MAHBUBURThe main objectives of the study was to find out the extent of the adoption of maize production technologies by the farmers, to describe the selected characteristics of the maize growers and also to explore the relationships between selected characteristics of the growers and their adoption of maize production technologies. The study was conducted in a village named Durgapur under Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district. A total of 100 farmers were selected as sample for the study from a population of 251. Data were collected from the maize growers using personal interview schedule during the period 15 July to 15 August, 2005. Apart from descriptive statistical methods, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient analysis was used in order to analyze data to fulfill the objectives. Findings indicated that the majority (69 percent) of the growers had medium adoption of modern maize cultivation technologies while 30 percent had low adoption and only 1 percent high adoption. Out of ten selected characteristics of the growers, four namely education, area under maize cultivation, annual income, and extension contact had positive significant relationship and age had a negative significant relationship with their adoption of maize production technologies. The rest of the variables namely innovativeness, knowledge in maize cultivation, farm size, cosmopoliteness and agricultural training exposure did not show any significant relationships with their adoption of maize production technologies. Out of 12 problems faced by the farmers two problems in order of importance were: (i) non-availability of storage facilities at farmers' level and (ii) non-availability of hybrid seed.Item ADOPTION OF MODERN AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGIES AND CLASSIFICATION OF THE ADOPTERS AT RAMRAIL UNION IN BRAHMAN BARIA DISTRICT(DEPT. of AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEM, 2006-06) KHAN, AMINUL ISLAMThe main objectives of the study were: (i) to describe the selected characteristics of the farmers, (ii) to determine and describe the extent of use of modern technologies, (iii) to classify the adopters on the basis of adoption of modern technologies, (iv) to explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the farmers with their adoption of modern technologies. But the specific purpose was “Adoption of Modern Technologies and Classification of the Adopters” The study was conducted in Sadar Upazila of Brahman Baria district. An interview schedule was used to collect needed information. Sample size of respondents was 90 randomly selected farmers and interviewed by the researcher himself through face to face interview. Statistical measurement like percentage, range, mean and standard deviation were used to interpret the data. Co-efficient of correlation was computed in order to explore the relationships between the concerned factors. The respondents showed a remarkable individuals difference in their characteristics. The category of respondent having middle age (53.3%), secondary level literacy rate(53.3%), medium family size(56.7%), medium income(46.7%), small farm size(40.0%), medium cosmopoliteness (52.2%), low organizational participation (47.8 %) and medium extension contact(48.9%). The findings reveals that 3.33% of farmers were innovator, 12.22% were early adopter, 34.44% were early majority, 34.44% were late majority and laggards were 15.57% for overall adoption. But incase of individual technologies the category varies supporting the generalization of one individual may be innovator in one innovation but laggard in another. Relationship between education, annual income, farm size, cosmopolitenees, organizational participation, extension contact with their adoption of modern technologies was positively significant. . On the other hand, age, family size had insignificant relationship with their adoption of modern technologiesItem FARMERS’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS USE OF PESTICIDES(DEPT. of AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEM, 2006-06) AMIN, MOHAMMAD ABDUL KADERThe main purpose of the study was to assess farmers’ attitude towards use of pesticides and also to explore the relationships between nine selected characteristics of the farmers’ with their attitude towards use of pesticides. Data were collected from 100 randomly selected farmers out of 500 farmers of Boliardi and Arha village under Bajitpur upazila during March to April 2006, through personal interview. Simple and direct questions with different scales were used to obtain information. Co-efficient of correlation (r) was computed in order to explore the relationships between the attitude towards use of pesticides of farmers and their nine selected characteristics. Seventy seven percent of the respondents had moderately favourable attitude, 10 percent had slightly favourable attitude and 13 percent had high favourable attitude towards use of pesticides. The correlation test showed that farm size and annual income had positive significant relationship; education, extension contact, organizational participation and knowledge on pesticides had negative significant relationship while age, family size, and training experience had no significant relationship with the farmers’ attitude towards the use of pesticides.Item BRAC BENEFICIARIES’ ATTITUDE TOWARDS POULTRY REARING(DEPT. of AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEM, 2006-06) WHAB, MOHAMMAD ABDULBangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) is the largest NGO in Bangladesh. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation, range and percentage were used to describe the variables under consideration. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their use oflPM practices. The findings revealed that majority (57 percent) of the farmers were medium users of lPM while 39 percent were high and 4 percent of the respondents were low users of [PM practices. Among the twelve selected IPM practices, "various cultural methods like tillage of soil, variation in timing of planting, pruning or thinning; fertilization; planting of trap crop etc". ranked first in the order while "use biological methods to keep pest population below the economic injury level" ranked least. The findings also revealed that use of rPM practices by the farmers had significant positive correlation with their education, farm size, annual income, extension media contact, innovativeness, cosmopoliteness and knowledge on IPM while age had negative significant relationship. The majority (67%) of the respondents had medium involvement with overall homestead vegetable production as compared to 24 percent low and 9 percent high involvement. Correlation analysis indicated that among the respondents selected characteristics, family size was no relation with each of their winter, summer and overall homestead vegetable cultivation. Farm size had no relationship with winter vegetable cultivation but had positive relationship with summer and overall vegetable production. Age, education, knowledge on homestead vegetable cultivation, annual family income, farm size and communication exposure were positively related with each of their winter, summer and overall homestead vegetable cultivation. Among the selected 12 problems, the top most three problems according to rank order were "lack of quality seeds and seedlings", "do not get due market price" and "disease and insect infestation".
