Item EFFICACY OF SEED TREATMENT WITH PLANT EXTRACTS ON LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokinianai DEVELOPMENT AND YIELD OF WHEAT(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) RAHMAN, MD. Leaf blight caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana is a common constraint of limiting wheal production in Bangladesh. Use of plant extracts as a biocontrol agent against plant diseases is a relatively recent approach. Efficacy of plant extracts in controlling leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokinianas of wheat was studied during the cropping season 2006-2007. The experiments were conducted in the Seed Health Laboratory. Department of Plant Pathology and in the farm of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. Initially 33 plant species were evaluated for their efficacy against Bipolaris sorokiniana by an in vitro test. Among them 13 species were found promising and selected for field evaluation against leaf blight disease. A remarkable reduction of the severity of leaf blight was achieved by treating seeds with botanicals. The treatments showed significant effect in respect of leaf blight severity (0-5 scale) for flag leaf and penultimate leaf at flowering, milking and bard dough stages. The lowest severity of flag leaf and penultimate leaf in every stage was found in the treatment T12 (Seed treatment with turmeric rhizome extract) followed by treatment T (Seed treatment with garlic clove extract) whereas the highest disease severity was recorded under the Ill 2 treatment T1 (untreated control). Significantly the highest plant height (93.09 cm) was found in the treatment T2~ ear length (15.58 cm) in treatment Ts (Seed treatment with kalijira seed extract) and the number of spikelets Ices (19.I 1) in treatment T5 (allamanda leaf extract). The number of grains/ear, number of healthy grains/ear, weight of grains/ear and weight of healthy grains/ear were increased by using seeds treated with extracts of kaliji.ra (Ts), garlic (T2). allamanda(T and turmeric (T Seed treatment with plant extracts significantly increased grain yield over untreated control. Among the plant extracts, turmeric rhizome extract 12). treated seeds resulted the highest grain yield (3.60 t/ha) which was 39.44 % higher over untreated control. Thus plant extracts have definite antifungal effect on Bipolaris sorokiniana which could be employed as an ecofriendly approach in controlling leaf blight of wheat.Item EFFICACY OF SELECTED FUNGICIDES IN CONTROLLING SHEATH BLIGliT (Rhizoctonia solani) DISEASE OF RICE(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) KABIR, MD. T8 (Sunvit 50 WP). r, (Cupravit 50 WP) and T10 (Bordeaux mixture) were studied on sheath blight of rice BRRl 40 during Aman season in the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka. The lowest number of sheath blight infected tillers/hill was observed in T (Tilt 250 EC) where the highest number was found in control (T 6 1 ). The highest percentage of relative lesion height (%RLH) was observed in Control (T1) and lowest was found in T6 (Tilt 250 EC) plot. AU the chemicals significantly reduced percentage of sheath area diseased over control except Bordeaux mixture.The highest lesion height/sheath was obtained from the treatment T1 (Control) under field condition and the lowest was found in T (Tilt 250 EC) plot. All the treatments influenced yield contributing parameters of rice. The treatment T6 (Tilt 250 EC) resulted 6.07 t/ha grain yield which was 6 l .86o/o increased over untreated control. Tilt 250 EC is the best fungicide.Item EFFICACY OF SELECTED FUNGICIDES IN CONTROLLING SOME FOLIAR DISEASES OF RICE(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) TULI, FATEH UNItem EFFICACY OF SOME SELECTED TREATMENTS FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF SCAB AND DIE-BACK OF CITRUS(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) SIDDIQUEE, TANVIR ALIA research work was conducted on the standing citrus plant raised at citrus orchard in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from March to September 2007 to investigate the effect of some selected treatments in controlling the scab and die back of citrus. Allarnanda leaf (Allamanda catherticay leaf extract and seven fungicides viz. Dinthane M-45 (0.3%). Rovral 50WP (0.1 %), Bavistin 50 WP (O. l %), Champion 77 WP (0.2%). Cupravit 50WP (0.2%), Tilt 250EC (0.25o/o) and Proud 250EC (0.25%) were tried against Elsinoe fa ... vcettii in controlling scab and dieback of citrus. A marked reduction of disease incidence and severity of scab and die back of citrus was observed after commencement of spraying and reduction of disease, reached to the highest after three month of spraying. The highest reduction of POI (leaf) and POI (fruit) of scab of citrus was recorded in champion 77Vt'P (85.43o/o and 80.12% respectively) at three months after sixth sprays and the highest reduction of PDI (twig) of die back of citrus was recorded in case of Dithane M-45 (58.0 I%). Bavistin 50 WP (T1), Cupravit 50 WP (T2). Dithane M-45 (T3), Proud 250 EC (T4), Ridomil Gold (T5). Tilt 250 EC (T(l). Allamanda leaf extract (T7). Neem leaf extract (T8). Garlic extract (T9), Ginger extract (TIO)~ Onion extract (T11) and Control (T12) were tested against Colletotrichum capsici causing Anthracnose of chilli during winter season (2006-2007) at the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The highest seed germination (80%) was obtained from ginger extract and neem extract treated seeds in laboratory condition while the germination was 78.83o/o and 74.00%, respectively ginger and necm extract in the field condition. The efficacy of the treatments varied significantly in terms of disease incidence, disease severity and yield of chilli. Tilt 250 EC (T6), Proud 250 EC {T4), Cupravit 50 WP (T2) and Allamanda extract (T9) showed promising effect against the disease. Application of Tilt 250 EC increased 195.90% fruit yield of chilli followed by Proud 250 EC ( 177.59%) and Bavistin 50 WP (159.56%) against anthracnose disease of chilli. Cost benefit analysis showed that the application of Tilt 250 EC (T6) resulted the highest BCR (4.07) followed by Proud 250 EC (3.68). Bavistin 50 WP (3.47), Allamanda leaf extract (3.16) and Dithane M- 45 (2.95 ) compared to control.Item MANAGEMENT OF CERCOSPORA LEAF SPOT OF MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata) THROUGH BOTANICALS(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) UDDIN, MD. NASIRThe present experiment was conducted for management of Cercospora leaf spot of mungbean through botanicals. The experiment comprised of 7 treatments such as T 1 = Neem leaves extract (1:4 w/v); T = Garlic cloves extract (1:5 w/v); T 3 = Biskatali leaves extract (1:4 w/v); T 2 = Alamanda leaves extract (1:6 w/v); T 5 = Arjun leaves extract (1:4 w/v); T = Debdaru leaves extract (1:5 w/v) and T 7 4 = Untreated (control). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design. Data on disease incidence, severity, yield contributing characters and yield of mungbean were recorded. The highest (13.42% infected plant) disease incidence was recorded in treatment T and the lowest (3.67% infected plant) disease incidence was recorded in treatment T 7 at 60 DAS and the highest (13.65) disease severity was recorded in treatment T 1 and the lowest (4.55) disease severity was recorded in treatment T 2 and T 7 . The highest (13.45) number of inflorescence per plant was recorded in treatment T 3 . The tallest (51.44 cm) plant was recorded in treatment T 1 1 . The maximum number of bunches (8.56), number of pod per plant (26.81), length of pod (8.56 cm), number of seed per pod (12.64) and 1000 seed weight (27.33 g) was recorded in treatment T . Formaldehyde (To), Furadan SG (T7), Ridomil gold (Tx), Bordeaux mixture (TC»), Soil solarization (TIO) and Control (I'll) were c aluated against Sclerotium rolfs ii. Fusarium spp. Rhizoctonia 0/(111; and Pythium spp. causing damping off of vegetable seedlings (Eggplant, Tomato and Chilli). The efficacy of the treatments varied significantly in terms of increasing germination percentage and reducing percent damping off of vegetable seedlings in comparison to control (Til). Soil application with Ridomil gold cr~d... oil solarization (TIO). Poultry waste (T1) and Formaldehyde (T6) showed the remarkable effect in controlling damping off of vegetable seedlings increasing percent seed germination. Among the different eco friendly treatments, the highest reduction of incidence of seed borne Bipolaris sorokiniana and increasing seed germination and seed yield (3.85 t/ha) was obtained by manually sorted healthy looking seed treated with hot water (T8) followed by farmer's saved seed treated with hot