Libraries of Islamic World: Challenges of 21st Century

The paper will discuss about causes and benefits of developing library science in the Muslim world. Paper will also give some important points for developing library and library science of the Islamic world and Muslim people all over the world which will drive us to the reviving process of our golden age of science and knowledge. If we ignore library science definitely our research and innovation sector will be speed less and our existence will be meaningless.
Information use pattern of ph.d. Researchers of Bangladesh agricultural university in fisheries science : a citation study

The information use pattern of researchers in fisheries science was studied by analyzing 10068 citations of 44 doctoral dissertations submitted at the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences in Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh during the period 1973 to June 2012. The study reveals that researchers under the study have primarily depended on periodicals of Fisheries Sciences and its allied branches for their source of information. The more cited periodicals (Journals, Bulletin, Proceedings etc.) and non-periodicals (Books, Govt. publications, Theses etc.) were published within 50 years from some preferred countries such as Bangladesh, UK, USA, India, Netherlands, etc. The majority of citations were in English language.
Trends in Citation Pattern in Agricultural Doctoral Theses of Bangladesh Agricultural University

By the method of citation analysis an attempt has been made to identify the main sources of citations and prepare a list of the most important journals used in various disciplines of Agricultural Sciences in Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh (i.e. Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, Agricultural Engineering & Technology and Fisheries). In addition to it, a list of 123 most cited primary journals in order to their merit has been prepared. The geographical and chronological scattering of citations has also been included in the study. The information inferred in the paper may be of helpful to Agricultural University Libraries of Bangladesh to arrive at a need-based consideration in the selection and acquisition of journals within the limited budgets.
A Study on Master Plan Projection

Daffodil International University (DIU) is on its way to be the number one ranked university of Bangladesh by providing quality education and making leader for the future. As a top ranked university of Bangladesh, the quality and the IT based education system has created the university as a model of excellence for other universities of Bangladesh. Arrangement of different faculties, innovative programs under different departments, strong administration members, etc. has made Daffodil International University as unique one. By keeping its uniqueness, DIU is going to build the number one Permanent Campus of a private university with all modern and latest educational facilities and the work of the Permanent Campus at Ashulia was started on 10th February, 2011. The Permanent Campus project is in progress and will be implemented in four phases and it will have individual faculty and administrative infrastructure, residential hall, library, cafeteria, TSC, auditorium, playground, swimming pool, gymnasium, departmental faculties, and ICT center. This study is designed to describe the establishment and the authentic growth of DIU main campus, in details, to demonstrate the future plan of this university as a guideline for future development of a university Master Plan and it covers the entire activities done by DIU and future planning for completing the Permanent Campus at Ashulia.
Total Quality Management (TQM) for Improving Quality Service in University Libraries: A Conceptual View

Nowadays, libraries are passing challenging time in providing quality services for its users. Libraries are service organizations dedicated to their users and Quality management is the basis for library management in general. Libraries and librarians are required to demonstrate to top management of the university that they are getting a good return on their investments in the library. This paper highlights the importance of total quality management in university libraries, deals with TQM objectives, aims to focus on how they can provide better quality services to its users with limited resources in using TQM effective management tools and principles. As such, a conceptual view has been built for the utilization of TQM in university libraries.
Change Management in Academic Libraries: An Experience

Abstract: Change is so fundamental to all things in the world that it is the most important obstacle to overcome in a game of survival of the fittest. Change management in the world entails most importantly both human and equipment. Change Management is vital for the survival and development of any organization. Libraries and information services face many challenges from rapidly changes in the information environment. This paper explains the model of change levers in the library management. Academic libraries are facing various aspects of challenges both externally and internally. Observes that change in quality, marketing, technology and costs are much visible and change in strategy, structure, human resource management and leadership are less visible. Conclude that change in management of libraries is inevitable.
Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Faculty Members of Agricultural Universities in Bangladesh: A Study

