    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF TOMATO

    A pot experiment was conducted inside the net house at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur during the period of November 2024 to February 2025, to study the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on growth and yield of tomato. The experiment was laid out in a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) having seven treatments with three replications: T1: N0P0, T2: N1P1, T3: N1P2, T4: N2P1, T5: N2P2, T6: N3P1, T7: N3P2 .Different doses of N (0, 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 g pot-1) and P(0, 0.20, 0.25 g pot-1) were applied in soil based on 0, 80, 100, 120 kg ha-1 and 0, 45, 50 kg ha-1 respectively in soil. Nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization to the soil influenced the plant growth and yield contributing characters of tomato. The highest value of different parameters such as plant height (The maximum plant height 66.33, 91.67, 106.00 and 118.00 cm was observed in T7 treatment at 30 , 45 ,60 DAT and at harvest respectively), number of leaf plant-1 (14.33, 17.00, 19.33 was observed in T7 at 30, 45 and 60 DAT respectively), number of branches (5.99 and 6.67 was observed in T7 treatment at 45 and 60 DAT respectively), number of flowers plant-1 ( 33.00, 46.00 was observed in T7 at 45 and 60 DAT respectively), no of fruit plant-1 (43.33 was observed in T7 ), weight of fruit (2.10 kg plant-1 was observed in T7 treatment), root length (24.40 cm was observed in T7 ), fresh root weight (14.27 g plant-1 was observed in T7), dry weight of root (4.33 g plant-1 was observed in T7), fresh and dry weight of shoot (305.73 g plant 1 and 16.36 g plant-1) both were observed in T7 treatment. The lowest values of all the parameter of growth and yield contributing characters were found in control T1 treatment. Although highest amount of nutrient in the fruit like Ca, Mg and K (133.00, 88.00 and 106.87 mg/1000gm) fruit were observed in T2 treatment and lowest amount of nutrient in the fruit were observed in T7 treatment. It is showed that the performance of the treatment T7 was the best among all the other treatment. Therefore, the study reveals that the soil application of 120 kg N ha-1 and 50 kg P ha-1 might be an efficient practice for achieving economical tomato production but increasing amount N and P application reduced chemical content (Ca, Mg, K) of tomato fruit.

    ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY AND SUITABILITY FOR IRRIGATION PURPOSES AT NAGESHWARI UPAZILA

    A study was conducted to evaluate the quality of groundwater in different unions of Nageshwari upazila under Kurigram District of Bangladesh for irrigation purposes. Forty water samples were collected and analyzed in the Agricultural chemistry laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University for the assessment of their quality based on a number of pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Kelly‟s ratio (KR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), total cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+) and anions (HCO3-, SO4 2, PO4 3- and Cl-). Several computed variables such as SAR (Sodium Adsorption Ratio), HT (Total Hardness), PI (Permeability Index), PS (Potential Salinity) and Kelly‟s Ratio were used to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for specific uses. Most of the water samples were slightly acidic in nature (pH value varied from 5.88 to 7.15 for ground water) and had a great impact on crop production. As regards to EC values, 21 samples were classed as „good‟ and 12 samples were classed as „excellent‟ and 7 samples were „permissible‟ categories for irrigation. All samples were fresh for irrigation in respect to TDS. Based on SAR values, all water samples were under „excellent‟ categories for irrigation. On the basis of Ca2+, Mg2+,Na+ and K+ content, the entire water samples can safely be used for irrigation and would not affect the soil +. On the basis of PO4 3, SO4 2-, HCO3- and Cl-, all water samples under investigation were suitable for irrigation. For hardness, 7 samples were soft, 28 samples were moderately hard and 5 sample were hard for irrigation. Some compositional relations were also evaluated. The results also provided data for water quality of groundwater resources of study region to match national and international standards for agricultural requirements. The study revealed that the quality of groundwater for most of the locations in the area was permissible, good and suitable for irrigation purposes.

