    EFFECT OF FOLIAR APPLICATION OF GIBBERELLIC ACID ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL CHARACTERS AND YIELD OF OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus L.)

    The experiment was carried out in the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from March to August 2018 to study the effect of foliar application of gibberellic acid on morpho-physiological characters and yield of okra. The experiment considered of two factors. Factor A – two okra variety; V 1 = BARI dheros-1 and V 2 = Lal teer hybrid dheros and Factor B: Gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) - 4 levels; G 0 = Control (0 ppm GA 3 ), G 1 = 50 ppm GA 3 , G 2 = 100 ppm GA 3 = 150 ppm GA 3 and G 4 = 200 ppm GA 3 . The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth, yield components and yield of okra were recorded. Different growth and yield parameters were significantly influenced by variety and GA 3 and also with their combinations. Results showed that the variety V 2 (Lal teer hybrid dheros) gave highest yield and yield contributing parameters compared to V 1 (BARI dheros-1). Again, regarding, GA 3 effect, the treatment G 2 (100 ppm GA 3 ) it gave the best performance on yield and yield contributing parameters. Considering treatment combination of variety and GA 3 , the highest SPAD value (68.35 at 50 DAS), length of fruit (11.70 and 14.90 cm at 60 and 90 DAS, respectively), diameter of fruit (1.86 and 1.92 cm at 60 and 90 DAS, respectively), number of fruits plant (24.60), fresh weight of fruits plant -1 (348.20 g), fruit yield plot -1 -1 (6.26 kg) and fruit yield ha (17.88 t) was obtained from the treatment combination of V 2 G 2 whereas the lowest SPAD value (40.65 at 50 DAS ), length of fruit (6.67 and 8.87 cm at 60 and 90 DAS, respectively), diameter of fruit (1.34 and 1.42 cm at 60 DAS and 90 DAS, respectively) number of fruits plant -1 (24.60), fresh weight of fruits plant (198.70 g), fruit yield plot -1 (3.47 kg) and fruit yield ha -1 (9.92 t) were observed from the treatment combination of V 1 G O. These results suggested that gibbrellic acid increased the yield of okra. -1 , G 3 -1

    EFFECT OF POTASSIUM IN MITIGATING ADVERSE EFFECT OF SALT STRESS ON GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND YIELD OF RICE PLANT (Oryza sativa L.)

    A pot experiment was conducted at the net house of the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during Boro rice cropping season of the year of 2017-18 to observe the effect of potassium in mitigating adverse effect of salt stress on growth, development and yield of rice plant (Oryza sativa L.). The experiment was conducted using two salinity levels with potassium viz. S 0 = Control, S 1 = 4dSm -1 salt, S 1 K 1 = 4dSm -1 salt + 80 ppm potassium, S 1 K 2 = 4dSm -1 salt + 160 ppm potassium, S 2 = 6 dSm -1 , S 2 K 1 = 6 dSm + 80 ppm potassium, S 2 K 2 = 6 dSm -1 + 160 ppm potassium. The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having one factor with three replications. The results and the effect on morphological characters indicated that all parameter were influenced by salinity and potassium. Among 3 salinity level (0, 4 & 6 dSm -1 ), the damaging effect was found more in higher stress (6 dSm ).But potassium supplementation along with salt greatly reduced the damaging effect of salt. Out of the 2 levels of potassium 160 ppm potassium significantly reduced the damaging effect of salt. Therefore, for cultivation of BRRI dhan67 under saline condition 160 ppm potassium application could be a better practice for getting higher yield. -1 -1

    APPLICATION OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS AND MICRONUTRIENTS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF TOMATO

    The growth, yield and quality of tomato largely depend on soil and climatic conditions and also on BARI Tomato 14. Among these, proper application of plant growth regulators and B plays a vital role.A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka, Bangladesh during October 2017 to April 2018 to evaluate the effect of foliar application of IBA, GA and B on yield and quality of tomato. Single variety BARI Tomato-14, and foliar application of IBA 5ppm, GA 3 5ppm and B 2mg/L were used to conduct this experiment. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having single factor and replicated three times. Data were collected on plant height, number of leaves plant -1 3 , number of branches plant -1 , Leaf Area Index(LAI), chlorophyll content of leaf, number flowers cluster pant -1 , number of fruit plant , weight of fruit, yield hectare -1 , Vitamin-C content and TSS% content. A statistically significant variation was recorded in terms of all the characters related to growth and yield quality of tomato. The maximum plant height, number of branches plant -1 , length of branch respectively 103.03 cm at 90 DAT, 65.70 at 90 DAT, 13.11 at 90 DAT was observed in treatment of T 7 (IBA 5ppm+GA 5ppm+B). The minimum plant height, number of branches plant -1 3 , length of branch respectively 82.22 cm at 90 DAT, 47.88 at 90 DAT, 10.33 at 90 DAT was observed in treatment of T 1 at 90 DAT in treatment both T 7 0 -1 (control). The maximum number flowers cluster plant (IBA 5ppm+GA 3 5ppm+B) and T 4 (IBA 5ppm+GA 5ppm) and number of fruit plant -1 160 at 90 DAT was observed by treatment of T (IBA 5ppm+GA 3 5ppm+B). The minimum number flowers cluster plant -1 8.89 at 90 DAT in treatment both T 0 (control) and number of fruit plant -1 60.00 at 90 DAT was observed by treatment of T 0 (control). The maximum yield of fruits hectare -1 (83.30 tones) was obtained from treatment of T 7 (IBA 5ppm+GA 3 5ppm+B). The lowest yield of fruits hectare (33.75 tones) was obtained from treatment of T 0 (B). 3 -1 7 -

