    RESPONSE OF GRASSPEA (Lathyrus sativus L.) VARIETIES TO DIFFERENT NITROGEN MANAGEMENTS

    An experiment was conducted at the research field of Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November to March 2011 to study the response of grasspea varieties to different nitrogen managements using RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) with three replications. During the experiment, three varieties of grasspea (V = BARI khesari-1, V 2 =BARI khesari-2 and V = Local khesari) and six nitrogen management treatments (N 0 = Control, N 3 1 1 = Basal application with 20 kg N ha , N 2 = Basal application with 40 kg N ha and 20 kg N ha and 20 kg N ha -1 -1 at branch initiation stage, N -1 , N at flower initiation stage and N 3 =Basal application with 20 kg N ha 4 =Basal application with 20 kg N ha =Basal application with 20 kg N ha -1 and 20 kg N ha -1 5 at pod initiation stage) were used as treatments. In most of the growth stages the tallest plants, highest number of branches plant , plant dry weight, nodule number plant -1 , nodule dry weight and pod number plant , seed number pod -1 , maximum 1000-seed weight, grain yield, stover yield and harvest index was found from BARI khesari-2, which was followed by BARI khesari-1.In case of nitrogen management, distinct variations were observed between initial and later stages. Though N 2 (basal application with 40 kg N ha ) gave higher results for growth parameters initially, it was found that N (basal application with 20 kg N ha -1 and 20 kg N ha -1 3 at branch initiation) was better at later stages than the previously mentioned treatment. Yield parameters like pod number plant , seed number pod -1 , maximum1000-seed weight, grain yield, stover yield and harvest index were also highest in N 3 followed by N .On the other hand, for different nitrogen management techniques, the lowest results were recorded from N 0 2 . For combination effect of variety and nitrogen management it was observed that initial growth was better in V 1 N (BARI khesari-1 + Basal application with 40 kg N ha -1 ) and V 2 N 2 2 (BARI khesari-2 + Basal application with 40 kg N ha ) while later growth and yield parameters were better in V 2 N (BARI khesari-2 + Basal application with 20 kg N ha -1 and 20 kg N ha -1 3 at branch initiation stage) closely followed byV 1 N 3 (BARI khesari-1 + Basal application with 20 kg N ha and 20 kg N ha -1 at branch initiation stage). -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1

    PERFORMANCE OF COTTON HYBRID AND INBRED VARIETIES UNDER DIFFERENT NUTRIENT LEVELS

    A field study was conducted at Cotton Research Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur from July 2011 to February, 2012 to investigate the influence of different levels of fertilizer on a number of hybrid and inbred varieties of cotton in respect of growth, yield components and yield, and fibre quality attributes. The experiment comprised three cotton genotypes (i) HSC-4 (hybrid), (ii) DM-2 (hybrid) and (iii) CB-12 (inbred) variety and five levels of fertilizers (i) Control (without fertilizer), (ii) 25% less than recommended dose, (iii) Recommended dose (RDF: 120, 52, 131,27:N,P,K,S kgha -1 ), (iv) 25% higher than recommended dose and (v) 50% higher than recommended dose. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (factorial) with three replications. The results revealed that seed cotton yield, bolls plant -1 , ginning out turn differed among the varieties. The highest seed cotton yield and ginning out turn were obtained in hybrid HSC-4 and that of the lowest received from CB-12 variety. Increasing levels of fertilizer maintained higher values of all the parameters except days to first flowering, lint index and ginning out turn. The tallest plant (111cm) and maximum days to boll opening (129.3), number of no. of bolls plant (27.08), seed cotton yield (2174 kg ha - ii - -1 ), lint yield (953kgha -1 ), seed index (9.49), staple length (1.2inch), micronaire value (4.3), fibre strength (83.70 psi), uniformity ratio (48%) were observed in the plot where 50% higher than RDF was applied. Plant height, bolls plant -1 , individual boll weight, lint yield and ginning out turn showed higher value with the interaction of HSC-4 x 50% higher than RDF. The highest seed cotton yield (2406 kg ha -1 ) Gross return (144360 tk ha -1 ) Gross margin (75358tk ha ), BCR (2.09) and seed index were obtained with the combination effect of CB-12 x 50% higher fertilizer than RDF. For economic point of view, the results indicate that CB-12 inbred variety x 50% higher fertilizer than RDF was more profitable than any of the other treatment combinations.

