Shamsul Islam; Ahmed, S.M. Zabed; Munshi, Md. Nasir Uddin; Akhter, NilufarPresents the results of a statistical analysis of the papers on various aspects of library and information science (LIS) emanated from Bangladesh during 1966-1997. The analysis is based on a list of papers compiled to show the growth and size of the LIS literature in Bangladesh, patterns of their distribution by subjects within the field of librarianship, characteristics of the contributing periodicals, language of publication, authorship patterns, and geographic distribution of the periodicals. The results of the study showed that, during 1966-1997, a total of 308 articles, authored by 116 library professionals were published in various periodicals with the highest number (256, 83.11%) in Bangladesh, followed by India (21, 6.82%). All these papers were published in some 37 periodicals originating from 14 countries. About 92% of the articles were credited to the single authorship; only 25 articles were co-authored. Problems in library research in Bangladesh have also been discussed, and some suggestions have been put forward to improve the overall situation.Item A comparison of novices' initial performance, learnability and memorability with a web based IR interface(Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science, 2006-12) Ahmed, S.M. ZabedThis paper reports on an empirical study of novices’ searching with a web-based IR interface. Two different novice groups took part in this study. The NP group took part in the initial performance experiment. The NLM group took part in two different tests. The first test measured their learnability with the interface after a brief “hands-on” training. The second test was run four weeks after the learning in order to assess their memorability of search skills. Novices’ performance across all experiments was measured in terms of time taken to complete search tasks, search terms used, error rates, and success of the tasks performed. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface was also measured at the end of all tests. The results of the study showed that novices could readily perform simple search tasks. Novices’ performance improved significantly when a brief “hands-on” training was provided. Their subjective satisfaction with the interface also improved after the training. However, novices’ memorability of search skill was poor. Their satisfaction with the interface also diminished during memorability test. The paper concludes with some principles of effective IR interface design for naive searchers.Item Nutrition literature of Bangladesh: a bibliometric study(Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science, 2008-07) Ahmed, S.M. ZabedThis paper presents the results of a bibliometric analysis of nutrition literature of Bangladesh. A list of periodical articles on various aspects of nutrition research of Bangladesh published during 1972 - 2006 was compiled for analysis. A total of 636 articles by 998 authors were identified. The articles were published in 100 local and foreign journals. The five-yearly distribution of nutrition literature shows that there is a rapid growth of nutrition literature from 1987 onwards. Lotka’s law is found to be applicable to nutrition literature of Bangladesh. Bradford-Zipf distribution also appears to be applicable to the literature.Item Lotka's law and authorship distribution in nutrition research in Bangladesh(Annals of Library and Information Studies, 2009-06) Ahmed, S.M. Zabed; Rahman, Md. AnisurThis paper examines the validity of Lotka's law to authorship distribution in the field of nutrition research in Bangladesh. A list of periodical articles on various aspects of nutrition research in Bangladesh published during 1972-2006 was compiled for analysis. Using "full productivity" of authorship, a total of998 personal author names were identified. Lotka's law was tested using both generalized and modified fonns and Kolmogorov-Smimov goodness-of-fit tests were applied. The results suggest that author productivity distribution predicted in Lotka's generalized inverse square law is not applicable to nutrition research of Bangladesh. Using least-squares excluding high productive authors and maximum likelihood methods, Lotka's law is found to be applicable to nutrition research of Bangladesh.Item A bibliometric analysis of diarrhoeal disease in Bangladesh(Annals of Library and Infonnation Studies, 2011-06) Khatun, Asma; Ahmed, S.M. SarwarBooks, Newspapers, Magazines, Essays / Composition of different natures, sound films, videos etc which can be now available for digital collection evaluation, processing, preservation and make them understand by all types of readers in electronic form. Internet or CD ROM (can be read only) are in disk form. By the help of Digital Library (DL) one can learn and understand everything about history and knowledge of different culture- traditional & scientific knowledge of different languages and people of all the countries of the globe starting from the beginning of ancient people till today, all the people of the world (educated, uneducated, ignorant, deaf and dumb) in