Item A COMPARATIVE FINANCIAL STUDY BETWEEN POTATO AND MUSTARD PRODUCTION IN SELECTED AREAS OF GAIBANDHA DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) RAHMAN, MD. MAHABUBURThe present study was designed with a view to analyze the comparative financial aspects of the selected crops such as potato & mustard production. A total of 120 potato & mustard producing farmers were randomly selected from six villages under Gobindogonj and Polashbari Upazila of Gaibandha district. Mainly tabular analysis was done to achieve the major objectives of the study. Cobb-Douglas production function model was also used to identify and measure the specific effects of the factors on production. The findings of the study revealed that the productions of selected crops were profitable. The per hectare total costs of production of potato and mustard were Tk. 136826 and Tk. 52976, respectively and the corresponding gross incomes were Tk. 215000 and Tk. 63623, respectively. The estimated net return of producing potato and mustard were Tk. 78174and Tk. 10647, respectively. The results indicate that potato farmers received the higher gross return and net return compared to mustard producers. Functional analysis revealed that the variation of yield was greatly influenced by the human labour, fertilizers, pesticide and irrigation. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for the variation of yields. The study also revealed that the farmers faced various types of problems, such as lack of irrigation facilities, shortage of human labour, high price of fertilizers and insecticides, non-availability of quality seeds, low market price of product at harvest period, lack of storage facilities and inadequate transportation facilities. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations were made for the development of potato and mustard production and to increase the income of the farmers.Item A COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF GARLIC AND BORO RICE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NATORE DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2014) HOSSAIN, MD. SAZZADThis study was undertaken to assess the comparative profitability of garlic and boro rice production. A total of 60 farmers (30 for garlic growers and 30 for boro rice growers) were selected randomly from three villages namely: Jogendranagar, Durgapur and Khubjipur under Gurudaspur Upazila in Natore district. Tabular technique and statistical analysis were done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of individual inputs on garlic and boro rice production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of garlic and boro rice was profitable from the view point of farmers. The total return per hectare for garlic and boro rice were Tk. 469056.23 and Tk. 195712.24 respectively. The gross cost of garlic was Tk. 278085.08 and for boro rice was Tk. 145960.9. Again the net return of garlic and boro rice were Tk. 190971.15 and Tk. 49751.34, respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.69 and 1.34 for garlic and boro rice production, respectively. The results indicated that garlic production was more profitable than the boro rice production. It was also evident from the study that per hectare net returns were influenced by most of the factors included in model namely: human labor, seed, fertilizer and manure, insecticides and pesticides, power tiller, and irrigation. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for influencing per hectare net returns for garlic and boro rice production. The study also showed that farmers producing garlic and boro rice faced some problems, mainly related to production and marketing of the crops. It may be concluded that the farmers should be encouraged to grow more garlic rather than boro rice as a means of increasing farm income through diversification of crop production in the area under study.Item A COMPARATIVE PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS BETWEEN AROMATIC AND AMAN RICE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF DINAJPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) MOSTOFA, SYEDA ROWSHAN ARAThis study was undertaken to determine the comparative profitability of Aman and Aromatic rice production. The objectives of the present study were to examine sociodemographic profile of Aman and Aromatic rice growers, to assess the profitability of producing Aman and Aromatic rice, to identify factors affecting the yield of Aman and Aromatic rice and to identify the problems faced by the farmers. A total of 60 farmers (30 for Aman rice growers and 30 for Aromatic rice growers) were selected randomly from two upazila namely Hakimpur and Ghoraghat in Dinajpur district. Both Tabular technique and statistical analysis was done to achieve the objectives of the study. The Cobb-Douglas production function was used in this study to determine the effects of different inputs on Aman and Aromatic rice production. The major findings of the study were that the cultivation of Aman and Aromatic rice was profitable from the view point of farmers. The gross returns per hectare for Aman and Aromatic rice were Tk. 109578.13 and Tk. 141222.04, respectively. The total cost of Aman production was Tk. 81697.99 and for Aromatic rice was Tk. 80796.12. Again the net returns of Aman and Aromatic rice were Tk. 27880.14 and Tk. 60425.92, respectively. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was 1.34 and 1.74 for Aman and Aromatic rice production, respectively. The results indicated that Aromatic rice production was more profitable than Aman rice production. Production function analysis suggested that among the variables included in model namely: human labor, MoP, TSP and manure had a positive and significant effect on yield of Aman rice and human labor, gypsum, insecticides and pesticide had a positive and significant effect on the yield of Aromatic rice except for, urea had a negative and significant effect on the yield of Aromatic rice. The study also showed that farmers producing Aman and Aromatic rice faced some problems. The undiscounted Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) were 1.26 and 1.41 for aman and boro rice production, respectively. The results indicated that boro rice production was more profitable than the aman rice production. It may be concluded that the farmers should be encouraged to grow more boro rice rather than aman rice as a means of increasing farm income through diversification of crop production in the area under study.Item A STUDY ON FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY AND FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THE YIELD OF OFF- SEASON VEGETABLE CULTIVATION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2021) EBTIDA, FAIROZE GOUHARBrahmanbaria and Kishoregonj districts have been selected purposively as study area. The study was confined to only summer tomato and cauliflower. Simple random sampling technique has been used for collecting cross sectional data and information from a total of 100 farmers (summer tomato-50 and off-season cauliflower-50). All the collected data were summarized and scrutinized carefully to eliminate all possible errors. Data were presented mostly in the tabular form. Descriptive statistics like average, percentage etc. were followed to analyze the data to achieve the objectives of the study. Functional analysis was also adopted in a small scale to arrive at expected findings. A Cobb-Douglas production function was used to estimate the factors affecting the yield of vegetables. Cost items were identified as land preparation, human labour, seed, urea, TSP, MoP, manure, irrigation, insecticide, interest on operating capital and land use cost. All these cost were accounted for one production period of selected vegetables. Per hectare gross return of summer tomato and cauliflower were calculated at Tk. 1099395.00 and Tk. 615360.00, respectively. Net returns of summer tomato and cauliflower were calculated at Tk. 994353.40 and Tk. 455278.13 per hectare, respectively. Benefit Cost Ratios (BCRs) were found to be 10.47 and 3.84 for summer tomato and cauliflower, respectively. The net returns of summer tomato and cauliflower were found to be positive and the BCRs were greater than one, which showed that the cultivation of summer tomato and cauliflower were profitable. Production function analysis suggested that land preparation cost, human labour cost, seed, urea and TSP had a positive and significant effect on the yield of summer tomato and cauliflower. MoP and irrigation cost had insignificant effect on the yield of both crops and irrigation cost had a positive and significant effect on the yield of cauliflower. Cost of insecticides had negative but significant effect on the yield of summer tomato, and had a positive and significant effect on the yield of cauliflower. The Adjusted R 2 s were found to be 0.772752, and 0.853164 for summer tomato and cauliflower, respectively. The F-values of the estimated production functions of summer tomato and cauliflower were found to be significant at one percent level which implies good fit of the models.Item A STUDY ON PROFITABILITY AND MARKETING OF CAULIFLOWER CULTIVATION IN NARSINGDI DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) SULTANA, TANHACauliflower is one of the popular winter vegetables in Bangladesh. Cauliflower is low in fat, but high in dietary fiber, folate, water, and vitamin C, possessing a high nutritional density, and beneficial to human health. This study was conducted to determine the profitability, marketing channel and marketing margin of Cauliflower in Narsingdi district of Bangladesh in 2019. A total of 105 respondents were interviewed through structured survey questionnaire. The result reveals that an average 65 man-days/acre was used for Cauliflower cultivation where on an average 31 man-days/acre was family supplied labour. The total cost of cauliflower production was Tk. 75807/acre. The quantity of main product on an average was 9500 kg and per unit price was Tk. 15.50/kg. Gross return was Tk 152250/acre and the benefit cost ratio was 2.04. Econometric analysis indicates that variables like seed, TSP, pesticides and farmers' experience had positive and statistically significant influence on Cauliflower production. The marketing costs of Faria (local traders), Bepari, Aratdar, Wholesaler and