Item GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF LISIANTHUS (Eustoma grandiflorum) WITH NITROGEN DOSES AND PLANT SPACING(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) HUSNA, MST. ASMAULA field experiment was accomplished at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2018 to April 2019 to study the effect of nitrogen doses and spacing on growth and flowering of Lisianthus (variety-SAU Blue Nandini). Nitrogen doses viz. N 1 II =225 kgha (BARI recommended for marigold), N 2 = 250 kgha -1 , N 3 = 275 kgha -1 -1 and Spacing viz. S 1 (30 cm x 15 cm), S 2 (30 cm x 20 cm), S 3 (30 cm x 25 cm) were used in this experiment arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data on different growth, flower yield and quality attributes parameters were taken in which all the treatment showed significant variations. Among nitrogen doses, maximum stem number per plant (5.8), peduncle length (13.4 cm), flower head diameter (6.2 cm), flower number per plant (42.6), petal number per flower (19.8) were found from N 3 whereas minimum in N 1 . Among different spacing, maximum stem number per plant (6.5), stem length (58.4 cm), flower head diameter (6.0 cm), flower per plant (42.3) found in wider spacing S 3 whereas minimum found in S 1 . Maximum flower number per plant (55.3) were found in N 3 S 3 and minimum flower number per plant (14.6) were found in N 1 . The study showed that the higher nitrogen doses with wider spacing would be the potential for Lisianthus production.Item EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SOURCES OF PHOSPHORUS AND MULCH MATERIALS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF FRENCH BEAN(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) ISLAM, RAKIBULThe experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka -1207, during the period from November 2019 to February 2020 to study the effect of different sources of phosphorus and mulch materials on growth and yield of french bean. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: different sources of phosphorus as P 1 = 100% TSP (control), P 2 = 50% TSP + 50% Vemicompost, P 3 = 50% TSP + 50% Mushroom spent compost, P 4 = 50% Vemicompost + 50% Mushroom spent compost and Factor B: different type of mulch materials as M 1 = No mulch (control), M 2 = White polythene mulch, M 3 = Black polythene mulch. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. In case of different sources of phosphorus of french bean the maximum number of flower (29.06), the highest number of pod harvested per plant (24.00) and the highest yield (14.35 t/ha) were found from P 4 treatment, whereas the lowest from P 1 treatment. For different mulch materials the highest number of flower (29.37), the maximum number of pod per plant (24.21) and the highest yield (14.33 t/ha) were recorded from M 2 treatment, while the minimum were from M 0 treatment. Due to combined effect, the maximum number of flower (30.72), the maximum number of pod harvested per plant (26.83), the highest yield (16.76 t/ha) were observed from P 4 II M 2 treatment combination, while the lowest were from P 1 M 0 treatment combination. The highest net return (2,74,100 Tk./ha) was obtained from P 4 M 2 and the lowest (1,42,286 Tk./ha) in P 3 treatment combination. The highest (2.19) benefit cost ratio was obtained from P 4 treatment combination, while the lowest (1.63) in P 3 M 1 treatment combination. So, the P 4 M 2 treatment combination appeared to be the best for achieving the higher growth and yield of french bean.Item INFLUENCE OF THIOUREA CONCENTRATIONS AND APPLICATION FREQUENCY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF LIGHT PINK LISIANTHUS(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) MALIHA, MAISHAAn experiment was accomplished in the Horticulture farm Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2018- May 2019 to study the influence of thiourea concentrations and application frequency on growth and yield of light pink lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum). Thiourea concentrations viz., C 1 : 500 ppm, C 2 :1000 ppm, C 3 :1500 ppm and application frequency, T 0 : Control: No thiourea application, T 1 II : single application, T 2 : twice application were used in this experiment arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data on growth, physiology, yield and quality attributes parameters were taken in which all the treatments showed significant variations. Among thiourea concentrations, maximum plant height (59.6 cm), stem number/plant (4.4), flower/plant (26.6), maximum chlorophyll content (56.6), flower head diameter (6.3 cm), yield/plot (793.2) were recorded from