Item Design and implementation of an aerial surveillance unit using wireless communication scheme(Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur-1704, Bangladesh, 2012-10-15) Islam, Riasat Siam; Hussain, Nafis; Ibrahim, Ismail BinIn recent times, a wide variety of applications for Aerial Surveillance are being introduced. This project has been aimed to design and implement an Aerial Surveillance Unit that will be used for further research on applications of Aerial Surveillance to traffic management, crime management, pollution control, protection and security. The preliminary prototype will consist of a camera device that will provide live video feed at the remote end and the complete system will be teleoperated. The main control system consists of ATmega2560, for the surveillance system we have used a low power serial camera, the secured communication system consists of a Wi-Fi router connected to Arduino Ethernet Shield, the flight mechanism is accomplished using a high rpm bldc motor and servo motors has been used to control lift, yaw and landing. The surveillance mechanism had worked successfully receiving video at 640x 480 and 320x 240 resolutions. Montasir; Yahya, Sarder Mohammad; Navid, Ehteshamul HaqueBangladesh is a riverine country which is dependent mainly on water for various major purposes such as agriculture, industrialization, urbanization etc. Water demand analysis is an important process to manage water efficiently in Bangladesh in context of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM). Often conflicts arise among the upstream and downstream water user particularly for a water stressed catchment which can be resolved through IWRM. Decision Support Systems (DSS) can provide effective tools for water allocation, supply and demand analysis. This research used Water Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP) as a DSS to evaluate the current water management scenario. WEAP provides a seamless integration of both the physical hydrology of the region and water management infrastructure that governs the allocation of available water resources to meet the different water needs. It is a priority driven software, employs priority based optimization algorithm as an alternative to hierarchal rule based logic that uses a concept of Equity Group to allocate water in time of inefficient supply. There is need for optimization of Lakkhya River basin-Demra catchment resources future need of its population. Shitalakkhya or Lakkhya is one of the major rivers in our country which has a big influence on Narayanganj area which is one of the industrial as well as agricultural centres of Dhaka city. The study is related to applicability and prospects of WEAP Software as Decision Support System (DSS) tool for water demand analysis in Bangladesh. In this project we use the Microcontroller AT89s52 from the ATMEL corp. The AT89s52 is a low power; high performance CMOS 8-bit microcontroller with 4Kbytes of Flash programmable and erasable read only memory (EPROM) .The device is manufactured using Atmel’s high density nonvolatile memory technology and is compatible with the industry standard MCS-51 instruction set and pin out. The on-chip Flash allows the program memory to be reprogrammed in-system or by a nonvolatile memory programmer. By combining a versatile 8-bit CPU with Flash on monolithic chip, the Atmel At89s52 is a powerful microcomputer which provides a highly-flexible and cost effective solution to many embedded control applications.Item Study of Photovoltaic/Thermal Solar Energy Systems(Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur-1704, Bangladesh, 2012-10-15) Saifullah, Khaled; Nael, Mohammed; Shehada, WaelAiming the improvement of usage of solar thermal energy PV modules is widely used throughout the world. Due to the lack of desired level efficiency the numerous researches are carried out to escalate the output of PV modules one of the form of developed PV modules is PV/T solar system. The temperature of PV module increases while absorbing solar radiation causing the decrease of electrical output after certain level. The hybrid Photovoltaic/Thermal (PV/T) solar system enhances the output of PV module facility the harvest of both thermal and electrical energy using the same solar radiation absorbed by the same surface area. In this experiment the design of PV/T dual system is developed, using both air and water circulation as heat extraction medium modifying the air channel. The shape of painted black ribbed surfaces at the bottom of air channel has been used as trapezoidal, Saw tooth backward ,Saw tooth forward and Flat plate as reference. The capacity of all set up is similar and having same dimensions. The process of natural convection is applied to circulate the air and water to increase the system efficiency. Mukib; Ibrahim, TouheedThe thesis work is a collaboration between Islamic University of Technology and the leading cellular operator of Bangladesh, Grameenphone Ltd. (Telenor) and aims to provide a thorough technological analysis and business case comparison for different migration paths to the next generation technology for the operator. There has been a tremendous growth in service quality and competition among the cellular operators and a continuous demand for network up gradation to a better and efficient cellular technology. Worldwide 3G networks roll out began since 2000 to cater the ever increasing data demand for mobile broadband solution. But unfortunately in Bangladesh, due to regulatory issues, 3G technology couldn’t have been implemented till now. After so many years, The Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has finished all the required ground works and is expected to arrange a spectrum frequency auction in Q1 of 2013 where in total 5 concessions will be allocated in 2.1 Ghz band, 10 MHz each. Each concession will be a technology neutral one. All the cellular operators of the country are expected to bid on that auction including Grameenphone. Technology neutrality allows the operator to choose and deploy the technology best suited for their business. Till