Item A study on experiences & challenges of mothers of children with autism in Dhaka city(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Akter, SharminAutism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), also referred to as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs), are characterized by deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, and repetitive or restricted interests and behaviors. To date, much of the literature on ASDs has been conducted from a western perspective, although interest in ASDs from a global perspective has dramatically increased in recent years. In Bangladesh just a few years back, people were merely aware about disability with Autism. Although a few researches on ASDs have been conducted in Bangladesh, interest in ASDs from a global perspective has dramatically increased in recent years. However, no research has been conducted in this area. The nature of qualitative methodology makes it best suited for capturing the nuances and complexity of the psychological phenomenon underlying the experiences being studied. These experiences help to capture and reflect the ways in which culture impacts these experiences. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences and challenges of mothers raising children diagnosed with an ASD in Dhaka City using a qualitative research approach. The prevalence is currently rising in many countries around the world. Caring for and educating children and young people with this condition places challenges on health care, education and training programmers. The government is going to count the number of autistic children in Bangladesh. About 10% of Bangladesh's people are challenged of those, 1% is estimated to be autistic, amounting to around 1.5 lakh people. Many children diagnosed with ASDs in our country have very limited access to educational settings, and an abundance of barriers to treatment exist. As such, there is much to be gained from studying mothers’ experiences with their child’s early development and their initial concerns for their child’s development, their experiences with the diagnostic process, the perceived impact of raising a child on the spectrum for themselves and their family, their daily living experiences, their experiences accessing supports and services, their vision for the future, as well as any advice they would give to mothers of children who were recently diagnosed. To this end, the experiences of 20 mothers raising a child diagnosed with an ASD and living in Dhaka City were captured through open-ended interviews in this study.Item Indigenous coping mechanism for combating disaster in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Rahman, Md. MafizurThe study was conducted based on broad objective of exploring indigenous coping mechanisms for combating disaster at Koyra upazila of Khulna and Patharghata upazila of Barguna district. For attaining broad objective the study has been conducted with some important objectives (a) to know the socio demographic information of the respondents (b) to reveal the indigenous perception about disaster (c) to explore the indigenous coping mechanisms for combating disaster (d) to reveal the Governmental and NGOs mechanisms for combating disaster and (e) to draw some suggestions for improving the coping system with disaster. The study has been employed qualitative research method and selected 10 respondents for case study through using purposive sampling method and two FGDs were conducted in the study areas with community people. The findings of the study show that most of the respondents are not well educated. Most of the respondents live in house with less secured. The study reveals that almost every year disaster like flood, river bank erosion, cyclone and tidal surge hit in study areas. Disaster causes loss of property, environmental imbalance, damage of infrastructures, in word, people lead miserable life during or after disaster. Community people adopt different indigenous mechanisms for combating disastrous impact. The study indicates that people adopt these mechanisms before and after disaster. they take structural ( repairing embankment, raising homestead platform, construction of road etc) and non structural ( making people aware, tying houses with strong trees, planting disaster resilient trees, taking shelter in cyclone center during disaster, preserving food for future and dissemination of news about imminent disaster etc). The study also reveals that early warning system play crucial role in minimizing the consequences of disaster. The study found that community participation helps to lessen the negative effects of disaster. The Government and NGOs take initiative for recovering the catastrophic situation. The Government of Bangladesh take both structural and non structural mechanisms for combating disaster whereas NGOs take non structural mechanisms (making people aware, providing material services, providing training) only. The Government of Bangladesh has formulated disaster management act, policy and plan but people in the study area don’t have any idea regarding this issues. To combat or minimize the tragic circumstance of coastal belt, Government should formulate the coastal belt policy as well as implement the policy. The coastal belt should be made disaster resilient.Item A study on situation of children in separated family in Dhaka city(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Tabassum, TasniaThe Study was conducted among the children of separated parents based on broad objectives of exploring the present situation of children living with the separated parents’ family in Dhaka city. For attaining the broad objectives the study focus some important objectives a) To know the socio-economic background of the children of Separated family; b) To explore the consequence of Separation on achieving education; c) To explore the pattern of relationship with the family members; d) To know the pattern of psychological alienation faced by the respondents. The whole study was conducted among the vulnerable children at Dhaka City. The Study has been followed qualitative research method and for this purpose it selected 10 case (children) remaining in the parental separation through using the purposive sampling method for the study. The findings of the study show that maximum children living in the separated family mentally suffered a lot; they behave irrationally and commit several unethical activities in their early age. The study also found that children from comparatively needy level has committed in criminal activities and suffer extreme physical and mental pressure. It also reveals that being a child of separated