C 3 and for application frequency, the longest Stem (47.3 cm), peduncle length (12.7 cm), maximum stem diameter (4.3 mm), flower per plot (898.3) in twice application (T 2 ). Furthermore maximum flower yield per plant (37.3) and yield per plot (1116.7) were found in C 3 T 2 and minimum yield per plant (10.3), yield per plot (309.7) in C 0 T 0 . In view of overall observations, twice application of thiourea at 1500 ppm concentrations had showed the best result and would be the potential for increasing the lisianthus flower production.Item GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF CHINESE CABBAGE AS INFLUENCED BY VERMICOMPOST(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) ISLAM, NISHATAn experiment was conducted in the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2019 to February 2020 to study the influence of vermicompost on growth, yield, and quality of Chinese cabbage. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: Three cultivars viz; C : BARI Chinakopi 1, C 2 : Blues and C : Retasi; Factor B: Vermicompost (4 levels); VC 0 : Control (no vermicompost), VC xv 3 1 : 6 t/ha, VC 2 : 8 t/ha and VC : 10 t/ha. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were 12 treatment combinations. In the case of cultivars, Blues gave the highest marketable yield (66.38 t/ha) and BARI Chinakopi 1 gave the lowest (43.55 t/ha). For vermicompost levels, VC gave the highest (71.25 t/ha) marketable yield and the lowest (36.14 t/ha) from VC 3 . For interaction effect, cultivar Blues treated with vermicompost (10t/ha) (C 2 VC 3 0 ) gave the highest (83.55 t/ha) marketable yield and the lowest (30 t/ ha) from C 1 VC . The highest values were recorded for VitC (27.50 mg/100g), Beta carotene (156.83 ug/100g), Ca (72.16 mg/100g), Mg (11.23 mg/100g), P (27 mg/100g), K (237.16 mg/100g), Fe (0.87 mg/100g) and Zn (0.21 mg/100g) were recorded from cultivar Blues (C 0 2 3 ). For vermicompost levels, VC gave the maximum amount of Vit-C (28.88 mg/100g), Beta carotene (189.33 ug/100g), Ca (72.66 mg/100g), Mg (11.79 mg/100g), P (26 mg/100g), K (230 mg/100g), Fe (0.63 mg/100g) and Zn (0.21 mg/100g). For interaction effect, cultivar Blues treated with 10t/ha vermicompost (C 2 VC ) gave the highest amount of Vit-C (32 mg/100g), Beta carotene (195 ug/100g),), Ca (74.66 mg/100g), Mg (12.24 mg/100g), P (28 mg/100g), K (249.66 mg/100g), Fe (0.95 mg/100g) and Zn (0.23 mg/100g). The experiment consisted with two factors. Factor A: Four types of organic nutrient sources such as ON 0 -Control 4 1 -Cow dung -Kitchen compost 3 -Vermicompost Peperone Yolo Wonder , C 2 -F1 Hybrid Sweet Pepper -BARI Mistimorich2. Besides, variety C 2 produced the highest yield produced the lowest 3 C 2 3 produced the highest produced the lowest 0 C 3 0 2 3 1Item EFFECT OF POSTHARVEST MANAGEMENT ON SHELF LIFE AND QUALITY OF GUAVA(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) ISLAM, NAHIDULThe experiment was carried out in the Postharvest Laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of January 2019 to June 2019 to find out the effect of different postharvest management practices of guava to increase shelf life and quality in ambient condition. Two factor experiment viz. Factor A: P 0 (no packaging) and P viii 1 (perforated polythene) and Factor B: T (no preservatives), T 1 (Propolis 5%), T 2 (Chitosan 1%), T 3 (Gum Arabic 5%), T (Propolis 5% + Gum arabic 5%), T 5 (Propolis 5% + Chitosan 1%), T (Cinnamon oil 2%), T 7 (Lemongrass oil 2%) and T (Cinnamon oil 2% + Lemongrass oil 2%) were initiated for the experiment. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Various data on physical and chemical properties were collected. In case of the effect of packaging material, P 1 8 (perforated polythene) showed best performance and showed the highest shelf life (9.78 days) compared to P (no packaging) (7.89 days). Regarding preservatives, T 1 0 (Propolis 5%) gave the best results on studied parameters and showed highest shelf life (12 days) compared to other treatments and shortest shelf life was recorded from T (5.5 days). In case of combined effect of packaging materials and preservatives, at 12 days after storage (DAS), the lowest percent weight loss (6.46%) and percent dry matter content (14.63%) were found from P 1 T 1 0 whereas the highest weight loss (10.23%) and dry matter content (21.08%) was found in P 0 T . Similarly, the highest percent moisture content (85.37%), percent titratable acidity (2.23%), vitamin C content (196.60 mg/100g), percent total soluble solid (7.76%), firmness (4.30 kg/cm 2 0 ) and percent total sugar content (9.17%) were also found from the treatment combination of P 1 T 1 