Retailer of cauliflower were Tk.68.72, Tk.161.37, Tk.135.09, Tk.155.66, and Tk. 154.39 per quintal respectively. It was revealed that marketing margin of the Faria, Bepari, Aratdar, Wholesaler and Retailer was Tk.170, Tk.210, Tk.240, Tk. 260 and Tk. 410 per quintal, respectively. In the study area farmers suffered with some problems in marketing their products such as poor communication and transport facilities, dominance of intermediaries, lack of adequate storage facilities, and low price in harvesting season. Providing good quality seed, storage facilities and helping them in forming ‘farmers group' for collective marketing of their products will contribute to increase their economic return.Item A STUDY ON PROFITABILITY OF MIXED CROPPING IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF MADARIPUR DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2013) DHALI, ARPITAThe main purpose of the study was to measure the profitability of mixed cropping and explore the relationship between the input costing and the profitability of the mixed cropping and identify the problems faced by the farmers. The input costs of the mixed cropping used in this study were land, labor, seed and fertilizers. The study was conducted in four randomly selected unions from Kalkini upazila under Madaripur district. Data on cost and returns of pulse and oilseeds were obtained from 80 randomly selected mixed cropping farmers of those unions namely Nabagram, Kazibakai, Dasar and Gopalpur. Pearson’s correlation co-efficient was used to explore the relationship between the concerned variables. Findings showed that the profitability of mixed cropping was Tk 9150.37 at Tk 120740.90 of total costs. The correlation co-efficient showed that land, labor, seed and fertilizers were positively correlated with profitability of mixed cropping. The study showed the problems faced by the farmers in practicing mixed cropping and also recommended some policies to overcome the problems.Item A STUDY ON PROFITABILITY, RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY AND MARKETING OF STRAWBERRY CULTIVATION IN RAJSHAHI DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) KHATUN, RUMANAThe present study was aimed to determine the profitability, resource use efficiency and marketing of strawberry cultivation in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh. The survey data were collected from 60 strawberry farmers using structure questionnaire in 2019. The study reveals that strawberry production is profitable to the farmers: the gross return was Tk. 1075000 per acre whereas total cost was Tk. 500521.40 per acre. The Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) estimated at 2.14. Econometric analysis shows that cost of human labour, seed, manure, TSP and insecticide had significant positive contribution to gross return of strawberry cultivation. In regards of resource use efficiency, manure and TSP were under used whereas seed and human labor was over utilized in strawberry cultivation. The study explored five important marketing channels for strawberry. This study also identified some of the problems and constraints associated with strawberry cultivation such as storage problem, lack of quality seed, capital and training, and also low price of product during harvesting period. Developing new varieties of strawberry, access to credit and extension services and training on production and marketing issue are important to enhance the economic return of strawberry farmers.Item ADOPTION DETERMINANTS OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON TOMATO CULTIVATION IN NARSINGDI DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2022) ISLAM, SANJIDAIntegrated Pest Management (IPM) practices are one of the most important technologies which are available in Bangladesh agriculture now-a-days. The present study was undertaken mainly to identify the determinants affecting the adoption of IPM practices by the tomato producers. For achieving the objectives, the study was conducted on 120 tomato farmers of Palash upazila (60) and Shibpur upazila (60) of Narsingdi district, of which 60 were considered as IPM users and 60 as IPM non-users. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used to achieve the objectives of the study. Majority of the tomato producers who produced tomato through IPM practices constituted middle aged farmers with middle family size and low farming experience and having small farm size, where most of the tomato producers who did not use IPM had medium farming experience with marginal farm holding and most of them were old aged with medium family size. The determinants that significantly affects adoption decision of IPM were age, education, societal membership, use of hired labor, livestock, training on IPM and distance to local market. Among these variables, training on IPM was the most influencing factor. Therefore, age and distance to local market have negative significance on adoption. Lack of credit, expensive inputs, unavailability of organic fertilizer, inexperienced trainers were some of the constraints faced by the tomato producers for both non-IPM and IPM practices. Government should give more emphasis