    INFLUENCE OF WEED CONTROL METHODS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF AROMATIC AMAN RICE VARIETIES

    A field experiment was conducted in medium fertile soil at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (90º33´ E longitude and 23º77´ N latitude), Dhaka, Bangladesh during July to December, 2011 in aman season with a view to find out the performance of transplant aromatic rice varieties under different weed control methods. The experiment was carried out with four varieties i.e. BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan50 and Chinigura in the main plot and five weed management methods viz. control (no weeding), one hand weeding at 15 DAT, two hand weeding 15 DAT + 40 DAT, Topstar 400SC (Oxadiargyl 400 g L -1 ) @ 100 g ha -1 as post-emergence and Sunrice 150WG (Ethoxysulfuron 150 g kg -1 ) @ 185 ml ha -1 as pre-emergence herbicide in the sub plot in split plot design. Twenty three different weed species infested the field among which Echinochloa crussgalli (51.79%) at 15 DAT, Cyperus michelianus (56.14%) at 30 DAT, Cyperus esculentus (24.93%) and Cyperus difformis (24.54%) at 45 DAT, Cyperus esculentus (33.6%) at 60 DAT and Ludwigia octovalvis (21.88%) at 75 DAT were dominant. BRRI dhan34 gave highest (3.16 t ha ) and BRRI dhan50 produced lowest grain yield (1.88 t ha -1 ). The result showed that pre-emergence herbicide Sunrice 150WG controlled weeds very significantly which showed highest growth and yield contributing characters of rice. Application of Sunrice 150WG showed highest weed control efficiency at 30 DAT 95.28% and 78.95% at 60 DAT. The grain yield produced by Sunrice 150WG was 50.73%, 32.07%, 11.95% and 5.25% higher than the yield obtained from control, one hand weeding, two hand weeding and Topstar 400SC treated plots, respectively. Considering weed control cost, Sunrice 150WG was found more economic for controlling weeds in transplant aromatic aman rice and benefit cost ratio was 2.26 whereas, 1.17, 1.30, 1.46 and 2.14 were found from control, one hand weeding at 15 DAT, two hand weeding at 15 DAT + 40 DAT and Topstar 400SC, respectively. The interaction showed that BRRI dhan34 in combination with Sunrice 150WG produced the highest grain yield (4.10 t ha ) while lowest grain yield (1.44 t ha -1 ) was obtained from BRRI dhan50 in control treatment. -1 -1

    INFLUENCE OF IRRIGATION, FERTILIZER DOSE AND PLANT DENSITY ON THE YIELD OF SOYBEAN

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field Laboratory of Sher- e– Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period from December, 2011 to April 2012 to study the influence of different levels of irrigation, fertilizer dose and plant density on the growth and yield of soybean. The experiment comprised two doses of fertilizer viz. twenty percent lower of the recommended dose, and the recommended dose (Urea, TSP and MP @ 60, 175 and 120 kg ha , respectively) and two levels of irrigation viz. irrigated and no irrigated and three types of plant density viz recommended (44 plants/m 2 ), twenty percent lower and plus twenty percent greater of the recommended density. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The results showed that there was significantly higher soil moisture in the irrigated-fertilized (47.53%), irrigated with recommended density plots (49.96%) and irrigated-fertilized plots having higher density plots (52.8%) in comparison to the that in the non irrigated plots (33.85%). Significantly the highest exudation rate was obtained in the irrigatedfertilized with the highest populated plots (0.077 g/hr) in comparison to the lowest of non irrigated-fertilized recommended density plots (0.02 g/hr). Irrigatedfertilized plots having lower to recommended density showed highest plant height (37 cm), leaf area (147 cm 2 /plant), dry weight (6-8 g/plant) and no. of pods/plant (8-10). Significantly the highest seed yield of 1.00-1.04 t/ha were obtained in irrigated-fertilized plots having recommended or higher density. -1

    BULKING BEHAVIOR OF SEEDLING TUBERS DERIVED FROM TRUE POTATO SEED (Solanum tuberosum L.) AS AFFECTED BY ITS SIZE AND HARVESTING TIME

