Item Academic Achievements of the college students as related to their personality variables and Intelligence(University of Rajshahi, 2004) Mondal, Prokash Chandra; Faruk, TaskinaThe present study was an empirical investigation to find out relationships among Academic achievement personality variables and intelligence of the college students in Bangladesh. The main objectives of the study were to find out whether (a) students of high achiever group, Middle achiever and low achiever group differ in their intelligence (b) high achiever Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their 15 personality variables (c) High achiever students Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their family relationship (d) High achiever students Middle achiever and low achiever students differ in their socio-economic statuses. Nine hypotheses were formulated in the present study: i There would be a significant difference in intelligence of high, middle and low academic achievers. ii. There would be a significant and positive correlation between intelligence and the academic achievements of students. iii. There would be a significant difference in some personality variables (Achievement, Order, Autonomy, Interception, Succorance, Dominance, Abasement, Nurturance, Endurance and Aggression) of high, middle and low achievers. iv. There would be a significant correlation between some of the personality variables and academic achievement of the students. v. There would be a significant difference in some personality variables of the male and female students. vi. There would be a significant difference in family relation of the high, middle and low academic achievers. vii. There would be significant and positive correlation between family relationship and academic achievements of students. viii. There would be significant difference in belief system about consequences of high, middle and low academic achievers. ix. The three groups, high, middle and low achievers, would differ significantly in socio-economic status and parents' education. A total of 303 respondents from colleges were selected from 16 districts of four administering divisions (Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi Khulna) of Bangladesh. The instruments used to measure personality variables and intelligence were i} EPPS (Edwards Personal Preference schedule) ii) RSPM (Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices). The respondents' personal belief about consequences, measured by Rotter's External and internal locus control scale. The respondents' family relation measured by BAI (Bell adjustment Inventories) In this research study an adapted Bengali versions of EPPS, BAI, Rotter's I-E scale were used excepting RSPM. Information’s about Socio-economic status of the respondents were collected through questionnaires. The data were analyzed by different statistical techniques such as t’ lest, chi-square test and Co-efficient of correlation. 303 respondents were divided into three groups as High Middle and low achievers according to their obtained marks in S.S. C and H. S. C examinations and obtained score on intelligence test. The high achiever group consisted of 90 students (51 male and 39 female}. The middle achiever group consisted of 118 students (63 male and 55 female). The low achiever group consisted of 95 students (58 male and 37 female). The results revealed that high achievers Middle achiever and low achievers differed significantly in four measures. Students of high achiever group were more intelligent than that of middle and low achiever students. Socioeconomic status of high achievers were better than that of low achiever students. Significant difference was found in some personality variables between students of high achievers and low achiever groups. Family relation of high achiever group was much better than that of low achiever group.Item Impact of Personality Factors on Academic Achievements of College Students(University of Rajshahi, 2006) Chowdhury, Md. Rahamat Ali; Ara, ShawkatThe present study attempt at investigating the similarities and differences of achievement motivation of college students in relation to personality variables i.e. internal -external control and demographic factors i.e. gender differences like male and female and achievement level i.e. high achievement and low achievement within the framework of sociocultural and educational background of Bangladesh. The study has been developed in the line of (i) Achievement Motivational Approach, (ii) Philosophical and Physiological Roots of Motivation Theory, (iii) Psychoanalytic Approach of Motivation, (iv) Rotter's Social Learning Approach and Internal-External Control of Personality, (v) Cognitive Approach: Expectancy-Value Theory, and (vi) Socio-Demographic Approach. All these approaches have been utilized and integrated in order to show similarities or differences of achievement motivation of college students having high and low achievement motivation. Thus, the present study uses correlational approach with a criterion group design. The study conducted in two phases. In the first phase, criterion group of arts and science college students were selected on the basis of a criteria questionnaire. The criterion groups of arts and science students were divided into male and female equally. These male and female students were further sub-divided into high achiever and low achiever on the basis of their achievement level and responses to the criteria questionnaire. In the second phase, the criterion groups were given measures of (i) Achievement Motivation Scale, (ii) Internal-External Control of Personality Inventory and (iii) Demographic Variables. For measuring achievement level of motivation a modified form of Achievement Motivation Scale was used and for measuring personality Internal-External Control Inventory was used. Demographic variables include arts and science faculty, gender differences like male and female and level of achievement like high achiever and low achiever. The study utilized two samples drawn from arts and science faculties' of different educational institutions of Rajshahi and Chapai Nawabganj District. Each sample was composed of 120 respondents equally divided into male (N = 60) and female (N = 60). Again male and female were sub-divided into high achiever (N = 30) and low achiever (N = 30). Thus, the total sample was composed of 240 college students. All the respondents were Muslims. This choice was preerred in order to keep the religious variable controlled. The main objectives of the present study were to make an empirical investigation of academic achievement as reflected in their personality. Thus, the specific objectives of the present study were as follows: Firstly, to find out the differential achievement motivation scores between arts and science, male and female, high and low achiever students. Secondly, to find out the differential personality factors on internal external control scores between arts and science, male and female, high and low achiever students. Thirdly, to find out the similarities between arts male and science male, arts female and science female, arts high achiever and science high achiever, arts low achiever and science low achiever students on the variables of achievement motivation and personality factors of internal external control. Fourthly, to find out the similarities between arts male and arts female, science male and science female, arts high achiever and arts low achiever, science high achiever and science low achiever students on the variables of achievement motivation and personality factors of internal external control………………………………
