Abstract
Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease infecting humans and animals. It causes a great
economic losses in livestick industries through abortion, infertility, birth of
weak and dead offsprings, increased calving interval etc. Bangladesh has been
reported an endemic area for brucellosis. Because of its economic impact on
animal health and the risk of transmission to human population most of the
endemic countries have a brucellosis control program. The present study was
conducted to determine the seroprevalence of Brucella infection in cattle in
Bogra district. Among 100 sera sample, 58 sera were collected from Bogra
Sadar Upazila and 42 sera were collected from Bogra Dairy Farm. The
epidemiological history and blood was collected from the cattle of above
mentioned area. The sera sample was subjected to Rose Bengle plate test
(RBPT) for screening of brucella antibodies. The higher rate of brucella
antibody was recorded (5.5%) in cattle of above four years of age, (4.05%) in
female cattle, (5.17%) in cattle of Bogra Sadar Upazila, (5.4%) in naturally bred
cattle, (4.76%) in aborted cattle, (6.06%) in pregnant cattle, (5.45%) in cross
breed cattle and (4.62%) in grazing cattle. The prevalence of brucellosis in
Bangladesh cow population is not negligible and it is worthwhile to consider
adoption of preventive measures.
Description
Brucellosis is considered by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the
World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal
Health (OIE) as the most widespread zoonoses worldwide (Mustafa & Nicoletti,
1995; Acha & Szyfres, 2001). It is produced by small non-motile, coccobacilli,
gram negative bacteria belong to the genous Brucella (Kakoma et al., 2003;
Baek et al., 2003). In 1887, David bruce who first identified them(Orduna et al.
,2001) and 18 years later, Zammit established a zoonotic relationship (Nicoletti,
1992).Brucella abortus was first isolated from aborted cattle by Bernard Bang
and hence the disease was named ‘Bang’s Disease’’(Nicoletti,1990). The
disease is also called as ‘Undulant Fever’ and *‘Mediterrannean Fever’? (WHO,
2006).