    EFFECTS OF UREA AND COW DUNG ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF STEVIA (Stevia rebaudiana Bertone.)

    The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI), Regional Sugar crop Research Station, Thakurgaon, Bangladesh experimental farm during March 2023 to September 2023 to study the effect of nitrogen and cowdung on growth, yield and quality of stevia. The trail was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Factor A: (urea) N1: control, N2:100 kg ha-1, N3: 125 kg ha-1, N4:150 kg ha-1. Factor B: (cowdung) C1: control, C2: 5 t ha-1, C3: 7.5 t ha-1and C4: 10 t ha-1. The layout of the experiment was prepared for distributing the treatment combinations in each plot of each block. The unit plot size was 2m×2m. Row to row distance 40 cm, plot to plot distance 50 cm and plant to plant distance 40cm. Data were collected on plant height (cm), number of branch plant-1, number of leaves plant-1, proline content, fresh leaf yield ha-1 (kg), dry leaf yield ha-1 (kg), of stevia. Significant variations were observed on plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of branch plant-1in different level of urea application. Significant the highest plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of branch plant-1was observed in N3 (urea125 kg ha 1 ) treatment and the lowest was observed in N1 (control) treatment at 30 DAT to 150 DAT, respectively. Cowdung was the significant effect in increasing height in C4 (10 t ha-1) at 30 DAT to 150 DAT, respectively and the lowest plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of branch plant-1was observed in control (cowdung) treatment. The highest plant height, number of leaves plant-1, number of branch plant-1 heights was found in N3C4 (urea 125 kg ha 1× cowdung 10 t ha-1) treatment and the lowest was found in N1H1 (with no urea application × with no cowdung application) at all growth stages. Significantly fresh leaf yield ha-1, dry leaf yield ha-1 were observed in N3 treatment and lowest was observed in N1 treatment in stevia production. Significantly fresh leaf yield ha-1, dry leaf yield ha-1 were observed in C4 treatment and lowest was observed in C1 treatment in stevia production. The interaction effect of urea and cowdung in most of the combination should significantly the highest fresh leaf yield ha-1 and dry leaf yield ha-1 was observed in N3C4 treatment and lowest was observed in N1C1 treatment. Thus, the application of urea and cowdung had positive impact on leaf yield components resulted in higher yield of study. On the basis of above result it can be concluded that combine application of urea 125 kg ha-1 and cowdung 10 t ha-1 is might be suitable for stevia production in Bangladesh.

    COMPARISON OF FOOD NUTRIENTS AND BIOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THREE PINEAPPLE CULTIVARS AVAILABLE IN MADHUPUR

    Pineapple is considered as heavenly of fruits due to its high food values, glorious style, and unique flavor. An exploration laboratory experiment was conducted during July to December, 2023 on three pineapple cultivars to examine their chemical properties. Three pineapples such as cv. honey queen, cv. giant kew and cv. MD-2 were used as experimental materials. The study was conducted to evaluate pineapple cultivars for food quality attributes like shape and size, pH, vitamin C, vitamin A, titrable acidity, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars, total carbohydrate, beta carotene, ash, moisture, fat, fiber, protein, Ca, P, Zn and Fe content. The pineapple cv. MD-2 had the best fiber content (0.17%), protein content (1.21%), vitamin C (47.07 mg/100 g), vitamin A (0.11 mg/100 g), beta carotene (0.07 mg/100 g), non reducing sugar (7.91%), Zn content (0.08 mg/100 g) and Fe content (0.51 mg/100 g) and had the lowest reducing sugar content (0.65%) and P content (3.87 mg/100 g). Pineapple cv. honey queen had highest total sugar (13.45%), Ca content (65.59 mg/100 g) and P content (7.05 mg/100 g) as well as lowest non reducing sugar (3.16%), fiber content (0.06%), vitamin C content (12.12 mg/100 g) and vitamin A content (0.09 mg/100 g). Pineapple cv. giant kew had highest percent of ash content (0.53%) as well as had lowest protein content (0.68%), total sugar (5.53%), Ca content (28.11 mg/100 g) and P content (0.29 mg/100 g). The highest total phenol (8.05 mg/100 g) and ferric reducing power (49.24 mg/100 g) were found in pineapple cv. MD-2. The lowest total phenol was found in pineapple cv. honey queen (6.10 mg/100 g) and cv. giant kew (6.91 mg/100 g) was in intermediate between cv. MD-2 and cv. honey queen. Pineapple cv. giant kew had the lowest total phenol (30.60 mg/100 g) content. On the basis of physical analysis, the highest ratio of edible part and peel of three pineapple cultivars was found in cv. MD-2 (2.01) and the lowest was found in cv. giant kew (1.76). Among three cultivars, mature cv. MD-2 was better having higher nutrients compared to cv. honey queen and cv. giant kew. Thus, pineapple cv. MD-2 can serve as a good source of nutrients for edible and processing. The present finding informs the comparative nutrient status and food values of three pineapple cultivars which might help to selection for consumption and processing in food industries.

