Item FABRICATION OF A LOW TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL STIRLING ENGINE(DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, 2009-12) ALAM, MD. KHURSHED; ISLAM, MD. ARAFAT; UDDIN, MD. AHSANIn recent years, understanding of the stirling engine has enjoyed considerable growth. Research and development on the stirling engine has steady progressed, and many new insights, inventions, and potential applications have many discovered and explored. One of the most exciting recent developments is the so called “low temperature differential” stirling engine. This new type of stirling is capable of running on very small differences in temperature between the hot and cold sides, or better to say, between the warm and cool sides. Low temperature differential stirling engine have been built that run on differentials ranging from just under 100°C (180°F) down to an incredible 1/2°C (1°F). This means that stirling engines can now utilize low grade heat sources for their operation ranging from passive solar or geothermal energy to industrial process waste heat. Weather low temperature differential stirling engines can be put to practical use is an open question and still the subject of ongoing research and development work is being carried out worldwide at universities, government laboratories, and in private sector. The objective of this project was to examine the history and development of Stirling Engines and through the process of examination, take the concepts and fundamental Characteristics of Stirling engines, and build a working model. The ultimate goal of this Project was to create a reproduction of James Senft’s N-92 Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engine and also built another N-92 model stirling engine with rescaling of its size and then analyze their performance, make some comparisons between two models and also fine out various difficulties of this fabrication technique.Item Performance of Wireless DS-CDMA System with Fading(Military Institute of Science and Technology, 2009-12) Sultana, Nigar; Rahman, HimikaThis paper develops and models a DS-CDMA wireless network by simulation. It present an over view of CDMA transmission systems as compared to other multiple access schemes. The channel parameters and channel conditions are varied and the performance studied. The investigation of spreading, modulation and coding is carried out. BPSK modulation techniques are used to see the performance of the system when each is used. The BER is used as a tool to monitor the system output as SNR is varied. The AWGN channel is used in the simulation. The simulation starts with a single user and later the number of users is increased and the results evaluated. The final results are compared to the theoretically calculated results and finally concluded.Item STUDY OF SCATTERING PARAMETERS OF WAVEGUIDE DEVICES USING COMSOL MULTYPHYSICS(Military Institute of Science and Technology, 2009-12) Ahmed, Tanjila; Islam, Samiul; Islam, ShajidS-parameters refer to the scattering matrix. The concept was first popularized around the time that Kaneyuke Kurokawa of Bell Labs wrote his 1965 IEEE article Power Waves and the Scattering Matrix. It helped that during the 1960s, Hewlett Packard introduced the first microwave network analyzers. The scattering matrix is a mathematical construct that quantifies how RF energy propagates through a multi-port network. The S-matrix is what allows us to accurately describe the properties of incredibly complicated networks as simple "black boxes. One difficulty associated with transmission parameters is that in a practical high-frequency circuit it is extremely difficult to obtain the perfect opencircuit and short-circuit conditions required to make good measurements. The Sparameter method circumvents the open/short difficulties by always connecting both ports to transmission lines with stable, well-defined impedances. To the extent that such a test setup better represents the actual working conditions of your circuit, the S-parameter method generates a more accurate model. These are the reasons why this thesis topic is chosen. In this thesis paper, an idea about what is S-parameters, it’s classification and usefulness is described elaborately. Then here the mathematical and network based analysis is done which helps to know about S-parameters more accurately. Here Sparameters are expressed with mathematical equations. Examples are being done by the help of the software named FEMLAB. FEMLAB is a powerful, interactive environment for modeling and solving scientific and engineering problems based on partial differential equations. It has helped to know the detailed status of waves in different types of waveguides. These detailed statuses are being described at the end of this thesis.Item Effects of changing RCS and Antenna Array pattern Radar performance(Department of Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering (EECE), 2011-12) Major Mohammad Ali, Khan; Afia Binte, Rahman; Jannatul Fardous, Popy; Hossam-E-Haider, Wg Cdr Dr. MohammedRadio Detection and Ranging (RADAR) is totally a matter of technology and engineering with immense practical consequences. Because of radar, astronomers can map the contours of far-off planets, physicians can see images of internal organs, meteorologists can measure rain falling in distant places, air travel is hundreds of times safer than travel by road. Due to its reasonably larger practical applications, the mono-static pulse radar system is the main focus of our thesis. The main goal of this thesis was to carry out a detail study of the basic nature of the