    A field experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the period from November 2010 to April 2011 to investigate the effect of seed tuber size and harvesting time on morphophysiological characters, yield attributes and yield of potato. The experiment comprised of four different size of seed tubers viz., 28-<45 mm, 20-<28 mm, 10<20 mm and <10 mm and four harvesting time viz., 70 (DAP), 80 DAP, 90 DAP and 100 DAP. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design factorial with three replications. The growth parameters such as stems hill , leaves hill -1 , tuber yield plot -1 , marketable yield plot -1 and tuber yield ha were significantly influenced by seed tuber size and harvesting time. Results revealed that in general, plant height, stems hill -1 , LA plant -1 increased with increasing seed tuber size but yield attributes and yield increased with 28-<45 mm tuber size. The highest tuber yield hectare was recorded in the tuber size of 28-<45 mm due to increased of tubers hill -1 and tuber yield plot -1 . In contrast, the lowest tuber yield ha -1 was recorded in the smaller seed tuber of <10 mm. Results showed that stems and leaves hill -1 , LA, TDM and tubers hill -1 , single tuber weight and tuber weight plot -1 increased with increasing time of harvest upto 90 DAP. The highest number of stems and leaves hill -1 , LA, TDM, tubers hill -1 , single tuber weight and tuber weight plot -1 were observed in the harvesting time 90 DAP and the lowest in harvesting time 70 DAP. However, the highest gross tuber yield ha was observed in the harvesting time 90 DAP and the lowest was recorded in 70 DAP. For combined effect of seed tuber size and harvesting time, the highest gross tuber yield was observed in the treatment combination of 20-<28 mm seed tuber with the harvesting time of 90 DAP which was economically adventitious. -1 -1 -1

    ROW SPACING AND NUMBER OF WEEDING ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MUNGBEAN

    Abstract An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during January to April 2012 to study the effect of intra- row spacing and time of weeding on the performance of mungbean (cv. BARI mung-4). The experiment comprised with two factors viz. (i) Intra-row spacing and (ii) Time of weeding. Four row spacing (S 1 = 15 cm, S 2 = 20 cm, S 3 = 25 cm and S = 30 cm) and four weeding treatments (W 0 = No weeding, W = Weeding at 15 days after sowing (DAS), W 2 1 = Weeding at 15 and 30 days after sowing (DAS), and W = Weeding at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS) were used. There were sixteen treatment combinations under the present study. Results showed that the highest plant height (60.26 cm) was achieved by 15 cm row spacing with three times of weeding. The highest number of leaves plant -1 (11.08), dry weight plant -1 (15.63 g), number of pods plant -1 (43.29), pod length (6.69 cm), number of seeds pod -1 (9.43), 1000 - seed weight (30.49 g), grain yield (1591 kg ha -1 ) and biological yield (3964 kg ha ) were gained by 30 cm row spacing with three times of weeding. The highest harvest index (44.26%) was achieved by 25 cm row spacing with two times of weeding. The highest weed biomass (fresh weight basis) was obtained with 25 cm row spacing with three times of weeding (654 kg ha -1 ) where 15 cm row spacing with one weeding (330 kg ha -1 ) showed the lowest weed biomass. But at the time of harvest the highest weed biomass was achieved from 15 cm row spacing with no weeding (796 kg ha ) where as the lowest was observed from 30 cm row spacing with three times of weeding (439 kg ha -1 ). With the treatment combination of 25 cm row spacing with two times of weeding showed very close yield (1585 kg ha -1 ) to the combination of 30 cm row spacing with three times of weeding (1591 kg ha -1 ). Hence, the grain yield from 25 cm row spacing with two times of weeding (1585 kg ha -1 ) and 30 cm row spacing with three times of weeding (1591 kg ha -1 ) were significantly similar; so, from economic point of view, 25 cm row spacing followed by two times of weeding was the best treatment combination. 3 4 -1 -1