    EXOGENOUS APPLICATION OF SALICYLIC ACID ON MITIGATION OF DROUGHT STRESS OF BRRI DHAN28

    The experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2017 to May, 2018 to know the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid on mitigation of drought stress of BRRI dhan28. the experiment consist of two factors with different levels of treatments viz A: T 0 = 0.0 µMm −2 SA, T 1 = 250 µMm −2 SA, T 2 = 500 µMm −2 SA, T 3 = SA, T 4 = 1000 µMm −2 SA. B: different level of drought stress, S 0 = control (normal irrigation), S 1 = moderate drought stress (water withheld from flowering stage to season end), S 2 = Sever drought stress (water withheld from panicle initiation stage to season end). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Significant variation was recorded for data on growth, yield and yield contributing parameters. The maximum values for plant height, number of leaves hill -1 , number of tillers hill -1 , dry weight hill , leaf area index, relative water content (%), leaf membrane stability index, flag leaf chlorophyll content (µMm −2 ), thousand seed weight, number of filled grains panicle , 1000 grain weight (g), grain yield, and straw yield, biological yield, harvest index were obtained from foliar application of SA @ 750 µMm −2 ). Significant influence was remarked in terms of all parameter with different level of drought stress of BRRI dhan28. Results showed that the highest plant height, number of leaves hill -1 750 µMm -1 -1 , number of tillers hill , root dry weight plant -1 , dry weight plant -1 , leaf area index, relative water content, leaf membrane stability index, flag leaf chlorophyll content, number of filled grains panicle -1 was also obtained from normal irrigation without drought stress. The maximum grain yield was obtained from normal irrigation. The treatment normal irrigation produced the highest straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. Interaction effect of salicylic acid and different level of drought stress was significantly influenced for all parameter measured. The maximum grain yield (12.02 g hill -1 ) was with foliar application of SA @ 750µMm −2 with normal irrigation. BRRI dhan 28 planted with drought stress at panicle initiation stage (severe drought stress) would be mitigated by the application of SA @ 750µMm −2 . −2 -1

    EFFECT OF GIBBERELLIC ACID ON MORPHOLOGY, VEGETATIVE GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF FENUGREEK (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.)

    ABSTRACT The study was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) farm, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the rabi season from November 2017 to March 2018 to investigate the effect of gibberellic acid on morphology, vegetative growth and seed yield of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.). The treatment consisted of seven levels of GA 3 including control viz. T 1 = 0 ppm GA 3 (Tap water spray), T 2 = 25 ppm GA 3 , T 3 = 50 ppm GA 3 = 75 ppm GA 3 , T 5 = 100 ppm GA 3 , T 6 = 125 ppm GA 3 and T 7 , T 4 = 150 ppm GA 3 . The experiment was laid out in a randomized completely block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on different growth, morphological, yield and yield contributing characters of fenugreek. Results revealed that the treatment T 4 (75 ppm GA 3 ) gave the maximum plant height (84.48 cm) and number of leaves plant -1 (132.4) at harvest, and the highest chlorophyll content (57.99 and 59.58 at 60 and 75 DAS, respectively) and highest absorbance reading by spectrophotometer at 645 ɳm (0.197 and 0.184 at 60 and 75 DAS, respectively) and at 663 ɳm (0.235 and 0.222 at 60 and 75 DAS, respectively). This treatment also showed highest total chlorophyll content at 45 and 60 DAS (1.488 and 1.067 μg g -1 , respectively). The highest productivity (13.32 kg/ha/days), number of primary branches plant (6.73), number of pods plant -1 (54.20), number of seeds pod -1 (14.87), number of seeds plant -1 (805.90), seed weight plant -1 (5.11 g), 1000 seed weight (10.47 g), pod length (7.46 cm), seed yield ha -1 (1582.00 kg), stover yield ha -1 (3230.00 kg), biological yield ha -1 (4878.00 kg) and harvest index (32.42%) were also found from the treatment, T 4 (75 ppm GA 3 ) compared to control. -1