family they cannot get the proper love, priority and opportunity from their peer and teacher. It also shown that, children from separated family cannot get the equal opportunities from their school teacher. And the neighbor of their existing community always shows irritate attitude towards them. As a result the tender mind of such children fill up with full of sorrows and anger even some little boys and girls take drugs abstaining from their pain. The most promising findings of the study shows that children in the separated family are the most vulnerable in their lifestyle and the future of those children will stage in risk if they are not properly rehabilitate. But it is a great matter of sorrow that, the Government and non government organization are not serious on the important issue. Children are the future of a society but our supreme authority has not take any strict and children friendly initiatives for such vulnerable children. It can be said that if the Government and NGOs continue their existing service and child rights effectively than day by day they will be self-sufficient and contribute to our society like the other normal children. Despite of hope it is observed that they are not aware about their rights and opportunities but we should remained in mind that to improve their situation and for the bright future we have to reshuffle the laws and formulate alternative children friendly policies and services.Item Indigenous coping mechanism for combating disaster in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Rahman, Md. The annual flooding over the plains caused by these rivers is considered to be the blessing because it makes the land fertile and the curse if the magnitude of floodwaters regularly causes bank slumping and erosion. As the consequences, every year thousands of people are affected by flood and erosion hazards especially those who live not away from the river banks. Sufferings of riverbank erosion is very terrible on the elderly as they are considered the most vulnerable and dependent group during every disaster period. Riverbank erosion has long been a dominant environmental problem affecting many people of Bangladesh especially the elderly. It has so many adverse effects on the lives and livelihood of the people of this disaster prone country. In this study, it is tried to explore the impact of riverbank erosion on the elderly living in a coastal area of Bangladesh. This study is both quantitative and qualitative in nature. Here, the basic method is sample survey. Apart from these a few case studies were conducted to supplement the total findings of the study. Char Alexander at Ramgoti upazila in the Lakshmipur district is the study area. Purposive sampling method is used for determining the sample where 100 elderly people are selected as sample. The data for this study is collected both from primary and secondary sources. The study is relied on interviews, observation and case study methods. The main objective of the study is to find out the impact of riverbank erosion such as socio-economic, physical (physical illness, sanitation and water source) and psychological status (anxiety, MDD and PTSD) on the livelihood of the affected elderly. Besides, this study has emphasized some recommendations given by the affected elderly for improving their condition.Item Elder Abuse and Neglect: A Study on Sribordi Upazila in Sherpur District(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Fenshe, Farhana SiddikaThis empirical study focuses the different types of abuse and neglect, health status and the causes and effects of elder abuse and neglect of the people aged 60 years and older in the rural Sribordi Upazila in sherpur district of Bangladesh. The present study attempts to find the abuse and neglect status, issues and intensity of older people. They are abused and neglected physically and psychologically, financially, treatment related issues and other issues based on their basic needs by family members and other care givers. Some of them have challenges of poverty and diseases of old age such as Asthma, hypertension, gastric, diabetics, arthritis, eye problem and fever or headache. Because of their frailty, they depend on their families and other caregivers for care and in the process are abused. Also in the absence of institutional care, adult children who are too busy to take care of their parents hire caregivers who also maltreat them. Unfortunately, the elderly are unable to challenge their abusers and have no way of reporting their abuse and so many suffer in silence. Abuse and neglect situation is very prominent in Bangladeshi society as most of the respondents were found to be neglected in different forms. For now, families continue to bear the burden of caring for their elderly members but this is increasingly difficult for them. The findings of the study should get due attention to provide secured later life of the elder people in Bangladesh and developing nation as well. We also recognize that persons, as they age, should enjoy a life of fulfillment, health, security and active participation in the economic, social, cultural and political life of their societies. We are determined to enhance the recognition of the dignity of older persons and to eliminate all forms of abuse and neglect towards them.Item NGO roles in economic empowerment of rural women in Bangladesh(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-24) Al Amin, Md.The ninth most populous country and the most densely populated of the world’s larger states. But, on behalf of a developing country, it has no opportunity to fulfill their maximum demands. As a result children are deprived of their essential needs, love-affection, and comfortable environment. In the modern world, the incidence of disadvantaged children has turned out to be a burning issue. It has agitated the minds of the politicians, thinkers, legislators, social workers, philanthropists, planners, policy makers and also conscious section of the society. The issue of disadvantaged children, due to its alarming rise, has been a widely addressed issue around the universe. In this regard the main objective of the study was to present the Survival pattern and Psycho-Social Consequences of Disadvantaged Children in Dhaka city. The study reveals that, lack of adequate nutrition, health problems, a stressful past, a transitory lifestyle, substance abuse, unlearning of learned behavior, deprivation of needs, lack of resources and opportunities, exploitation, stigmatization and so on are the common patterns of the disadvantaged children. The main reasons of being disadvantaged children are family breakdown, armed conflict, poverty, natural