at 12 DAS whereas P showed the lowest results (78.92%, 0.701%, 144.4mg/100g, 5.16%, 2.10 kg/cm , 5.361%, respectively) on the respected parameters. Likewise, the highest shelf life (13.00 days) was also recorded from P 1 T whereas the lowest (5.00 days) was from P 0 T 0 . So, the treatment combination of P 1 1 T can be considered the best postharvest treatment for guava.Item MITIGATION OF SALT STRESS BY FOLIAR APPLICATION OF SALICYLIC ACID ON TOMATO PLANT(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) MD. SAHABUDDINA pot experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh from October, 2018 to March, 2019 to determine the mitigation of salt stress (NaCl 0, 6, 9, 12 and 15 dSm ) through salicylic acid (SA: 0, 100 and 200 ppm) in BARI Tomato- 15. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. SA alleviate salt stress on growth and metabolic activities of tomato plants. The data which were collected during the experiment are plant height, number of leaves, number of branches per plant, leaf area, days required for transplanting to 1 flowering, SPAD value, dry matter of plant, dry matter of fruit, number of flower cluster per plant, number of flowers per cluster, number of flowers per plant, number of fruit per plant, length of fruit, diameter of the fruit, weight of individual fruit, yield per plant etc. The results revealed that, salt treatment induced drastic reduction in growth characteristics of tomato plant through decreasing the plant height, number of leaves, number of branches per plant, leaf area, days required for transplanting to 1 flowering, SPAD value, dry matter of plant, dry matter of fruit, number of flower cluster per plant, number of flowers per cluster, number of flowers per plant, number of fruit per plant, length of fruit, diameter of the fruit, weight of individual fruit, yield per plant etc. In the majority of cases with the application of 100 ppm of SA caused partial decrease in the deleterious effects of salinity in all parameters of this study. The highest yield (1411.0 g plant -1 ) was recorded from the application of 100 ppm of SA while the lowest yield (687.00 g plant -1 ) was found from 0 ppm of SA under saline condition. From this experiment, under saline and non-saline condition 100 ppm of SA gave the best result for all the growth and yield parameters.Item HYDROPONIC ROCKMELON CULTURE AS INFLUENCED BYDIFFERENT STRENGTH OF NUTRIENT SOLUTION(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) YASMIN, SABINACrop specific nutrient solution is important for higher yield in hydroponic system. Therefore the experiment was conducted at the Hydroponic Farm of the Horticulture farm is Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to identify suitable strength of nutrient solution to get higher yield in Bangladesh. Two factors were used as treatments in this experiment viz, variety and nutrient solution. Three varieties, viz. V 1 = Action-434, V ii 2 = Madhurima, V 3 = F -Hybrid and three nutrient solutions viz. S 1 1 =Full strength Rahman and Inden (2012) nutrient solution, S = 3/4 strength Rahman and Inden (2012) nutrient solution, S = Full strength of Hoagland and Arnon (1940) nutrient solution were used in this experiment .The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with three replications. Different strength of nutrient solution and different variety of rockmelon showed significant variation in most of the parameters studied. The highest plant height (7.68, 25.60, 37.78, and 54.11 cm) the maximum number of leaves/plant (9.16, 23.91, 31.10 and 50.12), the maximum number of shoots per plant (4.51, 3.56 and4.39), the maximum number of fruit/plant (4.99), individual fruit weight (1537gm), fruit length (14.78), fruit diameter (52.88cm) and yield per plant (2.48 kg) were found the highest in S 2 3 . And also all the parameters were found the highest in V 2 . But all the parameters were drastically reduced when S treatment was applied and also reduced V 1 1 . For combined effects, all the parameters were found the highest in V 2 S 2. Meanwhile all the parameters were reduced V 1 S 1 . Therefore, S nutrient solution can be used for rockmelon cv. Madhurima (V ) in soilless system in Bangladesh.Item EFFECT OF VERMICOMPOST AND GIBBERELLIN ON BITTER GOURD PRODUCTION IN THE WATER SURFACE OF FISH POND(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) MODAK, SOURAVA field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of vermicompost and gibberellin on bitter gourd production in the water surface of fish pond during March to June 2019 at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The experiment was considered of two