Due to excessive pressure on overland roadways, underground subway or roadway is regarded as an alternative solution to accommodate this huge traffic. For this reason, construction of a suitable underground tunnel is a good alternative. Because the urban tunnel construction is normally carried out in difficult and crowded city areas, one of major design and construction challenges lies in minimizing the induced ground movement, as it poses potential threats to nearby buildings and utilities along the tunnel alignment. Most of the previous works were done to study the impact of the tunnel excavation on adjacent buildings which is of major interest for tunneling construction in urban areas, due to the high interaction between tunneling and existing structures. In context of the previous studies, present study aims at investigating the design parameters (such as thickness, position) of an underground tunnel which is constructed in such a zone where a residential area is being developed far away from the business center, for example, near any river embankment, where new land is being developed using sand filling taken from the dredged materials from the bed of the rivers. The response of the nearby structures (displacement, bending moment, shear force) will not only be dependent on the construction sequence of the tunnel, but also will be dependent on the change in water level near the embankment as these embankments are subjected to a certain water head difference due to difference in water levels on both sides of the embankment causing seepage of water through the embankment and generating uplift forces in adjacent structures. Such phenomena may also induce lateral displacements to nearby tunnels, buildings and if overlooked, can cause severe structural damage at their base. In this particular study, a simple 2D plain strain model has been developed in PLAXIS-2D. Various scenarios have been simulated by construction of tunnel and varying the water level on one side of the embankment. The behavior of both nearby tunnel and building has been observed in terms of generated maximum displacement, bending moment and shear force. Simulated results show both increase and decrease in the parameters mentioned above for varying thickness of tunnel, vertical distance of center of tunnel from existing ground level, distance between tunnel center and center of structure and varying water head difference on both sides of the embankment. Model results in this research, incorporating some of these variations showed that a tunnel away from the embankment, just below the center of the road or any heavily loaded building, having lining thickness of 0.380m at 6.5m below ground level is adequate considering economy of tunneling and vertical displacements generated in nearby structures.Item Stability coefficient of moment resisting frame structure for different building parameters(Department of Civil Engineering, BUET, 29-09-21) Subbir Bin Harun, Md.; Ahsan, Dr. RaquibHigh Rise Moment Resisting Frame structures are exposed to both static and dynamic loads. The process of designing high-rise buildings depends on many parameters. Stability Coefficient is one of them. It indicates whether a Moment Resisting frame Structure needs a second order analysis or not. P-delta effect is secondary effect on a structure. It is also known as “Geometric non-linearity effect”. As number of stories increases P-delta effect becomes more important. If the change in bending moment and displacement due to lateral load is more than 10% of primary moment and displacement P-delta effect should be considered in design, that is, second order analysis is required. There are many important factors which take part in determination of stability coefficient. Load, base shear, earthquake load characteristics, story drift etc. play vital role in this factor. This study covers stability coefficient determination of ninety (90) moment resisting frame buildings for different building parameters to determine when it is necessary to perform the second order analysis. Moment resisting frames are considered as frames which resist 100% of seismic force and are not enclosed or adjoined by components that are more rigid and will prevent the frames from deflecting under seismic forces. In this study, three different aspect ratios of structure are compared individually in same seismic zone namely Seismic Zone II of Bangladesh. As a case study a commercial building located at Dhaka city of Bangladesh with a floor area around 1000 square meter per floor has been considered in this study. Each structure was analyzed, and designed separately for comparison. Comparisons were made for height of structure varying from two storied to thirty storied building. Comparisons were made for both symmetric and asymmetric buildings. The comparisons were made in terms of their stability coefficient obtained from Finite Element analysis. Finally, it is concluded that for up to 24 storied RCC building at Dhaka city in both the cases of symmetric and asymmetric commercial buildings considered in the case study one does not need to consider P-delta effect in the analysis.Item L-1 T-2, B. In this way 1, t was hoped to determine whether the contrad~ation of results found in the literature could be ascribed to the different kinetic behaviours of these catalysts. As a secondary aim it was intended to obtain some clues to the mechanisms of this reaction although it was realised that the statistical design method used was not particularly suitable for the production of rate equations of great accuracy. A differential reactor Was used in this work. The commercial catalysts studied in this investigation "",;rethe products of Girdler Catalysts (G-3A and G-66B),A.B.' Svenska Saltpeterverken of Sweden, Power Gas and I.C.I.Limited, • All the catalysts except Girdler G-66B worked between 3500 to 4500C. Working temperature range of Girdler G-66B was 1800 to .0 /320.C. All studies were carried out at atmospheric pressu~e, Results showed activities of the shift catalysts of the order: .Girdler G-66B, SSV (Sweden), Power Gas, I.C.I., Girdler G-3A. ,Kinetic studies showed that the forward reaction was nearly first • order with respect to carbon monoxide for Power Gas, I.C.I. and Girdler G-3A catalysts, but fractional for SSV and Girdler G-66B - catalysts. The order of reaction with respect to steam was fr.a,ctional for all the catalysts. The order with respect to . hydrogen was zero for SSV catalyst, but retarding effects were .. 'obserVed for the rest. The fon'iard reaction was unaffected by carbon dioxide for Girdler G-66B, but retarded in the. case of the rest of the catalysts, • • .. " • • • • • •• • • \ • • ... ' • • I , • \ .•. 1#". • . .. From these results it is bOficluded that the divergence in results can be ascribed to the different behaviour of individual catalysts. Comparison with previous work using the SSV catalyst gives good agreement with the present results. M.For abstracts please see full textItem Experimetal investigation of the evaporation and combustion of fuel droplet arrays(Department of Mechanical Engineering, 1966-09) Azizul Huq, Abu Md.; Desa, Valentine GeraldExperimental investigation was conducted on stati.onary fuel droplets in order to study" the e~aporation rate and combustion rate of fuel droplets at different temperature levels and the influence of neighbouring drops on the evaporation and combustion rate of fuel droplets, the distance between the droplets being 0.15 to 0.3 cm. The experimental set up consisted mainly of an electri.c tube furnace , electronic stroboscope used in conjunction with a stationary film camera and quartz fibres for holding the fuel droplets. Fuel droplets were suspended from quartz fibres and introduced into the hot electric furneee ( ambient gas being quies cent air), and the rate of decrease of droplet diameter is recorded on the photographic film. From the silhouete of the droplet diameter the necessary calculation were made to determine the evaporation and combustion rates. From the experimental investigations it has been found that for each of the droplets in single,double and triple droplet arrays the square of the droplet diameter varies linearly with time both during evpporation and combustion.Again for similar experimental conditions, the evaporation constant for each of the droplets in double and triple arrays has been found to be lower than that of the single droplet thus showing the influence of droplet interaction on the evaporation rate.It has also been observed that the droplet interaction modifies the burning rate of fuel droplets. In this investigation only single,double and triple droplet arrays have been studied.
