    FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT OF HYV RICE IN THE POLDER ECOSYSTEM OF THE COASTAL ZONE OF BANGLADESH

    A field experiment was conducted of the farmer field in polder 30 at Basurabad village, Batiaghata, Khulna during July to December 2016 in order to develop fertilizer management techniques for HYV rice under tidal ecosystem prevailing in the polders of the coastal zone of Bangladesh. The experiment was comprised three rice varieties viz. BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan72, and kumragor local T. aman rice and six fertilizer doses viz. No N + No P K S Zn(N ), 50% recommended N + No P K S Zn (N 2 ) , 100% recommended N + No P K S Zn(N 1 3 ) 50% recommended N + 50% recommended P K S Zn(N 4 ) , , 100% recommended N + 50% recommended P K S Zn (N 5 ) , 100% recommended N + 100% recommended P K S Zn(N ) and The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with four replication. The purpose of the experiment was to developed fertilizer management techniques for HYV rice under tidal ecosystem prevailing in the polder of the coastal zone and to find out optimum fertilizer dose of HYV Aman rice for polder ecosystem. Data on different yield contributing characters, growth, and yield were recorded. Interaction between varieties and fertilizer management showed a positive impact on growth, yield and yield attributes of aman rice. Varieties showed the significant variations on plant height, tillers hill -1 , panicle length, grains panicle -1 6 , thousand grains weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. BRRI dahn51 gave the highest grain yield (5.39 tha -1 ). Fertilizer management also significantly influenced the growth and yield attributes of aman rice. The highest grain yield (4.98 t/ha) was observed in N . Interaction between variety and fertilizer management doses significantly influences plant height, tillers hill 6 -1 , panicle length, grains panicle , thousand grains weight, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. The highest grain yield (6.30 t ha -1 ) was recorded from the V treatment combination which was statistically similar with V 1 N . The highest filled grain panicle -1 (137.75) was observed in V treatment, biological yield (12.35 tha 1 N 5 -1 5 . Straw yield (8.98 tha ) was observed in V 3 -1 1 N 6 ) was higher in V N and harvest index (56.13 %) was higher in V 1 N 1 treatment. It may be concluded that V 1 treatment showed best result in the tidal ecosystem of the polder coastal zone

    POLYETHYLENEGLYCOL (PEG) INDUCE CHANGES IN GERMINATION, SEEDLING GROWTH AND WATER RELATION BEHAVIOUR OF WHEAT UNDER SALT STRESS CONDITION

    An experiment was conducted at Laboratory of Department of Agronomy, Sher-eBangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from October 2016 to December 2016. A set of experiment was conducted in three different experiments. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five replications. Four wheat genotypes namely- ESWYT 5, ESWYT 6, ESWYT 7 and BARI gom 28 were used as test crop and different priming chemicals such as PEG, salt (NaCl) and distilled water were utilized for osmo and hydro priming. The data on germination parameters of wheat like germination percentage and growth parameters like root length, shoot length, dry weight and vigour index. Data were analyzed using a computer software MSTAT-C. The significance of difference among the treatments means was estimated by the Least Significance Difference (LSD) at 1% level of probability. The first experiment was carried out to find the effect of different concentration of PEG on germination and growth behavior of four wheat genotypes (ESWYT 5, ESWYT 6, ESWYT 7 and BARI gom 28) without any stress condition. It was found that ESWYT 5 showed the highest germination rate (95.30%), shoot length (168.20 mm), root length (158.30 mm), shoot dry weight (0.0522 mg), root dry weight (0.0432 mg), relative water content (95.05%), water retention capacity (16.18) and vigour index (311.30) with primed seeds with 10% PEG solution for 12 hours. The second experiment was conducted to optimization of pre-sowing priming time on the germination and growth behavior of wheat genotypes. It was observed that ESWYT 5 with 10% PEG primed seeds for 9 hours gave the highest germination rate (83.33%), shoot length (181.1 mm), root length (145.0 mm), shoot dry weight (0.0536 mg), root dry weight (0.0432 mg), relative water content (91.45%), water retention capacity (19.94) and vigour index (272.3). In the third experiment germination and growth behavior of primed seeds of wheat genotypes (ESWYT 5, ESWYT 6 and BARI gom 28) under salt (NaCl) stress condition were evaluated. It was observed that highest germination rate (93.81%), shoot length (157.80 mm), root length (124.6 mm), shoot dry weight (0.037 mg), root dry weight (0.0414 mg), relative water content (89.13%), water retention capacity (22.32) and vigour index (264.7) were obtained from ESWYT 5 under primed seeds placed without salt. But under salinity stress, the highest germination rate (87.62%), shoot length (154.20 mm), root length (118.50 mm), shoot dry weight (0.0349 mm) and root dry weight (0.0393 mg), relative water content (85.61 %), water retention capacity (21.40) and vigour index (238.9) were achieved from ESWYT 5 under primed seeds placed with 5 dsm