    EFFECT OF HUMIC ACID AND SALICYLIC ACID ON MORPHOLOGY AND YIELD OF MUSTARD

    The experiment was conducted during the period of October 2017 to February 2018 in the Research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-eBangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 to find out the effect of humic acid and salicylic acid on morphology and yield of mustard. BARI Sarisha 15 was used as planting material in this experiment. The experiment comprised of two factors- Factor A: Levels of humic acid (HA): 4 levels - i) HA 0 : 0 kg/ha (control), ii) HA 1 : 8.0 kg/ha, iii) HA 2 : 16.0 kg/ha, iv) HA 3 : 24.0 kg/ha and Factors B: Levels of salicylic acid (SA): 4 levels - i) SA 0 : 0 mM SA (control), ii) SA 1 : 0.2 mM SA, iii) SA 2 : 0.4 mM SA, iii) SA 3 : 0.6 mM SA. The two factors experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded on different morphological characters, yield contributing parameters and yield of mustard and significant variation was observed for different treatments. For humic acid, at 30, 40, 50, days after sowing (DAS) and at harvest, the tallest plant (63.35, 85.31, 97.21 and 103.99 cm, respectively) was recorded from HA 3 , whereas the shortest plant (57.77, 75.02, 86.91 and 94.83 cm, respectively) from HA 0 . The highest number of siliqua (48.26) was recorded from HA 3 , whereas the lowest number (40.21) from HA 0 . The highest seed yield (1.89 t/ha) was recorded from HA 3 , whereas the lowest (1.34 t/ha) from HA 0 . In case of levels of salicylic acid, at 30, 40, 50 DAS and at harvest, the tallest plant (64.22, 89.09, 101.43 and 108.24 cm, respectively) was recorded from SA 3 , while the shortest plant (55.91, 71.20, 80.88 and 89.54 cm, respectively) from SA 0 . The highest number of siliqua (47.36) was recorded from SA 3 , while the lowest number (40.11) from SA 0 . The highest seed yield (1.79 t/ha) was recorded from SA 3 , while the lowest (1.36 t/ha) from SA 0 . Due to the interaction effect of different levels of humic acid and salicylic acid, at 30, 40, 50 DAS and at harvest, the tallest plant (69.77, 96.82, 111.49 and 114.98 cm, respectively) was found from HA 3 SA 3 and the shortest plant (52.11, 62.00, 72.91 and 83.78 cm, respectively) from HA 0 SA 0 . The highest number of siliqua (52.07) was found from HA 3 SA 3 and the lowest number (32.00) from HA 0 treatment combination. The highest seed yield (1.97 t/ha) was found from HA 3 and the lowest (1.06 t/ha) from HA 0 SA 0 treatment combination. Among the combination of different levels of humic acid and salicylic acid, 24.0 kg/ha humic acid with 0.6 mM salicylic acid induced superior growth, yield contributing characters and yield of mustard.     EFFECT OF SOWING TIME ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUSTARD (Brassica spp.)

    The experiment was conducted during November 2017 to February 2018 to find out the effect of sowing time on growth and yield of mustard (Brassica spp). In this experiment, the treatments consisted of four different Sowing time viz. S sowing (1 st November), S 2 =2 nd sowing (11 th November), S 3 =3 November) and S 4 = 4 th sowing (1 st December), and two varieties of mustard viz. V 1 = BARI Sarisha-16, V = BARI Sarisha- 17. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. N, P, K, S, Zn and B were applied according to recommended doze. The collected data were statistically analyzed for evaluation of the treatment effect. The highest plant height was produced with BARI Sarisha-16. The maximum branches plant 2 , siliqua plant -1 and seeds silliqua -1 were recorded from BARI Sarisha-16. The maximum thousand seed weight was recorded from BARI Sarisha-16 The highest yield of seed (1.32 ton ha -1 ) was obtained from BARI Sarisha-16. The tallest plant was recorded from the treatment with S 2 = 2 nd sowing (11 th November). The maximum number of branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, length of siliqua were found in 2 nd sowing treatment (11 th November). The maximum yield of seed (1.95 tha -1 ) was obtained from 2 nd rd 1 =1 sowing (21 . sowing time treatment (11 November).The combinations of variety and sowing time had significant effect on almost all the parameters. The highest yield of seed (2.387tha -1 ) was obtained from BARI Sorisha-16 and S 2 = 2 nd sowing time (11 th November) treatment combination.     EFFECT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF POTASSIUM AND BORON ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY AND YIELD OF TOMATO