on training and raising awareness on IPM to influence in using IPM.Item ADOPTION DETERMINANTS OF ORGANIC FERTILIZER USE ON BORO RICE PRODUCTION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF PABNA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2022) BISWAS, CHHANDANow a days organic farming is an important and most demandable method in agriculture. Rice plays a pivotal role in all sphere of life and when it comes to food security of the rural farmers. It is the most important commodity in terms of livelihood and food. It is not only staple food but also center of the entire Bengali life. Among various types of rice, Boro rice is grown all over the Bangladesh for export as well as domestic market. The present study was designed to analyze the socio-economic profile of the respondent, find out the determinants of organic fertilizer use on Boro rice production and identify the problems of organic fertilizer use on Boro rice production. Three villages were selected under Sujanagar Upazila and others two villages from Bera Upazila. Farmers are mainly using cowdung and compost as the organic fertilizer in the Boro rice production. Primary data were collected through purposively random sampling from 120 farmers. About 60 farmers use organic fertilizer in Boro rice production, whereas others 60 farmers who did not use organic fertilizer. Descriptive Statistics, Binary Logistic Regression model used in the study. Majority of the farmers who used organic fertilizer was medium aged farmers with medium family size, and they had completed their secondary level of schooling with medium income. In the contrary, who did not use organic fertilizer, had medium family size with medium income, and they had no formal education. Most of the organic fertilizer user did not use of credit facility, whereas inorganic fertilizer user use credit facility, although organic fertilizer user more engaged on various organizational membership than inorganic fertilizer user. Organic fertilizer user having livestock, but most of the inorganic fertilizer user have no livestock. The Logistic Regression Model reveals that education, training, extension service, information access, livestock, market distance, bicycle/van ownership were significant and positive, on the other hand age, family size, credit facility were significant and negative. Among various problems of using organic fertilizer on Boro rice production, lack of credit facility ranked first, high price of inputs ranked second, and lack of training ranked third position in the study area. This scenery will be changed with adequate use of credit facility, provision of organic fertilizer to the farmers. Government should give more emphasis on training and raising awareness on organic fertilizer use on Boro rice production.Item AGRICULTURAL VULNERABILITY AND ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE: A CASE OF RICE FARMERS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR, DHAKA, 2018-06) ISLAM, FAIJULThis study is motivated by the susceptibility of rice farming to climate change and partly by the limited studies on this topic in Bangladesh. The study has investigated the socioeconomic condition, adaptation strategies, barriers to adaptation as well as influencing determinants of adaptation strategies of costal rice farmers using survey data of 120 households through simple random sampling from two costal Upazillas namely Betagi under the district of Barguna and Golacipa under the district of Patuakhali of Bangladesh. Different statistical analysis including Multinomial Logistic (MNL) model are employed to fulfill the objectives of the study. The results reveal that salinity, cyclones & storms, and flood are the major vulnerabilities of the households. The farmers have perceived a gradual increase in temperature but abnormality in rainfall which has serious impact on rice production. Most of the farmers have experienced food scarcity during the months of Agrahayon, Poush, Ashwin and Kartik due to lack of employment opportunities in the area. Farmers have taken a range of adaptation strategies to reduce the adverse impact of climate change. The major adaptation strategies are direct-seeded rice, supplementary irrigation, cultivation of HYV, adjusting planting calendars and techniques, livestock, duck and poultry rearing, and cultivation of non-rice crops. However, lack of weather forecast information, lack of knowledge concerning appropriate adaptation and poor information on early warning systems are among the important barriers to adaptation. The results of MNL model indicate that farming experience, access to agricultural credit, access to electricity, access to information and extension services have significant influence on the choice of adaptation strategies. Government policy should target improving farmers’ access to credit, electricity and extension services, and provide HYV varieties suitable for the local condition to enhance the adaptation capacity of the vulnerable rice farmers.Item AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF BOTTLE GOURD PRODUCTION IN A SELECTED AREA OF NARAYANGANJ DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2013) PERVIN, LATIFAThis