    IMPACT OF ADDED FOLIAR SPRAY OF UREA AND BORON ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN

    The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field, Sher–e- Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from March 2016 to May 2016 to study the Impact of added foliar spray of urea and boron on growth and yield of mungbean varieties. The experiment consists of two varieties viz. V = BARI Mung-5 and V 2 = BARI Mung-6 and eight levels of fertilizer management viz. T ii 1 = Recommended fertilizer (RF), T = RF + Foliar spray (FS) of water at flower initiation (FI), T 3 2 = RF + Urea (2%) FS at FI, T 4 = RF + Boron (1%) FS at FI, T = RF + Urea (2%) + Boron (1%) FS at FI, T 6 = Urea (2%) FS at FI, T = Boron (1%) FS at FI and T 8 7 = Urea (2%) + Boron (1%) FS at FI. The experiment was laid out in Split Plot Design with three replications. In this experiment, both variety and combined foliar application of N and B had significant effect on most of the growth and yield contributing parameters irrespective of mungbean varieties. Results indicated that the variety, BARI Mung-6 gave the tallest plant (49.27 cm), highest leaves plant (9.68), branches plant -1 (2.50), above ground dry matter content plant -1 (22.40 g), nodules plant -1 (64.50), pods plant -1 (21.08), pod length (8.68 cm), seeds pod (10.04), 1000 seed weight (52.25 g), seed yield (810.58 kg ha -1 -1 ), stover yield (1273.35 kg ha ) and harvest index (38.34%). In case of fertilizer management, the tallest plant (58.42 cm), highest leaves plant -1 (11.20), branches plant -1 (4.35) and nodules plant (87.33) were recorded from T (RF + Urea 2% FS at FI) but the highest above ground dry matter content plant -1 3 (25.27 g), pods plant -1 -1 (25.37), pod length (9.73 cm), seeds pod (10.43), 1000 seed weight (55.67 g), seed yield (1121.00 kg ha ), stover yield (1467.00 kg ha -1 ) and harvest index (43.31%) were recorded from T (RF + Urea 2% + Boron 1% FS at FI). Regarding combined effect, the tallest plant (59.97 cm), maximum leaves plant -1 (11.30), branches plant -1 5 -1 (4.63) and nodules plant (88.33) were recorded from the treatment combination of V 2 T but highest above ground dry matter content plant -1 (25.52 g), pods plant -1 3 (25.89), pod length (10.40 cm), seeds pod -1 (10.46), 1000 seed weight (56.67 g), seed yield (1159.00 kg ha ), stover yield (1472.00 kg ha -1 ), biological yield (2631.00 kg ha -1 ) and harvest index (44.05%) were recorded from the treatment combination of V 2 T 5 -1 -1 -1 .So, BARI Mung-6 along with T (RF + Urea 2% + Boron 1% FS at FI) is suggested for yield improvement in mungbean cultivation.