    A field experiment was carried out at the Agricultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during November 2017 to April 2018 to study the effect of different levels of potassium and boron on morpho-physiology and yield of tomato. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor-A viz. K (0 kg K ha -1 ), K 1 (60 kg K ha -1 ) and K 2 (100 kg K ha -1 ) and Factor-B viz. B (0 kg B ha -1 ), B 1 (0.5 kg B ha -1 ) and B 2 (1.0 kg B ha -1 ). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. The total treatment combinations were nine (9) and the planting material was BARI Tomato-14. Results revealed that potassium (K) and boron (B) individually as well as in combination showed significant variation among the treatments for most of the parameters. Different doses of K showed significant influence on the plant height and number of leaves plant -1 at 50 and 70 DAT, number of flower cluster plant -1 , fruit diameter, single fruit weight, number of fruits cluster -1 , number of fruits plant -1 , fruit weight plant -1 and fruit yield (t ha ). Boron application failed to show significant effect on plant height, number of leaves plant -1 ,SPAD value, fruit length. In addition, B showed significant effects yield contributing characters such as number of fruits plant , fruit diameter, fruit weight plant -1 and fruit yield (t ha -1 ).In terms of combination of K and B, the maximum plant height (54.60 cm) and number of leaves plant (15.35) were achieved from the treatment combination of K 2 B . The together application of K 2 and B increased the highest fruit yield of tomato which are consistent the different morphological and yield contributing characters of this study. Therefore, it is concluded that K in combination with B could increase fruit yield of tomato under the climatic and adaphic condition of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU). 2 2 0 -1 0 -1 -1

    USE OF MEDIA IN RECEIVING INFORMATION BY THE ROOFTOP GARDENERS

    The purpose of the study was to find out the extent of use of media in receiving information by the rooftop gardeners and to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the rooftop gardeners and their use of media in receiving information. The study had been conducted based on data collection in the selected area of Gulshan Block, Dhaka Metropolitan Agriculture Office. Data were collected from 90 rooftop gardeners from 10 April, 2019 to 10 May, 2019. Descriptive statistics, Pearson‟s Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation (r) were used for data analysis. The results show that the highest proportion (63.3 %) of the rooftop gardeners had medium use of media in receiving information and 18.9 percent of the rooftop gardeners had high use of media in receiving information and 17.8 percent fell in low use of media in receiving information. A significant positive relationship of rooftop gardeners‟ age, level of education, experience in rooftop gardening, knowledge on rooftop gardening with their use of media in receiving information were found. As per Media Use Index (MUI), Facebook ranked the 1 st and Hand Books ranked as last position. It is recommended that the DAE, Horticultural Center, Metropolitan Agriculture Office and NGOs should take necessary steps considering the significant variables with a view to motivating the rooftop gardeners towards higher use of media in receiving information.

    FARMERS’ KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE (KAP) TOWARDS AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION OF BABUGANJ UPAZILLA UNDER BARISHAL DISTRICT

    Mechanization is a process through which agricultural activities can be improved and optimum crop production can be achieved. The objectives of this study were to describe the selected socio-economic profile of the farmers, to determine the extent of farmers’ knowledge, attitude and practice against agricultural mechanization, to explore the correlation among each of selected characteristics of farmers and their knowledge, attitude and practice towards agricultural mechanization. The study was undertaken purposively in Babuganj upazilla under Barishal district. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data. The statistical measures such as range, means, standard deviation, number and percentage distribution were used to describe the selected variables. Pearson’s Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation (r) was used in order to explore the relationships between the concerned variables. The findings of the study showed that 86.8% of the farmers had poor to moderate knowledge, 63.21% of them had low favorable attitude and 77.4% had medium level of practice of agricultural mechanization. The findings also implies that the educational qualification, farm size, annual family income, area under agricultural mechanization, training received on agricultural mechanization, agricultural extension media contact, agricultural machinery using experience had significant relationship with their knowledge, attitude and practice towards agricultural mechanization. Bangladesh agriculture is currently facing several challenges like ageing farmers, feminization of agriculture, farm labor shortage, shrinking land, degradation of natural resources, soaring prices, and vulnerability to climate change, etc. To face these problems there is no other better option than practicing agricultural mechanization. It is concluded that adequate technical support, cooperative farming system, credit availability, extension media contact, training facilities need to be extended to enhance farmers’ knowledge, attitude and practice towards agricultural mechanization.
