ZabedThis paper reports on an empirical study of novices’ searching with a web-based IR interface. Two different novice groups took part in this study. The NP group took part in the initial performance experiment. The NLM group took part in two different tests. The first test measured their learnability with the interface after a brief “hands-on” training. The second test was run four weeks after the learning in order to assess their memorability of search skills. Novices’ performance across all experiments was measured in terms of time taken to complete search tasks, search terms used, error rates, and success of the tasks performed. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface was also measured at the end of all tests. The results of the study showed that novices could readily perform simple search tasks. Novices’ performance improved significantly when a brief “hands-on” training was provided. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface also improved after the training. However, novices’ memorability of search skill was poor. Their satisfaction with the interface also diminished during memorability test. The paper concludes with some principles of effective IR interface design for naive searchers.Item A doctoral thesis on national plans for library development in Bangladesh 1947-83(©University of Dhaka, 2023-05-23) Hossain, SerwarItem A plan for modernization of university libraries in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2015-01-28) Rahman, Md. ZillurThis study aims to propose a modernization plan for university libraries of Bangladesh. The study discusses the present conditions of the university libraries as well as finds out the systems and services provided by the sampled university libraries. The objectives of the study were to find out the advancement in university libraries in the developed world; to find out the present scenario of university libraries of Bangladesh; to specify the sectors and divisions of university libraries needed to be modernized to implement the proposed plan; to assess the requirements for modernization of university libraries of Bangladesh; to conduct a comparative study on public and private university libraries to assess the existing status; to develop a plan for modernization of university libraries of Bangladesh; to find out barriers and limitations of modernization issues; and to put recommendation and concluding remarks. A survey was conducted to gather information from the sample university libraries and their stakeholders. Twenty (10 public and 10 private) out of 111 university libraries have been selected purposively as a sample to conduct the study. Data have been collected by two sets of structured questionnaires, unstructured interviews of the senior professionals, observation and field visit of the sample universities to uncover the situation. The research finds that present condition of university libraries (public and private) of Bangladesh is not fully in line with the demand of higher studies and expansion of new education system. The findings of the study have been presented with eight chapters, 54 tables, and 32 figures/charts with detailed explanations. The researcher feels a larger percentage of the universities and its stakeholders may have participated but due to some constraints that was not possible. The research was conducted on the universities’ main library excluding seminar and institutional libraries. Twenty-three newly established university libraries were not included in the study. The cost benefit effect of the proposed model has not been taken into consideration. Furthermore, the technological aspects for implementation of the model have also not been taken into account due to resource constraints. This research provides an elementary model plan for establishing a modern university library for the country. Necessary phases have been incorporated to implement the plan so that university libraries can change their present conditions and future libraries can get right direction from the beginning. Therefore, it makes provisions not only for ensuring an effective guideline for policy makers from the part of the government but also university libraries of all kinds will find helpful directions to transform their existing situation towards modernization. The researchers’ in this field will find new possibilities towards further research.Item A Study of Digital Preservation Practices in Selected University Libraries in Bangladesh(© University of Dhaka, 2025-11-05) Bhuiyan, Mohammad Shakaought HossainPreserving the library materials and making them accessible to the scholars and general users is very important for the university libraries. Therefore, the researcher decided to study on digital preservation practices in selected university libraries in Bangladesh. The purpose of the study was to investigate the existing condition of digital preservation practices in selected university libraries in Bangladesh. The study used a quantitative research approach based on the research objectives, and questionnaires were made for the users for 15 selected universities in Bangladesh. Data were collected through two sets of structured questionnaires for two distinct groups that were developed and refined with a pilot survey to ensure clarity and reliability. The population and sample were covered by librarians/library administrators, and library users from the 15 selected university libraries. In this study, the researcher has taken a non-provability sampling approach and chosen the purposive sampling method. The researcher distributed a total of 700 structured questionnaires among the teachers, students, and researchers of the selected university libraries. Out of 700 questionnaires, a total of 433 filled questionnaires were received with a response rate of 61.85%. For this study, collected data were analyzed using the IBM® SPSS® Statistics Version software. Ethical considerations, including informed consent and data confidently, were strictly followed to uphold the integrity of the research process. The findings from this study revealed that university libraries in Bangladesh were significantly affected by the changes to the digital environment. Most university libraries face many challenges that hinder the effective implementation of digital preservation. The challenges include absence of established standards and policies, inadequate funding, copyright and intellectual property