    RESPONSE OF BLACKGRAM TO FOLIAR APPLICATION OF UREA AND BORON

    The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Research Field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from March 2016 to June 2016 to study the response of foliar spray of urea and boron on growth and yield of blackgram varieties. The experiment consists of two varieties viz. V 1 = BARI Mash-2 and V 2 = BARI Mash-3 and eight levels of fertilizer management viz. T 1 = Recommended fertilizer (RF), T 2 = RF + Foliar spray (FS) of water at flower initiation (FI), T 3 = RF + Urea (2%) FS at FI, T 4 ii = RF + Boron (1%) FS at FI, T 5 = RF + Urea (2%) + Boron (1%) FS at FI, T 6 = Urea (2%) FS at FI, T 7 = Boron (1%) FS at FI and T 8 = Urea (2%) + Boron (1%) FS at FI. The experiment was laid out in Split-Plot Design with three replications. Results indicated that the variety, BARI Mash-2 gave the tallest plant (49.47 cm), branches plant -1 (4.45), above ground dry matter content plant- 1 (20.875 g) and nodules plant -1 (96.13), number of pods plant -1 (21.70), pod length (4.19 cm), number of seeds pod -1 (10.04), 1000 seed weight (34.96 g), seed yield (1.06t ha -1 ), stover yield (1.38t ha -1 ) and biological yield(2.45t ha -1 ) on the other hand the highest number of leaves plant (29.47), seeds pod -1 (5.77) and harvest index (44.77%) was produced by BARI Mash-3. In case of fertilizer management, the tallest plant (58.42 cm), pods plant (28.85), pod length (4.535cm), seeds pod -1 (6.190), 1000 seed weight (38.50g g), seed yield (1.24 t ha -1 ), stover yield (1.55 t ha -1 ), biological yield(2.79t ha -1 -1 -1 ) were recorded from T 5 (RF + Urea 2% + Boron 1% FS at FI), whereas the highest number of branches plant (4.35), above ground dry weight plant -1 (24.67 g) and nodule plant (161.8) were recorded from T 7 (Boron 1%) FS at FI) and the highest harvest index (44.80 %) were recorded from T 6 (Urea 2% FS at FI). Regarding combined effect, the tallest plant (54.27cm), highest above ground dry weight plant -1 (28.33 g) number of nodules plant -1 (170.7), pods plant -1 (31.70), pod length (4.58cm), 1000-seeds wt. (39.67 g), seed yield (1.29 t ha -1 ), stover yield (1.64 t ha -1 -1 ) and biological yield (2.93 t ha ) was found from V 1 T 5. Maximum leaves plant -1 (37.40), branches plant (4.87) was recorded from V 2 T 5 and harvest index (46.83%) recorded from V 2 . So, variety BARI Mash-2 with T 5 (RF + Urea 2% + Boron 1% FS at FI) is suggested for better result in blackgram cultivation.

    EFFECT OF PHOSPHOROUS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN UNDER DIFFERENT ROW SPACINGS

    A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Farm, Dhaka in kharif-I season during the period from March 2016 to May 2016 to study the effect of phosphorus on growth and yield of mungbean (BARI Mung-6) under different row spacings . There were two factors viz. phosphorus and different row spacings. Four phosphorus (p) levels viz. (i) P = Control; recommended (R) dose of phosphorus (48 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ), (ii) P 1 0 = 25% less than R dose; 36 kg P , (iii) P 2 = 25% more than R dose; 60 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 and (iv) P = 50% more than R dose; 72 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 . Three different row spacings viz. (i) S 3 1 = 20 cm, (ii) S = 30 cm and (iii) S = 40 cm. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication. In case of phosphorus levels, the maximum seed yield (1.41 t ha 3 -1 ) and maximum stover yield (1.67 t ha ) was recorded from P 0 (48 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatment which was statistically identical with P 2 (60 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatment and P 3 (72 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatment. The minimum seed yield (1.02 t ha -1 ) and minimum stover yield (1.28 t ha -1 ) was recorded from P 1 (36 kg P 2 O 5 ha -1 ) treatment. In case of row spacing, the highest seed yield (1.42 t ha -1 ) and highest stover yield (1.73 t ha -1 ) was achieved by S (30 cm) row spacing. Whereas, the lowest seed yield (1.13 t ha -1 2 2 ) and stover yield (1.38 t ha ) was achieved by S (20 cm) row spacing. In case of combined effect the maximum seed yield (1.57 t ha 1 -1 ) and maximum stover yield (1.86 t ha -1 ) was recorded from P 0 S 2 and minimum from P 1 S . So, from the results it may be concluded that application of phosphorous at the rate of 48 kg P 1 2 O 5 ha -1 under a row spacing of 30 cm was found to be achieving higher yield of mungbean

    FEASIBILITY OF REDUCING CHEMICAL FERTILIZER BY USING ORGANIC FERTILIZER IN LENTIL

    The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2015 to March 2016 to study the feasibility of reducing chemical fertilizer by using organic fertilizer in lentil. The experiment comprised of 11 treatments, such as T 0 : Control condition; T : All chemical fertilizers as recommended dose (RD); T 2 1 : Cowdung as RD + 75% chemical fertilizer as RD; T : Cowdung as RD + 50% chemical fertilizer as RD; T II 4 3 : Cowdung as RD + 25% chemical fertilizer as RD; T 5 : Vermi-compost as RD + 75% chemical fertilizer as RD; T : Vermicompost as RD + 50% chemical fertilizer as RD ; T : Vermi-compost as RD + 25% chemical fertilizer as RD; T 8 7 : Poultry Manure as RD + 75% chemical fertilizer as RD and T : Poultry Manure as RD + 50% chemical fertilizer as RD and T 10 9 : Poultry Manure as RD + 25% chemical fertilizer as RD. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth characters and yield were recorded. Among the treatments, all chemical fertilizers as recommended dose (T ) was found superior considering all yield contributing characters (grain yield, stover yield) and yield. The treatments T (Vermi-compost as RD + 75% chemical fertilizer as RD) and T 8 5 (Poultry Manure as RD + 75% chemical fertilizer as RD) also showed statistically similar results in respect of grain yield and most of the yield contributing characters. So, it is possible to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers by combined use of organic and chemical fertilizers without significant yield loss in lentil.