now (October 2012), the next generation technology LTE has been successfully rolled out in 105 networks. So, whether to deploy 3G or go for the next generation technology LTE bypassing 3G/UMTS remains a question any operator, in this case Grameenphone. Tawfiq; Masud, Muhammad AtiqueLong Term Evolution (LTE) supports mobility using cell reselection and handover processes. The parameters affecting the time to trigger cell reselection and handover are scaled for high mobility users. The present method allows to vary the scaling in a very few steps. A novel method is proposed in the paper which can vary the scaling with more granularities. The signal quality fluctuates significantly with user speed in the conventional method but the proposed method can satisfactorily stabilize the signal quality. The proposed method allows optimized settings for scaling based on the scenario.Item Storage Volume and Reliability of Rainwater Harvesting in the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh Using a Daily Water Balance Model(Department of Civil and Environment Engineering, Islamic University of Technology(IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Billah, Md. Solaiman; Islam, Shoaib Rafique AlScarcity of fresh water has become a thing of concern around the world. Now, in developing countries this necessity has become a priority to be addressed like never before. Having population on the up rise in one hand and declining of fresh water resources on the other, necessity of finding an alternative source of fresh water has become the foremost priority in the world, let alone developing countries. Rainwater is one of the purest water sources on earth and harvesting rainwater has been found to be the most sustainable method of collecting fresh water. In developing countries like Bangladesh rainwater harvesting can provide an effective alternative source of fresh water, especially in the coastal areas where fresh water is scarce due to salinity in the ground water and surface water. These areas have a lot of rainfall that can be used for household and drinking purposes. Although agriculture and industrial water demand may not be fully satisfied by rainwater, drinking and household purposes may use rainwater without any question. But not too many studies have been conducted regarding this. People in this region although are using this technology but the tank sizes are not determined based upon their demand. For the purpose of storage volume and reliability analysis of rainwater harvesting in the coastal areas of Bangladesh a daily water balance model was obtained. Three daily rainfall data; Dry, Wet and Average year condition was used for developing the design curves and the reliability analysis. For the conduction of reliability analysis, catchment area and demand was increased and the results were observed from a spreadsheet. The analysis was done for household water demand only and for that reason a family of 6 members was selected as a typical family. A co-efficient factor of 0.9 was used in all these cases. In brief for a six person household scenario, almost 96% reliability can be achieved by a catchment area of 40 m² and a tank volume of 500 to 5000 liters in an average year condition. For a wet year condition almost iii 80% reliability can be achieved by a catchment area of 40 m² and a tank volume of 500 to 5000 liters. And for, dry years 73% reliability can be achieved for the similar condition. The analysis confirmed that rainwater can effectively meet the needs of the people in this region. More studies must be conducted on this matter but for now, it can be said that, rainwater harvesting can be more efficiently undertaken to solve the fresh water scarcity problem in the coastal areas of Bangladesh.Item Study and construction of a single person fuel efficient light weight vehicle and the feasibility of biogas as an alternative fuel(Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE),Islamic University of Technology(IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Rabbani, G. Faced with the threat of depletion fossil based fuel and the negative effects of using fossil based fuel; global warming, sea level rise, climate change etc, the world over is looking at ways to reduce both our dependency on fossil fuels and reduce our carbon foot print. This project is such an endeavour. In this project, the construction of a vehicle is done keeping in mind the need to reduce the weight of the vehicle design and also reduce the dependency on fossil fuel (petrol in this case) by conducting a study to research the potentials of biogas to run this vehicle. The project was carried out in two phases, with the construction of the vehicle in one phase and the production of biogas using cow dung in IUT as the second phase.Item Study on Water Uses Pattern in an Urban Slum of Dhaka City(2012-11-15) Rabbi, MD Atai; Parvez, MD. MamunSlum population has largely increased in Bangladesh over the last three decades along with growth and expansion of cities and towns. It creates additional pressure on the infrastructure and water resources. Rapid urbanization caused severe pressure on urban housing and public services. Access to safe water for drinking should be available to every human being, now and in the future. Water supply facilities in terms of quality and quantity are almost necessary for assessing the living environment of the slum. But slum facilities are very much unsatisfactory for them due to lack of proper water supply and sanitation system. As a result, majority of population in Bangladesh suffer from different kinds of water borne diseases that aggravate in their poverty situations. That’s why, essential goal of the study is to investigate of water supply facility. This report presents water uses pattern in an urban slum of Dhaka city. The investigation of respondents’ characteristics, different available water sources, water quality and physical properties of water, health, hygiene and environmental condition are all included. During the study period, data and information were collected by questionnaire survey at Korail slum. During this study 170 participants were surveyed from the study area. The arranged and sorted out data has been correlation by Microsoft excel. Water usage rates are different for various sources. In case of drinking purpose, 69% people use tap water, 3% people use bottle water and 28% people use well water. For cooking purpose, 69% people use tap water, 3% people use bottle water and 23%people use well water. 