study was conducted to examine the profitability and resource use efficiency of Boro paddy producing farms under different land tenure systems. In total 90 farmers of which 30 owner, 30 cash tenant and 30 crops share tenant farmers were selected randomly from three villages namely Aruyakandi, Baroipara and Habibpur under Shailkupa Upazila in Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh. Primary data were collected from the farmers by farm survey method. The study revealed that the socio-economic condition of owner farmers had better than cash and crop share tenant farmers. It was found that HYV Boro paddy production was profitable for both land tenure farmers but there exists a difference in profitability among owner, cash tenant and crop share tenant farmers. Per hectare gross cost of owner, cash tenant, and crop share tenant farmers were respectively Tk 95858, Tk 91793.96 and Tk 78752.77 and per hectare gross returns were Tk 108933.00, Tk 119079.50 and Tk 117368.48, respectively. It was observed that per hectare net return was Tk. 14296.78, 27285.54 and 38615.72 for the owner, cash tenant, and crop share tenant farmers, respectively. This result indicated that crop share tenant farmer earned more profit than the other group of farmers. The undiscounted BCR were 1.14, 1.30, and 1.49 in owner, cash tenant and crop share tenant farmers, respectively. Finally, it was observed that more profit could be earned by reallocating of resources following a series of interrelated reform measuresItem AN ECONOMIC STUDY ON IMPROVED PULSES IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NORTHERN REGION OF BANGLADESH(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2013) RAHMAN, MD. RAKIBURPulses are excellent sources of protein, but they are treated as minor crop and receive little attention from farmers and policymakers. Recent statistics shows that Lentil mungbean cover about 59.26 percent of the total cropped area under pulses and provide about 58.31 percent of total pulse production . The overall objective of the present study was to examine socio-demographic profile of lentil, chickpea, mungbean and blackgram farmers who are using improved varieties, to assess profitability and resource use efficiency of improved varieties of lentil, chickpea, mungbean and blackgram, and to assess cooperative advantage of lentil. Pabna and Rajshahi district was selected for the study on the basis of intensive cultivation of those crops. Simple random sampling technique had been used for collecting cross sectional data and information from 50 farmers for each crop. Thus, data were collected from a total of 200 farmers through interview schedule. After analyzing the data, per hectare gross return of lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram were found to be Tk. 90200.00, Tk. 84412.00, Tk. 68510.00 and Tk. 64957.00, respectively. Total costs of lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram were calculated at Tk. 57855.91, Tk. 52995.25, Tk. 49754.73 and Tk. 44455.14 per hectare, respectively. Net returns of lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram were estimated at Tk. 32344.09, Tk. 31416.75, Tk. 18755.27 and Tk. 20501.86 per hectare, respectively. Benefit Cost Ratios were found to be 1.56, 1.59, 1.38 and 1.46 for lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram, respectively. Thus, it was found that the cultivation of lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram were profitable.Production function analysis suggested that, among the variables included in the model, land preparation cost, human labour cost, seed, urea and TSP had a positive and significant effect on the yield of lentil, mungbean, chickpea and blackgram, except for, urea had a negative but significant effect on the yield of blackgram. Efficiency analysis indicated that most of the farmers inefficiently used their inputs. OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2014) BITHI, SHARMIN ZAHANThe present study was designed with a view to analyze the comparative economic aspects of the selected vegetables such as bean & bottle gourd production. A total of 60 bean & bottle gourd producing farmers were randomly selected from two villages under Gopalgonj sadar and Muksudpur Upazila in Gopalgonj. Mainly tabular analysis was done to achieve the major objectives of the study. Cobb-Douglas production function model was also used to identify and measure the specific effects of the factors on vegetables production. The findings of the study revealed that the productions of selected vegetables were profitable. The per hectare total costs of production of bottle gourd and bean were Tk. 156434 and Tk. 148183, respectively and the corresponding gross incomes were Tk.305000 and Tk. 242500, respectively. The estimated net return of producing bottle gourd and bean were Tk.148566 and Tk.94317, respectively. The results indicate that bottle gourd farmers received the highest gross return and net return compared to bean producers. The study also revealed that the farmers faced various types of problems, such as lack of irrigation facilities, shortage of human labour, high price of fertilizers and