    CHARACTERIZATION OF MAIZE (Zea mays L.) LANDRACES OF BANDARBAN IN KHARIF SEASON

    An expcnmcnt wav carried OUIunder field conditions 10characterize 10 maize landraces during the period from Marth 2019 10 July 2019 in Kbarif season at the research field of Sher-c-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka. Bangladesh. Planting materials of the landraces were collected from different locations of Bandarban hill di-trict. The landraces were characterized in terms of plant growth and yield parameters on morphologrcal traus. Each of the landraccs were termed as a variety and was named by the color of the grains. As such the veneries (VI) = While. V2= Off white, V)- Purple, V.- Black. Vj= Red. V~= Yellow. V.". Pink. V..= Yellow and Brown scattered. V9= Brown and VIO- Variegated. High level of significance of variation was found 111110ngthe landraccs. Maximum time (67.67 days) for flowering was taken by V10 and minimum lime (53.67 days) was taken by VI. V~ took highest time (128.67 days) and VI look lowest lime (105 days) 10 mature. Tallest plant was found in VIO (210.50 em) and shortest planl was found in V. (160 em). Varieties differed in leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, rOOIlength, root spread circumference and tassel length. TIle maximum cob length (2ll.4 em) was recorded from V I and the minimum from V, (IS.25 em). The highest cob circumference (16.70 ern) was in V. whereas. thc lowest (10 crn) was III VIO• VI had the maximum grain rows cob" (16.17) whereas. V6 had the minimum (10.75). VI exhibited the maximum number of grains 1'0\\ I (26.70) and V" had the minimum (13.50). IlighcsI number of grnms per cob was counted at VI (335.17) and lowest number was at V" (164.31). Varieties also differed in stern dry mailer. leaf dry weight. shell weight and chaffweight. The greatest grain weight per plant was auaincd in VI (62.55 g) while. the 10\\csI was in V6 (27 g). VI showed the maximum 100 grains weight (23.36 g) and V. showed the minimum (14.94 g). VI showed the highest grain yield (3.10 I ha I) and V. showed the lowest gram yield (J.28 I ha"). V. presented the highest stover yield (6.89 I ha I) and V. thc 10\\cSI (4.40 t ha'). Mrcronutrients and mulching influenced significantly on most of the parameters. TIle data were recorded on various growth and yield parameters of broccoli.     EFFECT OF FOUR PRE- STORAGE SEED TREATING CHEMICALS ON MAINTAINING SEED QUALITY AND REDUCING STORAGE COST OF RICE SEED

"lability (0.). germination speed index. seedling vigor index. seedling dry weight. mean root length of seedling. mean shoot length of seedling. mean total length of seedling and relauvc values of these parameters were recorded at storage, 8 months nflcr storage and 9 months after srorage. Results indicated that up to 8 months after storage germination, viability, relative seed germination and relative viability were statistically similar in both BR II and SHIH dhanS7. BUI at 9 months after storage. these # II.qflCU1r.. parameters were reduced drastically in BRII. whereas statistically similar to at II months after storage. (0.3 mg dry WI. eq. extract! mt.) showed the highest allclopathic effect and gave the 101\1,·,1 root length (0.533 mm). The spreading of hogwecd extract at T" (0.3 mg dry \~1, eq. extract mL) conccnmuion on barnyard grass seeds showed the highest allelopthic effect for the shoot and root length (i.e .. 1.9 mm and 0.93 nun. respectively). The interference results above ,ugg~t Ih31 Coccinea cordifolia and Bocrhuvia diffl/se L. might haw allelopathic potential due to some nativ C allclochcmicals, Therefore. ('OCciIlCU cordifolio and Boerhuvio di!li'.\1! L. could be used as mulch or soil additives to suppress weeds fur sustainable crop production.

    EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES OF LIVESTOCK POPULATION AT MIRZAPUR UPAZILA IN TANGAIL BANGLADESH

