Item EFFECT OF FOLIAR APPLICATION OF IAA AND GA 3 ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN PLANT(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) NOURIN, YEASHINAA field experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during March to June, 2020 to study the Effect of Foliar Application of IAA and GA 3 on Growth and Yield of Mungbean Plant (BARI Mung-6). The experiment was consisted of two types of plant growth regulators, viz. i) Auxin (IAA- Indole acidic acid) and ii) Gibberellic acid (GA 3 ). Nine levels of foliar spray with IAA and GA 3 application viz. i) Control (T 0 ), ii) Spraying IAA @ 25 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 1 ), iii) Spraying IAA @ 50 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 2 ii ), iv) Spraying GA 3 @ 25 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 3 ), v) Spraying GA 3 @ 50 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 4 ), vi) Spraying IAA @ 25 mg/L + GA 3 @ 25 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 5 ), vii) Spraying IAA @ 25 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 6 ), viii) Spraying IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 25 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 7 ) and ix) Spraying IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L at 30 DAS (T 8 ). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The data regarding on plant height, number of leaves, number of branches were recorded both 30 days after sowing (DAS) and at harvest. The other parameters were recorded meanwhile cultivation and at the time of harvest. Results revealed that in case of morphological parameters, plant height (57.50 cm), number of leaves (17.33) plant and number of brunch (7.67) plant -1 were significantly higher in T 8 (IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L) treatment. In terms of growth characters; SPAD value (55%), days to flowering (27.33) and days to maturity (55.33) were also significantly higher in T 8 (IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L) treatment. The data regarding yield and yield attributes, number of pods plant -1 (37.66), pod length (14.99), number of seeds pod (13.78), weight of 1000- seeds (54.95g), seed yield (1.62 t ha -1 ), stover yield (1.78 t/ha), biological yield (3.74t/ha), and harvest index (37.75 %) were higher in T 8 (IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L) treatment. However, (T 0 ) untreated control (IAA 0.0 mg/L, GA 3 0.0 mg/L) showed the lowest performance in every stages. The result indicated that the plants treated with T 8 (IAA @ 50 mg/L + GA 3 @ 50 mg/L), performed better in respect of growth, yield and others yield contributing characters.Item EFFECT OF VARIETY AND ZINC FERTILIZATION ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF HYBRID RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) HASAN, MD. RAKIBThe field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from November, 2019 to May, 2020 in Boro season to find out the effect of variety and zinc application on the performance of hybrid rice. The experiment consisted of two factors as Variety (3 types) viz., V 1 – BRRI hybrid dhan2, V – BRRI hybrid dhan3 and V 3 – BRRI hybrid dhan5 and Zinc management (4 levels) viz., Zn ii 2 (control), Zn 1 – 2 kg ha -1 , Zn 2 – 4 kg ha -1 and Zn 3 – 6 kg ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (Factorial) with three of replications. Data on different growth and yield parameter of rice were recorded and significant variation was found for different treatments. Regarding varietal performance, the maximum panicle number hill -1 (17.10), panicle length (28.03 cm), grain number panicle -1 (109.45), 1000-grain weight (26.50 g), grain yield ha (6.94 t), straw yield ha -1 (8.58 t), biological yield ha -1 (15.51 t) and harvest index (44.62%) were found from the variety V . Considering Zn effect, the maximum panicle number hill -1 3 (16.33), panicle length (27.14 cm), grain number panicle -1 (108.11), 1000-grain weight (25.38 g), grain yield ha 1 -1 (6.81 t), straw yield ha (15.15 t) and harvest index (44.88%) were found from Zn -1 0 - 0 kg ha -1 (8.34 t), biological yield ha 3 (6 kg Zn ha ). In case of treatment combination of variety and zinc, the maximum panicle number hill (20.17), panicle length (29.17 cm), number of grains panicle -1 (179.74), 1000-seed weight (27.43 g), grain yield (7.76 t ha -1 ), straw yield (9.19 t ha -1 ), biological yield (16.95 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (45.78%) were found from V 3 Zn . The hybrid rice variety ‘BRRI hybrid dhan5’ with a Zn application of 6 kg ha -1 3 yielded considerably more grain than the other treatment combinations under evaluation.Item EFFECT OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SULPHUR ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF THREE RICE VARIETIES IN BORO SEASON(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) TAHSIN, SABAThe experiment