    INFLUENCE OF ROW SPACING AND NITROGEN LEVELS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF BABY CORN

    An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka to investigate the influence of row spacing and nitrogen levels on growth and yield of baby corn during the period from March to May, 2016. The experiment comprised with two factors viz., (i) Row spacing (ii) Nitrogen level. Three row spacing (S = 30 cm × 25 cm, S 2 = 45 cm × 25 cm and S = 60 cm × 25 cm) and five nitrogen levels (0 (control) - N 0 , 50 kg urea ha -1 - N 1 3 , 100 kg N ha -1 - N 2 , 150 kg N ha -1 , 200 kg N ha -1 - N ). The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications where row spacing was placed along the main plot and nitrogen level in the sub plot. Results revealed that, row spacing intermediately influenced the growth parameters, had no significant effect on most of the yield attributes but strongly influenced the yield parameters of baby corn. Number of cobs plant 4 -1 of baby corn was not significantly differed for row spacing, nitrogen levels and interaction of row spacing and nitrogen levels. The maximum cob yield (9.60 t ha -1 ) was obtained from row spacing 30 cm × 25 cm (S 1 ) and the minimum cob yield (3.68 t ha -1 ) was obtained from 60 cm × 25 cm (S ). The row spacing 30 cm × 25 cm gave 160.87% higher yield over row spacing 60 cm × 25 cm. Nitrogen level significantly influenced most of the growth, yield and yield attributes of baby corn. The maximum cob yield (6.66 t ha 3 ) was recorded from the application of 150 kg N ha -1 (N ) which was 17.05% higher than the plot received no supplementary nitrogen (N 0 3 ) (5.69 t ha -1 ). The highest cob yield (10.20 t ha -1 ) was produced when the plot treated with 150 kg N ha -1 with row spacing of 30 cm × 25 cm that was similar with same row spacing combined with 50 kg N ha and 200 kg N ha -1 , respectively. The lowest cob yield (3.31 t ha -1 ) was produced when the plot received no supplementary nitrogen with row spacing of 60 cm × 25 cm which was statistically similar with S 3 N 1 and S 3 N 2 - N . Nitrogen level 150 kg N ha with row spacing of 30 cm × 25 cm produced 208.16% higher cob than the plot received no supplementary nitrogen with row spacing 60 cm × 25 cm. Application of 150 kg N ha -1 of with 30 cm × 25 cm spacing could be the best production package for cultivation of baby corn.

    RESPONSE OF POTATO TO NITROGEN EFFICIENCY BIOAVAILABILITY (NEB) IN COMBINATION WITH CHEMICAL FERTILIZER

    Production of quality potato is the main bottleneck in Bangladesh, due to its suboptimal management strategies aside of inorganic environment. From this perspective a field experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during November, 2015 to April, 2016 to find out the response of NEB (Nitrogen Efficiency Bio-availability), an organic root exudates and chemical fertilizer on growth, yield and quality of potato (cv. Diamant). The experiment consisted of seven different doses of NEB viz., T = 50% recommended urea + 500 mL NEB ha -1 ; T 2 ii 1 = 50% recommended urea + 750 mL NEB ha = 50% recommended urea + 1000 mL NEB ha -1 ; T = 50% recommended urea and 25% reduction of P, K, S + 500 mL NEB ha -1 ; T 4 = 50% recommended urea and 25% reduction of P, K, S + 750 mL NEB ha -1 ; T 5 = 50% recommended urea and 25% reduction of P, K, S + 1000 mL NEB ha -1 and T 6 = 100% recommended fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Results demonstrated that NEB in combination with chemical fertilizers had significant effect on most of the growth, yield and quality contributing parameters studied in this experiment. Among the seven treatments, the combination of NEB at the rate of 750 mL ha -1 7 and 50% recommended urea along with other fertilizers at conventional rate showed better performance on yield, marketable yield, specific gravity, dry matter percentage and starch content of tuber compared to those of other treatments. On the other hand; TSS (Total Soluble Solid), non-marketable yield, firmness and reducing sugar showed the best performance when the crop was managed by T (100% recommended fertilizers). The maximum yield of tubers was found from T 7 2 (36.00 t ha -1 ) i.e., 45.48% increase yield over 100% recommended chemical fertilizer which was statistically similar to T 1 (34.65 t ha -1 -1 ) and T (33.52 t ha -1 ) treatments. Although, the T 1 (50% recommended urea + 500 mL NEB ha ) treatment showed the statistically similar result in case of tuber yield as T but in case of processing parameters T exhibited the best one for specific gravity (1.108), dry matter (23.27 %) and starch content (23.62 mg g 2 -1 FW) of tuber at harvest and at 40 days after storage (DAS) whereas, T performed the worst one. From this study, it may be concluded that NEB had significant positive response for the increasing of 7 potato yield and improving the processing quality of potato also when applied at the rate of 50% Urea and 750 ml of NEB per hectare. Finally, NEB may put remarkable contribution for reducing the application of chemical fertilizers.

