Seven(7) inbred lines of white maizewere mated using complete 7×7 diallel fashion during rabi season 2017-18 and then evaluated their combining ability and heterosis of forty-two hybrids over two checkvarieties BARI hybrid maize-12 and BARI hybrid maize-13 at research farm of Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during rabi season 2018-19. The variancesfor general combining ability (GCA) were found significant for all the characters except ear diameter, while specific combining ability (SCA) was significant for all the characters except ear height and plant height suggesting that non-additive gene action was importantfor inheritance of yield and yield related characters in the hybrid progeny. GCA varianceswere much higher in magnitude than SCA for all the characters except number of row per ear and ear diameter indicating the superiority of additive gene effects for the inheritanceof these traits. The analysis of GCA revealed that parents P7 and P4 were the best general combiner for yield related character, while parents P7 and P3 for earliness and dwarf plant ype. The analysis of SCA showed that crosses P7×P1, P1×P3, P7×P4, P6×P3, P3×P5, P4×P6, P6×P7, P5×P7, P3×P7 and P4×P5 exhibited maximum positive SCA effects for yield related character viz. ear length, ear diameter, number of row per ear, number kernel per row and hundred kernel weight and kernel yield per plant. The heterosis showed that percent heterosis for grain yield varied from -9.412% to 40.421% and -16.304 to 38.361%, considering BARI hybrid maize-12 and BARI maize hybrid-13 as check varieties respectively. Twenty crosses exhibited significant and positive heterosis over the check varieties. The highest positive heterosis showed by cross P5×P7 (40.421% and 38.361%), P3×P7 (39.50% and 37.45%), P1×P3 (37.99% and 35.97%), P5×P4 (37.81% and 35.79%), P4×P7 (36.26% and 34.26%), P6×P7 (33.10 and 31.15%), P6×P4 (32.28 and 30.34%),P1×P7 (32.19% and 30.25%) ,P4×P6 (26.39% and 24.54%) and P4×P5 (21.86 and 20.07%)over the checks BARI hybrid maize 12 and BARI hybrid maize 13, respectively. Considering the performance of SCA effects and heterosis, the crosses P5×P7, P3×P7,Item GENETIC EVALUATION OF BORO RICE (Oryza sativa L.) UNDER IRRIGATED AND RAINFED CONDITION(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, 2018) JOMADDER, MD. NAYEEMDrought is a major abiotic constraint for growing rain-fed rice in Bangladesh. A set of twenty rice genotypes including local boro rice genotypes viz., Poshusail, Gorchihail, Birion, Soilerpuna, Pankaich, Gopal Deshi, Borail were evaluated under irrigated and rainfed condition at farm of the Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during December 2018 – May 2019. Ten morphological characters viz, plant height (cm), flag leaf length (cm), flag leaf width (cm), number of primary branches per panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, panicle length (cm), number of filled grain per panicle, number of unfilled grain per panicle, thousand seed weight (g) and yield (ton/ha) were recorded. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant variation among the genotypes for all the characters under study in both conditions (irrigated and rainfed). The effects of water deficit on various morphological traits associated with drought tolerance were also studied. Result revealed that significant yield decline was observed almost in all rice genotypes grown under rainfed condition compared to normal irrigated situation. Out of twenty rice genotypes, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan59, BRRI dhan55 showed superior performance in terms of grain yield and yield attributes under normal irrigated condition. Under rainfed condition, the genotypes namely BRRI dhan55, Gopal Deshi, Soilerpuna showed superior performance in terms of grain yield and yield attributes. Significant variation was also observed among the genotypes for plant height, flag leaf length (cm), flag leaf width (cm), number of primary branches per panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, panicle length (cm), number of filled grain per panicle, number of unfilled grain per panicle, thousand seed weight (g) and yield (ton/ha) and drought tolerance index under both normal (irrigated) and rainfed condition. The present study also indicated the agro-morphological traits had direct and indirect effect on yield performance of rice genotypes under rainfed condition at reproductive stage.Item HETEROSIS AND COMBINING ABILITY ANALYSIS IN Brassica rapa L.