Item BIOMASS BRIQUETTE-AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE OF ENERGY IN BANGLADESH(2015-06-23) Faisal Ashraf, Lt Syed (E), BN; Shohel, Abid Mahmud; Hill Galib, AshadullahBiomass briquette is a good example of renewable energy. It is a dense form of bio-fuel and has gained a large popularity in poor developing countries as an alternative cooking fuel. Within a short period it has replaced traditional fuels for its availability and high acceptance in user level. The aim of this thesis is to make some biomass briquette and compare their calorific values and other properties with available briquettes in the market. Four species of briquettes are produced for this study from sawdust, coal and rice husk which are bonded with paper. All of the briquettes are produced in home with hand operation. Out of four species first species contains only saw dust and bonded by paper, second spices contains saw dust and coal and is bonded by paper, third species contains saw dust and rice husk and is bonded by paper, fourth spices contains saw dust, rice husk, coal and is bonded by paper. Combustion related properties namely percentage of volatile matter, percentage of ash content, percentage of fixed carbon and calorific value of the briquettes is determined. The study shows that briquette produced from sample of Saw dust and Rice husk combination bonded with paper had the highest calorific value of 24.1364 MJ/Kg and its’ calorific value is also highest among market available briquettes. Since the aim of briquetting is to produce briquette that will serve as a good source of fuel and support combustion, the best briquette is produced when sawdust was mixed with Rice husk. So this thesis paper might help in production of briquette and also might encourage bringing new briquetting technology.
