It is considered as the national fish of Bangladesh and contributes significantly to the national economy. The Hilsa fish is available almost throughout the year in the major rivers and their tributaries, as well as in the Bay of Bengal. The present study aimed to elucidate the livelihood status of Hilsa fishermen at Barishal district in Bangladesh during August, 2017 to August 2018 through questionnaire survey method. The findings showed that, 58.3% fishermen had Hilsa fishing experience of (0-20) years. Near about 100% fishermen reported that Hilsa population is increasing day by day because of imposing the banning period by the government. The present study revealed that 16.7% had monthly income up to Tk. 10,000, 21.7% had monthly income from Tk. 11,000 – Tk. 15,000, 41.6% had monthly income Tk. 15,000- Tk. 20,000 and above monthly income Tk. 20,000, the percentage of fishermen was 20%. In banning period 40% of the fishermen had income level was zero, 25% had total income upto Tk. 20,000 and 15% had total income Tk. 21,000- Tk. 25,000. To conquer the vulnerable condition of Hilsa fishermen during banning season, govt. has already taken some steps including subsidy (by VGF) to the true fishermen through which govt. allocated 40 kg rice/month for three months for every fishermen. But unfortunately they did not get actually quantity due to the dishonesty of local members and chairman. The socio-economic condition of the fishermen in the adjacent area was not satisfactory. The fishermen were deprived of many amenities. Ban of all kinds of fishing for 2 months has positive impact on production of Hilsa and other fishes. But due to ban of all types of fishing gears fishers livelihood have been affected during this ban period as they do not have any alternate income generating activities. Providing some sorts of management policy as well as providing of some extra providence during the ban season of the fishing which may be done within the provision of the VGF card might be recommended for the better livelihood of the fishermen in greater Barishal region. The problems and constraints, of course are interrelated with one another and hence, need to be removed comprehensively through an integrated program for the better livelihood of the Hilsa fishermen.Item FINANCIAL PROFITABILITY AND RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF BRINJAL CULTIVATION IN SOME SELECTED AREA OF GAZIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) HOSSEN, MOHAMMAD SHAHADATThe present study was designed to determine the financial profitability and resource use efficiency of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) cultivation in some selected area of Gazipur district. A total of 90 brinjal farmers from three upazila namely Sreepur (30), Kapasia (30), and Kaliakair (30) were selected. Tabular technique and statistical technique such as Cobb douglas production function was used to achieve the major objectives of the study. The major findings of the study revealed that brinjal production was highly profitable. The total cost of production was estimated Tk. 265617, Tk. 262652 and Tk. 252640 per hectare for Sreepur, Kapasia and Kaliakair upazila respectively. The average total cost was Tk. 260303. Total yield per hectare were 268890 kg, 29905 kg and 26812 kg for Sreepur, Kapasia and Kaliakair respectively. The average per unit brinjal price was Tk. 15 for all areas. Gross return for Sreepur, Kapasia and Kaliakair upazila were Tk. 430240, Tk. 418670 and Tk. 402180 respectively. Net return per hectare was Tk. 164623, Tk. 156018 and Tk. 149540 respectively. The average net return was Tk. 157732 per hectare. BCR on full and variable cost were 1.62 and 2.02, 1.60 and 1.98, 1.59 and 2.08 for Sreepur, Kapasia and Kaliakair upazila respectively. The average BCR on full and variable cost were 1.60 and 2.03 which implies that one taka investment generated 0.60 Tk. and 1.03 Tk. respectively. The regression coefficient of hired labor, land preparation, chemical fertilizers, irrigation and pesticide showed positive and significant effect and seedling, manure showed insignificant effect. The coefficient of multiple determinations, R 2 and F-value were 79% and 43.48 which indicated good fit of a model. The ratio of MVP and MFC of hired labor, seedling, land preparation, manure, chemical fertilizers, irrigation and pesticide was 0.54, 4.25, 3.32, -0.06, 2.03, 2.71 and 4.22 respectively. It indicated that farmers in the study areas were over utilizing hired labor, and manure. On the other hand seedling, land preparation, chemical fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticide were underutilized. Farmers faced many problems in the study area during brinjal production. Among them inset infection, higher price of pesticides, lack of quality seedling, high wage rate of labor, lack of human labor were major problems of brinjal cultivation. Supply of inputs and improvement of market facilities can play an important role in increasing brinjal production.Item PROFITABILITY AND TECHNIAL EFFICIENCY OF ONION CULTIVATION IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF PABNA DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, 2018) SKHAKIB, MD. NAZMUSThe present study was designed to measure the profitability and technical efficiency of Onion farmers in selected areas of two area in Sadar Upazila and Sujanagar Upazila under Pabna District. Primary data were collected from randomly selected 100 farmers in study area form selected village. Both tabular and functional analyses were applied in this study. The major findings of the study reveal that Onion production is profitable. Total cost of production was Tk. 216352.58 per hectare. Gross returns was Tk. 413808 per hectare and Net returns was Tk. 197455.42 per hectare. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was found to be 1.91 which implies that one taka investment in Onion production generated Tk. 1.91. The Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function was used for this study to measure technical efficiency of Onion farmers. The coefficients of parameters like deviation of a farmer from the best-practice frontier. The regression coefficients of Human labor, Seed, Urea, TSP, MoP, DAP, Zinc and Irrigation were positive but the coefficient of Magnesium and Irrigation was negative. Where human labour was found positive and significance at 5 percent level of significant and urea was significance at 1 percent level of significant. In the technical inefficiency effect model years of education, credit service, experience, member of social organization and training have expected (negative) coefficients. Coefficients indicating that this helps in reducing technical inefficiency of Onion farmers. The study revealed that a considerable improvement took place to increase household income of the farmers in the study area and to improve the socioeconomic conditions with the introduction of large-scale commercial Onion production. The study also identified some problems and constraints faced by the Onion farmers and suggested some recommendations to improve and would possible be increased.
