Item EVALUATION OF EXOTIC POTATO GERMPLASM ON YIELD AND YIELD CONTRIBUTING CHARACTERS(DEPARTMENT OF HORTICULTURE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA-1207, 2007-12) HAQUE, MD. EAKRAMULA field experiment was conducted with 12 exotic potato germplasm viz. Atlantic, Atlas, Aziba, Billini, Croste, Daifla, Daise, Delaware, Quincy, Sagita, Sassy, Spunta with Diamant as check at Breeder Seed Production Center, Debigonj, Panchagorh, during December 21, 2006 to March 28, 2007 to determine their suitability as a variety in Bangladesh. All the varieties gave more than 90% emergence at 20-35 DAP (Days after Planting). Tallest (87.8 cm) plant height was recorded in Quincy and the shortest (57.0 cm) was from Atlas and the minimum (2.0) was obtained from Daifla. Maximum (7.2) stem number per hill was counted in Diamant followed by Delaware. Although there was significant variation among the varieties on foliage coverage but all showed more than 90% foliage coverage at 60 DAP and 100% foliage coverage was shown by Daifla, Aziba and Sagita. Significant variation in stem (plant) diameter among the varieties were evident. Maximum (5.9 cm) plant diameter was recorded from Atlas and the minimum (2 .6 cm) was from Diamant. Number of tuber per plant ranged from 6.5 to 14.1 with the minimum and the maximum by Croste and Delaware, respectively. Significantly the highest yield (44.5 t/ha) was found in Aziba and the lowest (32.29 t/ha) was obtained from Sassy. Irrespective of varieties, all produced maximum percent of seed tuber (grade) both by number and by weight. All the varieties showed late blight infection even after receiving two times fungicidal spray. All the varieties were free from PLRV (Potato Leaf Roll Virus) infection except Atlantic, Atlas, Spunta and Diamant. Regarding PVY (Potato Virus Y), varieties showed trace infection which ranged from 0.33-2.33%. Five varieties (Croste, Daifla, Quincy, Sassy and Diamant) were free from PVY. Varieties contained more than i0% dry matter were Atlas, Croste, Daise, Sagita, Sassy and Diamant.Item PERFORMANCE OF OKRA GERMPLASM WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO YELLOW VEIN MOSAIC VIRUS(Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. HUMAYUN KABIR-EThe experiment Was undertaken to study the performance of okra germplasm with special reference to yellow vein mosaic virus among 36 accessions at the 1-l0rticult1lre Farm Division, lIorticulwre Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, .Ioyclebpur, Gazipur, during the period from April 2007 to August 2007. There was a wide range of clilThrent parameters. The maximum (169.37 em) plant height was observed from accession number 14 and the maximiflhl spread of plant was found from accession number 138 (14.62) was recorded from accession number 219 and 114 respectively. At 80 DAS the plant performed the maximum (94.2) number of leaves was obtained from accession number 138. The maximum leaf breath (35.1 cm) was recorded from accession number 148. The minimunl (36.39) and the maximum (68.08) (lay's was required for days to first flowering were from accession number 144 and 114 respectively. The minimum (14.27%) plant was infested by virus at 75 DAS in accession number 139 compare to other accessions number. So, accession number 139 was identified as agronomicallY acceptable resistant line against okra yellow vein mosaic virus.Item EFFECT OF IAA AND GA3 ON THE GROWTH, CURD FORMA TIO AND YIELD OF CAULIFLOWER(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) AKHTER, MOSAMMAT NAZIAAn experiment was carried out at the Horticultural farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla agar, Dhaka-1207 during October 2006 through January 2007 with two growth regulators, Gibberellic Acid (GA3) and lndole Acetic Acid (IAA) applied at two different stages namely vegetative stage and curd formation stage to observe the growth, curd size and yield contributing characters of the modem HYV cauliflower cultivar, 'Shirajuki'. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The field experiment had three replications. There were three concentrations of IAA (0, 5, 10 ppm) and GA3 (0, 80, 100 ppm). Application of IAA 10 ppm resulted the minimum (47.76) days from transplanting to curd initiation and the maximum (34.40 cm) plant height was at harvest while the minimum (28.86 cm) was recorded from control treatment. The maximum number of leaves per plant (25.04). length of the largest leaf (50. 77 cm). breadth of the largest leaf ( 18.20 cm) at harvest, curd diameter at harvest (23.38 cm) were recorded from IAA 5 ppm (11) whereas, the minimum was recorded from control treatment. Application of GA3 100 ppm (G2) resulted the highest pure curd height ( 14.59 cm), curd weight with leaves ( 1.90 kg) at harvest, marketable curd weight (1.33 kg /plant) and curd yield (53.33 t/ha) while the lowest was recorded from control treatment. The maximum benefit cost ratio (BCR) (2.93) was recorded from the treatment combination of I2G2 while the minimum (1.18) was recorded from control treatment. So, IAA 10 ppm and GA3 l 00 ppm indicating the economic viability of using growth regulator in curd growth and yield of cauliflower.Item EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON THE FLOWERING, FRUIT SET AND YIELD OF BITTER GOURD (Momordica charantia L.)