Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period of March to June 2015 to study the influence of weed free periods on growth and yield of mungbean. The experiment comprised of two factors; Factor A: Variety (2) viz. BARI Mung-4 (V ii 1 ) and BARI Mung-6 (V ) and Factor B: Weed free periods (6) viz. No weed free period (W ), 15 days weed free period (W 2 ), 25 days weed free period (W 3 1 ), 35 days weed free period (W ), 45 days weed free period (W 5 ) and total weed free period (W ). The experiment was laid out in factorial arrangements with Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results revealed that plant height (53.10 cm), number of leaflets plant (30.39) and dry matter weight (19.42 g) plant -1 6 were significantly higher in BARI Mung-4 (V 1 ) but number of seeds pod -1 (12.05), pod length (9.10 cm), weight of 1000seed (53.68 g), seed yield (1.73 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (42.07 %) were higher in BARI Mung-6 (V ) at harvest. Weed number (225.33) and dry weight (35.65 g) of weeds m -2 2 were found to be higher in BARI Mung-6 (V ) at harvest. Total weed free period (W 6 2 ) showed better results in case of all growth and yield parameters than no weed free period (W ). Results from interaction effect of variety and weed free periods revealed that the highest plant height (54.67 cm), number of branches plant 1 (4.67), number of leaflets plant -1 (34.33), number of pod plant -1 (38.67), stover yield (6.39 t ha -1 ) and biological yield (8.42 t ha -1 ) were observed in V 1 W interaction but number of seeds pod -1 (12.33), pod length (9.29 cm), weight of 1000-seed (55.49 g), pod yield (3.21 t ha -1 ), seed yield (2.04 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (54.19 %) were higher in the interaction of V 2 W at harvest. Weed number (368.0) and dry weight (94.82 g) of weeds m -2 6 were found to be higher in V 2 W interaction at harvest. The overall result showed that BARI Mung-6 (V 2 1 6 ) with 35 days to total weed free periods (W - W 6 ) produced better yield in mungbean