    The objective of this study was to investigate the nutritional statu, of livestock and correlate it with the prevalence of gastroirucstinal parasites (GP) at Mirzapurupnzila in Tangail district. A total 150 questionnaires were prepared to assess the nutritional status of livestock in this study. Total 170 beef caulc. 63 dairy cow. II Goal/sheep and 23 chicken history and fecal samples were collected and evaluated, About 160'0 animals were reared in traditional rearing system and 24,}. animals were reared in intensive rearing system. Among the population 12% caule, 10% dairy cow. 8% goat/sheep and 6% chicken where found diseased condition. Only 18% cattle. 22% dairy cow. 14% goat/sheep & 10% chicken were vaccinated. 50% cattle. 50% dairy cow. 14% goat/sheep were de-wormed routinely. Dairy cow was supplied the highest amount of green grass (9.7 kg/day), Only 76% fanners followed the method of processing nee straw to feed their animals. Overall prevalence of GP infestation was 76%. Prevalence of Paramphistomum spp. infestation was found to be the highest (24%) followed by Fasciola spp, 16%. Trichostrongylus spp. 4~o. Eimeria spp. I 4%. Isospora spp. R%. Trichuris spp. 4·'0. Strongyloides spp, 6° o. The findings of this study provide an epidemiological forecast showing the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in cattle. which can be helpful for the clinician in the diagnosis of such infections. The study revealed that nutritional status. health conditions and gastrointestinal parasites result variations in the productivity of animals.

    ANTI-DIABETOGENIC IMPACT OF AIIi"m sativum (GARLIC) AND Nigella sativa (BLACK CUMIN) ON DIABETIC RAT MODEL

    A study \\OJ;, conducted 10 determine the single and combined effects of black cumin and garhc on streptozorocin (STZ) mduced diabetic rat model, Sixty (60) albino rats at )·4 weeks of age were obtained from local market and divided 11110five groups. 1110.'groups were normal control (A). diabetic control (9). diabetic treated \\ irh garlic (Cl. diabetic treated with black cumm (D) and diabetic treated \\ uh black cumin and garlic (E) extract "I J dose rate of 2S0. SOOand 7S0 mg/kg body weight respccnvely for' weeks. On day O. 7. 14 and 21 blood samples were collected and blood glucose level was determined using diabetic kit. The blood glucose level was reduced from 117.5 ± 10.61096.1 ::: 2.4. 18.3.5::: 9.410 101.3 ± 2.5 and 178.6 ± 7.71091.1 .t 1.4 and the average body weight were increased from 257.6 ± 6.3 to 288.1 ± 2.5. 254.3 ± 10.7 to 282.5 ± 8.8 and 257.5 ± 9.0 to 286.8 ± 7.3 in group C. D. E. respectively after J weeks of treatment. Moreover. blood cholesterol level was reduced from 177.5 ± 10.6 to 96.1 ± 2.4. 183.S ± 9.4 to 101.3 ± 2.S and 17f!.o ± 7.7 to 91.1 ± 1.4 in group C. D. E. respectively after 3 weeks of treatment. Our findings concluded that the combination of garlic lind black cumin could be used as antidiabetogenic agent III diet.

    YIELD AND QUALITY OF POTATO AS INFLUENCED BY BIOADSORBENT IN ARSENIC TREATED SOIL

    About 3 million hectare land of Bangladesh is covered by groundwater sources for Irrigation and a significant portion of Irrigation water is arsenic (As) contaminated. To produce safe potato under As contarnmated soil. a pot experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangia Agncultuml University. Dhaka during the period from November 2020 to Apnl 2021 to find out thc effect of nee husk 3S an bro-adsorbent to decontaminate As toxicity in potato. TIle experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Arsenic levels (4) vi:.. ASo:control (0 mg As kg" soil). As,: 20 mg As kg I soil. Asj: 40 mg As kg·1 soil. and Asc 60 mr As kg" soil. Factor B: Rice husk levels (4) viz .• Ro: control (0 g kg I soil), RI: 20 g kg" soil. Rl: 40 g kg' soil and RJ: 60 g kg" soil. TIIC experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were recorded on yield and some quality contributing parameters of potato. Results revealed that As and/or rice husk had significant effect on most of the yield lind quality contributing parameters studied in this experiment. The result revealed that number of tubers plan r1 gradually increased with increasing both As and rice husk levels. On the other hand. mean tuber weight decreased with increasing As level, but in case of rice husk and their combination had no effect this parameter, Yield of potato (g plant') gradually decreased with the increase of As levels while increased with increasing rice husk levels. The maximum yields (runge 399.33- 416.67 g plant I) were obtained from ASoR2• ASoR,. As1RI, AsIRl and As,RJ whereas, the minimum was from As)RJ (350.33 g plant I). Specific gravity and dry matter content of both flesh and peel showed negative trends with increasing As levels in soil. vice- versa results were recorded from rice husk levels. The combined effects of As and rice husk had significant effect on specific gravity, but not on both flesh and peel dry mailer content. The highest specific gravity (1.0749 g ern") was observed from~. Therefore. potato growers can grow potato up to 20 mg As kg" contaminated soil treated with 20 g rice husk kgl soil. which contains safe As load than the critical one (0.157 mg As kg -I FW) for human consumption