was carried out at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during November 2019 to May 2020 to study the effect of sulphur on popular three BRRI released rice varieties. The experiment consisted of three rice varieties viz., V 1 (BRRI dhan88), V 2 (BRRI dhan89) and V (BRRI dhan100) in combination with four sulphur treatments viz., S 0 (control; 0 kg S ha 3 -1 ), S ), S 2 (40 kg S ha -1 ) and S 3 (50 kg S ha -1 ). The experiment was laid out in Randomized complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Among different rice varieties, V (BRRI dhan100) showed better performance on different growth parameters, but considering yield and yield contributing characters V 3 (BRRI dhan89) exhibited better performance,whereas V 1 2 (BRRI dhan88) gave the least performance. Among sulphur treatments, S 2 (40 kg S ha -1 ) gave the best results considering other treatments followed by S 3 (50 kg S ha -1 ) whereas control treatment S 0 (0 kg S ha -1 ) showed the lowest performance. In terms of combined effect of variety and sulphur treatment, V showed better results regarding yield contributing and yield characters and gave the highest number of effective tillers hill -1 (21.67), panicle length (29.87 cm), number of filled grains panicle -1 (114.80), 1000 grain weight (24.30 g), grain yield (8.57 t ha ), straw yield (9.59 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (47.16%), whereas the lowest results were recorded from V 1 S 0 . Therefore, among the treatment combinations, V 2 S (BRRI dhan89 with 40 kg S ha -1 2 ) can be considered as the best treatment combinations followed by V (BRRI dhan89 with 50 kg S ha -1 ) compared to other treatment combinations.Item EFFECT OF SOWING DATE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNG BEAN (Vigna radiata L.)(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) KHATUN, RESHMASowing time is an important agronomic factors that significantly affects plant growth development and final production. Similarly, suitable cultivar also plays an appreciable rate in final productivity. Therefore, the experiment was conducted in the research field of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from March 2020 to June 2020 to study the effect of sowing date on growth and yield of Mung bean (Vigna radiata L). This experiment consisted of three Mung bean varieties viz. V 1 = BARI Mung-5, V 2 = BARI Mung-6, V 3 = BARI Mung-7 sown on three different dates termed as treatments i. e. T 1 = 15 March 2020, T 2 = 30 March 2020, and T 3 = 15 April 2020 and different parameters were recorded. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental plot was fertilized at the rate of 40 kg/ha (Urea), 80 kg/ha (TSP), 30 kg/ha (MoP) and necessary intercultural operations were done. The data regarding plant height, number of leaves and number of branches were recorded at both 30 Days after sowing (DAS) and harvest, and the other parameters were recorded at the time of harvest only. At 30 DAS, the highest plant height (22.67 cm) was observed in V 2 when sown on T 1 and during harvest plant height was found highest (55.17 cm) in the same variety with the same treatment. At 30 DAS and harvest, the highest number of leaves (average 4.33 and 15 respectively) were obtained in V 2 when sown on T 1 . In case of number of branches, at 30 DAS and harvest, the highest number (average 2.67 and 7.67) were observed in V 2 when sown on T 1 and T 3 respectively. The variety V 3 takes longer time for maturity (66 days) and V 1 variety takes less time for maturity (55.67 days). In terms of yield and yield attributes, the highest number of pods per plant (39) were recorded in V 2 when sown onT 1 and the number of fertile seeds per pod were recorded highest (14) in V 2 when sown onT 1 . The maximum pod length (14.67 cm) was recorded in V 2 when sown on T 1 . In case of 1000- seed weight the highest value (53.18 g) was recorded in V 2 when sown on T 1 . The maximum SPAD value (55), the highest yield (1.68 t ha -1 ), maximum biological yield (3.5 t ha ), the highest Stover yield (1.88 t ha -1 ) was recorded in V 2 when sown on T 1 . Finally, the maximum Harvest Index (53.33 %) was calculated in V 2 when sown on T 1 . The results in this study indicated that the variety performed better in respect of growth, yield and others yield contributing characters’ is V 2 (BARI Mung -6) on the sowing time T 1 (15 March 2020).Item INFLUENCE OF SEEDLING AGE AND INTEGRATED NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT ON LEAF CHARACTERISTICS AND YIELD OF AROMATIC RICE (cv. BRRI dhan34)(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) SABIL, ANNIKA SALTo investigate the performance of aromatic rice (cv. BRRI dhan34) in response to seedling age and nutrient management, an experiment was carried out at the Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from July to December 2021. The experiment includes three different ages of seedlings to be transplanted viz. 30, 