    INVESTIGATION OF NUTRITIONAL AND CHEMICAL QUALITY OF MUSKMELON JUICE MIXED WITH VARIOUS SPICES

    The experiment to assess the physicochemical properties and mineral composition of muskmelon juice was conducted by the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University Dinajpur, between June and September 2023. Fresh muskmelon was cleaned with clean water, dried on tissue paper, peel off, cut, blended and mixed 15ml pulp + 85ml water with different five treatments, finally stored in refrigerated bottles for future use. Data was collected on moisture, pH, acidity, ash, protein, fat, vit-C, β-Carotene, vit-A, total sugar, carbohydrate, energy, Ca, Mg, Na, K, and sensory attributes. Biochemical composition changed significantly between treatments. High moisture, pH (98.34%, 6.89), acidity (0.18%), lowest ash (0.02%), lowest protein (0.04 g/100 mL), lowest fat and vit-C (1.37 mg/100 mL), lowest β-Carotene (0.05 mg/100 mL), lowest vit-A (0.02 mg/100 mL), lowest total, reducing, and non-reducing sugar (0.51%, 0.11, and 0.4%), lowest carbohydrate and energy (1.32%, 6.67 kcal/ml, respectively). On the other hand, the lowest moisture content and pH (86.65% and 5.93), lowest acidity (0.03%), highest ash content (0.17%) which as statistically similar with T2 (0.15%), highest protein content at 0.21 g/100 mL which was statistically similar with T2 (0.19 g/100 mL), highest fat and vit-C content (0.58% and 8.75 mg/100 mL), highest β-Carotene content (0.18 mg/100 mL) which was statistically similar with T2 (0.17 mg/100 mL), highest vit-A content (0.30 mg/100 mL) which was statistically similar with T2 (0.28 mg/100 mL), highest total and non-reducing sugar content (20.36%, 19.78%, respectively), highest carbohydrate content was observed in sample T1 with 13.02%, which was statistically similar with T2 (11.98%), highest energy (53.48 kcal/ml), highest calcium (Ca) content (6.01 mg/100 mL) which was statistically similar with T2 (5.93 mg/100 mL), highest magnesium content was observed in sample T1 (7.19 mg/100 mL), highest sodium content at 2.50 mg/100 mL, which was statistically similar with T2 (2.40 mg/100 mL), highest potassium content with 27.13 mg/100 mL was found in sample T1 while highest reducing sugar content was found in sample T2 (0.67%), which was statistically similar with T1 (0.58%). T2 scored 9 on colour, flavour, taste, and texture, suggesting it was ―liked extremely‖ whereas Samples T1 and T3 scored 8. The lowest grade was 4 (―disliked slightly‖) for control sample (TC). Based on the findings, T2 therapy was the best spice mix for nutrients, minerals, and social acceptance.

