Migration refers to shift from one country to another. This shifting makes the migrants learn the new language and cope with the new environment. Life in a new country is very difficult as the migrants have to face many barriers and problems in the new country. Without knowing the language of the host country, it becomes more difficult for the migrants to adapt to the host country’s culture. People from different countries are also migrated to Bangladesh. This paper looks at how learning the language of Bangladesh influences foreign students’ adaptation to the culture of Bangladesh. 30 foreign students were interviewed to collect data for this research. The researcher used a questionnaire with 14 open ended questions for the foreign students. A mixed method of data analysis comprising both qualitative and quantitative methods has been followed for analysis. The findings of this study show that learning Bangla language is one of the initial ways to adapt to the Bangladeshi culture. This paper will serve as a model for any foreign student in Bangladesh who is trying to adapt to Bangladeshi culture. The goal of the study is to explore that pedagogic practice of grammar acts as a hindrance to develop the skill of free writing. As free writing is not practiced in Bangla medium, the ability to think critically does not get scope to flourish properly. Survey questionnaires for teachers‟ and students‟ have been used as an instrument for this research. Along with, a writing test for analyzing errors is also given to exhibit students‟ performance in free writing. Four schools from Narayangonj Sadar are chosen for this study and the subjects are 255 in number. The value of the coefficient measured on the sum of errors is o.58. The value denotes a moderate positive relation between students‟ performance in free writing test and memorized test. It demonstrates that students make errors in both types of writing as the value is positive. The relationship is moderately strong because the value is less than 0.7. In addition, the sum of the errors shows that in spontaneous writing students make errors two times more than in memorized writing. Thereby, the findings and analysis reveal that students perform comparatively poor in free writing as they are habituated in learning grammar in a discrete fashion. Finally, the study suggests some necessary measures that should be taken into account to prohibit the traditional practice of discrete point grammar in Bangla medium schools. In brief, the study tends to raise awareness on the importance of practicing free writing in order to develop the ability to think critically.Item Challenges of teaching productive language skills: A case study of an English medium school in Bangladesh(BRAC University, 12/31/2019) Islam, Marjan; Al Amin, MdEnhancing speaking and writing abilities in English now a days has become a mandatory part for a student. Among those behaviors, speech delay is most commonly observed. Due to language disorders, the atypical children carry different patterns of language, use different ways of interaction, which makes them “atypical” or in some case “disable” in the society (Kinnear, Link, Ballan & Fischbach, 2015). Association with stigma in raising atypical child creates difficulty in both parents and in children themselves. All the stigmas, negativities, shyness, ignorance make the life of the parents’ life difficult that are mostly associated with the atypical behaviors (O'Brien, 2007). This study found out that all the parents expect and fight for the equal treatment and positive behaviors so that their atypical children can lead a life like typical children of this society. This shows that they are not satisfied with the existing norms or behaviors of the society towards atypical children. To establish these statements, the researcher conducted a survey on the parents to identify their problems in raising atypical children. Moreover, to get a different dimension, the researcher also interviewed the teachers of an institute for atypical children and observed classes to monitor the behaviors and language usage of atypical children. This study therefore, aims to create an awareness among the society by addressing the sufferings of the parents of atypical children.Item Online language teacher education for ongoing development : prospect in Bangladesh among the English teachers(BRAC University, 12/6/2015) Fabee, Nazida Akter; Sultana, Dr. AsifaThis thesis investigates the prospect of Online Language Teacher Education (OLTE) among the secondary level‘s English teachers in Bangladesh for their ongoing development. They get a little opportunity to communicate or interact with teachers and each other. As a result, they do not get the chance to explore literature in a meaningful authentic manner. The aim of the paper was to identify the effectiveness of CLT in literature class at secondary schools level context in Bangladesh so that students got the chance to practice literature in communicative manner, which would help them to explore literature that would be considered as a shift from traditional method to communicative approach. To establish the statement, the researcher conducted a survey on both the teachers and the students and also tested the students where the researcher used two sets of questionnaires and one test question. As the target group, the researcher chose standard 9 (class), where the researcher applied CLT along with GTM to identify the effectiveness of applying CLT in literature class.
