Item Challenges and opportunities in migrating to web-based information services: a case study of Dhaka university library(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-20) Rayan, ZannatulWorld Wide Web (WWW) and Internet becomes a new media of libraries for information storage and information providing with greater speed and economy. The web technology and Internet has changed the way of information is stored, retrieved and communicated in the libraries. As more libraries move towards providing their services in a digital environment, the improved access to remote library collections is making the use of electronic information resources more realistic and more attractive. This paper discusses about the web-based library services available in Dhaka University Library. This paper focuses on the use of web-based library services by the Dhaka University Library users and examines how DUL provides web access to its collections and user support for that access and the problems faced by the users in accessing web-based library services. Findings show that DUL is yet to exploit full potential of the web forms, and lagging behind in effective use of library website as it has some problems like ICT-infrastructure and manpower. It is also troubled with slow speed internet connection. This paper highlights the current state of web-based library services against which DUL can benchmark its own web-based library services. This paper also has some recommendations for increasing the effective use of web-based library services.Item Ethical Use of Information by Library and Information Professionals of Bangladesh: a study(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-19) Hasan, Md. KamrulThe main objective of the study is to assess the status of ethical use of information of LIS professionals in Bangladesh. In accomplishing this purpose, the study advanced by generating three precise objectives and three research questions (RQs) on the basis of the literature reviewed. It also tested different test; (Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test) to find the answers to the RQs. In conducting this study; survey, quantitative, comparative and exploratory approaches were adopted. A pre-coded questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the sample drawn from the LIS professionals of the selected public and private university, national, central public, school, college and special libraries through personal visit. The collected data were analyzed by applying frequency distribution, descriptive statistical tools while the different opinion of professionals were tested by applying Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test based on the scale of measurement. The major findings of the study were the perceptions of the LIS professionals from the selected libraries about the importance and application of copyright act, importance of IFLA code of Ethics for LIS professionals, Censorship, use of internet in libraries, photocopying service and library rules. The study has the potentiality for implementation in the practical field to introduce and/or transform the conventional and unorganized concept of copyright, censorship and different code of ethics practices for ethical use of information by professionals. The major limitations of the study are the selection of the libraries situated only in Dhaka city, excluding the library users from the population. Therefore the study suggested future research by selecting libraries from different part of the country, including the user category in the population.Item The use of smartphone in accessing information: A case of Dhaka university students(University of Dhaka, 2015-04-16) Hossain, Md. EmranThis Study aims to present an overview of the use of smartphone in accessing information by the students of Dhaka University. It helps to locate the possible advantages and relative drawbacks regarding the use of smartphone in accessing information from internet. The survey method with a structured questionnaire has been employed to conduct the research. The data was collected from different faculty & institute for the balance of the study and findings. The data was collected from both graduate and undergraduate. All the questionnaires were duly coded after editing for computer input. Questionnaire was analyzed using statistical software SPSS program version 11.5, and MS word, MS Excel. Mann- Whitney (M-W) and Kruskal-Wallis (K-W) tests were conducted to further analyze the influence of students’ demographic and individual characteristics on their opinions on possible academic uses of smartphone. The result of the study shows that the status of smartphone usage by the students of Dhaka University is satisfactory. The findings of the study indicate that the students of Dhaka University provide their consensus regarding the use of smartphone in accessing information from internet. Tangila BinteLibrary anxiety is manifested in the form of negative feelings, fear, stress, distress, confusion and has debilitating effects on students’ academic performance. This research explores library anxiety amongst Dhaka university students and identifies factors that contribute to this phenomenon. The factors are identified using the questionnaire approach collected from 350 undergraduate and postgraduate students at Dhaka University. The factors which may lead to library anxiety comprise of negative perceptions towards academic library environment, negative perceptions towards library staff, affective barriers, negative perceptions towards peers, negative perceptions towards library services, negative perceptions towards library collections, negative perceptions towards library regulations, and cognitive barriers. The individual difference underlying library anxiety is described.Item Status of digital libraries in medical university and college in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-05-15) Kolly, Hosna AraIn this digital era of information explosion any library cannot meet the each and every demand of their patrons because of various constraints. The aim of the study was to explore the status of digital library initiatives in medical university and college libraries of Bangladesh. To meet this aim, the study analyzed the collection, staff, ICT, automation, e-resources and digitization status in medical university and college libraries of the country; explored the libraries readiness to carry out digitization activities; the researcher analyzed the prevailing digitization practices, projects, identified the major issues and hindrances affecting library digitization practices and suggested recommended activities to improve the medical college libraries poor condition and also suggests a Medical College Taskforce on Building Digital Library. Keeping in view the purpose and objective of the study the study used the mixed method research design by using qualitative and quantitative techniques. For the demand of the study the researcher use the survey research by using interviews and semi structured questionnaire techniques for data collection. In order to collect the necessary information for research work, the researcher visit to the 27 number of interviewees from 23rd September to 22 nd October. The study has been discussed under six chapters which consists of background of the study with basic description of digital library, literatures tat reviewed, methodology that adopted to successfully complete the research, status of ICT, automation, e-resources and digitization in Bangladesh, data analysis and finding, problems faced by medical libraries, recommending suggestions and summery of the study. The findings of the study revealed a very shocking library condition in medical university and college of Bangladesh. The study found that, very few libraries just take automation plans; even few libraries do not have any computers and librarian. Except BSMMU, no medical college library is members of any e-resource consortium. They have so many problems that impede the development of libraries, such as efficient staff, fund, e-resources, technologies, integrated library software, no digitization plan or initiatives etc. The findings of this study will be useful to library planners at all levels in establishing more concrete collaborative plans for national digital library system in medical colleges. To remove the darkness the Government of Bangladesh along with medical university and colleges should take initiatives to develop “Digital Library” nationwide.
