Abstract

Due to the widespread use of the internet and increasing access to smart devices, the global e- commerce industry is thriving, and Bangladesh is no exception—its e-commerce sector is expanding at an exceptional rate. With flexible online payment systems and low barriers to entry, starting an e-commerce business has become a popular choice for entrepreneurs in Bangladesh. However, alongside this rapid growth comes a darker side: the lack of proper government regulations and monitoring has allowed fraudulent activities to flourish, causing significant financial losses for consumers who never received the products they paid for. This report by RNS Technology Ltd. highlights both the opportunities and challenges in Bangladesh’s e-commerce landscape. While there is immense potential driven by market competition, growing internet penetration, and the support of allied industries like digital marketing and software development, several issues persist chief among them, Dhaka-centric growth, concerns over product quality, and consumer distrust in online payment systems. Despite recent scams, the findings suggest that while general consumer confidence in online shopping remains relatively stable, trust in government action to protect digital transactions is lacking. The report also emphasizes the need for further research on demographic, psychographic, and economic factors across different districts to help e-commerce businesses expand beyond urban areas. Ultimately, the report concludes that the government has a critical role in shaping the future of the industry by introducing robust regulations, ensuring consumer protection, and fostering a safer and more reliable digital marketplace. With proper oversight, both businesses and consumers can engage more confidently in e-commerce, contributing to the sustainable growth of the sector and the national economy.