45, and 60 days old, and six nutrient management practices viz. control (no manures and fertilizers), recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers (RDF) (150, 97, 70, 60, and 12 kg ha urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, and zinc sulphate, respectively), 50% of RDF + cow dung @ 5 t ha -1 , 75% of RDF + cow dung @ 5 t ha ii -1 , 50% of RDF + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha -1 and 75% of RDF + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha -1 . The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed that in the case of transplanting of different aged seedlings, the highest number of tillers hill -1 (13.17), number of effective tillers hill -1 (11.53), plant height (113.34 cm), leaf area index (5.74), total grains panicle -1 (135.14), 1000- grain weight (12.45 g), grain yield (3.29 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.01 t ha -1 ), biological yield (7.30 t ha -1 ) and dry matter hill -1 (32.86 g) were recorded from transplanting 30 days old seedlings. Different levels of nutrient management showed a significant impact on most of the parameters under study. The highest plant height (115.70 cm), the maximum LAI (5.35), chlorophyll content (42.87), total dry matter hill -1 (34.02 g), number of effective tillers hill -1 (12.99), panicle length (24.63 cm), total grains panicle -1 (140.17), 1000-grain weight (12.54 g), grain yield (3.27 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.15 t ha -1 ), biological yield (7.42 t ha -1 ) and harvest index (43.03%) were also recorded in F5 (75% of RDF + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha -1 ) treatment. While considering the interaction effects between the age of seedlings and nutrient management, transplanting 30 days old seedlings along with the nutrient management of 75% of RDF + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha -1 treatment improved yield contributing parameters and provided the highest yield (3.76 t ha -1 ) of BRRI dhan34 compared to other treatment combination. So, the application of 75% of RDF + poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha -1 along with 30 days old seedlings appeared as a promising practice to obtain better performance of fine aromatic rice (cv. BRRI dhan34).Item EFFECT OF FERTILIZER DOSES ON MORPHOLOGICAL AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF MUSTARD VARIETIES(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) AKTAR, MST. RASHIDAThe experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research Farm, Dhaka during Rabi season, December 2020 to February 2021 to find out the effect of fertilizer doses on morphological and yield performance of mustard varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors - the treatment consisted of four different levels of fertilizer application viz. F 0 = Control (no fertilization), F 1 = 85% fertilization compared to recommended fertilization (204 kg ha -1 Urea, 136 kg ha xi -1 TSP, 68 kg ha MoP and 119 kg ha -1 Gypsum), F 2 = BARC recommended fertilizer dose (100%) (240 kg ha Urea, 160 kg ha -1 TSP, 80 kg ha -1 MoP and 140 kg ha -1 Gypsum) and F 3 = 115% fertilization compared to recommended fertilization (276 kg ha -1 Urea, 184 kg ha -1 MoP and 161 kg ha -1 Gypsum) and three different varieties viz. V 1 -1 -1 TSP, 92 kg ha = BARI Sarisha-9, V 2 = BARI Sarisha-14 and V 3 = BARI Sarisha-15. The experiment consisted of two factor and laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The collected data were statistically analyzed and a significant variation among the treatments was found in respect of majority of the observed parameters. The highest plant population (66.33 m -2 ) was recorded from F 3 treatment. The tallest plant was recorded from 115% fertilizer application (F 3 ). Significantly maximum branches plant -1 , dry matter weight plant -1 , siliqua plant -1 and seed siliqua -1 were recorded from F 2 and F 3 treatment with 100% and 115% fertilization, respectively. The maximum thousand seed weight (2.98 g) was recorded from V 3 (BARI Sarisha-15). The highest plant population (77.25 m ) was observed in case of BARI Sarisha-15. The tallest plant of mustard was found in case of with BARI Sarisha-15. The maximum branches plant -1 , dry matter weight plant , siliqua plant -1 and seed siliqua -1 were obtained from BARI Sarisha-14 (V 2 ). The highest yield of seed (0.95 t ha -1 ) was obtained from BARI Sarisha-14. The combinations of different fertilizer doses and varieties had significant effect on almost all the parameters. The higher yield of seed was obtained from F 2 V 2 (1.15 t ha -1 ), F 2 V 3 (1.08 t ha (1.16 t ha -1 ) treatment combination. The highest biological yield (4.02 t ha ) was obtained from F 2 V 3 and the highest harvest index was obtained from F 2 V 2 -1 -1 -1 -2 ) and F 3 (30.75%) and F 3 (29.37%) treatment combination. Considering the results, it can be concluded that both the variety BARI Sarisha-14 and BARI Sarisha-15 provided better yield than the other variety and F 2 and F 3 fertilizer dose provided better yield for most of the mustard varieties. Bari Sharisha-14 (V 2 ) with 100% (F 2 ) fertilization resulted comparatively better morphological, physiological and yield characteristics.Item EFFECT OF LEAD TOXICITY ON GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND YIELD OF RICE(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) HASAN, MD. MAHMUDULLead toxicity adversely affects the growth and development of rice plants. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of lead (Pb) stress on morphological, physiological and yield performance of rice plant (Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan29 and cv. BRRI dhan58). The experiment was carried out at the net house of the Department of Agricultural Botany and Plant Physiology Laboratory of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh in Boro season during the period from December, 2020 to May 2021. To know the effects of different lead levels on the morphological, physiological and yield performance of rice plant. The double factor experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications and the differences between the means were evaluated by Least Significant Difference (LSD). In this experiment, the treatments consisted of control and three different lead levels viz. Pb 0 = without lead (0 mM PbSO 4 , Lead(II) sulfate), Pb 1 = 2 mM PbSO 4 , Pb 2 = 4 mM PbSO 4 , Pb 3 = 6 mM PbSO 4 and two different variety viz. V 1 = BRRI dhan29, V 2 = BRRI dhan58. The lead treatments were applied at 15 days after transplanting (DAT). The results showed that the no. of non-effective tillers, proline content, no. of unfilled spikelets panicle -1 increased under Pb toxicity. Lead stress decreased the morphological parameters (plant height, no. of tillers, leaf area) and the values of physiological (MSI%, RWC%, SPAD value, dry weights) attributes in both rice cultivars. Root, shoot, leaf dry weights, and TDM also decreased in both rice cultivars under Pb stress. Yield attributes (panicle length, no. of effective, no. of filled and 1000 grain wt.) and yield (grain yield) parameters were reduced significantly (P ≤ 0.05) under lead stress condition. The loss of grain yield for rice variety 1/BRRI dhan29 due to Pb 1, Pb 2 and Pb 3 level of lead was 15.43%, 35.24% and 48.72% respectively over non-lead stressed control. The loss of grain yield for rice variety 2/BRRI dhan58 due to Pb 1, Pb 2 and Pb 3 level of lead was 11.82%, 26.88% and 39.02% respectively over nonlead stressed control. Therefore, it can be concluded Pb-induced toxic effect on morphological and physiological parameters can cause substantial damage of different rice cultivars which can adversely affect yield attributes of rice plant that ultimately decrease the yield of different rice cultivars.Item EFFECT OF MELATONIN ON MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY, GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF BORO RICE UNDER DROUGHT STRESS(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) ROY, ASHISH KUMARDrought stress adversely affect plant growth and development. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5- methoxytryptamine) plays an essential role in abiotic stress but its role in alleviating drought stress in rice is not clear. Therefore, the present study investigated the effect of melatonin application on plant growth, physiological responses, and yield performance in rice under drought stress. Oryza sativa L. cv. BRRI dhan29 was the planting material. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Rice was grown with 0 and 100 µM melatonin alone or in combination with drought. The control plant was watered as per requirement while the others were subjected to drought stress by withholding water. Treatments were applied 15 days after transplanting. The treatments were: Control (C), 100 µM melatonin (M), withholding of water for 10 days (D1), D1+M, withholding of water for 20 days (D2) and D2+M. Drought stress resulted higher proline accumulation in rice plants. This indicates the drought-induced osmotic stress. Relative water content (RWC%) of drought affected rice plants decreased noticeably. Drought caused oxidative stress and disrupts membrane properties which is clear from decreased value of leaf membrane stability index (MSI%). The reduced SPAD value indicates breakdown of chlorophyll pigment or hindering its biosynthesis. Drought decreased the vegetative growth and reproductive development of rice plant. Exposure of rice plants to drought stress decreased plant height, no. of tillers plant , leaf area, dry weights of root, shoot, leaf and total dry matter (TDM) plant , panicle length, no. of spikelet panicle -1 , 1000 grain weight and finally decreased the grain yield plant -1 . Therefore, drought stress altered the physiological and biochemical processes of rice plants. The visible effect