Abstract: Information seeking is an impressive challenge and it is one of a substantial issue for Information Science. This study was undertaken to determine the information seeking behavior and library use by faculty members at the Agricultural University in Bangladesh. The overall purpose of the study was to determine what their information requirements and also determine their purpose of library services available for them in the library. The study collected data on the information requirements of faculty members. Data were gathered from 600 faculty members out of 905 through open and closed questionnaire. Findings indicate that guidance in the use of library resources and services are necessary to help them meet some of their information requirements. Finding also their seeking problems, using searching tools and level of satisfaction overall resources and services.
WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGIES: BUILDING THE NEW WEB-BASED LIBRARIES

Abstract: This paper discusses and highlights the potential of Web 2.0 in the context of libraries. Internet in general and Web in particular are playing a vital role in computer-mediated scholarly communication. The objective of this study is to identify the purpose, characteristics, support system in research and changing environment as a result of using Web 2.0 technologies and tools. The findings of the study acknowledge the strength of Web 2.0 tools in improving library services for users. Really Simple Syndication (RSS), Instant Messaging (IM) and Blogs are popular in webbased libraries. The paper concludes by offering best practices for implementing Web 2.0 tools for new web-based libraries. Thus, these emerging web-based features (Web 2.0) are opening up new avenues and giving libraries the ability to offer the improved, customer-driven services to the user communities.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) in Academic Libraries: Perception and Reality

In this digital era academic libraries are already facing their greatest challenges and difficulties with multiple communication channels. For more than a decade, academic libraries have been under the pressure to change its way of operation and management due to constraint of budget and the appearance of online resources. These situations cause the libraries to value their development of resource and the application of library marketing to better service. How to retain and increase users through enhancement of service becomes the great concern of library managers/ librarians. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is not a tactical or functional approach but a key strategic process. A comprehensive CRM is highlighted with its pillars, characteristics, basic principles, initiatives in libraries, library service, significance, model and 4S, and user satisfaction through evaluating academic libraries in this study.
Customer Satisfaction of Real Estate Buyers of Dhaka City: A Survey on Customer Perception and Expectation

Bangladesh is an overpopulated country and the capital city Dhaka is among the most densely populated cities of the world. As the number of inhabitants living in this city is increasing due to the continuous insurgence of people looking for a living, it is difficult to solve the housing problem. The real estate companies are trying to provide housing for these people, but at the recent times they have failed to meet customers’ expectation. As a result, customers are now more interested to rent a house rather than to buy one. This article shows the perception and expectation of real estate buyers of Dhaka city in different dimensions Preferences between ready plot and apartment, apartment price, types & size of apartment, favorable locations, favorable facilities, and desired services from a company. The general pattern of real estate sector along with current and future demand is also portrayed from the point of view of different related articles. Some suggestions are made for marketers for making the new apartment structure, pricing policy, distribution method, assessment of customer’s needs and demands.
Marketing of Library and Information Services in University Libraries: A Practical Experience

The concept of marketing is widely applicable in library and information environment. Now marketing is whole organization concept which requires years of continual activities. Marketing of library services is the effective execution of all the activities involved in enhancing satisfaction of users by providing maximum value of them. It is a total solution for library and information centers. There have been enormous developments in marketing of library and information services around the world. The present research paper aims to explore the discipline of marketing for librarians. Practical solutions are provided on how to implement a marketing strategy and plan with particular emphasis on the value of using information resources in libraries to the users.
Digital Environment in University Libraries: Challenges and Opportunities

The latest developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have made the concept “Libraries without walls” into a practical reality. This has posed several challenges to the information work force and the information users. Developments in computers, microelectronics and communication technologies have dramatically changed the library and information environment. In this regard, the information environment is changing greatly throughout the world. Digital libraries are emerging as an important area of research and number of other related disciplines for information science in information age. The information technology has made a profound impact on availability and accessibility of e-resources. The concept of digital libraries and its objectives in university digital system and challenges has been discussed in digital libraries environment. This research paper is highlighted infrastructure and technology as challenges facing and parameters of digital environment. With the application of IT university libraries could gradually overcome such challenges and opportunities in consideration of users’ perspective. University librarians are facing difference challenges which have been focused in this study. It is also mentioned users’ expectation and requirements for digital environment in university libraries. The paper focuses its opportunities in digital environment in university libraries.
Supply Chain Management (SCM) Revealing Quality Services in University Libraries: Experience and Realization

