    MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES AND YIELD EVALUATION OF ONION GENOTYPES IN ACID SOIL

    An experiment was conducted to study the morphological and yield characters with five genotypes Choto Bombay onion (control), Big Bombay onion, Special Bombay onion, Uz-1 and Uz-2 onion at the research farm of Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet from November 2013 to July 2014 with a view to select the suitable genotypes based on higher yielding abilities in acidic soil condition. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental field was divided into three blocks representing three replications and each block had five individual plots with five genotypes that are evaluated on the basis of morphology and yield characteristics. Choto Bombay Onion (control), Two Indian cultivars namely Special Bombay Onion and Big Bombay Onion were collected from seed market at Dhaka while another two cultivars Uz-1 and Uz-2 were collected from Uzbekistan. Results revealed that high yielding genotype was Uz-2 which had highest in bulb fresh weight. The genotype Uz-2 was maximum in Bulb fresh weight, leaf sheath diameter, root fresh weight and bulb diameter and had contain highest moisture content. The genotype Uz1 onion was maximum in leaf blade diameter, leaf blade length, leaf blade fresh weight and root fresh weight whereas bulb length, bulb dry weight, leaf sheath length, leaf sheath dry weight and leaf blade dry weight was highest recorded in Special Bombay Onion. In maximum parameter Choto Bombay onion was lowest except leaf sheath length, root fresh weight, leaf sheath fresh weight, root dry weight, bulb dry weight and leaf sheath dry weight. Considering yield and yield contributing characters Uz-2 can be selected as the best genotype for Sylhet region.

    MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SWEETPOTATO (Ipomoea batatas L.) GENOTYPES

    The present study was carried out at the research farm of Crop Botany and Tea Production Technology Department at Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet during July to December 2013 to study the morphological features and yield of nine sweet potato genotypes to find out the most suitable ones. Among the genotypes, two were Bangladeshi namely BARI SP-7 and BARI SP-9 and the rest seven were Japanese genotypes viz. JSP-1, JSP-2, JSP-3, JSP-4, JSP-5, JSP-6 and JSP-7. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on the morphological and growth studies were recorded at 20 days after planting (DAP) and yield parameters at final harvest. Results revealed that the morphological parameters viz. vine length, number of vine plant , diameter of main vine and yield contributing characteristics like number, length , diameter, fresh weight, dry weight of storage root, fresh and dry weight of vine, leaves and yield varied widely among the genotypes. From the observation it was found that the genotype that showed better results in regard to vegetative growth parameters their yields were low. The Japanese genotypes were grown vigorously but their production was poor. In vegetative characteristics BARI SP-9 produced the longest vine length, the highest vine number plant -1 1 which was comparatively lower than that of BARI SP-7. Poor growth in respect of vine length and number of vine plant which were 298.7 cm and 6.6 but yield was only 21.25 t ha -1 -1 was found in JSP-4 (140.7 cm) and JSP-1 (3.06). The genotype JSP-5 produced fresh weight, dry weight, number and diameter of storage roots plant were 2140 g, 585.36 g, 5, 3.27 cm, respectively but among the Japanese genotypes JSP-3 had number of vine, length, fresh weight and yield of storage roots 6.3, 9.67 cm, 2307 g and 19.22 t ha -1 respectively were which were comparatively better in terms of growth and yield. Among all the genotypes the maximum diameter, number, length, and yield of storage root recorded were 3.0 cm, 6.53, 10.8 and 22.83 t ha -1 -1 in BARI SP-7. The genotypes BARI SP-7 and JSP-3 were found suitable for their better growth and yield performance in acidic soils.

    MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION IN RELATION TO GROWTH AND YIELD POTENTIALS OF MAIZE GENOTYPES IN SYLHET

    An experiment was carried out for morphological characterization and evaluation of field performance of maize genotypes at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany and Tea Production Technology, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), Sylhet during December 2014 to May 2015. The experimental materials were ZM 0001, ZM 0002, ZM 0003, ZM 0004, ZM 0005, ZM 0006 ZM 0007 and BARI Maize 6 and were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Significant variations were observed for most of the plant characters studied among eight maize genotypes. The tallest plant (246.5 cm) was found in the genotype ZM 0005 and the shortest (175.1 cm) was in ZM 0007. Highest number of leaves was produced in ZM 0001 (14.01) at 75 days after sowing (DAS). Highest number of roots, longest root and maximum root spreading was produced in ZM 0001 (42.67), ZM 0001 (31.10 cm) and ZM 0003 (27.73 cm), respectively at 90 days after germination (DAG). Longest and widest leaf was recorded in ZM 0004 (94.67 cm) and BARI Maize 6 (10.32 cm), respectively. The most spreaded plant both in north-south and east-west direction was found in ZM 0005 (139.3 cm and 37.67 cm, respectively). The plants of genotype ZM 0005 showed the most vigorous growth (0.9167 m ) and ZM 0005 had highest plant volume (0.3267 m 3 ). Highest tillering percentage was found in ZM 0002 and ZM 0003 (31.67%). The genotype ZM 0004 tasseled and silked earlier. The genotype ZM 0004 and ZM 0005 had the longest internodes (21.61 cm). Longest ear height was found in ZM 0005 (143.8 cm). Ears appeared between 6-11th node. Longest ear peduncle was found in BARI Maize 6 (8.583 cm). The genotype ZM 0004 matured the earliest (109.3 days) and BARI Maize 6 matured the last (126 days). Longest and widest tassel was found in ZM 0004 (46.73 cm) and BARI Maize 6 (32.73 cm), respectively. Highest amount of root dry weight was found in ZM 0007 (36.03 g) and shoot, leaf and total dry matter was obtained in BARI Maize 6 (254.6 g, 45.99 g and 287.5 g, respectively) at harvesting. Highest AGR, CGR value was recorded in BARI Maize 6 (5.686 g day 3 respectively) and RGR value was in ZM 0001 (114.1 mg g -1 -2 -1 and 45.48 g m day , ). The genotype ZM 0006 produced highest RSR and RWR value (0.1818 and 0.1536, respectively) and the genotype BARI Maize 6 produced highest SWR and LWR value (0.918 and 0.5967, respectively). Highest length and diameter of ear was recorded in BARI Maize 6 (16.06 cm and 4.607 cm, respectively). Number of kernel rows ear -1 -1 day -1 was observed in BARI Maize 6 (30.89). The longest, widest and the thickest kernel was found in ZM 0005 (9.99 mm), BARI Maize 6 (8.977 mm), ZM 0005 (4.363 mm), respectively. The genotype ZM 0004 showed highest prolificacy index (1.33). Highest thousand kernel weight (253.4 g), grain yield ear was highest in ZM 0005 (13.89) and highest number of kernels row -1 ) was produced by BARI Maize 6 followed by ZM 0005 and ZM 0004. Maximum growth and yield contributing characters showed significant positive correlations with grain yield. Among the studied genotypes, BARI Maize 6, ZM 0005 and ZM 0004 performed better among the studied genotypes in respect of morpho-physiological and yield contributing characters.     MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF EXOTIC AND LOCAL OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus) CULTIVARS IN ACID SOIL

    Acid soils occur commonly in the high–rainfall areas along the hilly regions of Sylhet as a serious constraint to crop production and a primary yield-limiting factor. An experiment was conducted in the field laboratory of Department of Crop Botany and Tea Production Technology of Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet from March to October 2014 with a view to selecting the superior okra cultivar in relation to growth characters and yield attributes in acidic soil conditions. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A total of 11 cultivars (treatments) viz. BARI Dherosh-1 (control), JO-1, JO- 2, JO-3, JO-4, Okra Onamika, Bankim, Durga, Indian, China and Thai were evaluated on the basis of growth and yield attributes. Orka Onamika, Bankim, Durga and Indian were collected from India, and JO-1, JO-2, JO-3 and JO-4 were collected from Japan. Significant variations were observed in all the parameters except the germination (%) and yield. Results revealed that high yielding cultivar BARI Dherosh-1 was taller at final harvest. Early flowering and maximum number of fruits plant observed in the cultivar Indian. Longest fruit length picked up in Bankim, whereas JO-1 showed the largest fruit diameter. The cultivar JO-1 cultivar showed superiority in germination capacity and number of seeds fruit -1 . JO-3 produced higher in individual fruit weight, number of branches and total number of flowers plant -1 . It appears attractive with ridge less, slender uniform size and shape, and was found tasty more due to softness and less fiber content. Regarding fruit yield, the cultivar JO-3, JO-2, Bankim and Okra Onamika performed better. Based on overall performance in morphological and yield attributes comparatively JO-3 proved to be promising cultivar in acid soil conditions of Sylhet.

    MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL FEATURES AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF SOYBEAN GENOTYPES IN ACID SOIL

    An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Crop Botany and Tea Production Technology, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet, during the period from 10 April to 25 August 2013 to evaluate the morpho-physiological attributes and yield performance of nine advanced genotypes and five varieties of soybean in acidic soil. The tested genotypes and varieties were Binasoybean-1, Binasoybean-2, Shohag, BARI Soybean-5, BARI Soybean-6, SBM-9, SBM-15, SBM-17, SBM-18, SBM-20, SBM-22, SBM-73, SBM-78 and BAU-S/70 used as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The result revealed that there was significant differences in plant height, number of branches plant -1 , number of leaves plant -1 , days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, root dry weight (g), stem dry weight (g), leaf dry weight (g), total dry matter (TDM), absolute growth rate (AGR), relative growth rate (RGR), crop growth rate (CGR), pod length, number of pods plant -1 , number of seeds pod -1 , number of -1 seeds plant , 100-seed weight, seed yield plant -1 -1 and yield ha among the soybean genotypes at all growth stages. Among the genotypes, SBM-78 showed the highest TDM accumulation, AGR, CGR, 100-seed weight while BARI Soybean-5 had the highest number of branches plant -1 , leaves number plant -1 , stem dry weight, leaf dry weight, pod -1 length, seeds pod -1 , seeds plant and economic yield in acid soil. Both genotypes showed better growth performance and produced the highest grain yield due to superiority of yield attributing characters in acid soils than the other genotypes. Therefore, BARI Soybean-5 and SBM-78 are possibly to be preferred as acid soil tolerable genotypes than others.

    PHYSICO-MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF EXOTIC AND LOCAL OKRA CULTIVARS IN ACID SOIL

    An experiment was conducted in the research field of Department of Crop Botany and Tea Production Technology, Sylhet Agricultural University, Sylhet from May to October 2013 with a view to select the superior Okra cultivar in relation to growth and yield attributes in acidic soil conditions. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A total of 8 cultivars viz. BARI Dherosh-1 (control), Orka Onamika, Bankim, Durga, JO-1, JO-2, JO-3 and JO-4 were evaluated on the basis of growth and yield attributes. Orka Onamika, Bankim and Durga were collected from India while JO1, JO-2, JO-3 and JO-4 were collected from Japan. Significant variations were observed in case of all the parameters except the total no. flowers plant . Results revealed that high yielding cultivar Bankim exhibited taller plant at final harvest, produced early flowers, provided the highest fruit setting (%) and the maximum number of fruits plant -1 , and aborted fruits plant -1 -1 The cultivar JO-1 showed superiority in germination capacity and individual fruit weight. The longest fruit length and less fruit abortion were found in Durga, whereas JO-4 showed the highest fruit diameter. The cultivar JO-3 produced higher number of branches plant -1 . Fruits of JO-3 appears attractive with ridge less, slender, uniform size and shape, and was found relatively more tasty due to softness and less fiber content. Regarding fruit yield, the cultivar Bankim, JO-3 and JO-1 performed better. The cultivars Bankim, JO-1 & JO-3 were proved to be promising cultivars in acid soil conditions of Sylhet considering overall performance of morphological and yield attributes.