monostatic pulse radar system with an aim to find out its performance under changing radar cross section and antenna configurations. In this regard, various radar parameters were taken into consideration, their effects on radar performance were simulated and best option was identified. Thereafter, the significant affect of shape changes of elementary static target cross sections were studied with a small introduction to complex target RCS. The significance of operating frequency and aspect angle on radar detection range has also been illustrated. The effect of earth and atmosphere on the wave propagation has been calculated in order to provide a reliable prediction method under the adverse atmospheric effects. An elaborate and exhaustive effort is taken to examine various antenna patterns to suggest the best possible array antenna configuration for better radar performance. In this regard, various correlated mathematical equations were taken into consideration; those were simulated using MATLAB to provide relevant plots for study. The expression of the Signal to Noise plus ICI ratio (SNIR) and the Bit Error Rate (BER) for the OFDM system is derived. SNIR and BER for various system parameters are evaluated. This thesis is aimed at analyzing the available methods for solving a system of linear equations of the form n x n. Using a couple of iterative and/or direct methods, implement a program for these methods that could be run for different dimension size n of system of linear equation . At the end, a graph can be plotted with time taken for execution of a method considered V/s dimension size n. In this contribution, we develop a solution that does not involve direct matrix inversion. The iterative nature of our approachallowsforadistributedmessage-passingimplementationofthesolutionalgorithm. We present test results which show that our solver achieves good results, both in terms of numerical accuracy as well as computing time. Furthermore, even very large systems (n≤ 1000) can be solved given a cluster with sufficient resources. Eventually, with the up rising demand of energy, the span of reserved petroleum started to reduce. Throughout the world, price of the petroleum products started to rise rapidly. At this stage researchers started to think about an alternative option as the source of energy. Thus the concept of solar energy came. At present Solar energy is termed as one of the most effective and reliable Renewable energy sources (RESs). The rapid evolution of renewable energy sources during the last two decades resulted in the installation of many solar power units. The production of electricity from renewable energy technologies is mounting much faster than the electric power supply as a whole. Solar power is among the fastest emergent segments of the renewable energy market. Centralized solar power is produced on large farms and fed into an electrical grid. Globally, gridconnected solar capacity increased an average of 60 percent annually from 2004 to 2009, faster than any other energy source. Today, however, solar power still accounts for less than one-half of one percent of the world’s power output. This solar power can be utilized to conserve energy in various ways. Solar heat collector system is one of it. A good reason to use Solar Heat Collector System(SWHS) instead of conventional energy based systems, is that it offsets those greenhouse gases that would have been generated had the water been heated by electric power or natural gas.Item Bangla To English Machine Translation(Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Military Institute of Science and Technology, 2012-12) Azam Khan, Nazifa; Muntaheen, A.S.M.; Bhattacharjee, AnkurMachine Translation (MT) refers to the use of computers for the task of translating automat ically from one language to another. The differences between languages and especially the inherent ambiguity of language make MT a very difficult problem. Traditional approaches to MT have relied on humans supplying linguistic knowledge in the form of rules to transform text in one language to another. Given the vastness of language, this is a highly knowledge intensive task. Statistical MT is a radically different approach that automatically acquires knowledge from large amounts of training data. This knowledge, which is typically in the form of probabilities of various language features, is used to guide the translation process. DSS are interactive computer-based system that uses data, document, communication technologies, knowledge and model to support decision making process. In this thesis, we consider top two data mining algorithms in the research community: k-means and k-nearest neighbor (kNN). Given C = fc1; :::;cmg is a set of pre-defined categories, an initial corpus Co = fd1; :::;dsg of documents previously categorized under the same set of categories and a training set Tr = fd1; :::;dgg. This is the set of example documents observing the characteristics of which the classifiers for the various categories are induced and D = fd1; :::;dng is a set of documents to be categorized. The problem is to assign a value from f0;1g to each entry, ai j where 1 i m, 1 j n of the decision matrix. A value of 1 for ai j is interpreted as a decision to file dj under ci, while a value of 0 is interpreted as a decision not to file dj under c. A test set Te =dg+1; :::;ds will be used for the purpose of testing the effectiveness of the induced classifiers. Each document in Te will be fed to the classifiers and a measure of classification effectiveness will be based on how often the values for the ai j’s obtained by the classifiers