Abstract
Waterlogging is a burning problem of Dhaka city, and the major reason behind it is the loss of
canals. Despite several attempts taken by relevant authorities to dredge and remove illegal
encroachments, these recovery steps have never been successful for various factors. However,
for a permanent recovery, a holistic relation between the canal system and the immediate
neighborhoods need to be established, as we can learn from the examples set by cities that have
already revived their canals. This paper focused on studying the contexts of Kallyanpur canal,
and explored the possibilities of reintroducing canal’s navigability by including boating
services in a TOD. Hence, a strategic plan was devised which can be replicated during any
canal’s revival. A neighborhood scale transit station was designed, which should be the initial
interaction point with the canal during commute. Lastly, demonstration of edge treatment is
done where the frequent dialogue of a neighborhood would happen.