rights issues, lack of skilled manpower, staff training and development, technology problems, lack of collaboration efforts, machine dependency, metadata, lack of equipment, insufficient staff, poor technology infrastructure, technological obsolescence, congested workspace, etc. The study also provides several recommendations, including infrastructure and access, skilled manpower and training, allocating sufficient budget and resources, addressing legal issues, providing software for digital preservation, developing policies for digital preservation, providing sufficient training for staff, adopting international standards, enhancing facilities and tools, taking administrative actions, providing legal deposit of e-content, etc. The result of the study contributes to the field by providing a detailed analysis of digital preservation practices in the context of Bangladeshi university libraries. The findings offer valuable insights vi into the current state of digital preservation, the challenges faced by institutions, and user satisfaction with digital resources. The study's recommendations have practical implications for improving digital preservation strategies and can serve as a guide for other institutions facing similar challenges.Item A webometric analysis of private university websites in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2015-05-21) Sultana, SajiaThere have been many research studies conducted on webometrics, especially on the impact of websites and the web impact factor. This current research analyzes the private university websites in Bangladesh according to some common webometrics indicators. It examines and explores 54 private university websites in Bangladesh and identifies the number of web pages and link pages, and calculates their Simple Web Impact Factor, Self-link Web Impact Factor and External link Web Impact Factor. The results indicate that some private universities have relatively high number of web pages, but correspondingly their link pages are low in number and the websites fall behind in their simple, self-link and external link web impact factors. It is also found that the external link web pages provide more than other link pages. Based on these findings, it is clear that the private universities in Bangladesh do not have much visibility on the web. In a cross sectional study, the websites are analyzed and compared using Google and Blekko search engines and tested by histogram, scatter plot and the line of best fit for reliability and then by regression analysis. The search results obtained are also compared using related ttest. This research also used SocSciBot personal web crawler to generate link data to develop micro-link topology. The result shows that the private universities in Bangladesh are not wellconnected in the topology framework. Finally, the major reasons for webometric ranking are discussed and the suggestions for improving the ranking of universities are presented.Item An analysis of the functions and workings of university libraries in Bangladesh(©University of Dhaka, 2023-05-23) Rahman, AfifaItem An empirical investigation of information retrieval skills among undergraduate students at Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-07) Ferdows, JannatulItem An examination of library anxiety among students at Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-14) Aziz, Mst. Zahid HossainThis research investigated the service quality scores through LibQUAL+ attributes to find out the users’ thought of the services that a library might offer. This study additionally had a focus on improvement of services and strategic enhancement of academic libraries in Bangladesh. The assessment was conducted in six top-ranked university libraries in Bangladesh, i.e. University of Dhaka (DU), Rajshahi University (RU), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Data were collected from the faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students. The research questions that framed the investigation were related to service adequacy, service superiority, service quality expectation, services in the tolerable areas, dimensionwise data reduction and validity of dimensions, and several significance differences by gender and individual user. Descriptive statistics, analysis of dimension reduction, and various nonparametric tests were conducted for different statistical measures. The investigation revealed the overall scenario of service performance through the perception of the users. Overall, the users considered the library service operations are far behind from the minimum level except for one library, i.e. IUBL. The study found that most perceived service scores are low; these affected the minimum acceptable service performance by the libraries. The study revealed that the desired expectations are high, which affected service adequacy and service superiority scores. Statistically significant differences were found by gender and individual user groups. For two libraries, i.e. RUL and BUETL, more dimensions were extracted, whereas IUBL data revealed only two dimensions. The three-dimensional factors were loaded for the remaining three libraries. In-spite of the variations observed with the dimensionalities, confirmatory factor analysis endured overall LibQUAL+ original dimensions. Based on these analyses, this research made recommendations for the strategic and operational improvement of the libraries.Item Annotated Bibliography PH.D Theses Available In The Dhaka University Library(©University of Dhaka, 2023-05-21) Alam, Md. ShahidulInformation is a vital resource of every sphere of human life. The role of information in education sector is very important and also essential in the modern age. Information is necessary for information seekers, e.g. researchers, faculty members, students and others. Library provides information and other resources to its users in the private university. Information needs and satisfaction of the users are fully depended on the performance of the library. Users’ satisfaction of the private university library depends on the library services, library systems, library facilities and infrastructural development. User satisfaction lies in the quality services provided by the library, responsiveness and competence of the library staff and available physical facilities of the library. The goal of the library depends on the satisfaction level of the users. This study has been attempted to assess