    ASSESSMENT OF SRI WITH CONVENTIONAL METHOD OF RICE CULTIVATION IN BORO SEASON

    A field experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Dhaka during the period from December 2012 to May 2013 to assess the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) with conventional method of rice cultivation in born season. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Planting method (2 levels); P1 : conventional method. P2: SRI method and factor B: Variety (5 levels): V 1 : BR 16. V 2: 13RRl dhan29. V3: BRRI dhan50. V4 : BRRI hybrid dhan2 and V 5 : Heera 4. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications. Experimental results showed that planting method had significant efibet on all the agronomic parameters except leaf area index (LAI), total dry weight m 2. unfilled grains panicle", rachis branches panicl&'and harvest index. The tallest plant (112.43 cm). root (29.10 cm), higher number of tillers hill'(43.45) at harvest was recorded in P 2. Fligher effective tillers hilr' (41.13). longer panicle (28.15 cm), higher total grains panicle-1 (216.89), number of filled grains panicle' (166.82), grain yield (9.10 t hi) and straw yield (9.48 t ha1 ) were observed in SRI than the conventional method. Variety also significantly influenced all the growth and yield attributes except root length. The longest plant (119. 1cm), highest number (11.62) of rachis branches panicle-1 (11.62), longest panicle (28.20 cm) and highest 1000-grains weight (29.91 g) were produced in V5. Statistically similar grain yields (8.64. 9.16 and 8.97 t ha 5 and biological yields (18.31. 18.58 and 18.08 t ha) were produced by V 2. V4 and V5 respectively. The lowest grain yield (8.10 t ha4) and straw yield (8.75 t ha4 ) were recorded in V 1 and V3 respectively. Maximum number of effective tillers huE' (52.47) was produced in treatment combination of P 2V1 and minimum (8.87) in PV 5. The longest panicle (30.53 cm), maximum total grains panicle-1 (255.40) and unfilled grains (88.60) were also recorded in P2V2.The shortest panicle (23.52 cm) and lowest numbers of grains panicle-1 (145.80) were found in P,V3. The highest grain yield (9.60 t ha4) and straw yield (10.02 t hi') were produced in P2V4. The lowest grain yield was obtained in P,V 1 (7.56 t hi') and straw yield (8.38 t hi') in P1 V3 . All of the five varieties preformed better in SRI practice than in the conventional practice. SRI can give extra return about 11. 26,788 ha' compared to the conventional method of rice cultivation in born season.

    INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF NITROGEN ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SOME INBRED AND HYBRID VARIETIES OF RICE

    An experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period from November, 2011 to May, 2012 to study the 'Influence of Different from of Nitrogen on the Performance of Some Indred and Hybrid Varieties of Rice'. The experiment comprised of two factors viz. Factor A- source of N: (I) N o = Control (No Urea application) (ii) N, = 2.7 g size. N 2 = Prilled Urea (PU) at three installments and (iv) N3 = NPK Super Granule. Factor B-Variety: (i) V 1 = BRRI hybrid dhan 2 (ii) V2 = ACI hybrid dhan I (iii) V3 = Hybrid Hira Rice and (iv) V4 =BRRJ dhan. Analysis is done considering the factors viz. Effect of variety, forms of N and their interaction. From the experimental analysis it can be Concluded that among the four varieties, Results showed that BRRI Dhan29 (inbred) (I 4) Showed the highest grain yield (6.74 t hi'). biological yield (15.32 t hi') and highest Harvest index (43.49%) where hybrid hira dhakn (v 3 ) showed the lowest grain yield (6.22), lowest biological yield (14.49 t hi') and lowed Harvest index (42.29%). But BRRT hybrid dhan 2 (V1 ) Showed the highest straw yield (8.59 t ha d ) and AC! hybrid rice (V2 ) showed the lowest straw yield (8.42 t hi'). Among the treatments. N 3 ( NPK Super Granule) Showed the highest number of effective tillers hiW 1 (18.25), lowest number of non-effective tillers hilF' (2.12), highest number of panicle (18.65), highest number of grains panicle'' was recorded by N 3 (NPK Super Granule) (174.60), Highest 1000 seed weight was recorded N 3 (NPK Super Granule) (27.85 g), highest grains yield (7.87 t hi'), highest straw yield (9.00 t hi'), highest biological yield (16.80 t hi'), and highest Harvest index ((46.65%) where N o (Control) treatment showed the lowest number of effective tillers hilt' (9.05), highest number of noneffective tillers hilt' (3.84), lowest number of panicle at harvest (9.56), lowest number of grains ppanicl&' (140.30) lowest 1000 seed weight (21 .22g), lowest grain yield hi' (4.18 t hi'), the lowest straw hi'(7.37 t hi), lowest biological yield hi' (11.53 t hi 5 and lowest Harvest index (36.16%), The combination effect study N 3V4 (BRRI dhan29 x NPK Super Granule) Showed the best performance regarding growth, yield and yield contributing. So, N 3V4 (BRRI Dhan29 x NPK Super Granule) was the best treatment for the present study.
