Abstract

The behaviour of prestressed. rectangular beaTIs containing a single hole or an array of circular holes is reported. Theoretical and experimental studies are described, attention being given to th~ elastic stress distribution around the holes, the deflection of beams containing multiple holes, the ultimate load carrying capacity and to possible methods of strengthening perforated beams by additional reinforcement. Computer programmes are developed for the calculation of the stress distribution around holes for the application of prestress, pure bending and bending with shear. The experimental results from tests on a total of thirty- Seven beams show good agreement with the theoretical results •
