EFFECT OF NEMATICIDE AND SOME PLANT EXTRACTS AGAINST ROOT-KNOT (Meloidogyne javanica) OF BRINJAL

Abstract

Four treatments viz. curaterr solution, standard (S) leaf extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica), marigold (Tagetes erecta) and dhalkalmi (Ipomoea fistulosa) with a control were tested against root-knot of brinjal caused by Meloidogyne javanica. Among the treatments, curaterr solution gave superior result followed by neem leaf extract (S) in plant growth as they had increased length of shoot and root as well as fresh weight of shoot and root and yield correspondingly with the lowest galling incidence. Better effect on plant growth characters with lower galling incidence observed with marigold leaf extract (S). Dhalkalmi leaf extract (S) was found effective in suppressing the nematode activities as evident with moderate growth of plants. Negative correlations between gall number with shoot and root length, shoot and root weight and fruit weight indicate the positive response of the treatments on brinjal against root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica).

Description

Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) is one of the most common, popular and cheap vegetable grown throughout the all seasons in Bangladesh and mostly available in winter season. It ranks as one of the top most vegetable in the tropics on the basis of production and economic importance. It is highly productive and usually finds its place as the poor man’s crop. It has food and nutritive value; in 100g of edible part of brinjal which contains carbohydrate 2.2 g, protein 1.8 g, fat 2.9 g, vitamin 5.20 mg, iron 0.9 mg, calcium 28.0 g, water 92.4 g, ash 1.3 g, kilocalorie 42.0 wg, carotene 850 mg (Meah,2003).