    INFLUENCE OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOYBEAN

    Present research work was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period from November, 2015 to March, 2016 to study the influence of different combinations of inorganic and organic fertilizer on soybean (var. BARI Soybean 6). The treatment combinations of inorganic and organic fertilizers viz., T = Control, T 1 = Fertilizer at Recommended Dose (FRD), T 2 = Biofertilizer + 50% FRD, T = Biofertilizer + 75% FRD, T 4 = Mixed fertilizer + 50% FRD, T 5 = Mixed fertilizer + 75% FRD, T = Vermicompost + 50% FRD, T 7 = Vermicompost + 75% FRD, T = Poultry litter + 50% FRD and T 9 8 = Poultry litter + 75% FRD were tested in a 3 times replication with Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Results indicated that, T (Fertilizer at Recommended Dose, FRD- Urea: 50 kg ha -1 , TSP: 150 kg ha -1 , MP: 100 kg ha 1 -1 , Gypsum: 80 kg ha -1 ), T 7 (Vermicompost + 75% FRD) and T 9 and Boron: 500 g ha (Poultry litter + 75% FRD) influenced significantly on most of the growth, yield parameters and yield of soybean. Application of fertilizers at recommended dose, vermicompost + 75% FRD and poultry litter + 75% FRD produced higher level of grain yield 2053, 2073 and 2166 kg ha respectively. The treatments T 1 , T 7 and T also showed statistically similar results in respect of yield and yield contributing characters. Poultry litter + 75% FRD and vermicompost + 75% FRD produced 5.50 and 4.49% higher yield over FRD. The maximum yield might be attributed to higher number of pods plant 9 -1 and seeds pod -1 . Considering the sustainable yield and sound environment, poultry litter + 75% FRD (T ) or vermicompost + 75% FRD (T ) seems promising for soybean cultivation.

    YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO AS INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT PROPORTION OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC FERTILIZERS AND THEIR PERFORMANCE IN AMBIENT CONDITION

    An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November, 2014 to April, 2015 to study the yield and quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) as influenced by different proportion of inorganic and organic manures and their performance in ambient condition. Five varieties such as, „Asterix‟, „Lady rosetta‟, „Courage‟, „Diamant‟ and „BARI TPS-1‟ and different proportion of inorganic and organic manure application practices viz., 100% recommended fertilizer, cowdung, poultry litter and ACI organic manure were considered for the study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Application of different organic manures may improve the quality of potato. Results revealed that, different potato varieties and/or organic manure applications had significant effect on most of the yield and quality contributing parameters studied in this experiment. Among the five varieties „Diamant‟ produced maximum tuber, the highest weight of marketable tuber (t ha -1 ), the highest firmness. But Lady rosetta showed the highest dry matter, specific gravity, glucose and sucrose content. In terms of organic manure applications, different organic manure practices showed different results. The control (100% recommended fertilizer) showed the highest tuber yield (t ha ). The organic manure practices with 50% RDF + ACI organic manure showed the highest dry matter content, specific gravity, reducing sugar content, sucrose and starch content. In case of combined effect variety and organic manure applications; different treatment combination gave different responses. Among the twenty treatment combinations of “Diamant x 100% RDF” showed the highest tuber yield (57.23 t/ha), where “Lady rosetta x 50% RDF + ACI organic manure” showed the highest dry matter content (22.02), specific gravity (1.07), reducing sugar content (1.498mg/g FW) and starch content (13.653 mg/g FW).