    ASSESSMENT OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND MINERAL CONSTITUENTS OF BANANA GROWN IN DINAJPUR

    Banana is one of the most popular desert fruits, which is available throught the year. In terms of per capita consumption, its rate is higher than any other fruits in Bangladesh. The study was conducted to determine the nutritional constituents of selected varieties of banana such as Sabri (desi), Sabri (hybrid), Amritsagar, Chini Champa, Modhua and many local varieties available in the Dinajpur district. Each value represents the average of five replications. The physico-chemical properties studied included moisture, titrable acidity, total soluble solids, fiber and ash with the value ranges of 69.78-79.65%, 0.32-0.48%, 13.36- 19.08%, 15.20 21.76 ºBrix, 0.45%-0.95%, 0.25%-0.94% respectively. The maximum moisture (79.65%) and ash (0.94%) was found in Amritsagar. Modhua had a maximum total soluble solids (23.76 ºBrix).Chini Champa contain maximum fiber (0.95%) The bio-chemical properties of different varieties of banana showed protein, total sugar, fat, β-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C with a value of 1.35-3.12%, 13.36-19.08%, 0.04-0.11%, 0.023-0.093mg/100gm, 3.29-5.55mg/100gm and 3.19-4.88mg/100g respectively. Sabri (desi) had a higher value of the total sugar (19.08%). Sabri (hybrid) contained the highest amount of protein (3.12%) and Chini Champa contained a higher amount of fat (0.11%). The β-carotene (0.093mg/100gm) and vitamin A 5.55mg/100gm content were excellent in Amritsagar. The vitamin C (4.88 mg/100g) was higher amount in Sabri (desi). The mineral nutrients were studied included calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium with the range of 10.00 20.04mg/100g, 30.33-32.42mg/100g, 12.11-21.78mg/100g and 69.04-53.39mg/100g respectively. The calcium (20.04 mg/100g) and phosphorus (21.78 mg/100g) were found higher amount in Sabri (desi). The maximum potassium (69.04mg/100g) found in Amritsagar and Modhua contained higher amount of magnesium (32.42mg/100g). The overall assessment of the experiment, Sabri (desi) and Sabri (hybrid) contained nearly similar amount most of the nutrients. Sabri (hybrid) contained highest amount of protein (3.12%) and most of the important nutrients such as Vit C, Ca, Mg, fiber etc. found in good amounts which are beneficial for healthy dietary persons and its yield was higher than other selected variety. On the perspective of farming income and healthy dietary persons, Sabri (hybrid) can be recommended for cultivation in farmer level.

    COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT, NUTRITIONAL, AND PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF FIVE POPULAR MANGO (Mangifera indica) VARIETIES FROM THE NORTHERN REGION OF BANGLADESH

    This study assesses the antioxidant, nutritional, and physicochemical properties of five distinct mango varieties Amrupali, BARI-4, Haribhanga Dinajpur, Haribhanga Rangpur, and Mollika at ripe stages. Conducted at the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, from May to June 2023, the research reveals significant variations among the mango cultivars. Mollika exhibited the highest moisture content (81.98%), suggesting exceptional juiciness but a shorter shelf life, while Haribhanga (R) presented a firmer texture and longer storage potential due to lower moisture levels (72.83%). Haribhanga (R) also showed the highest Total Soluble Solids (24.00°Brix), indicating remarkable sweetness, contrasted by Mollika’s milder flavor (TSS 15.50°Brix). Mollika's higher acidity (pH 3.57) provides a tangy taste, while Haribhanga (R) exhibited milder acidity (pH 5.86). Nutritional analysis revealed Haribhanga (R) with the highest protein content (1.56%), Amrupali with the highest fat content (0.12%), and Haribhanga (R) and Mollika with the highest fiber content (0.99% and 0.92%, respectively). Haribhanga (D) showed the highest total sugar (28.7%) and starch content (25.85%), with Haribhanga (R) and Haribhanga (D) having the highest calcium (35.07 mg/100g) and magnesium (36.46 mg/100g) content, respectively. Amrupali was noted for its high levels of β-Carotene (42.977 mg/100g), Vitamin A (71.633 mg/100g), and Vitamin C (35.04 mg/100g), enhancing antioxidant richness, while BARI-4 had the highest Total Phenol content (10.45 mg/100g). These comprehensive insights into the mango varieties’ quality, nutritional value, and potential food industry applications underscore their versatility and significance in Bangladesh's agricultural sector and the global market. The study aims to inform consumers, guide agricultural practices, and enhance mango-based product development, ensuring the continued prominence of mangoes in the food industry.