and man-made disasters, famine, physical and sexual abuse, exploitation by adults, dislocation through migration, urbanization and overcrowding. Often the disadvantaged children fascinated to this pattern even they are deprived. For conducting this study properly some specific objectives have been set as like as the demographic characteristics, survival pattern, their felt needs and problems, psychological perception and future plan. Millions of children throughout the world work long hours in poor and dangerous condition. The alarming news is, working children are facing many and varied poverty is the root cause for the incidence and prevalence of child labour. Child labour occurs at exploitive circumstances putting the child’s life in hazardous condition leading to child abuses. Such circumstances impede physical, mental and moral development of child. Child abuse is closely related to the social development of a country and it highly exists in countries where incidence of poverty is maximum level. The study has shown that the disadvantaged children have numerous negative consequences. It discloses that, these kinds of children are being hampered in physical also in psychological development. They do not get good behavior and well manner from so called civilized people. Children are in higher risk for a comprehensive range of emotional and behavioural problems including depression, poor school performance, low self esteem and physical health complacence. This study also uncovered that the government provides necessary supports to disadvantaged children in a limited way and some NGOs are providing shelter assistance to survive them. Eventually it has been unveiled that, there should take more initiative for the advancement of disadvantaged children with the best caution.Item Living with Schizophrenia: A Phenomenological Study of People with Schizophrenia Living in the Family(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-28) Ahmed, HasnainHealth includes physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing of individual. Normal mental health is the ability of an individual to function normally, adjust with his/her environment and contribute to the society satisfactorily. As it is important to recognize normal mental health of an individual, it is also important to recognize abnormal mental health. The purpose of this current thesis paper is to investigate and understand the psycho-social conditions of people living with schizophrenia in the family. Case Study based on interpretative phenomenological analysis of phenomenological qualitative research method is the basic method of this current study paper. Because this proposed study requires in-depth information of the psycho-social conditions of people living with schizophrenia in family. The National Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (NIMH) has considered as the study area. There are fifteen cases have taken to analysis the data. The result of this current study paper shows schizophrenia is not only a problem for individual but also it has a great negative effect on his or her family members’ individual, group or social life. The greatest burden on patients and family members of patients is the financial cost to the family. This can include treatment costs, transport to appointments, the cost of hiring a carer and adapting their home environment. The schizophrenic patients create disruption in daily routine activities, in leisure time, in interaction or family relationships, education and work, and also affect the physical and mental health of other caregivers or family members. ShahinurBangladesh is over populated and developing country. Filling up all demand of the huge population is almost very difficult alone government. But government has signed up millennium development goals that are not possible for without support all. Various NGO come in front line to address the desired goals and for developing all phases of the nation at present GO and NGO work together. A growing number of NGOs in rural Bangladesh are reaching out to a vast multitude of poor women with various finance plus programs and collateral-free credit programs either by integrating them with their preexisting social welfare programs or by adding the welfare programs, thus providing a comprehensive range of services including vulnerable relief, consciousness-raising, functional literacy training, health services and group formation. It has been argued that the provision of such an integrated range of socioeconomic services not only reinforces the social and economic well-being of the poor women but also empowers them. In this paper I explore how the NGOs work in the rural area for developing ultra poor people especially women empowering. It has been also searched to see the changing pattern after engaging in NGOs in the rural area. The developments processes have been found out by discussion with twenty qualitative cases on the basis of poverty reduction theory. All cases have been selected purposefully that the selected are Jamalpur district in Dhaka division. This district has been selected for seemed undeveloped and all program of BRAC are being run. Here the sustainable livelihood framework is to be used to find out their real scenario. In the finding the basic programs and plus program are seen as the developmental tools and by these tools how much improved come out especially food security, health, education, empowering and after all social status. In the finding generally women's empowerment and improvement in all phase of their life are found to be significantly and positively associated with NGO membership and residence in an NGO program area. This Significant positive relationship of women is that contribute vital rules for improving their conditions. Comparing their before and after conditions it is found that most of the women have become self dependent and after all empowered more. Their consciousness have been dramatically changed that influence their work and mental set up. All of them now are more conscious about their health and right on everyday lives. So they always try to be neat and clean and become healthy. Whereas they were spiritually confined in their mind and obviously in their home now that scenario has been developed by the action of NGO socialization programs. BRAC is multidimensional services oriented NGO, in where most of the necessary services may be found for all vulnerable people as well as women. In the present study about twenty case studies are deeply discussed for knowing their changing pattern. After discussion it has been known that their all kind of recourses have been improved by connected with