dc.description.abstractMungbean is an ecologically important food grain legume crop. Susceptibility towards different insect pest has limited the productivity of mungbean. A study were conducted with six mungbean varieties viz. BARIMUG 4, BARIMUG 5, BARIMUG 6, BINAMUG 5, BINAMUG 6 and BINAMUG 8 on the tolarance of different insect pests during the growing period (May to June, 2014). Aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch), jassid (Empoasca kerri), thrips (Megalurothrips distalis), pod borer (Maruca testularis), bean bug (Riptortus pedestris), epilachna beetle (Epilachna spp.) and hairy caterpillar (Diachrisia obliqua) were identified as pests in all tested varieties. Thrips was a major and first insect pest which showed highest incidence in different mungbean varieties to compare with other insect pests. Aphids also showed second highest incidence in different varieties of mungbean. Presence of different insect population (adult) in six mungbean varieties xxvii showed highest in 2nd and 3rd week of the month May and gradually were decreased after 3rd week of this month. BARIMUG 4, BARIMUG 5, BARIMUG 6 and BINAMUG 5 were highly susceptible to thrips and aphids while, BINAMUG 6 and BINAMUG 8 were less-susceptible. BARIMUG 4, BARIMUG 5, BARIMUG 6, BINAMUG 5 and BINAMUG 8 were the less-susceptible to hairy caterpillar, but only BINAMUG 6 was the less susceptible to aphid, epilachna beetle and hairy caterpillar compare to the other mungbean varieties. BINAMUG 5, BINAMUG 6 and BINAMUG 8 appeared to be the varieties in terms of less susceptible and yield. Among the mungbean varieties the highest yield (1.42kg) obtained from BINAMUG 5 while, it was the lowest (0.52 kg) in BARIMUG 4. Therefore, BINAMUG 5, BINAMUG 6 and BINAMUG 8 appeared to be the best varieties in terms of tolarance and yield.
