Bangladesh is an agro-based country of where about 80% people live on agriculture of which about 20% are engaged in raising livestock including poultry (Rahman and Rahman,1998).An annual 20% average growth rate of poultry including duck, has been achieved in the past decade (Rahman, 2003). The poultry industry comprising of commercial poultry with broilers and layers as well as traditional scavenging backyard poultry production plays an important role in the economy of Bangladesh. There are approximately 163.50 millions of poultry including ducks being reared throughout Bangladesh. (Kamruddin and Giasuddin, 2003) and 130 hatcheries with 8 in public sector providing about 0.476 million chicks and duckling weekly. Moreover, 5 million people are engaged in this sector with an investment of approximately Taka 22,000 (Rahman, 2003). As regards poultry vaccine, there are two laboratories one each in public and private sector but as well as 9 organizations (Veterinary Medicinal Portion) are importing varieties of vaccine. Beside this, there are 13 poultry disease diagnostic laboratories, including 8 in public sector and 5 in private sector (Kamruddin and Giasuddin, 2003).
The prevalence of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) antibody in chickens in 05 selected small scale layer Farms in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh was determined during the period March to August, 2010. To conduct this study a total of 304 (10% birds of farm) sera samples were collected. Rapid Serum Plate Agglutination (SPA) test was performed using commercial MG antigen to detect the presence of antibodies against MG. The over all prevalence of MG antibody was 54.6% in the study area. The highest prevalence (61.7) was found at March-April followed MayJune (50.8) and July-August (47.73). The result further revealed that the infection was higher (69.6%) in young birds than in adult birds (50.4%). It was also demonstrated that the infection was higher (68.5%) in large flocks than in small flocks (50.10%). M. gallisepticum was isolated from tracheal swabs obtained from seropositive birds by inoculating the tracheal swabs into Mycplasma agar and Mycoplasma broth media during the period of study.