    FOLIAR APPLICATION OF GA3 ON CHLOROPHYLL CONTENT, EFFECTIVE TILLERING AND YIELD OF BRRI dhan34

    Plant growth regulators play vital roles in coordination of many growth and behavioral processes in rice. A field experiment was carried out to explore the growth and flag leaf chlorophyll and grain yield of BRRI dhan34 under different levels of gibberellic acid (GA3). The experimental materials comprising five concentrations of GA3 (0,50, 75, 100 and 125 ppm) spraying thrice on early vegetative, vegetative and harvesting stages. The parameter was plant height, leaf number, tiller numbers, node numbers, internode length, leaf length, panicle length, effective tiller, filled grain no., unfilled grain, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoid. There was a significant effect among different level of GA3 on maximum studied characters. The highest plant height was observed by rice plant spraying 125 ppm GA3 at early vegetative (90 cm), vegetative (133 cm) and harvesting stages (204.68 cm) ,respectively. The minimum plant was 54.8, 70, 82.9 cm at control of the stages. The maximum leaf number 3.6, 5.33 and 5.73 was found in treatment 75 ppm, 50 ppm and 100 ppm GA3, respectively on thrice stages. The minimum leaf number was in control at all thrice stages. The maximum tiller numbers hill-1 which was recorded as 18.66, 15.4 and 17.82 were found with the treatment of 125 ppm. The minimum tiller numbers were at control. At various growth stages, the highest leaf blade length 65.80 cm @ 100 ppm, 78.19 cm was found @ 75 ppm and 98.46 cm at 100 ppm, respectively. The maximum node number and internode length @125 ppm GA3 was 2.1, 4.2, 5 and 4.95 cm, 16.63 cm, 21.25 cm, respectively on all stages. The minimum node number and internode length 2.63, 3.2, 4.1and 4.28 cm, 9.48 cm, 12.48 cm were at control. There was a significant effect of different level of GA3 on the Chlorophyll-a content of leaf of rice cv BRRI dhan34. No significant relationship was found in chlorophyll-b and carotenoid in BRRI dhan34 and the levels of GA3. Different level of GA3 shoewd a significant variation on the effective tiller, non effective tiller, filled grain, unfilled grain, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index of rice cultivar. The highest panicle length (28.37 cm), effective tiller hill-1 (20.34), filled grain panicle-1 (206.93) and 1000 grain weight (10.99) was found in treatment 125 ppm GA3 .The highest grain yield (3.41 t ha-1), straw yield (4.28 t ha-1), biological yield (7.69 t ha-1) harvest index (44.37 %) was found in treatment 125 ppm GA3. It was reported that 125 ppm GA3 was performed superior to yield parameter. It is inferred that 125 ppm GA3 may be applied thrice for maximizing yield in BRRI dhan34 for farmers level.

