    Comparative study of antihyperglycemic and antihypercholesteromic effect of aquous extract of Allium sativum (Garlic) and Zingiber officinale (Ginger) in alloxan induced rats

    The aim of this study was to compare the single and combined effect of Allium sativum (Garlic) and Zingiber officinale (Ginger) against hyperglycemia and hypercholsteremia in alloxan induced rats. A total of 300 rats were used for 5 trials. Among them 60 rats (12 normal rats and 48 alloxan induced diabetic rats) were used for each trail. In each trial rats were divided into 5 groups each containing 12 individuals as follows: Group A (Normal Control); Group B (Diabetic control); Group C (Alloxan + Garlic treated); Group D (Alloxan + Ginger treated) and Group E (Alloxan + Garlic + Ginger treated). After 18 hours of starvation, body weights, blood glucose level and blood cholesterol level were measured. Then alloxan were injected @ 100 mg/kg body weight intraperitonially to induce hyperglycemia as well as hypercholsteremia in groups B, C, D, and E. All groups were reared under normal condition from Day 1-10. To ensure the induction of hyperglycemia as well as hypercholsteremia on the day of 10 body weights, blood glucose and cholesterol level were measured. After that all groups were kept for more 21 days. During that period on Day 0, 7, 14, and 21 body weights, blood glucose as well as cholesterol level were measured by using commercially available biochemical kits. Aqueous extract of garlic and ginger were fed @ 500mg and 300mg/kg body weight daily for 21 days in groups C and D respectively and a combined dose (800mg/kg) were used for group E. The blood sugar level and blood cholesterol level were reduced in Group C from 154.5±3.98 to 120.35±4.21 and 209.11±5.24 to 126.66±6.58, respectively. In Group D the blood sugar level and blood cholesterol level were reduced from 155.5±2.99 to 123.12±4.23 and 213.43±6.21 to 128.76±6.98, respectively. But the reduction of blood sugar level and blood cholesterol level were more prominent in Group E from 156±4.11 to 110.21±3.98 and 218.12±6.34 to113.81±6.13, respectively. From the above observations it can be concluded that combined use of garlic and ginger is more effective to control hyperglycemia as well as hypercholsteremia compare to single dose.

    Comparative study of antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of aqueous extract of Momordica charantia (bitter gourd) and Coccinia indica (Telakucha) leaves in normal and alloxan diabetic rats

    ABSTRACT Effective and safer hypoglycemic agents from herbal plants are being considered as area of research as the synthetic oral anti-diabetic agents have several serious adverse effects. The aim of this research was to investigate the single and combined effect of Momordica charantia (bitter gourd) and Coccinia indica (Telakucha) leaves on blood glucose and cholesterol in diabetic rats. In this study 60 rats were divided into 5 groups and containing 12 individuals as follows: normal control (A), diabetic control (B), Alloxan with BG treated (C), Alloxan and TK treated (D) and Group E was Alloxan, BG and TK treated. Alloxan was injected at the dose of 100mg/kg body weight intra-peritoneal to each rat to induce diabetes in groups B, C, D and E. Aqueous extract of BG and TK were fed at a dose of 300mg/kg and 500 mg/kg body weight for 21 days in group C and D, respectively and combined in group E. The body weight, blood cholesterol (mg/dl) and glucose (mg/dl) level were measured on Day 0, 7, 14 and 21. The blood sugar and cholesterol level were reduced in Group C from 178.5±11.55 mg/dl to 120.45±1.98 mg/dl and 209.11±5.24 mg/dl to 126.66±6.58 mg/dl respectively and in group D, they reduced from 150.5±1.6 to 140.17±2.49 mg/dl and 212.43±6.2 to 129.77±5.94 mg/dl respectively. But the reduction of blood sugar level and blood cholesterol level were significant in Group E from 156±4.11 mg/dl to 110.21±3.98 mg/dl and 217.17±4.34 mg/dl to 114.81±4.18 mg/dl, respectively. From these findings it concluded that the combination of BG and TK can be used as anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hypercholesterolemic agent.

    Effect of Vegetable Tanning By-product on the Growth Performance of Caged Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as a Fishmeal Replacement

