    Knowledge and Attitude towards Infection Control among Nurses Working at Selected Hospital in Bangladesh

    Health care providers, especially nurses and doctors are constantly exposed to microorganisms and most of them can be affected by serious as well as lethal infections. The estimations shows that the risk of nosocomial infection is 2 to 20 times higher in developing countries compared to developed countries. The study was aimed to assess the level of knowledge and attitude towards infection control among the nurses in a selected hospital in Bangladesh. A descriptive cross-sectional type of study was carried out, data were collected using selfadministered semi-structured questionnaire and it was analysed using SPSS version 20. About 77.4% of the respondents were in the age group 23-33 years and above eight-tenths (84.5%) of the respondents were female. Below half (46.5%) of the respondents had diploma in nursing and more than six-tenths (68.4%) of the respondents had <5 years of service experience. Most (92.3%) of the respondents mentioned that infection happens when germs invade in a body and cause diseases. Majority (93.5%) of the respondents know about the signs and symptoms of infection and more than three-fifths (67.1%) of the respondents had attended training on infection control. The findings of this study reveal that more than seventy percent of the nurses had good level of knowledge regarding the infection control and two-thirds of the nurses were found to have positive attitude towards infection control. Training programs on infection prevention and control for newly healthcare providers should be provided.

    Factors Influencing the Adolescent Marriage in a Selected Area of Bangladesh

    In Bangladesh, adolescent marriage has a long established custom, especially in the rural areas where it is a common phenomenon for the girls. The study was aimed to explore the factors associated with Adolescent Marriage in a selected area of Bangladesh. A total of 220 adolescent women aged 13 to 20 years were included in this study and the data were collected from August to December 2016 among the adolescence mothers who delivered at selected hospital by face to face interview technique using semi structured questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS version 20. The mean age of the respondents was 18.9±3.2 years. About 97.7% of the respondents were housewives and the majority (58.6%) had primary level of education, 46.3% of the respondents got married at the age of 14-16 years and 40.9% of them got married at the age of ≤13 years. The mean family monthly income was 8412.4±6567.6 taka and most of the respondents (81.8%) experienced their first pregnancy at the age of ≤16 years. More than half (52.3%) of the respondents mentioned that fear of dowry was the reason behind the adolescence marriage. Father’s and mother’s educational level, family monthly income and consent taken during marriage was found to be significantly associated with age of the marriage of the adolescent girls. The findings reveal that the parent’s knowledge about legal age at first marriage was very much insufficient in some part of Bangladesh. It was reported that most of the marriage decision was made by the parents without the consent of the child. Social development such as parental education and urbanization may be the important solution in the prevention of early age marriages

    Physicomechanical Properties of Phosphate Glass Containing Chitosan Films

    In this study, 5% phosphate glass (PG) containing chitosan film was grafted with Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) using UV-radiation. A series of formulation was developed with PEG in methanol. In order to optimize the grafting conditions, the effect of PEG concentration and different radiation doses were studied. Tensile strength (TS), elongation at break and thermal stability of grafted films were studied. The highest TS was found to be 13.80 MPa with 100% PEG, 0% methanol using 2% photoinitiatior at 3 minutes soaking time at 30th UV passes in 5% phosphate glass containing chitosan film. The physico-mechanical properties of prepared films were improved by grafting with PEG with the aid of UV radiation. The DTA/TG study also showed that treated 5% phosphate glass containing chitosan film was more thermally stable than untreated film. The water uptake behaviors of these films were also studied.

    Factors Affecting Utilization of Postnatal Services in a Selected District of Somalia

    Postnatal services refer to measures undertaken after birth to ensure good health of the mother and child. The objective of this study was to assess factors affecting utilization of postnatal services among mothers attending Banadir Hospital in Hodan district, Somalia. The study employed Quantitative methods of inquiry using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design. The study involved 150 mothers who responded to a questionnaire that was used to find out the factors affecting utilization of postnatal services. Questions were asked on demographic information of mothers; knowledge of mothers' about postnatal services, mothers' socio-economic status and factors affecting utilization of the postnatal services. The data were coded and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Key findings of the study were that most women lacked awareness about postnatal services and those who knew about these services only few knew about immunization and family planning services. The majority of the mothers did not know about other services, such as physiotherapy, counseling and physical examination. Lack of money for transport or service costs, un-friendly attitude of health workers, long waiting time for service provider and lack of awareness were the causes of non-availing the services from public institutes.

    Physicochemical Evaluation of Some Commercially Available Brands of Atenolol Tablets of Bangladesh

    Atenolol, a cardiovascular drug, is mainly used to reduce blood pressure and available worldwide under various trade names. The purpose of the current study is to ascertain physicochemical equivalence among the five different brands of atenolol 100 mg tablets commercially obtainable in Bangladesh. The sample tablets were examined for their weight variation, hardness, thickness, friability and disintegration time as well as dissolution time were evaluated spectrophotometrically conferring to the official (BP/USP) methods. The results showed that all brands of tablets showed satisfied results when they were tested for weight variation, hardness, thickness, friability, disintegration time and dissolution time. All the five brands were disintegrate within 15 minutes which comply the USP/BP recommendation. The tested brands were identical according to their dissolution evaluation. All brands showed more than 90 % drug release within 45 minutes and ranged from 99.09% to 100.98%. It can be summarized that the physicochemical properties of all five brands of atenolol tablets marketed in Bangladesh meet BP/USP specifications which indicated that they are pharmaceutically equivalent. Therefore, patients can safely choose anyone of the brands.

    Evaluation of Physiochemical Properties of Nigella Honey from Shariatpur, Bangladesh

    Honey is a complex mixture of a variety of ingredients. The intent of the current study is to characterize the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of Nigella honey obtained from Shariatpur district of Bangladesh and also compare those features with the international standards set up by Codex, EU and International Honey Commission (IHC) in prospect of export to global market. The selected physiochemical parameters included, moisture, color, pH, total acidity, free lactone, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, protein, total sugar and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content all of which were analyzed using standard laboratory methods. The moisture content was 18.35%, color identified as dark brown/amber (131mm), pH was 4, total acidity was 42.5 meq/kg, total protein content was 2%, total sugar content was 70%, HMF content was 32.48 mg/kg, electrical conductivity was found to be 1.2mS/cm and total dissolved solids was 826 ppm. The overall quality of Nigella honey sample appeared acceptable and matched with international standards
