in Bangladesh, Urdu-speaking community known as Biharis lives in various camps in different parts of Bangladesh. The refugee flows are caused by a complex interaction of political, economic and social forces shaped by both indigenous condition and external pressures. Some refugees are tolerated or ignored; others are allowed to remain on humanitarian grounds. Some are stateless, denied the protection afforded by citizenship. Many are regarded by the host governments simply as illegal aliens. Bangladesh has a long story of hosting Rohingya from the Northern Rakhaine state of Myanmar. Presently, there are two Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh situated in Cox’s Bazar. Registered Rohingyas are living in these camps. In addition, there are many unregistered Rohingyas who are living outside the camp illegally. Bangladesh is a developing country with huge population. It is very difficult to host this Rohingya population for a country like Bangladesh. The exodus of Rohingyas to Bangladesh is caused by existing racial conflict in Myanmar that snatches away their citizenship status. For this reason, they are taking refugee status in Bangladesh .They do not have any fixed identity as well as nationality both in host country (Bangladesh) and their country of origin (Myanmar). As a result, Rohingyas and their children are not having basic rights to live their livelihood. In this context, this study is an initiative to explore the nationality crisis and the violation of children’s rights associated with this issue.Item Urban Informality, Poverty and Politics: A case of Dhaka City(University of Dhaka, 2014-03-30) Arafin, ShahidaUrbanization is one of the inevitable feature in the process of development, but rapid expansion of the urban process in Dhaka city has brought with it incredible transformation of lifestyle.