insecticides, non-availability of quality seeds, low market price of product at harvest period, lack of storage facilities and inadequate transportation facilities.Item COMPARATIVE FINANCIAL ANALYSIS AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIECY OF HIGH YIELDING RICE VARIETIES (HYV's) AND LOCAL RICE VARIETIES OF TRANSPLANT AMAN (T.AMAN) IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NARAIL DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2020) ROY, PARTHA PROTIMRice cultivation is one of the oldest agricultural practices for farmers of Narail district. Transplant and Broadcast both Aman rice are popular for farming here. Some local varieties are so popular that they restrict the popularity of modern Aman rice. By this thesis work we were trying to find out the financial comparison of this two types of Aman rice. This study was conducted during December, 2019. In Narail district there are three upazilas: Narail Sadar upazila, Kalia upazila and Lohagara upazila. The total sample sizes from three upazilas were 60 T. Aman rice cultivators. The number of sample from each upazila was 20 rice cultivators. A simple random sampling procedure was used to select the farmers who cultivate T. Aman rice in this area for collecting the data. In this study, both descriptive and statistical tools were used to analyze the data. The profitability of local and HYV T.Aman cultivation was estimated by using gross margin, net return, and benefit cost analysis. Cob-Douglas production function analysis was used to estimate the significance level of inputs. Then resource use efficiency was calculated in this research. The research found that young energetic farmers were interested in HYV’s cultivation. But the experienced farmers were interested in local varieties cultivation. For local T.Aman varieties gross margin was calculated taka 33508.73 per hectare and for HYV T.Aman varieties gross margin was calculated taka 67304.38 per hectare. Gross margin of HYV’s was calculated 33795.65 taka more than local T.Aman. On the other hand for local T.Aman net return was calculated taka 18092.77 per hectare and for HYV T.Aman varieties net return was calculated taka 36150.54 per hectare. The net return of HYV’s was calculated 18057.77 taka higher than local T.Aman. Benefit cost ratio for local T.Aman full cost and variable cost basis were calculated 1.56 and 2.98 which were greater than the HYV T.Aman 1.49 and 2.59. The thesis found producing local varieties was profitable here. The effect of land preparation cost, seedling cost and TSP cost were significant for local T.Aman rice. Other taken variables had insignificant effect on local T.Aman rice. Human labor cost, seedling cost, manure cost and supplementary irrigation cost had significant effect on gross return of HYV T,Aman rice. It was found from resource use efficiency that human labor, seeds, manure and pesticides were over utilized in local T.Aman. Farmars should reduce use of these inputs. Land preparation, Urea, TSP, DAP, Gypsum, ZnSO 4 and Irrigation were underutilized and Page | II farmers should increase use of this inputs to obtain efficiency. On the other hand Seeds, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and ZnSO 4 were over utilized in HYV T.Aman. Farmars should reduce use of these inputs. Human labor, Land preparation, Urea, SSP, DAP, Manure, Pesticides and irrigation were underutilized and farmers should increase use of this inputs to obtain efficiency. The problems of cultivating T.Aman were high input price, insufficient credit facilities/ lack of capital, shortage of agricultural labor, high wage rate, poor agronomic practice, lack of scientific knowledge and training, attack by pests and diseases, inadequate and underdeveloped market, lack of storage facilities, natural disaster etc. Government, non-government organizations and other organs of agricultural sectors should take necessary actions to overcome these problems.Item COMPARATIVE PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF BEEKEEPING USING WOODEN AND POLY HIVE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) SADIA, FATEMA TUSPoly hive provides a superior environment to raise and keep the honeybee population vigorous due to its high-tech internal facilities and sanitary system. Information on the profitability of poly hive is needed to encourage beekeepers to adopt it. The study was conducted to examine the profitability of beekeeping using wooden hive and modern poly hive technology and resource use efficiency of beekeeping in some selected areas Sirajganj, Gazipur and Satkhira districts of Bangladesh. Besides, sociodemographic profile and the major problems of beekeeping in the study area were also investigated. The study area was selected purposively on the basis of intensive cultivation of bee plants. A total of 60 beekeepers were selected using stratified random sampling technique to conduct farm level survey with pre-tested questionnaire. After analysing the data, gross return, net return and gross margin were found to be Tk. 11019.26 , Tk. 4082.45 and Tk. 8660.5 per hive per year respectively for wooden hive, and Tk. 27373.34, Tk. 19838.42, and Tk. 24736.14per hive per year