    The effect of vegetable tanning by-product (VTBP) on the growth performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus) under cage culture system was evaluated. The chemical composition of vegetable tanning by-product (VTBP) and Fishmeal (FM) were analyzed. The dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), ether extracts (EE) and ash content of VTBP were found 90.63, 77.02, 2.83 and 7.19%, respectively. The dry matter content of Fishmeal was recorded 87.3%. Ether extract content of Fishmeal (4.3%) was found slightly higher than the VTBP. The ash content of fishmeal was found 29.5%. But protein content of the Fishmeal (51.9%) was found much lower than the VTBP. Amino acid profile of both VTBP and Fishmeal were analyzed where the former showed higher amounts of some essential amino acids. The presence of aflatoxin in VTBP was found to be negative. The average temperature of pond water recorded during experimental period was 28.37, 27.69 and 28.64°C for treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Dissolve oxygen level was similar to all the treatments and ranged from 6.1 to 6.7 ppm. The pH value was found between the ranges of 7.3 to 7.6. However, there was no significant difference among the survival rate, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH. The fishes under various feeding treatments showed some difference in growth performance. The initial live weights of fishes were average 3 gm fish -1 . The fish productions in cage were 8.8 kg 10.2 kg 12.9 kg in treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The production showed that treatment 3 significantly different from other treatments. Treatment 3 (VTBP) showed the highest production (12.9 kg/cage) and Treatment 1 obtained the lowest production (8.8 kg cage -1 ). Mean weight gain and daily weight gain of fishes also showed similar results where the highest value for Mean weight (177.6 ± 6.65 g) gain and Daily weight gain (2.9 ± 0.11 g) were recorded in treatment 3. The survival rate was more or less similar to all the treatments which were around 97%.

    Evaluation of Suitable Doses of Hot Chilli Powder as Effective Alternative of Antibiotics on Growth Performance of Broiler

    In this study, chicks were treated with different doses of chilli powder to evaluate the physical, biochemical, pathological and economical parameters of broiler. Chilli powder was applied on 480 broiler chicks. A basal diet was supplemented with 1g/L antibiotic (positive control), 0g antibiotic (negative control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% chilli powder. At the age of 28 days, the feed conversion ratio of 2.0% and 2.5% chilli powder was found lower as compared to antibiotic and control. There was no negative impact found on dressing percentage of broilers which was tested by different doses of chilli powder. In this research, significant (P<0.05) higher blood glucose level was found in chilli powder as compared with antibiotics. Blood cholesterol was significantly lower (P<0.05) in 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% chilli powder as compared with antibiotics. SP ratio for Gumboro and Newcastle disease of 2.0%, 2.5%, 3.0% chilli powder were significantly (P<0.05) higher as compared to the antibiotics. E. coli population of all treatments were significantly (P<0.05) lower as compared to control. In economic point of view, 2.0% chilli powder was found more profitable as compared to antibiotics. Considering all the results of the present experiments, it may be concluded that poultry farmers may use 2.0% chilli powder with broiler feed as safe alternative of the traditional antibiotics and they may get more profit rather than antibiotics. Moreover, the 2.0% dietary supplementation of chilli powder may lead to the development of low-cholesterol chicken meat and may fulfill the demanded of meat for health-conscious consumers.

    Isolation, Characterization and Antibiogram Study of Pasteurella multocida Isolated from Ducks of Kishoreganj District, Bangladesh

    A study was carried out to isolate and characterize Past eurel l a mul t oci da isolates from ducks with emphasis on antibiotic sensitivity and resistant pattern. A total of 100 fecal samples were aseptically collected from sick ducks during suspected duck cholera outbreak in Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh during the period from January to December, 2009. The processed samples were cultured on blood agar media for isolation of bacteria. Pure cultures were obtained after subsequent cultures. P. mul t oci da isolates were identified according to their morphology, staining, motility, cultural and biochemical properties. The isolated bacteria were then subjected to antibiotic sensitivity test. The prevalence of isolated P. multocida from ducks was 34%. From cultural studies it was found that P. multocida showed small, glistering, mucoid and dew drop like colony on blood agar plate. They did not grow on MacConkey's agar and found to be non-haemolytic on blood agar plates. The isolates were found Gram negative with coccobacillary appearance, bipolar organisms and non-motile. All the isolates were found positive to catalase, oxidase, indole and nitrate reduction tests and negative to methyl red, Voges-Proskaur, citrate utilization and H S production tests. The isolates fermented dextrose, sucrose and manitol without production of gas but did not ferment lactose and maltose. Isolated P. multocida isolates were sensitive to ci pr of l oxaci n ( 95%) and azithromycin (80%), intermediate sensitive to gentamycin (85%), tetracycline (75%), amoxicillin (75%) and erythromycin (70%), but resistant to penicillin G (100%). 2

    Ovarian category, follicles and oocytes analysis of Goat ovaries in view of in vitro production of embryos

    The study was undertaken to evaluate the slaughter house goat ovaries, follicle and cumulus-oocytecomplexes (COCs) with the view of in vitro production of embryos. Goat ovaries were categorized as right, left, with corpus leutum (CL) and without CL group. Ovaries were then evaluated on the basis of weight (gm), length (cm), width (cm), total number of follicle on the surface of each categorized ovaries, number of follicle aspirated, total number of COCs, normal COCs and abnormal COCs. The length (cm) of right ovaries (1.19±0.09) was found significantly (p<0.05) higher than left ones (1.15±0.04). The number of normal oocyte was found significantly higher (p<0.05) in left ovaries (1.18±0.10) then right ovaries (1.11±0.09). Other parameters, including width, weight and total number of COCs aspirated per ovary did not differ significantly (P<0.05) between right and left ovaries. When compared the ovaries in between with-CL and without-CL group, significantly (p<0.05) higher number of normal COCs (1.12±0.07) were found in without-CL group with an increase of length (1.17±0.01), total number of follicles (5.21±0.03), number of aspirated follicles (2.74±0.12) and total number of COCs (1.99±0.14), but decrease in weight (0.66±0.03), width (0.76±0.02) and abnormal COCs (0.87±0.15) per ovary. Therefore, it could conclude that, both right and left ovaries is great source for large number of oocyte and without-CL ovaries is considered as a suitable source to supply quality oocyte for in vitro embryo production of goat.