factors. Factor A: vermicompost (3 levels) viz. (i) 90% coco peat + 10% broken bricks (V ), (ii) 30% vermicompost + 60% coco peat/pot + 10% broken bricks (V 1 viii 0 ) and (iii) 60% vermicompost + 30% coco peat/pot + 10% broken bricks (V (Control) (G 0 ) and (ii) 40 ppm GA 2 ) and Factor B: GA 3 (G 1 3 (2 levels) viz. (i) 0 ppm GA ). It was laid out in the two factors completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Regarding vermicompost, V showed higher growth and yield and resulted highest fruit yield (21.58 t ha ) compared to control (11.97 t ha -1 ). In terms of GA application, the highest fruit yield (19.35 t ha -1 ) was found from G 1 (40 ppm GA 3 3 ) whereas the lowest (14.62 t ha ) was from control treatment G 0 (0 ppm GA 3 ). Considering interaction effect, V showed highest fruit weight pot -1 (1783 g) and fruit yield (24.76 t ha ) whereas the lowest fruit weight pot -1 (945.60 g) and fruit yield (10.80 t ha -1 -1 2 ) were obtained from V . It can be concluded that vermicompost with GA3 application was effective for better gourd cultivation in floating agriculture.Item GROWTH AND YIELD OF CABBAGE AS INFLUENCED BY GA 3 AND MULCHING(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) NILA, DILARA ISLAMTo study growth and yield of cabbage as influenced by GA and mulching a fieldstudy was carried out at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from October 2018to March 2019. Cabbage seeds of Atlas 70 were used as planting materials. Theexperiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: three mulching materials viz. M 3 = Control, M 1 = Polythene mulch and M 2 = Straw mulch and Factor B: Four levels GA application viz. G 0 = Control (0 ppm GA 3 ), G 1 = 80 ppm GA 3 , G 2 = 100 ppm GA andG 3 = 120 ppm GA . The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete BlockDesign (RCBD) with three replications. Results revealed that the mulching treatment M 1 3 (polythene mulch) showed promising results on growth and yield parameters and it was the treatment compared to others which showed the highest marketablecabbage yield (43.03 t ha -1 ) whereas the lowest (40.26 t ha -1 ) was from M (control condition). Among the GA 3 treatment, G 2 (100 ppm GA ) gave the best performancefor most of the studied parameters and showed highest marketable yield ha 3 (46.23 t ha -1 ) whereas the lowest (35.82 t ha -1 ) was from control treatment G ).Different treatment combination of mulching and GA also showed significant 3 0 0 -1 3 (0 ppm GA 0 3 3influence on different growth and yield parameters of cabbage. The highest gross yield (55.76 t ha -1 ) and marketable yield (47.43 t ha -1 3 ) were recorded from the treatment combination of M 1 G 2 0 0 -1 3 (0 ppm GA whereas the lowest (40.49 and 34.63 t ha , respectively) were found from M 0 G . Regarding economic analysis, the highest Benefit cost ratio (BCR) (3.37) was also recorded from M 0 1 G whereas the lowest BCR (2.38) was obtained from the treatment combination of M 2 0 G . From growth, yield and also economic point of view, it is apparent that the combination of M 0 1 G 2 0 .Item INFLUENCE OF POTASSIUM AND BORON ON QUALITY AND YIELD OF TOMATO(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) Baten, Kazi AbdulThe field experiment was therefore conducted to investigate the influence of potassium and boron on the quality and yield of tomato at the Horticulture farm of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the rabi season (October 2019 to March 2020). The experiment consisted of two factors, Factor A: four different levels of potassium (K O) viz., 0, 80, 120, 140 kg/ha, Factor B: four different levels of boron (B) viz., 0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 kg/ha. The experiment was comprised of 16 treatment combinations and laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The influence of different levels of potassium, boron and their combined effect showed significant variations in quality and yield of tomato. Plant grown with 120 kg /ha K 2 O gave the highest result in number of leaves per plant (40.52), number of flower clusters per plant (8.32), number of flowers per cluster (6.59), number of fruits per cluster (4.54) , number of mature fruits per plant (37.93), weight of fruits per plant (0.95 kg), weight of fruits per plot (5.68 kg), yield per hectare (63.19 ton/ha) as well as quality parameter total soluble solids % (7.84), β -Carotene mg per 100g (0.36) and Vitamin-C mg per 100g (112.6). Among the different levels of boron maximum results were obtained from 1.2 kg B/h in all yield and quality parameters except plant height. In combine treatments the maximum plant height (119.2 cm), number of leaves per plant (42.92), number of flower clusters per plant (8.93), number of flowers per cluster (7.44), number of fruits per cluster (4.79), weight of fruits per plant (1.07 kg) were produced from the treatment combination of 120 kg K/ha with 1.2 kg B/ha. The highest fruit yields per plot (6.42 kg), per hectare (71.33 t) as well as quality were achieved from the treatment combination of 120 kg K 2 2 O/ha with 1.2 kg B/ha. So, optimum use of potassium with the combination of micro nutrient boron could influence quality and yield of tomato significantly.Item GROWTH AND YIELD OF BROCCOLI AS INFLUENCED BY VERMICOMPOST AND GA3(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) AHAD, MD. MAINUL ISLAMA field experiment was accomplished in the Horticulture farm of Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October 2018 to March 2019 to study on influence of Vermicompost and GA3 on growth and yield of broccoli. The experiment comprised of three levels of vermicompost viz., V0 (Control)), V1 (5 t/ha), V2 (10 t/ha) and four levels of GA3 viz., M0 (control), M1 (50 ppm), M2 (80 ppm) and M3 (110 ppm) were used in this experiment arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth and yield attributes were taken in which all the treatments showed significant variation. The maximum yield (27.29 t/ha) was recorded from V2 (10 t/ha), while the lowest (19.79 t/ha) was recorded from V0. GA3 exhibited a significant influence on total yield per plant. The maximum yield (26.27 t/ha) was recorded from M2 (80 ppm), whereas the lowest (19.80 t/ha) was recorded from M0. Yield per plant was significantly influenced by the treatment combinations of vermicompost and GA3 of broccoli. The maximum yield (32.41 t/ha) was recorded from the treatment combination of V2M2, whereas the lowest (18.19 t/ha) was recorded from V0M0. From growth and yield point of view, it is apparent that the combination of 10t/ha vermicompost with 80 ppm GA 3 is suitable for broccoli cultivation.Item OKRA PRODUCTION IN THE FISH POND THROUGH THE APPLICATION OF GIBBERELLIC ACID AND VERMICOMPOST(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) RASHID, MD. (i) Yo; 0% vermicompost + 90% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water (control), (ii) VI; 20% vermicompost +70% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water and (iii) V2; 40%vermicompost + 50% coco peat + 10% broken bricks + dissolved nutrients of fish pond water. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). In terms of GA3 application, the highest fruit yield (405.66"g plant") was found from GI whereas the lowest fruit yield (336.03 g plant") was found from Go. Regarding vermicompost, V2 showed higher growth and yield attributes which resulted the highest fruit yield (421.00 g plant") whereas the lowest fruit yield (303.80 g plant") was found from Yo. Considering interaction effect, GJV2 showed highest fruit yield (470.10 g plant") whereas the lowest fruit yield (290.60 g plant") was found from GoVo. So, the treatment combination of GIV2 can be treated as the best among all the treatment combinations.Item INFLUENCE OF SULPHUR AND BORON ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF GARDEN PEA (Pisum sativum L.)(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) DAS, SHOVAN KRISHNAAn experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October, 2018 to March, 2019 to study the influence of sulphur and boron on growth and yield of garden pea. The experiment comprised of two factors. Factor A: Levels of Sulphur (4 levels); S 0: 0 kg S/ha (Control), S 1: 10 kg S/ha, S 2: 20 kg S/ha, S 3: 30 kg S/ha and Factor B: Levels of Boron (4 levels); B 0: 0 kg B/ha (Control), B 1: 1 kg B/ha, B 2: 2 kg B/ha, B 3: 3 kg B/ha. This experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Blocked Design (RCBD) with three replications. Sulphur and Boron application influenced significantly on most of the parameters. In case of sulphur, maximum plant height (50.84 cm), number of pods per plant (14.00), pod length (8.95 cm), number of seeds per pod (5.56) and green pod yield (10.76 t/ha) were recorded from S 3 treatment. In case of boron application, maximum plant height (49.17 cm), number of pods per plant (13.48), pod length (8.66 cm), number of seeds per pod (5.41) and green pod yield (10.14 t/ha) were found in B 2 treatment. Among the treatment combination, S 3 B 2 treatment gave the highest green pod yield (12.19 t/ha) and the lowest (5.38 t/ha) was obtained from S 0 B 0 treatment. The highest gross return (Tk. 365700), net return (Tk. 217585) and BCR (2.46) were obtained from the treatment combination of S 3 