University library’s success depends on better services to the users of the right information at the right time. Moreover, library user’s satisfaction depends on provide proper library resources as well as update information. Update information depends on triangular activities like suppliers, organizations and library personnel. The objective of supply chain management is to coordinate the focal library’s processes and activities with those of its suppliers and customers, such that the library is provided resources and services meet or exceed user / customer requirements. The purpose of this study is to develop a serene environment for users and improves understanding of SCM to stimulate and facilitates researchers to undertake both theoretical and empirical investigation on the framework of SCM. This study also demonstrates that SCM functions, challenges and internal library services, library structure of SCM, elements of SCM. Researcher is mainly focused on triangular relationship among suppliers, library personnel and library authority (organization) to do job for fulfilling the user’s needs of information to overcome the university library’s goal.
Quality Assurance Techniques of Higher Education in Bangladesh: A Study

Quality is not a destination rather it is a continuous journey. Quality means doing the right things right. Quality of higher education develops leadership qualities in people of different professions. Higher education can play an important role in facilitating these changes and producing adequately trained manpower in various fields. Quality assurance has become a major issue in higher education of Bangladesh due to all solution depends on quality assurance and higher education. This present study discussed the concepts of quality, quality of education; quality assurance highlighted and identified its challenges and techniques of quality education. It has highlighted the quality assurance principles for achieving quality education of its objectives. This paper also mentioned the main problems and development tools of quality assurance in higher education. It has concluded that quality assurance of higher education can play very significant role to promote social economic, technological, human resource development etc., which are highly correlated
Doctoral Theses of Agricultural Faculty of BAU: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1974 to 2014

This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the doctoral theses, for the period from 1974 to 2014, awarded in the Faculty of Agriculture at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, in the fields of agronomy, soil science, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, crop botany, genetics & plant breeding, agricultural extension, agricultural chemistry and bio-chemistry, bio-tech, environmental science and seed science & technology. The distributions of Ph.D. theses have been analyzed and identified year-wise, subject-wise, gender-wise and guide-wise. Findings from the present study show that 277 (91.10%) PhD holders are male and 27 (8.9%) female. A total of 86 Professors supervised 304 doctoral theses in Agriculture Faculty during 1974 to 2014. PhD scholars cited journals (37.9%) and text books (31.8%). It is also revealed that no thesis was submitted during 1975-77 and 1981-1988. BAU has been producing quality agricultural scientists and technologists to take up their places in the agricultural development of the country.
RFID Technology: Building a New Environment in Academic Libraries

At present, libraries and information services are facing many challenges while transformation from traditional methods to electronic methods. In this digital era, technology has dramatically changed user’s need for information service as well as it saved the time of the users. RFID (Radio Frequency of Identification) technology is not only promising but also more convenient, efficient, and cost-effective -in library security. Library circulation system and shelving of the reading materials are quite cumbersome works which require lot of staff time. RFID provides a solution to such problems by reducing the amount of time required to perform circulation services. This research paper covers the advantages and disadvantages as well as application of the RFID technology in library management cycle. The operational benefits and borrowing process cycle of RFID technologies in libraries are discussed. This paper revealed how RFID technology changed the library environment. Its basic and optional components of RFID technology are also mentioned. A few academic libraries in Bangladesh have already implemented RFID technology and library professionals are providing right services more efficiently and library environment looks very smatter, as a result user satisfaction level is enhancing day by day and library resources are being properly used by the users.
Rabindranath Knowledge Park at DIU Library