information needs and satisfaction level of the private university library users in Dhaka city. For conducting this study two sets of questionnaires were designed. One set of questionnaire was prepared for the survey of the library resources and another set of questionnaire was for the library users. This study has been conducted for identifying present status of resources and services of private university libraries; to measure information needs and level of users’ satisfaction and also identify the problems faced by the users. A university striving for excellence and growth must have a world class library meeting all the academic needs of its students and teachers. In this context, universities would like to achieve positive feedback from their library professionals and would like to see their library professionals proactively contributing more to the growth of a library. It is, therefore, important that the universities give emphasis on three areas of job for smooth functioning of their libraries: enhancing the job involvement; increasing the level of job satisfaction and mediating personality traits. This present research has attempted to investigate the level of job involvement and its relationship with two other variables namely personality traits and job satisfaction of university library professionals of Bangladesh. The term of job involvement is basically analyzed in the area of psychology, sociology or business. From the review of literature, it has been observed that no research was done on job involvement in libraries of Bangladesh. The main aim of this research is to investigate the level of job involvement of library professionals who are working in select university libraries in Bangladesh. The specific objectives of the study are:(1) to determine whether there is a significant relationship between background variables and job involvement; (2) to determine whether there is a significant relationship between job involvement and personality traits of library professionals; (3)to assess whether there is a significant relationship between job involvement and job satisfaction of library professionals; (4) to investigate the most critical impact among all variables (Personality traits and Job satisfaction) towards job involvement of library professionals; and (5)to suggest the remedial measures that should be taken to involve in the job of library professionals in Bangladesh. Based on these objectives, the study focused on answering four research questions. The research areas of this study are 15 universities of Bangladesh. Universities of Bangladesh were categorized into public and private universities. The population and sample of this study were covered by all library professionals who are working at the central libraries of public universities and those who are working at private university libraries in Bangladesh. The simple purposive sampling method was chosen for the study. Data was collected by a structured questionnaire that consisted of 79 items. There were four parts of the survey questionnaire asked to library professionals concerning job involvement, personality traits, job satisfaction and background information of respondents. In total, 151 completed questionnaires were received out of 260 questionnaires distributed. The one factor confirmatory factor analysis model was performed to come with a single scaled score of all statements. Afterwards, the multiple logistic regression model was used to determine the relationship between job involvement and personality traits, job involvement and job satisfaction and relationship between job involvement, personality traits and job satisfaction of library professionals. The bivariate statistical analysis, chi-square test was used to determine the significant relationship between job involvement and demographic variables. The data for this research is analyzed using the statistical software for data science (STATA) and other appropriate statistical methods. The result revealed that low job involvement is independently associated with low personality traits and low job involvement is independently associated with low job satisfaction. The results showed that high job involvement is linked with high job satisfaction. It is observed that professionals almost agreed with nearly every of the factors of job involvement, excluding job longing, job concern, and time-consciousness. The result demonstrated that most of the professionals are moderately extrovert, conscientious and intellect or conclusive imaginable. It is also exposed that professionals are retained with agreeable traits in their personality. Most likely they are sympathetic, supportive and overall they are competent for their job. The study also identified that the majority of the respondents are more or less satisfied with all the job facets of job satisfaction. On the other hand, the type of university and years of experiences of professionals are significantly associated with job involvement. The results found that professionals working in public universities have higher job involvement than private universities. Additionally, years of experiences are found significant with the job involvement. The findings have several implications for universities attempting to strengthen professionals' operational capabilities through increased job involvement. Universities need to give more importance to personality traits and job satisfaction of library professionals to better understand their job involvement. The limitations of this study include a relatively small sample size for conducting this type of research. Additionally, the study provides suggestions for further research in this area. This finding provides managerial information for university authority in terms of how to improve the level of jobs involvement of their library professionals. Consequently, it provides constructive suggestions to university authorities to introduce a standard performance appraisal system for library job that can be structured together with personality traits and job satisfaction to get better job involvement of university library professionals in Bangladesh.Item Assessing Service Quality of Healthcare libraries in Bangladesh: A LibQUAL Study(University of Dhaka, 2019-03-20) Burhun Uddin, MuhammadItem Assessing the impact of internet in library and information services: A study of some higher academic institutions in Bangladesh(©University of Dhaka, 2023-05-22) Islam, Md.