ii B 2 where the lowest gross return (Tk. 161400), net return (Tk.17647) and lowest BCR (1.12) were obtained from S 0 B 0 . So, garden pea sown at 30 kg S/ha with 2 kg B/ha suitable for green pea production in Dhaka region.Item EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PRESERVATIVES ON SHELF LIFE AND QUALITY OF GERBERA AND GLADIOLUS(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) ALAM, MD. JAHANGIRAn examination was carried out in the Postharvest Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, SAU during the period of January to February, 2019 to study the effects of different preservatives on increase shelf life of gerbera and gladiolus. For this experiment, spikes of gerbera and gladiolus were kept in T II 0 (Tap water), T (0.4 ppm 1MCP + 4% sucrose), T 2 (50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T (100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T 4 3 (0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T (0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T ( 50 ppm AgNO3 + 50 ppm citric acid + 0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T 6 (100 ppm AgNO3 + 100 ppm citric acid + 0.4 ppm 1-MCP) + 100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose) and T (1L Warm water + ¼ tea spoon household bleach + 10 ml citric acid + ½ spoon sugar). The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design. T 8 solution gave the best result in respect of water uptake, vase life and other parameters. The highest vase life of gerbera and gladiolus was 15.8 days and 14.8 days respectively in T 6 solution whereas it was 8.0 days and 7.0 days in control. Treatment with T solution gave shelf life 14.6 days and 13.6 days for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. Conventional solution T showed 12.8 days and 12.2 days for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. The highest solution uptake of gerbera and gladiolus was 62 ml and 113.4 ml respectively in T 6 8 solution whereas it was 20 ml and 50 ml in control. Treatment with T solution uptake 58.4 ml and 102.20 ml for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. Conventional solution T 7 8 uptake 47 ml and 96.40 ml for gerbera and gladiolus. As T solution (1L Warm water + ¼ tea spoon household bleach + 10 ml citric acid + ½ spoon sugar) gives better performance, so it can be a suitable substitute of chemical preservatives in Bangladesh aspect.Item GROWTH AND YIELD OF FRENCH BEAN AS INFLUENCED BY THREE VARIETIES AND NUTRIENTS(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) AKTER, MOUSUMIThe experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: different varieties as V 1 = BARI French bean-1, V = BARI French bean-2, V 3 = BARI French bean-3 and Factor B: different level of nutrients as N II 2 = cowdung (5t/ha) + vermicompost (2t/ha), N 2 = cowdung(5t/ha) + N 90 P 30 K = cowdung (5t/ha) + vermicompost (2t/ha) + N 90 P 30 K kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. In case of different varieties of French bean the maximum number of flower (27.83), the highest number of pod harvested per plant (22.14) and the highest yield (15.95 t/ha) were found from V 2 treatment, whereas the lowest from V 45 treatment. For different level of nutrients the highest number of flower (25.58), the maximum number of pod per plant (22.60) and the highest yield (14.10 t/ha) were recorded from N 3 treatment, while the minimum were from N 1 2 treatment. Due to combined effect, the maximum number of flower (32.02), the maximum number of pod harvested per plant (26.50), the highest yield (18.92 t/ha) were observed from V 2 N treatment combination, while the lowest were from V 2 N 1 treatment combination. So, the V 2 2 N treatment combination appeared to be the best for achieving the higher growth and yield of French bean.Item EFFECTS OF COLOR SHADE NETS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF CAPSICUM(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) SUMONA, SUMMY AKTERAn experiment was conducted in the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from October 2019 to April 2020, to find out the effects of color shade nets on growth, yield and quality of capsicum. The experiment consisted with two factors. Factor A: Three types of color shade nets such as C - White color shade net (control), G N - Green color shade net (25%) and B - Black color shade net (40%). Factor B: Three varieties such as R - F1 Hybrid Sweet Pepper (Lalima), G - Peperone Yolo Wonder and Y - BARI Mistimorich 2. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results revealed that in terms of yield and yield contributing parameters, G 1 (318 g) and fruit yield (34.52 t/ha) where the lowest yield plant N N N R gave the highest yield plant -1 (121 g) and fruit yield (13.13 t/ha) was recorded from the treatment B G. In terms of quality parameters, the highest (10.23%) total soluble solids (TSS) was obtained from C N R and the lowest (3.80 %) total soluble solids (TSS) was obtained from B N N G. The highest vitamin C content (164.50 mg . 100g -1 ) was obtained from C N G where the lowest (146.63 mg ) was obtained from B Y. The highest antioxidant activity (81.16%) and anthocyanin concentration (10.47 mg/100gFw) was obtained G N R whereas the lowest antioxidant activity (71.75 %) and anthocyanin concentration (4.23 mg/100gFw) was obtained from B N N G. From economic point of view the highest BCR (4.25) was obtained from G R and lowest BCR (1.04) was obtained from B N G. Green shade net (G ) with F1 Hybrid Sweet Pepper (R) gave the best performance among all the treatment combinations.Item FFECT OF GAMMA IRRADIATION AND PACKAGING ON QUALITY AND SHELF LIFE OF MANGO(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) SHAON, MD. ATIQUR RAHMANMango is a highly perishable fruit that has a short shelf life. The irradiation technology plays an important role in controlling the food spoilage by microorganism, and also enhances the shelf life. The irradiation treatment was carried out at Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Ganakbari, Savar, Dhaka, while the parameters were studied at Postharvest Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, Sher-eBangla Agricultural University. Mango fruits were treated with gamma irradiation of different doses i.e. Ra 0 : 0.00kGy, Ra 1 : 0.30kGy, Ra 2 : 0.50kGy, Ra 3 : 0.70kGy, Ra 4 : 1.00kGy; and stored in two postharvest packaging i.e., nonpackaging (P 0 ) and packaging (P 1 ) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Results revealed that 0.70kGy irradiated fruits reduced percentage of weight loss, disease severity, delay ripening, prevented moisture loss (%) and maintained better quality in terms of titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), p H , ascorbic acid content, β-carotene content, and prolonged shelf life compared to other gamma irradiation treatment. Perforated LDPE bag (P 1 ) also increase the shelf life of mango and maintain better quality as irradiation. Therefore, 0.70kGy irradiated fruit stored in perforated LDPE polybag can be considered the most effective treatment in maintaining better quality and extending the shelf life of mangoes.Item EFFECT OF GROWING MEDIA AND WATERING FREQUENCIES ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF CARROT(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, 2020) AKTER, SARMINA pot experiment was conducted at the central farm of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during December 2018 to March, 2019. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of growing media and watering frequencies on the growth, yield and quality attributes of carrot. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: four growing media, viz., M 1 -cocopeat, M 2 - sawdust, M 3 - rice husk, M 4 - equal mixture of cocopeat, sawdust and rice husk and Factor B: different watering frequencies viz., W 1 - one day interval @ 200 ml, W 2 - two days interval @ 300 ml, W 3 - three days interval @ 400 ml, W 4 - four days interval @ 500 ml. There were 16 (4×4) treatments combination. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The experimental results showed maximum parameters were significantly influenced by different growing media and watering level. For growing media, the highest plant height (47.17 cm) at 100 DAS, number of leaves (12.31) at 100 DAS, length of root (12.25 cm), root diameter (20.25 mm), fresh weight of root (54.85 g), dry matter content of leaves (17.79 %), brix (10.57 %), β- carotene (9098.1 μg/100g) and moisture (86.01%) was obtained from M 1 and the lowest from M 4 . For watering level, the maximum plant height (53.92 cm) at 100 DAS, number of leaves (12.98), at 100 DAS, length of root (12.06 cm), root diameter (21.50 mm), fresh weight of root (55.83 g), brix (10.20%), β- carotene (9347.9 μg/100g) and moisture (86.59%) was recorded from W 2 and the lowest from W3. For combined effect, the maximum plant height (56.51 cm) at 100 DAS, number of leaves (13.46) at 100 DAS, length of root (13.52 cm), root diameter (23.81 mm), fresh weight of root (67.42 g), brix (11.20%), β- carotene (9884.4 μg/100g) and moisture (87.11%) was obtained from M 1 W 2 and the minimum from M 4 W 3 . So it might be concluded that the M 1 W 2 was found the best performed for high growth, yield and quality of carrot.