water (T1). Significant reduction of incidence of same fungus was achieved by treating seeds with solar heat and polythene solarization. The rest of the treatments have some remarkable effect in controlling the disease and increasing seed yield of wheat. Dhaka. Bangladesh during the rabi season of 2006-07 to study the management of purple blotch of onion through chemicals and plant extracts. T1 (Bavistin 50 WP). T2 (Tilt 250 EC), T3 (Champion 77 WP), T4 (Cupravit 50 WP), T5 (Bleaching powder, BP), T6 (Bavistin 50 WP+ BP), T7 (Tilt 250 EC+ BP), T8 (Champion 77 WP+ BP), T9 (Cupravit 50 WP + BP), T10 (Ash)~ T11 (Sawdust), T12 (Khudcpana), T13 (Poultry manure) and T14 (Control) were assessed against Rhizoctonia solani for the management of sheath blight of rice (BR 3) during March to August, 2007 at the farm of Shcr-c-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka. Effect of different treatments against sheath blight of rice differed significantly in terms of 0/o Relative Lesion Height (RLI·n, number of infected tiller per hill, lesion size. length of paniclc, number of filled and unfilled grain, grain yield (ton/ha), straw yield (ton/ha) and weight of l 000 grains weight. Among the treatments tested, T 6 AMENDMENT ABSTRACT (Bavistin SO WP + BP) showed the best performance in reducing disease incidence and disease severity as well as increasing yield of rice followed by T7 ( I'ilt 250 EC + BP) and T (Champion 77 WP + BP). The treatment T6 (Bavistin 50 WP + BP) reduced upto 54.09o/o RLH and increased grain yield by 37.34% over control which was followed by Tilt 250 EC + BP (52.12%. 32.62%) and Champion 50 WP+ BP (49. l 0%. 31.94%), respectively. The fungicides alone also showed better performances but the soil amendment alone had no remarkable effect in controlling sheath blight of rice.Item MANAGEMENT OF STEMPHYLIUM BLIGHT OF ONION THROUGH SOME SELECTED TREATMENTS(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) Khatun, MorjinaA study was carried out for the management of stemphylium blight of onion tStemphylium vesicariumy through some selected treatments during the period of December, 2006 to April, 2007 at the farm of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207. The experiment was laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A local onion vanety Taherpuri was used in the experiment. Treatment of onion bulb followed by foliar spraying with eight fungicides VIZ., Score, Tilt-250 EC (Propiconazole), Dithane M-45 (Mancozeb), Champion, Cupravit, Ridomil MZ- 72 (MetalaxyJ + Mancozeb ), RovraJ 50 WP (Iprodione), Bavistin (Carbendazun) and one botanical treatment viz. Neem leaf extract ( l :5) with control were applied m the experiment. Treatment foJlowed by six ( 6) foliar spraying at I 0 days interval starting from 20 days after planting with Rovral (0.2%) or Dithane M-45 (0.45%) minimized disease mcidence & severity and increased seed yield. The least leaf infection by Stemphyltum vesicartum and the highest bulb yield was recorded m the sample from Rovral and Dithane M- 45 treated plot.Item MORPHOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF TUNGRO RESISTANT GENOTYPES OF RICE(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) Rahman, Mohammad MahfuzurGenetic divergence analysis through Principal Component. Principal Coordinate and Canonical Vector analyses were done for tungro resistant and susceptible genotypes using 13 morphological characters. The genotypes were grouped into six clusters according to D2 statistic and Canonical Vector analysis Plant height, days to flowering, days to maturity, panicle length. number of spikelet per panicle number of unfilled grain per panicle and yield were mdicated as important contributiors to genetic divergence in 14 rice genotypes. On the basis of cluster distances, cluster l (BR10, BRRI dhan44) with cluster ill (Sonahidernota, Kumragoir, Nakuchimota) and cluster VI (Bazail Ace 252, bazail Accl7l, Rayeda 4849) or cluster l1 (BRI I, BRRI dhan3 l , BRRI dban32) with cluster Ill were identified for utilization in hybridization programme. A total of six primers including three SSRs and three VNTRs were used to characterize tungro resistant genotypes. PIC values of SSR primers, RM20, RM21 and RM23 ranged from 0 65-0 84 So these primers were considered as very much useful for characterizing tungro resistant genotypes The amplicons size