BRAC. Now they know how they should live in a sound family life because they got various training on various issues for instance neat and clean, keeping food fresh long time, sanitations, income generating programs, awareness of their right and becoming empowering. BRAC provide a wide range services for women about health. Women can get treatment about maternal and others gynecology services with others common services for all. So they are now more healthy found in the studies. In past time, it is known by finding that most of the women were unaware about their conditions and rights but after engaging with BRAC their life style are being improved gradually day by day, because in a family having not only male earner but also female earner earn more. So their financial capacities have increased more than the previous time. Another side of finding that whenever a women was generally insulted in the society and family now by earning money working in home or outside it has been turned to respect, at present women may get support to go outside and becoming independent on their wishes. Finally it is easy to say that NGO finance plus services make women empowered in all phases of life. They go mentally support from BRAC or other NGOs. On the basis of these NGOs they make their dreams gloriously to go ahead in golden future. And finally I gather some recommendation of beneficiary that they feel more for their secured future. They have no more demand but a common recommendation of all that they feel work place that may NGOs build and improve. Now they know that whenever they can earn more their all phase of live will be secured.Item A study on the work place environment in garment industry: Challenges and opportunities(University of Dhaka, 2014-04-29) Nasir Uddin, MuhammadThe Study is conducted to explore ‘The Work place Environment in Garment Industry: Challenges and Opportunities’. AnwarPrediction of some studies on global warming and climate change delineate that global warming could bring drastic change in nature and extent of natural disasters. Many areas of the globe will be severely affected by various types of natural disasters. Hence, experts in disaster management, international aid agencies and other stakeholders emphasized that disaster events should be faced with proper plans and programs where participation of the affected people, both male and female, should be ensured. In such a situation, the present study is an attempt to analyze gender issues in disaster management practices embedded in rural society ofBangladesh with specific reference to flood. It identifies the nature of problems faced by the flood victims, and explores the indigenous mechanisms adopted by the people at household level and roles of other stakeholders to combat the flood situation. It examines the nature of people’s gender-specific participation in disaster management activities and explores the factors constructing their responses to flood. It also examines whether women of the flood affected area are merely passive victims of flood or their problems are addressed properly and their roles are considered as an important contribution in managing natural disaster event like flood. In achieving the defined objective and responding to above-mentioned question, a mixed method approach was followed in this study. Data were collected from 408 samples, of whom 204 were men and 204 were women, selected by using mixed method sampling procedure. A survey with face to face interview was conducted. Primary data were also collected through focus group discussions(FGDs), and non-participantand direct observations to increase the validity of data through triangulation. Data were also collected from key informants to supplement the survey data. However, both qualitative and quantitative data analysis approaches were followed to analyze the collected data. From the findings, it appears that problems faced by the flood victims and strategies adopted to combat the situation are gender identical. Flood affects women more severely than men because of their gender-specific needs and responsibilities that become much more difficult to perform during flood. Although GAs and NGOs provide some services in addressing women’s problems that are not sufficient compared to their needs. However, data indicate that women’s participation in disaster management activities and decision-making process is constrained by prevalent gendered norms. But it is important to mention that despite the existing barriers, sprung from the gendered norms of rural Bangladesh, a significant number of women are found to participatein training and awareness-building programs. Consequently, the study investigates which factors influence their participation. The study finds that women’s participation is associated with socioeconomic factors such as age, educational qualification, household income, and organizational involvement. It appears that the male members of the family and society do not simply dominate women by assigning additional workload to them during and in the aftermath of floods rather they acknowledge their (women’s)rolesas a valuable contribution in combating flood-induced problems. It indicates the social transformation of power-based hierarchical relationship with reciprocity and mutuality as their contribution was not recognized earlier. However, GAs and NGOs provide various types of services for preparedness, response to and recover from flood induced disasters that indicate the GA-NGO partnership in every phase of disaster management. But the services are confined to distributing relief items, and constructing and repairing kancha roads and other infrastructure. None of the organizations are found to organize the flood-affected community and assess the needs, strengths and weaknesses of the community before or after floodsfor adopting a risk management plan for better adaptation of the flood victims. It indicates that the GA-NGO collaboration in Bangladesh yet achieved the goal of shifting disaster management paradigm from conventional emergency response to disaster risk management. But it is on way to achieve the defined goals as GAs and NGOs have already adopted and implemented some programs in accordance with the philosophical notion of Alternative Perspective of disaster management. In addition, although majority of the flood-affected people of the study area receive GA-NGO support services finally they follow indigenous strategies such as selling assets, receiving assistance and borrowing from non-institutional sources such as friends, relatives and neighbors, changing eating behavior and occupation and so on to combat the situation created by flood.