match the values for the cai j’s provided by the experts where cai j is the element of correct decision matrix and 1 i m , 1 j s. We implemented these two algorithms and perform cross-validation test to measure accuracy of them. It comes out that; kNN is more accurate than that of k-mean. Then we develop tracing of document-driven DSS to provide an explanation to improve the acceptance of decision makers, because decisions are based on both the inheritance among documents and acceptance of those advices for decision makers. Efficient design and implementation of wireless sensor networks has become a hot area of research in recent years, due to the vast potential of sensor networks to enable applications that connect the physical world to the virtual world. There are many characteristics which differ wireless network from wired network and these distinctions introduce the need for many different protocols of WSN at different layers i.e. Physical layer, Data Link layer, Network layer, Transport layer, Application layer. Many research works have been done on the design of low power electronic devices in order to reduce energy consumption of the sensor nodes of Wireless network. MAC protocol of Data Link layer; LEACH, DSDV, AODV, DSR of Network Layer and the standard IEEE 802.15.4 contribute to this factor in various ways. Abdul HakimThe emerging trend of deregulating power industries requires the operator to keep the transmission network congestion free when the generation companies compete to sell electricity to the distributors or wholesale purchasers. This requires the determination of various power transfer bottlenecks in the existing network. For this purpose the real-time predetermination of an index termed “Available Transfer Capability (ATC)” is required. Transfer capability of a power system also indicates how much inter area power transfer can be increased without system security violations. In case of large power systems such as that of Bangladesh, the vital information required for the planning and operation of the system are provided from the transfer capability calculations. These details provide system bottlenecks to the planners and the limits of the power transfers to the system operators. Thus power transfer bottlenecks determination of Bangladesh Power System effectively means the calculation of ATC of the system. In order to provide an effective and in depth knowledge of ATC determination, various calculation methods have been discussed in the thesis, and two of them, namely Repeated Power Flow Method and Path Dependent Network Flow model have been applied for the actual calculation procedure. As working with a large number of data makes the analysis process difficult and cumbersome, so only data from the Eastern Grid of Bangladesh Power System have been used in this research. The fact that the Eastern Grid contains about 76% of the total generation capacity, has also worked as incentive. Additionally, comparison of the results obtained from both calculation techniques are provided, which gives an in depth idea about the system capabilities and transmission bottlenecks along with directions and suggestions for improvements and future works needed in this area.Item DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF BERNOULLIS APPARATUS(DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, MILITARY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE &TECHNOLOGY, 2012-12) ENAMUL HASAN KAMAL, SYED; NAJMUS SAKIB, MD.; REZANUR ISLAM, SK.Bernoulli’s apparatus is one of the simple but fundamental experimental devices of fluid mechanics. With this set up anyone could be able to verify physically verify the Bernoulli’s equation which is the foundation of Fluid Mechanics and base of fluid flow problem. It will help the undergraduate students to understand the basic concepts of fluid friction, pressure head, velocity head and many others related terminology about the static and dynamic fluid flow. Designing, characterizing and constructing such a device is surely a challenging job which is definitely a result of combination of merits and hard work. In most of the cases this devices are imported from outside the country for experimental purpose and basic lab works. But by using our engineering knowledge and true effort we can construct such device rather than importing them. On the other hand by constructing such complex structure,students will be able to be oriented with many important aspects about construction of engineering apparatus. Because the size of the test suite may be very large, testers are interested in detecting faults in the systemasearlyaspossibleduringtheretestingprocess. Regressiontestselectiontechniques attempt to reduce the cost of regression testing by selecting a subset of a program’s existing testsuite. Inthispaperwehavebrieflydiscussedtwooftheselectiontechniquesandchoose the safe algorithm technique. The previous researches indicate that safe regression test selectioncanbecost-effective,butthatitscostsandbenefitsvarywidelybasedonanumberof factors. Inordertocarrythroughtheregressiontestingquicklyandeffectively,wehaveproposed a regression testing approach from a large test suite using hybrid technique based on safeselectionalgorithmandprioritizationbasedoncostcriterion. Weexaminedsomeprioritizationstrategiesanddevelopourproposedalgorithmtoimprovetherateoffaultdetection for web applications. The disaster in the Dhaka City may claim thousands of lives due to Earthquake. It is said if survivors are found and rescued earlier the numbers of victims will be lower. There is no end to the number of lives lost as the