125 people said they drink 0-15 glasses of water daily and 45 people said they drink 15-30 glasses of water daily. For water treatment purposes, 15% people use boiling water, 3% people use water purification tablet, 9% people use filter and 77% people don’t use any treatment. Showing any type of color in water is 45% and 55% water don’t show any color. 45% people said that, Cost of water is 100-125 taka per month for a family, 51% people said that cost of water is 125-150 taka per month for a family. The amount of diarrhea affected people is 48% from the surveyed, cholera affected people is 21%, and 29% people said that water borne disease don’t affect them. The study is aimed to motivate the slum living people to use safe treated water and grow awareness among them.Item Designing a Single Passenger Car: a three-wheeler(Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE),Islamic University of Technology(IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Barrie, Alusine; Aziz, Mohammed AbdoThe world automobile industry had experienced near constant growth through to the mid-1980’s. The transition from horse carriages to automobiles brought about uncertainty over the development of the product during the industry’s infant years. As the automobile evolved, demand for automobiles soared at different points in time throughout the world. However, as the price of gasoline continues to climb and the consequences of unabated gas consumption become direr, the benefits of alternatives to single passenger car transport are becoming more obvious. Aside from reducing their carbon footprints, commuters who utilize alternative transports also save money and regain time lost concentrating on driving by utilizing the many different services available. Furthermore, those who are either too old to drive safely or are disabled may specifically benefit from SPV - Single passenger vehicle. With skyrocketed fuel prices, we need a more efficient mode of transportation. The SPV is the future vehicle. It has high mpg and low cost. With three wheels instead of four it is like a hybrid of an automobile and a motorcycle. The aptera is an example of three wheel SPV (single passenger vehicle) and it gets 330mpg.Item An Intelligent GIS Based Physical Model for Improvement of Urban Traffic System(Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur-1704, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Islam, Md. Tamim; Rahman, Murshid-Bin-This is a thesis on a system which will be able to sense the traffic situation of a road; and with its prior knowledge of neural network it will be able to predict the possibility of traffic congestion so that a better decision can be taken by the authority. The number of vehicles coming from residential, industrial or restricted area will also be taken into consideration to get a better response at the time of prediction. With the help of neural network a model for the entire possible scenario of congestion is trained and this learning has helped to provide the output scenario for any given situation. The output of the system will be the percentage occupation of the road or congestion depending on which authority will take the wise decision to remove the congestion. This can also compare the current situation of different roads to learn the percentage of congestion. Then if the information of the traffic situation is made available through internet then general people can get the idea of congestion and avoid the busy roads to select an alternative free one. Government agencies will be able to take decisions like where to construct new roads, install traffic lights etc. if there is authentic information regarding the behavior of traffic in different parts of the day. DelwarWhen people are unable to walk properly due to old age or as a result of some accident or paralysis due to stroke they may often lose their ability to control their movement and means to travel from one place to another.The prime objective of this research was to develop a prototype system which can provide mobility assistance to individuals.This thesis investigates the method of locomotion via a wheelchair which is controlled using input from a joystick and is analyzed via a microcontroller and out drives the motor. This thesis also consider the design consideration of a simple, low cost battery driven wheelchair where the control is achieved using a microcontroller. Two dc motors are differentially driven using PWM signal from microcontroller which provide easy control over speed and direction. There are further proposed design consideration which includes self-sustaining power supply using PV cells with the wheelchair and also long distance wireless control and use of sensors for autonomous control of the wheelchair.Item Remote Data Acquisition System Using FPGA(Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur-1704, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Bustam, Husnain Al; Rahman, Nafiz Ur; Ferdous, Ibna IdrishSingle cost-efficient VLSI chip nowadays turns out to be a solution to microelectronic design problems. In these designs embedded system architectures are used which are comprised of software programmable components accompanied with dedicated hardware processing modules integrated into the VLSI chip [1]. Also emerging new designs which are based on heterogeneous embedded system architectures, offer flexible low-cost design in a short design cycle, integrating multiple software programmable components together with dedicated hardware components into a single cost-efficient VLSI chip. With the help of new technology it has now become possible not only to introduce programmability in these single