their houses or office while sitting or moving by a transport by the help of Laptop or mobile phones in their own language they can read, listen and visualize above all things to enrich their regarding knowledge.Item An Internship on Libraries and Information Institutions: A Case Study of Dhaka University Library(2013-02-27) Helen, AnitaItem Knowledge sharing practices among the graduates in Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2013-10-02) Al-Naheyan, ChowdhuryThis study is an effort to keep in record the prevailing status of the knowledge sharing practices among graduates in Dhaka University before going into the principal part of the thesis the researcher has tried to give a brief description regarding knowledge sharing attitude and practices in different sectors.Item Exploring the Overall Scenario of English Medium School Library Systems & Services in Dhaka City(University of Dhaka, 2013-10-02) Sultana, SharminItem Use of social media by public and private university students: A demographic comparison(University of Dhaka, 2013-10-02) Mondal, PopyItem Student’s Preference for Online Catalogue Search: Discovery Tool Vs Traditional OPAC Interface(University of Dhaka, 2013-10-03) Yesmin, ShamimaItem Reading Habits and Attitude in the Digital Environment: A Study of ISLM Students of Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2013-10-06) Ahmed, ShahinurItem Current trends of library automation in Bangladesh: A study of some selected academic libraries and special libraries(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-07) Haque, FarzanaItem Trends of ICT integration into university curriculum: Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-07) Borna, Hasna HenaItem An empirical investigation of information retrieval skills among undergraduate students at Dhaka University(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-07) Ferdows, JannatulItem Librarians’ attitude towards library digitization(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-11) Yeasmin, RumanaItem Users’ adoption of a digital library system: A case study of East West University library(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-11) Tabassum, MashiatItem Assessing the potential use of Social Networking Sites ( SNSs) in academic library services: A case study of Dhaka University library(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-11) Sourave, Ahmadul HasanItem Interoperability among university libraries in Bangladesh: Data exchange feasibility(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-12) Das, Suzon ChandraLibraries have been cooperating and collaborating on collection building and resource sharing for many years. The cooperation was based on inter-library loan and preparation and publication of union catalogue. In Bangladesh, the ways of cooperation in building resources and access to information resources was not easy and effective in manual way. Since last decade, due to rapid emergence of ICTs in Library field, ways of library resource building and resource sharing have become more easier and efficient than manual way. In the digital era, the term “Interoperability” has become main focusing issue in the field of library resource sharing or information exchange. But questions have been arisen when libraries started to computerize their bibliographic information using different platforms. When the libraries using different platforms, i.e.- Integrated Library System, Single Alone Software, simple Script Language, etc., try to interoperate among themselves, data exchange feasibility becomes main issue. There are many International Standards in developing Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) followed by different libraries in Bangladesh which create major barriers in building interoperability because of inconsistency among themselves. This study was carried out to identify the data exchange feasibility among the university libraries, to show how the inconsistency among different platforms can be removed and thus how university libraries can join in a uniform platform. In the study those university libraries were selected as sample which are in front position in applying ICTs in their work settings. These selected libraries represents most of the automated university libraries in Bangladesh. A questionnaire was developed based on the present ICTs trends in university libraries. This questionnaire judges the capability of the libraries to be interoperable through Z39.50/SRW protocol. This protocol was in main concern when developing the interoperability model. In the study, 7 libraries were found that can create MARC format records. These libraries can directly host bibliographic records into Z39.50 Server. The rest libraries cannot produce MARC format records, but follow MARC fields in catalogue data entry. To convert the bibliographic records of these university libraries into MARC format, MARCedit tool was used. After converting into MARC format, these records can be hosted in Z39.50 Server. Thus, we can achieve our desirable interoperability among most of the automated university libraries in Bangladesh.