of drought stress was reduction of different growth parameters and alteration of phenological processes. Drought exerted negative effects on the reproductive and yield attributes and finally the yield of rice decreased significantly. Exogenous application of melatonin alleviated the adverse effect of drought stress to some extent, compared to drought affected plants without melatonin. Exogenous melatonin addition improved MSI value under drought stress. Melatonin addition restored the RWC in drought affected rice plants, compared to drought stress alone. Melatonin increased chlorophyll content under drought stress. Melatonin added drought treated rice plants showed improved physiology, growth, reproductive development and the yield. This study suggests that melatonin can be exploited as drought alleviating elicitor.Item EFFECT OF FERTILIZERS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SWEET POTATO (Ipomoea batatas L.) AT FARMERS’ FIELD OF BOGRA IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) G.M. MORTUZAIn Bangladesh sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is one of the important vegetables not only for its high market demand but also its high nutritious value. Present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of fertilizers on the yield of sweet potato at farmer’s level in Bogura, Bangladesh. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design with twelve treatment combinations of four varieties (V 1 : Annou Beni, V 2 : Annou Kougane, V 3 : Kokei and V 4 : BARI Misty Alu-12) and three fertilizer application (T 0 : No chemical fertilizer and no compost, T 1 : BARI fertilizer dose, and T 2 : Maruhisa dose (Chemical fertilizer + improved compost)) replicated thrice. The results of the study showed that V 4 variety and T 2 fertilizer dose had significant effect on growth and yield parameters. Vine length, leaf number per plant and branch per plant were higher in V 4 variety (vine length 23.91cm, leaf number per plant 27.33 and number of branches per plant 6.77 respectively) and in T 2 fertilizer application, and V 4 T 2 treatment. The highest vine length, number of leaf and number of branches per plant were shown during 100 days in V 4 T 2 treatment. The result indicates that V 2 T 2 produced highest tuber length (16.67cm). The result also indicated that V 4 T 2 (V 4 variety treated with T 2 fertilizer) produced significantly highest tuber diameter (20.13) and V 3 T 2 shows highest tuber weight (1.19 kg) per plant and tuber yield of 18.61 t/ha. The yield analysis result revealed that maximum yield of sweet potato was obtained from the application of T 2 fertilizer on V 3 variety than other varieties. Considering the above all fact, it appears that using T 2 : Maruhisa fertilizer and V 3 (Khokei) had a positive impact on growth and tuber yield of sweet potato.Item RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata L.) VARIETIES TO LEAFLET CLIPPING(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL BOTANY, 2021) HAQUE, MD. RAIANULAn experiment was carried out in the research plot of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka from February to June 2022, to explore how leaf clipping and variety affected mungbean growth and yield. The treatments included three leaf clipping techniques, C 0 =No leaf clipping (control), C 1 = 33% Leaf clipping (Removal of one leaflet), C 2 = 66% Leaf clipping (Removal of two leaflet) and four mungbean varieties, V 1 = BARI Mung-5, V 2 = BARI Mung-6, V 3 = BARI Mung-7, V 4 = BARI Mung-8. A two-factor randomized complete block design (RCBD) followed with three replications was used to set up the experiment. Leaf clipping, variety and their interactions had a significant effect on the growth, yield and yield components of mungbean. The tallest plants (13.82, 26.45, 40.77, 58.34 and 62.4 cm at 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55 DAS respectively) were obtained from C 1 V 4 (BARI Mung-8 with 33% leaf clipping). The highest pod length (10.03 cm), the maximum number of pods plant (16.63), the highest number of seeds pod -1 (12.47) were obtained from C 1 (BARI Mung-8 with 33% leaf clipping) treatment combination. The maximum seed size (52.55 mg) was obtained from C 1 V 2 (BARI Mung-6 with 33% leaf clipping) treatment. The highest seed yield (2.09 t ha -1 ) was obtained from C 1 V 3 (BARI Mung-7 with 33% leaf clipping) treatment, while the lowest (1.07 t ha -1 ) from C 2 V 2 (BARI Mung-6 with 66% leaf clipping) treatment combination. Most of the parameters performed at their peak in case of BARI Mung-7 and BARI Mung-8. In most of the cases 33% leaf clipping demonstrated the best performance in terms of growth, yield and yield contributing characters. In case of combined effect, BARI Mung-7 with removal of one leaflet (33% leaf clipping) provided the best results followed by BARI Mung-8 with removal of one leaflet (33% leaf clipping) in terms of growth, yield and yield contributing parameters.
