Abstract

The present research work was conducted at the research field of the Department of Crop Physiology and Ecology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur during the period from February to April, 2011 (in the Kharif-1 season) to study the effects of different concentrations of NAA (0 ppm, 100 ppm, 200 ppm and 300 ppm) on the growth and yield characteristics of three mungbean varieties (BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3 and BARI Mung-4). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results indicated that the growth, yield and yield contributing characters of the cultivars were significantly influenced by the interaction of varieties and different concentrations of NAA with a few exceptions. Plant height, leaf area per plant, leaf dry weight plant’, shoot dry weight plant’', root dry weight plant, total dry matter, number of flower plant', number of pod plant’, pod length(cm), dry pod weight(g), number of seed pod", 100 seed weight(g), seed yield plant’ '(g), harvest index (%) and seed yield (kg/ha) were found highest when NAA was applied at the rate of 200ppm. Among the varieties BARI Mung-4 showed the best performance on above parameters. Yield advantage in 65.62% due to the application of superior dose ( 200 ppm) NAA. The experimental results indicated variations in respect of mungbean varieties to different concentrations of NAA and suggested that 200 ppm may be the judicious dose under field conditions.

Description

Mungbean (Vigna radiata L.Wilcezek) under the family Leguminosae and subfamily Papilionaceae is an important pulse crop of Bangladesh. It is a rich source of vegetable protein. It is mainly a day neutral warm season crop commonly grown in semiarid to subhumid tropics and subtropics. It is cultivated most extensively in India, Myanmer, Thailand, Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam, China, Japan, Philippines, Korea, Indonesia, Srilanka and Islands in the south pacific (FAO 2003).