    Retrospective case study of livestock diseases recorded at Fulbaria upazila veterinary hospital in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh

    The present study was undertaken to find out the suspected livestock cases recorded in upazila veterinary hospital from October 1, 2021, to November 30, 2022. The data were collected from the registered book that was maintained at the upazila livestock office. We found that cattle, goats, chickens, ducks, and pigeons were common livestock species taken to veterinary hospitals. We also found that clinical cases of animals were treated based on clinical history, clinical signs, and physical examination and diseases were grouped as infectious and non-infectious diseases in cattle and goats, diseases of chicken, duck, and pigeons. The relative ratio of occurrence of lumpy skin diseases and peste des petitis ruminants was high among other infectious diseases in cattle and goats respectively. By contrast, the relative ratio of occurrences of non-infectious bloat was high among other non-infectious diseases in cattle and goats. We also found that clinical cases in poultry were treated based on clinical history, clinical signs, physical examination, and postmortem examination and were grouped as diseases in chickens, ducks, and pigeons. The relative ratio of occurrences of visceral gout, duck viral enteritis, and pigeon pox was high among other diseases in chicken, duck, and pigeon, respectively, during the study period. In summary, the findings have indicated the various clinical cases, diagnoses, treatment approaches, and incidence in livestock species at Fulbaria Upazila Veterinary Hospital of Mymensingh district of Bangladesh.

    Use of black cumin in layer diet as cholesterol lowering agents in egg yolk

    This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa L.) on egg production and cholesterol concentration in egg yolk of laying hens. A total of 60 commercial layer strain day old layer chicks were collected and divided into three groups treated with 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% black cumin inclusion. The concentrations of total lipids, total cholesterol, phospholipids and triacylglycerols in serum and egg yolk were measured. Feeding of the diets with 1%, 1.5% and 2% black cumin seeds during the laying period found egg yolk cholesterol by 11.12, 9.88 and 9.83 mg/g respectively. The results found that feed efficiency ratio, egg production, body weight, feed intake and egg weight were nonsignificant between the treatments. However, egg yolk cholesterol concentration was found that 1.5% and 2.0% black cumin in diet were reduced cholesterol concentration insignificance (P<0.05). So, dried black cumin supplementation in diets had no any adverse effect on egg production and egg weight. Furthermore, egg yolk cholesterol concentrations were decreased. Hence, it is concluded that black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) seeds and/or the active principle are of interest as potential egg-yolk cholesterol-lowering agents.

    Use of Cinnamon and Black Cumin as Effective Alternative of Antibiotics on Growth Performance of Broiler

    ABSTRACT The experiment was conducted with Cobb-500 broiler strain. For this purpose 360 broiler chicks were purchased from Kazi Hatchery, Gazipur, Dhaka. The experiment was conducted in the month of November and December 2013 for 28 days at SAU Poultry farm. There were six treatments, Such as, T1: 0.25 % of cinnamon/ black cumin; T2: 0.50 % of cinnamon/ black cumin; T3: 0.75 % of cinnamon/ black cumin; T4: 1.0 % of cinnamon/ black cumin; T5: Basal Diets + Antibiotics and T6: Control (Basal Diet with no antibiotics or cinnamon/ black cumin) The number of replications was three for each treatment. So the total number of replications was 18 units which were randomly selected. Each replication had 10 chicks. Two experiment was conducted both for Cinnamon and Black Cumin at same time. The best common cinnamon and black cumin dose was 0.50% for feed consumption. For both cinnamon and black cumin, the height LW was found in 0.75 % level. The FCR results indicated that any dose of cinnamon and black cumin can be used for best FCR. The analytical results of mortality both for cinnamon and black cumin showed no significant difference (P>0.05) within them. So considering market price 0.25% or 0.50% dose of cinnamon or black cumin can be used for best survivevality. Similarly, lower doses of cinnamon and black cumin were suitable to keep lower blood glucose and blood cholesterol level. SP ratio for Gumboro disease were significantly higher (P<0.05) in all cinnamon supplementation groups which had positive effects on immune responses, whereas higher doses of black cumin showed positive effects on immune responses. SP ratio for Newcastle disease were significantly higher (P<0.05) in all cinnamon supplementation groups which had positive effects on immune responses. But, cumin supplementation groups had not positive effects on immune responses.