result of such disasters as landslides, collapsed tunnels and avalanches. The microwave life detection system is developed for the search and rescue of victims trapped under the rubble of collapsed building during the earthquake or other disasters. TheproposedsystemutilizesL-bandfrequencywhichisabletodetectrespiratoryandheart fluctuations. TheoperationprincipleisbasedonDopplerfrequencyshiftoftheelectromagnetic wave reflected from the buried victim. The schematic diagram of microwave Transmitting/Receiving (T/R) and clutter cancellation subsystem are included in this report. In this report various parts of a microwave life detection system such as antenna, directional coupler, and splitter has been discussed. The use of products from the market makes building robots possible at a very low-cost awakening the engineering nature of students and researchers. In this paper we present a low cost mobile robot which uses a normal android phone to guide itself. The low cost robot in volves the use of one or more cameras to transmit visual data. Motors are from battery operated. The goal for this work is to build a large set of these robots, lend them to the engineering students.Item SOLAR POWERED WHEEL CHAIR FOR PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE(Department of Electrical Electronics and Communication Engineering, Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), 2013-12) SHAFIUL ALAM, GAZI MD.; AKHTER, SELINA; MAHMUD, SALAHUDDINThis study deals with the designing of a solar-powered motor driven three wheeler chair type vehicle for physically disabled people. After a short outline on the importance of mobility for physically challenged people, the study will focus on solar energy technology; diversify utilization of solar-powered devices, techno-economic aspect of designing and constructing one solar-powered wheel chair. One of the best inventions in the medical field that helped both the elderly and the handicapped is the mobility vehicle. The fact that they are no longer depending on someone else to perform daily duties is a big step forward. This paper provides idea of currently available three-wheelers for disabled people and proposes a new improved design of a solar powered three-wheeler suitable for countries like Bangladesh. This three-wheeler is operated by solar power and suitable for outdoor use. Solar power option enables the disabled people to use it at any place, even in remote areas where there is no electricity. A general survey had been conducted on disabled people using wheel chairs and manual three-wheelers and the opinions of the experts working with the disabled people are also taken in to consideration to identify the needs and requirement for designing the solar three-wheeler. The proposed solar three-wheeler is meant to match and exceed the conventional three-wheeler’s facilities with a more intelligent and efficient design. A solar panel to produce solar electricity, a battery system for preserving electric power, an efficient motor, cushion seat, all terrain tires are used for this solar three-wheeler. Due consideration and attention is given to better maneuverability, effective use of solar energy, biomechanics and comforts, increased suspensions, all terrain traffic ability, ease of use etc. while designing this solar three-wheeler for physically disabled people of the country.Item DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF REMOTE CONTROLLED ROBOTIC ARM FOR SHIPMENT OF CHEMICALLY HAZARDOUS WASTE MATERIALS IN FACTORY(Department of Mechanical Engineering, Military Institute of Science & Technology (MIST), 2013-12) Ahmed Antu, Imran; Rahman Turza, Nahidur; Emran Hossain, Kazi Md.Every year many workers are injured, become ill or are killed because of exposure to harmful chemical substances. These incidents cause human suffering, loss of production and high medical cost. This robotic arm aims to give assistance and guidance to employers and workers to promote a safe and healthy work environment and prevent injuries. And also repetitive tasks and high accuracy have become the two contradictory needs of any industrial process. By introducing autonomous robotic applications, simple repetitive tasks can be accomplished keeping the demands of the accuracy and speed in mind. This report presents an approach mechanical system design concept and fabrication of three degrees of freedom jointed-arm robot with locally available materials, which should perform industrial task such as pick-and-placement of waste chemically hazardous material. The special feature of this robotic arm is that it can rotate on its base around 360° and a gripper system. This robotic arm has forward-backward motion and rotation on the base. These function and the movement of the arm is controlled by a lab view program via servo & DC motors, PC, motor drive IC, arduino and an Wi-Fi control module. Mechanical gripper has been built as end effector and is capable of grasping diverse objects, even under external disturbances, within own workspace of the arm possible. Control of the robotic arm assembly has been achieved successfully using two DC motors and four servo motors. By controlling these six motors the robot can achieve a total of five degrees of freedom. The arduino implements the position control on the motors. The project shows that the program allows the arduino to automatically adjust their commands to be appropriate for the arm dynamics and the task. The design aims to provide fine manipulation in performing industrial tasks, while still maintaining the simplicity of design, miniaturization, and lightness are also achieved.