    STUDIES OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND FOOD NUTRIENTS OF SELECTED SEVEN FINE RICE VARIETIES

    In order to include aromatic rice in the human diet, it is critical to have knowledge about its nutritional content and health benefits. This study examined the nutritional quality features of seven aromatic rice accessions produced in Bangladesh, including proximate composition and mineral concentrations. The accessions studied were Chinigura, Badshabogh, Raduni Pagol, Katari Bogh, Kalijira, BRRI dhan50 and BRRI dhan34. The proximate composition result showed that though the Kalizira local variety showed the highest value for moisture content (13.05%), protein (9.81%) and potassium (245.10 mg/100 g) content while contain lowest fiber, carbohydrate and Sulphur content. BRRI Dhan34 recorded the highest ash (1.55%), fat (0.75%), sodium (239.23 mg/100 g), and phosphorous content (110.64 mg/100 g), while it had the lowest value for the calcium, starch, and sulphur content. The Badshabogh recorded the highest amount of carbohydrate (86.17%), amylose (25.42 mg/100 g), and Magnesium content (951.55 mg/100 g) but had minimum ash, protein, and fat content. BRRI dhan50 had the highest amylose, iron (116.44 mg/100 g), but low in Magnesium content. Radunipagol had the highest fiber (3.96%), starch (28.77%), and calcium (1192.48 mg/100 g), content but lower in ash and sodium content. Chinigura had the top sulphur content (2235.45 mg/100 g). Katari Bogh variety showed the average performance among the studied traits. The nutritional attributes examined in this study were comparable to well-known aromatic rice varieties, indicating their nutritional acceptability. This finding indicated that we could classify these rice varieties as export-quality rice, possessing distinct nutritional qualities that make them desirable for both farmers and consumers in the domestic as well as international market. Among the tested varieties, Randhuni Pagal exhibited the highest content of fiber, starch, calcium, and zinc. BRRI Dhan 34 demonstrated superior levels of ash, fat, sodium, and potassium. Both BRRI Dhan 50 and Bandshavog showed commendable amylose and iron content. In addition to carbohydrates, Bandshavog was noted for its optimal magnesium content. Kalijira stood out for its excellent moisture, protein, and potassium levels. Lastly, Chinigura was distinguished by having the highest sulphur content.

    ASSESSMENT OF WATER QUALITY IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF RANGPUR CITY FOR DRINKING PURPOSE

    Groundwater is one of the most readily available natural resources for industrial and drinking purposes and it functions as a universal solvent. Water samples were collected from different locations of Sadar upazila of Rangpur district of Bangladesh and analyzed for quality assessment. Twenty samples were collected from groundwater sources of 20 schools around the upazila. Analyses included pH, Electrical conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+) and anions (HCO3-, SO4 2-, PO4 3- and Cl-). Several computed variables such as Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Soluble Sodium Percentage (SSP), Hardness (HT), Potential salinity (PS), Gibbs ration (cation & anion), Kelly’s ratio and Permeability index (PI) were studied to evaluate the quality of water for drinking purpose. Almost all the water samples were acidic in nature (pH value varied from 5.92 to 7.08 with average 6.45). According to EC values almost all the collected water samples were categorized as “good” for drinking and all the samples were fresh on the basis of TDS (average was 176). Based on SAR values, all samples were classed as “excellent” in quality (average 1.25) and the best sample is found in Rangpur govt. college according to EC (1185) and TDS (440) value. For hardness all the samples were moderately hard (average was 37.21) and the best sample is found in Lalkhuthi Girls High School In respect of SSP, all the water samples were classed as “suitable” (average 23.39). The best sample is found in Rangpur Govt. College according to SAR (3.14) and SSP (48.59). On the basis of Ca, Mg content of all water samples can safely be used for drinking. The best sample is found in Lalkhuthi Girls High School and the range is Ca (9.80 mg L-1) and Mg (13.50) and on the basis of Na and K the best sample is found in Rangpur Govt. College range is (6.00 and 0.90), respectively. All the water samples may be consumed safely based on their levels of HCO3-, SO4 2-, PO4 3- and Cl-. Some correlations and compositional relations were also evaluated. According to Gibbs ratio (Cation and Anion) and Permeability Index (PI) the best sample is found in Rangpur Govt. College and the values of the sample is 0.69, 0.82 and 49.23 respectively. Seven of the twenty school samples were found to be the excellent sources for drinking water based on the observed results the sample of Rangpur Govt. College performed better in comparison to other tested samples. So, it can be concluded that the tested groundwater of Rangpur city can be used for drinking purpose.
