Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Field Laboratory, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during the boro season of 2008 to study the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the yield and nutrient uptake of BRRI Dhan 28. The work was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. There were fourteen treatment combinations comprising of different levels of recommended doses of chemical fertilizers and organic manures (cowdung, poultry manure and mustard oil cake) along with control. Cowdung, poultry manure and mustard oil cake were applied 10 days before transplantation and the full doses of TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits at 7, 30 and 60 DAT. The grain and straw yields as well as the yield contributing characteristics like plant height, number of tillers hill’, number of effective tillers hill’, panicle length, number of grains panicle™', number of filled grains panicle’ and 1000 grain weight were significantly influenced due to different treatments. The highest grain (5300) and straw (8700 kg ha’) yields were recorded in the treatment T, (100% RFD) followed by 75% RFD + 25% organic manure. Among the combined application of chemical fertilizers and organic manures, 75% RFD + 25% MOC exerted beneficial effects on yield and yield contributing characteristics of BRRI Dhan 28 compared to cowdung and poultry manure. A significant increase in the NPK contents as well as their total uptake due to combined application of fertilizers and manures were observed. Analyses of post-harvest soil fertility status revealed that the application of organic manures positively influenced the organic matter, total N, available P, exchangeable K, available S, and available Zn contents while all the treatments slightly decreased the soil pH.

Description

Bangladesh is an agrarian country. Her agriculture is dominated by intensive rice (Oryza sativa L.) culture, which is the principal carbohydrate supplying food crop for its increasing population. Here, about 80% of the total cultivable land is used for this crop. It is grown over about 64.63 lakh hectares under diverse irrigated and rainfed conditions in the three seasons (Aus, Aman and Boro) with the total production of 125.55 lakh metric tons (BBS, 2006). Among the rice growing countries, this republic ranks fourth in respect of area (10.9 million hectare) and total production (38.5 million tons). Unfortunately, have its national average yield (3.5 t ha”) is not pleasing one in compared to other agriculturally advanced countries like Japan, China, Vietnam and Indonesia, where per hectare yields are 6.50, 6.20, 4.60 and 4.50 t ha’, respectively (FAO, 2006).