of RM2 l (I 86 bp) was found in tungro susceptible. BR 10 and moderately resistant genotypes while that was absent in highly resistant and susceptible, BRI I genotypes. In Vlx'I'R primer GF, two amplicons {543 bp and 1003 bp) were fixed with susceptible and moderately resistant varieties while those were absent in highly tungro resistant vaneties. Based on Nei's genetic distance, seven clusters were formed among the tungro resistant genotypes Diversity analysis of genotypes using morphological and molecular data indicated that new breeding program could be initiated preferably using the parents. BRRl dhan44 and Kachamota, BRRI dhan32 and Kacharnota, BR l 0 and Kachamota, BRRl dhan3 1 and Kacharnota, BRRI dhan32 and Sonahidernota for the development oftungro resistant varieties.Item POTENTIALITY OF PLANT EXTRACT IN CONTROLLING LEAF BLIGHT (Bipolaris sorokiniana) OF WHEAT(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) ISLAM, MD. ALAULPotentiality of plant extract in controlling leaf blight (Bipolaris sorokiniana) of wheat was carried out during the period from june, 2006 to March, 2007. The experiments were conducted in the Seed Health Laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology and in the farm of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. Primarily 24 plant species were evaluated for their antifungal activity against B. sorokiniana by an invitro test. Among them 13 species were found promising and selected for field evaluation against leaf blight disease. All the plant extracts reduced the incidence of B. sorokiniana over untreated control. The highest reduction was found in case of treating seeds with turmeric rhizome extract. Among the botanicals, durba leaf extract performed the highest percent of healthy seedlings. It has been observed that allamanda leaf extract showed the highest germination and highest vigor index in compare to control. Among the botanicals onion bulb extract treated seeds resulted lowest leaf blight severity in compare to untreated control. Seed treatment with onion bulb extract also showed the best result in producing higher number of spikelets/ear, number of grains/ear, weight of grain/panicle and weight of straw/panicle in compared to untreated control. The mycorrhizal Inoculation suppressed root rot, damping off and leaf spot disease of Spinadl (SpintlCitJ o/eracea L.) and White gourd (Cucurbita vulgaris). The mycorrhiza inoculated plants showed more leaves, branches, early flowering and fruiting in comparison to uninoculated control. Mycorrhizal root colonization differed among the crops ranging from 18.65 to 53.48% and mycorrhizal dependency varied from 18.57 to 36.36%. Increased nutrient (N, P, K, Fe and Zn) uptake was recorded WIth the inoculated plants. Among the inoculated vegetables, comparatively higher N. P and K uptake was observed in Spinach, Water spinadl (KaImishak) and Cucumber where as Zn and Fe uptake was found higher m Spinach and in Cucumber. respectively.Item SCREENING OF F2 POPULATIONS AND MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF UFRA RESISTANT GENOTYPES OF RICE(Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2007-12) TALUKDAR, MD. RABJUL BASARThe experiments were conducted in the experimental field and laboratory of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRR!), Gazipur during 2006-2007. Thirteen F2 lines of rice were tested against ufra. Among the 1 146 plants of F2 population under 13 lines, 406 were found highly resistant, 216 moderately resistant, 157 resistant, 94 moderate susceptible, 61 susceptible and 212 highly susceptible. The highly resistant and resistant plants were selected for crossing program for the development of ufra resistant varieties. Genetic diversity was assessed by analyzing 6 SSR and 3VNTR markers for ufra resistant genotypes. All the markers were found polymorphic. Cluster analysis according to the UPGMA method illustrated the genetic relationships among the 12 ufra resistant and susceptible genotypes. These rice genotypes had been differentiated into three main clusters. To develop ufra resist.ant varieties and broaden the genetic base of nee varieties new breeding program should be initiated preferably using the parents (having greater genetic distances) BRI 1 and Aokazi, BR3 and Aokazi, Rayeda and BRJ, Rayeda and BRI l as they are expected to produce good segregants.
