    An examination of library anxiety among students at Dhaka University

    Library anxiety is manifested in the form of negative feelings, fear, stress, distress, confusion and has debilitating effects on students’ academic performance. This research explores library anxiety amongst Dhaka university students and identifies factors that contribute to this phenomenon. The factors are identified using the questionnaire approach collected from 350 undergraduate and postgraduate students at Dhaka University. The factors which may lead to library anxiety comprise of negative perceptions towards academic library environment, negative perceptions towards library staff, affective barriers, negative perceptions towards peers, negative perceptions towards library services, negative perceptions towards library collections, negative perceptions towards library regulations, and cognitive barriers. The individual difference underlying library anxiety is described.

    Challenges and opportunities in migrating to web-based information services: a case study of Dhaka university library

    World Wide Web (WWW) and Internet becomes a new media of libraries for information storage and information providing with greater speed and economy. The web technology and Internet has changed the way of information is stored, retrieved and communicated in the libraries. As more libraries move towards providing their services in a digital environment, the improved access to remote library collections is making the use of electronic information resources more realistic and more attractive. This paper discusses about the web-based library services available in Dhaka University Library. This paper focuses on the use of web-based library services by the Dhaka University Library users and examines how DUL provides web access to its collections and user support for that access and the problems faced by the users in accessing web-based library services. Findings show that DUL is yet to exploit full potential of the web forms, and lagging behind in effective use of library website as it has some problems like ICT-infrastructure and manpower. It is also troubled with slow speed internet connection. This paper highlights the current state of web-based library services against which DUL can benchmark its own web-based library services. This paper also has some recommendations for increasing the effective use of web-based library services.

    Ethical Use of Information by Library and Information Professionals of Bangladesh: a study

    The main objective of the study is to assess the status of ethical use of information of LIS professionals in Bangladesh. In accomplishing this purpose, the study advanced by generating three precise objectives and three research questions (RQs) on the basis of the literature reviewed. It also tested different test; (Kruskal Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test) to find the answers to the RQs. In conducting this study; survey, quantitative, comparative and exploratory approaches were adopted. A pre-coded questionnaire was used to collect primary data from the sample drawn from the LIS professionals of the selected public and private university, national, central public, school, college and special libraries through personal visit. The collected data were analyzed by applying frequency distribution, descriptive statistical tools while the different opinion of professionals were tested by applying Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test based on the scale of measurement. The major findings of the study were the perceptions of the LIS professionals from the selected libraries about the importance and application of copyright act, importance of IFLA code of Ethics for LIS professionals, Censorship, use of internet in libraries, photocopying service and library rules. The study has the potentiality for implementation in the practical field to introduce and/or transform the conventional and unorganized concept of copyright, censorship and different code of ethics practices for ethical use of information by professionals. The major limitations of the study are the selection of the libraries situated only in Dhaka city, excluding the library users from the population. Therefore the study suggested future research by selecting libraries from different part of the country, including the user category in the population.

    Information literacy (IL) initiatives in Bangladesh: a case study

    The aim of this study is to understand the dynamics of the initiatives and measures undertaken by organizations/institutions of Bangladesh for introducing Information Literacy (IL) and all the issues surrounding IL programs given that there are so many challenges and so many milestones to accomplish. The study reveals the importance of Information Literacy in a country like Bangladesh that is struggling towards development in an information era. The study includes various definitions of IL from different people who mastered the concept of IL. It includes the origin, necessity and scope of Information Literacy. A very important branch of this study is a Case Study on Dhaka Ahsania Mission’s initiatives, programs, and continual activities to introducing IL and their efforts to carry on spreading awareness and establishing the building blocks for IL education as far as they can reach within their capacity and limitations. Face to face interviews were one of the methodologies that were used and conducted to obtain more information regarding IL. The study incorporates the challenges that act as an impediment in the way of achieving Information Literacy in Bangladesh taking into consideration all the limitations both in personal and organizational levels. Included are also recommendations to overcome these hurdles or obstacles through effective approaches and measures. The findings of this study summarize the need/essentiality of Information Literacy in Bangladesh for the country to be able to cope up with the ever growing scope of Information.

    Interoperability among university libraries in Bangladesh: Data exchange feasibility

    Libraries have been cooperating and collaborating on collection building and resource sharing for many years. The cooperation was based on inter-library loan and preparation and publication of union catalogue. In Bangladesh, the ways of cooperation in building resources and access to information resources was not easy and effective in manual way. Since last decade, due to rapid emergence of ICTs in Library field, ways of library resource building and resource sharing have become more easier and efficient than manual way. In the digital era, the term “Interoperability” has become main focusing issue in the field of library resource sharing or information exchange. But questions have been arisen when libraries started to computerize their bibliographic information using different platforms. When the libraries using different platforms, i.e.- Integrated Library System, Single Alone Software, simple Script Language, etc., try to interoperate among themselves, data exchange feasibility becomes main issue. There are many International Standards in developing Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) followed by different libraries in Bangladesh which create major barriers in building interoperability because of inconsistency among themselves. This study was carried out to identify the data exchange feasibility among the university libraries, to show how the inconsistency among different platforms can be removed and thus how university libraries can join in a uniform platform. In the study those university libraries were selected as sample which are in front position in applying ICTs in their work settings. These selected libraries represents most of the automated university libraries in Bangladesh. A questionnaire was developed based on the present ICTs trends in university libraries. This questionnaire judges the capability of the libraries to be interoperable through Z39.50/SRW protocol. This protocol was in main concern when developing the interoperability model. In the study, 7 libraries were found that can create MARC format records. These libraries can directly host bibliographic records into Z39.50 Server. The rest libraries cannot produce MARC format records, but follow MARC fields in catalogue data entry. To convert the bibliographic records of these university libraries into MARC format, MARCedit tool was used. After converting into MARC format, these records can be hosted in Z39.50 Server. Thus, we can achieve our desirable interoperability among most of the automated university libraries in Bangladesh.