(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, 2018) FERDOUS, JUBAIDAField experiment on rapeseed (Brassica rapa L.) involving 7 x 7 full diallel cross including reciprocal were conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the winter season of 2018-2019. Heterosis and Combining ability were estimated for seed yield and other related characters such as plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, no. of primary branches per plant, no. of siliqua per plant, no. of seeds per siliqua, length of siliqua and hundred seed weight per plant. Out of forty-one crosses, the hybrid SAU proposed 4 ×BARI Sar-15 was found to be the best for number of primary branches per plant. While the cross BARI Sar-6 × Local Tori-7 produced maximum number of secondary branches per plant. The cross BARI Sar-6 × Local Tori-7 produced maximum number of siliqua per plant. maximum length of siliqua was found in SAU proposed 4 × BARI Sar-6 whereas BARI Sar-17×BARI Sar-14 produced the highest number of seeds per siliqua. The highest seed yield was also observed in the hybrid Local Tori-7×Yellow Special. Highly significant positive heterosis was found in the cross SAU proposed 4 × BARI Sar-17 over better parent and in SAU proposed 4 ×BARI Sar-15 over mid parent for plant height. The hybrid SAU proposed 4 ×Yellow Special was found to have the best heterotic effect for number of primary branches per plant. Highest significant positive heterosis for number of secondary branches per plant and for number of silique per plant over better parent as well as mid parent was found in BARI Sar-6 × Local Tori-7. Significant negative heterosis over mid parent and better parent was found in SAU proposed 4 and thus these can be used for producing variety with earliness. Highly significant and positive value for both mid parent and better parent was represented by Local Tori-7 × Yellow Special. The variance due to GCA and SCA were highly significant for all the characters studied. The parent BARI Sar-17 was an excellent general combiner for dwarfness. For number of secondary branches, Seed yield per plant and the number of siliqua highly significant and positive GCA effects were observed in Local Tori-7. BARI Sar-17 exhibited the highest significant and positive GCA effects for seed per silique and can be considered as a good general combiner. Yellow Special × SAU proposed 4 was the best specific combiner for dwarfness where as Local Tori-7 × BARI Sar-17 for primary branches per plant and Local Tori-7 × BARI Sar-15 siliqua per plant. Yellow Special × BARI Sar-14 was the best specific combiner for seed yield per plant and SAU proposed 4 ×Local Tori-7 for seeds per siliqua. The GCA and SCA ratio for all the characters except seed yield per plant were more than one indicating that these characters were predominantly under additive genetic control.Item HETEROSIS AND COMBINING ABILITY ANALYSIS IN INTRASPECIFIC HYBRIDS OF LOCAL AND EXOTIC TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Plant height 5Item CHARACTER ASSOCIATION AND GENETIC DIVERSITY ANALYSIS IN POTATO (Solanum tuberosum L.)(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2018-06) HASAN, MD. MAHADYThe experiment was conducted with twenty genotypes of potato at the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November2017 to March 2018 to estimate the genetic variability, correlation and diversity among the twenty (20) genotypes of potato. The experiment was conducted using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. All the twenty (20) genotypes varied significantly with each other for all the studied characters indicated the presence of considerable variations among the genotypes studied. The phenotypic co-efficient of variation ( PCV) values were higher than the respective genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) values for all the characters under study. No of Secondary branches per plant, leaf breadth, no. of tuber per plant, individual weight of tuber, tuber yield per plant and yield (ton/ha) showed high heritability along with high genetic advance as percentage of mean were normally more helpful in predicting the genetic gain under selection. From the correlation analysis it was revealed that yield per ha was significantly positively correlated with secondary branches per plant, tuber per plant, individual tuber weight and tuber yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypic levels suggesting that the selection for these traits would helpful for the improvement of yield per ha. As per principal component analysis (PCA), D and clusters analysis the genotypes were grouped into five different clusters. Clusters V had the maximum nine and cluster II and IV had the minimum one genotype. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between II and IV and the lowest was observed between I and V. Genotypes in cluster II showed maximum performance for yield per ha, tuber yield per plant, individual tuber weight, tuber number per plant, tuber breadth, no of secondary branches per plant and plant height. Cluster III showed maximum performance for no of primary branches per plant and tuber length. Cluster V showed highest value for leaf length and leaf breadth. Considering this idea and other characteristic performances, genotype G19 (BARI Alu-46) from cluster II; genotype G18 (BARI Alu-41) and G2 (BARI Alu-49) from cluster I and G12 (BARI Alu-24) from cluster IV might be considered to suggest farmer for cultivation for better yield as well as use as parent for efficient hybridization programme for further improvement. 2Item GENOTYPE × STRESS INTERACTION UNDER SALINITY AND DROUGHT CONDITION IN TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicum L.)