chip architectures but also maintaining most of the advantages of customized VLSI solutions [1].Once some applications which were too difficult for computing hardware, now with impressive advances in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) technology are becoming more feasible[2]. Utilizing the prebuilt logic blocks and programmable routing resources engineers and designers now configure FPGAs (FPGA stands for Field Programmable Gate Array) to implement custom hardware. The configuration of FPGA is specified with the help of hardware description language. FPGA technology is now adopting among the engineers scientists at all levels of expertise as higher level tools evolve to deliver the fruits of reprogrammable silicon [2]. The “Remote Data Acquisition System Using FPGA” has been entirely implemented on the FPGA of the Spartan-3E Starter Kit. DAQs are complex systems which are the basis for building and monitoring tools that enable the supervision of local and remote systems. Data is transferred from the data loggers via radio telemetry, cellular, serial ports, Ethernet, satellite peripherals etc. The mobility and flexibility of the data loggers and sensors make the applications of this technology limitless. In everywhere we can see the magical touch of science and engineering in the present world which enables human being to have the maximum comfort and security of life. In that contrast our developed data acquisition system is such a device that could be used for biomedical applications, nuclear research, or data acquisition from such a place where the presence of human being is risky as well as harmful, for the example in the radioactive areas. The vi developed system will communicate through the SMSC LAN83C185 Ethernet PHY with remote pc via internet. Of course the Ethernet port of the Spartan-3E starter kit has to be interfaced with the personal computers as well as that pc should be connected with the remote pc through internet. The configuration of the PCs used in this R and D work- Intel® Desktop Board DG41WV mother board which has LAN support Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbits/sec) LAN subsystem using the Realtek* RTL8111D Gigabit Ethernet Controller and Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor. The data transfer rate of the Ethernet port of Spartan-3E starter kit is 10/100 Mbits/Sec. So our developed system could transfer data at the rate of 10/100 Mbits/Sec. National instrument DAQ interfaced with the ADC of the Spartan-3E starter kit to acquire analog signal from the outer world. The ADC process the digital data to FPGA, therefore those data is processed through the SMSC LAN83C185 Ethernet PHY to the personal computer of the concerned person who intended to acquire and send that data through internet in a remote place. Sabbir; Lodi, Farzad KhanStructures suffer significant inelastic deformation under a strong earthquake and dynamic characteristics of the structure change with time, so investigating the performance of a structure requires inelastic analytical procedures accounting for these features. Inelastic analytical procedures help to understand the actual behavior of structures by identifying failure modes and the potential for progressive collapse. Among the various inelastic procedures, the inelastic time history analysis is the most accurate method to predict the force and deformation demands at various components of the structure and hence, the application of inelastic time history analysis to evaluate the seismic performance of Secretariat Clinic Building located at the Secretariat of Government of Bangladesh, Dhaka is the focus of this thesis. Due to the unavailability of any strong ground motion record applicable for Dhaka city in the literature, artificial time history record generated based on response spectrum of Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC,1993) has been used for analysis purpose in nonlinear finite element package, SeismoStruct-V5.2.2 (2011). The analysis reveals that the case study building possesses much greater stability in the longitudinal direction compared to the shorter direction in terms of energy dissipation capacity. It was also observed that storey sway mechanism develops in the bottom and top floors in both the directions under the input artificial time history records which may be attributed to the open ground floor for parking purposes and reduced steel area in columns at top floor from gravity load considerations.Item Review of Renewable Energy Projects in Bangladesh(Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering (MPE),Islamic University of Technology(IUT), Board Bazar, Gazipur, Bangladesh, 2012-11-15) Daiyan, Md. All the developed countries in the world have the adequate power generation. But in the developing and third world countries like Bangladesh is facing the deficiency of power generation which is a big barrier in the overall development of this country. The main source of energy in Bangladesh is natural gas. Due to continuous use of this source it is likely to be depleted by the year 2020. As we are on the verge of exhaust-ing fossil fuels, we require some other promising energy source to fuel our daily needs. Solar energy is the one of best option for the primary source of energy in the future, as it is renewable, eco-friendly and safe to use. An Intelligent Solar Tracker is a device (onto which solar panels are fitted) which tracks the motion of the sun across the sky ensuring that the maximum amount of sun-light strikes the panels throughout the day. The Intelligent Solar Tracker will attempt to navigate to the best angle of exposure of light from the sun. The challenge remains to maximize the capture of the rays from the sun for conversion into electricity. This paper presents the steps of implementing a single-axis solar tracking controller. This is done so that rays from the sun fall perpendicularly unto the solar panels to maximize the capture of the rays by pointing the solar panels towards the sun and following its path across the sky,hence increasing electricity and efficiency.