respectively for poly hive. Total cost of beekeeping was Tk. 6936.81 and Tk. 7534.92 per hive for wooden and poly hive respectively. Undiscounted BCR were 1.59 and 3.63 for wooden and poly hive. Thus, it was found that beekeeping was profitable and it was very efficient and suitable in poly hive in comparison to traditional wooden hives. From production function analysis, it was observed that labor cost, transportation cost, insecticide cost, equipment cost, hive cost, rent cost and poly hive have significant effect on return. Resource use efficiency analysis indicated that labor cost, medicine cost, equipment cost, and extraction cost were under used in the study area. It is contributing significantly to the country's economy and food security. The sample frame for this research was purposively chosen to include areas with extensive potato farming. A sample size of 80 farmers who cultivated potato in Munshiganj district was chosen. This research aimed to investigate the socio-demographic profile of potato farmers, assess the comparative profitability and resource use efficiency of hybrid and local varieties of potatoes, and identify the problems faced by farmers during potato cultivation. The research found that high yielding variety potato cultivation was more profitable than local variety potato cultivation, with an undiscounted benefit cost ratio of 1.20 compared to 1.02 for local variety potato cultivation. The study also found that all the inputs were overutilized. The constrains in potato production and marketing include high rotting rate during storage, low price of output, high cost of storage facilities, scarcity of quality seed, problems of middlemen in the market, lack of modern cultivation knowledge, and unavailability of credit and extension services. To assess the profitability, contribution of factors to production, and changes in the socioeconomic status of the farmers, a study was conducted in Rarirchar, Borogovindapur and Madhaya villages of Chandina Upazilla to examine the profitability, contribution of factors in yield, and socioeconomic status of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) producing farmers. The study was conducted used a straightforward random sampling technique. To evaluate the effects on tomato output, the major production parameters included seeds, labor, land preparation, fertilizer, manure, irrigation, and pesticides were taken into account. Summer tomatoes produced by farmers brought in the best profit of the two varieties. Summer tomato gross returns per hectare was Tk. 1206555 and net return was Tk. 557838, while winter tomato gross returns were Tk. 825538, and the equivalent net returns were Tk. 204984. The benefit cost ratio for summer tomatoes was 1.86 while the benefit cost ratio for winter tomatoes was 1.33. The coefficient of determination (R 2 ) was approximately 0.68 for summer tomatoes, indicating that the independent variables can account for about 68 percent of differences in tomato production and R 2 was 0.671 for winter tomatoes and indicating that the independent variables can account for about 67 percent of differences in tomato production. The results showed that the variables for irrigation, fertilizer, and insecticides had a significant favorable impact on tomato output for both summer and winter tomatoes. In terms of resource efficiency, hired labor and irrigation are overutilized for both summer and winter tomatoes. This research summarizes the current conditions and procedures for cultivation and marketing used by dealers and farmers of cut flowers. The major goals of the current study were to determine market integration of cut flowers in different market in Dhaka, as well as to analyses profitability and variables impacting the cultivation of cut flowers (rose and gladiolus growers). In Dhaka district, Savar upazila were chosen for the study due to the area's extensive cut-flower farming. Data from 77 sample farmers were gathered using a multi-stage random sampling approach and an interview schedule. Following data analysis, the per- hectare costs for roses, gross returns, gross margins, and net returns were Tk. 576861, Tk. 808492, Tk. 433775, and Tk. 231631, respectively, while the costs for gladiolus were Tk. 576703, Tk. 1005231, Tk. 640789, and Tk. 428528, respectively. Benefit cost ratios for the cultivation of roses, and gladiolus were 1:1.40 and 1:1.74, respectively, on a full cost basis. They were 1:2.15 and 1:2.75 on a cash cost basis. Despite the fact that producing roses and gladiolus was quite profitable. About to 92% of farmers who grow roses and 96% of farmers who cultivate gladiolus, respectively, inadequate cold storage and seasonality in demand were the main obstacles for farmers. The resources use efficiency, seed, urea, TSP are underutilize for both rose and gladiolus cultivation human labor and gypsum are over utilize for both this flower cultivation. Finds of suggest that, rose growers require a high yielding rose variety to increase per unit productivity. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize government assistance for ensuring farmers receive a fair price as well as technology diffusion initiatives.
