Brinjal (Solanum melongena) is a popular, cheap and easily available vegetables round the year in Bangladesh. It is mostly cultivated in the winter season. It ranks as one of the topmost vegetables in the tropics on the basis of production and economic importance. In Bangladesh, 22.5 and 37.5 thousand hectare area were under its cultivation and the total production was 118.3 and 240.1 thousand m.ton in both kharif and rabi season, respectively (B.B.S 2004). It has nutritive value having carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamin and minerals.
Plant extracts were used in the juvenile mortality test of Meloidogyne javanica where extract of Satodrone (Leucas aspera) showed the best performance followed by Upatlangra (Achyranthes aspera), Kharazora (Teinoatachynun griffithii), Takamondir (Tinospora cordifolia) and Telakucha (Coccinea cordifolia) extract. Eleven treatments with above plant extracts, Satodrone S leaf extract gave the highest response followed by Upatlangra, Kharazora, Takamondir and Telakucha in plant growth characters like length of shoot and root, fresh weight of shoot and root with corresponding lower galling incidence with the population of L, L3, L4 and adult female of M. javanica on brinjal after 10 and 24 days after transplantation. Similarly, half standard (S/2) extract of Satodrone exhibited superior performance followed by Upatlangra, Kharazora, Takamondir and Telakucha in plant growth characters in brinjal with corresponding lower galling incidence and population of M. javanica in pot experiments. Better plant growth and the lower galling as well as suppressed population of M. javanica were found with all the treatments (S and S/2) at 10 days after transplantation than those parameters recorded at 24 days after transplantation with the same treatments. Negative correlations between galling incidence with shoot and root length as well as shoot and root weight of brinjal indicated the better action of plant extracts suppressing the nematode activity.