(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2018-06) SIDDIQUE, ABU BAKARThis study was conducted to investigate the genotype and stress interaction under salinity and drought condition. The experiments were conducted in net house of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University from November 2018 to March 2019. Two independent experiments were conducted with eight tomato genotypes collected from Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. The genotypes were SL 021 (G ), SL 022 (G 2 ), SL 023 (G 3 ), SL 024 (G XVII 4 ), SL 025 (G 5 ), SL 026 (G 6 ), SL 027 (G ) and BARI tomato 11 (G 8 ). Four salinity treatments viz. T 1 (control), T (4 dS/m, mild salinity), T 3 (8 dS/m, moderate salinity), T (12 dS/m, severe salinity) and four drought treatments viz. T 1 (control), T 2 4 (10 days withhold of water, mild drought), T (20 days withhold of water, moderate drought), T (30 days withhold of water, severe drought) were applied to the genotypes. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications was followed in both experiments. Genotypes, salinity and drought influenced singly and in interaction on agromorphogenic, physiological and nutritional traits of tomato. Salinity treatment affected almost all traits of tomato negatively except days to first fruit setting, days to maturity, dry matter content, Na+ uptake, Brix content, titrable acidity and vitamin C content. Drought treatment interacted negatively with all traits except days to first flowering, days to fruit setting, days to maturity, proline content, etc. Early flowering (22.67 DAT) and early maturity (65 DAT) was found in G 8 4 at moderate and severe salinity respectively. G showed higher number of cluster per plant, number of flower per cluster, number of fruit per cluster and number of fruit per plant in both mild to moderate salinity and drought treatment. G 8 showed higher average fruit weight and higher yield per plant in both mild to moderate salinity and drought treatments. G 5 showed lower Na + uptake and higher K + uptake in severe saline treatment and higher Membrane stability index at moderate drought treatments. G also showed higher increase of proline and vitamin C content with the increase of drought treatment. From the research findings, G 5 could be suggested for early flowering, early fruit setting, early maturity, higher dry matter content and highest lycopene content at mild to moderate saline prone area. G 8 could be suggested for higher number of clusters per plant, fruits per cluster and higher number of fruits per plant for moderate saline and drought prone area. G 4 8 could be suggested for higher fruit weight, higher yield per plant for mild to moderate drought and saline area. G could be considered for the cultivation at mild to moderate saline condition for its lower Na + uptake, higher K + uptake and higher vitamin C content. These genotypes viz. G 4 , G 5 and G could also be utilized as parental material for future hybridization program for these specific traits at specific stress prone area of Bangladesh.Item COMPARISION OF YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTINGCHARACTERS OF 13 ADVANCED POPULATIONS OF BRASSICA RAPA L.(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2018-06) NATH, ANWESHA SHREOSHIA research was conducted in the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural university, by using ten F 6 , one F 15 & two F 16 populations during November 2017-February 2018. The purpose of the experiment was to study variation in yield, numbers of seed per plant of the F 6 , F 15 and F 16 select the plant with higher yield and short duration. Mean performance, range and CV (%) of seed yield and yield contributing characters confirmed that there were considerable variation existed among the genotypes used in the experiment. The values of phenotypic variances were higher compared than the genotypic variances. Days to 50% flowering, 80% days of maturity, number of branches, number of secondary branches, number of siliqua per plant, number of seeds per plant, thousand seed weight and yield per plant showed least differences between genotypic and phenotypic variation. Moreover, the thirteen advanced populations of Brassica rapa showed significant variation in mean which provided opportunity to select promising populations for further higher yield trial. Two short duration and desired high yield populations were selected. They were SAU 2 x BARI 6 (F 6 , S 4 ) and BARI 9 x BARI 6 (F 16 , S 5 , early). For future trial BARI 9 x BARI 6 (F 16 , S 5 , early) can be selected as a parent. materials toItem COMPARISON AMONG EIGHT ADVANCED POPULATIONS FOR YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING TRAITS OF Brassica rapa L.(DEPARTMENT OF GENETICS AND PLANT BREEDING, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2018-06) ULLAH, AHMADThe research was based on the evaluation of eight advanced populations of Brassica rapa L. received from the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, considering 10 yields and yield contributing traits, using randomized complete block design