(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) MOMIN, MOHAMMAD ABDULA field experiment was conducted to examine the effect of growth regulators (IAA and Ripen-15) and fertilizer management practices on the flowering, fruit set and yield of bitter gourd (Hybrid Corolla- Penta Green) during April to July 2007 at the Horticulture farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. The experiment was considered of two factors. Factor A: Different plant growth regulators viz. control (H ), Ripen-15 (H 2 ) and IAA+Ripen-15 (H ) and Factor B: Fertilizer management practices viz. control (F 0 ), organic manure (F 1 3 ) and inorganic manure (F ). It was laid out in the two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The data obtained for different characters were statistically analyzed to find out the significance of the PGR’s and fertilizer management practices. The tallest plant at 1st flowering time (163.90 cm), the lowest ratio of male and female flower (3.08), the maximum fruit weight (129.10 gm) were recorded from the application of IAA+Ripen-15 (H 3 2 ) but the maximum number of fruit (18.26) and highest yield per hactare (21.89) was found from application of Ripen-15 (H ) and the minimum was recorded in control condition. The tallest plant at 1st flowering (160.72 cm), the lowest ratio of male and female flower (3.06), the maximum number of branches (11.86), nodes (26.33), female flowers (23.72), fruits (16.35), maximum fruit weight (119.92 gm) per plant and the highest yield (19.11 t/ha) were recorded from the application of inorganic fertilizer (F 2 ) and the minimum was recorded in control condition. Interaction effect between plant growth regulators and fertilizer management practices showed a statistically significant variation incaseof most of the recorded characters. The combination of Ripen-15 and inorganic fertilizer (H 2 F ) gave the highest gross return (Tk. 510,000) which is closely followed by combination of Ripen-15 and organic fertilizer (H 2 2 F ). The lowest gross return (Tk. 208,000) was obtained in the control condition where no plant growth 1 0 ), IAA (H 1 2 regulator as well as no fertilizer was applied. The combination of Ripen-15 and inorganic fertilizer (H 2 F ) gave highest benefit cost ratio (2.47) and the lowest benefit cost ratio (0.61) was obtained in combination of control conditions (H 2 ).Item EFFECT OF PRUNING AND PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS ON GROWTH, FLOWERING, FRUITING AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) MIR, ALBELY AFIFAfield experiment was conducted in the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from April to August 2006 to study the effect of pruning and different plant growth regulators on growth, flowering, sex ratio and fruit setting and yield of cucumber (Baromashi). The experiment was laid out in the two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. A statistically significant variation was recorded in terms of all the characters related to growth and yield of cucumber. Three different type of growth regulators viz. H 1 (Maleic hydrazide 200 ppm), H2 Ripen-l S ( ethephon 300 ppm), HJ Crops care (NAA 18 ppm) with control (No growth regulator, Ho) and two different shoot pruning practices; Pl (Pruning to 3 primary branches), P2 (pruning to 5 primary branches) with control (No pruning, Po) were applied in the experiment. Maximum stem length (193.17 cm) at 50 DAS was found in Ho treatment and minimum (167.5 cm) was found in H2 treatment. Maleic hydrazide and NAA showed higher stem length than ethephon 300 ppm. However, the highest number of primary branches ( 12.37), secondary branches (24.31 ), female flower (22.94), fruit per plant (17.07), fruit setting percentage (74.81%), fruit weight (239.78 gm) and yield (45.82 t/ha) were recorded from H2 treatment. The minimum values of the same parameters were observed in Ho treatment or control. Maleic hydrazide and NAA were given lower yield than Ethephon but higher values than the control. Pruning to 5 primary branches showed better results in flowering fruit setting and yield of cucumber than pruning to 3 primary branches. The lowest yield (13.36 kg/plot) was found in Po and highest yield (19.92 kg/plot) was found in P2 treatment. Six days early female flower initiation and four day early fruit maturity was recorded from H2 treatment over control. The lowest male to female flower ratio (2. 75) was found in Ethephon treated plant and highest ratio was found in control. Pruning did not give any significant value in terms of male to female flower ratio. In the interaction of pruning and growth regulators the maximum yield (53.73 t/ha) was found in P2H2 treatment and lowest (17.69 t/ha) was recorded in PoHo treatment. The second highest (48.30 t/ha) yield was obtained from P1H2 treatment which was closely followed by P2H3 treatment (40.58 t/ha). The highest benefit cost ratio (3.54) was attained from the treatment combination of pruming to 3 primary branches and ethephon 300 ppm treated plants.Item EFFECT OF PLANT DENSITY AND PHOSPHORUS ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF STEM AMARANTH (Amaranthus viridus)(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) Saha, Mithu Komer/\n experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka during the period from March 2007 to June 2007 to study the effect of different plant density and Phosphorus on growth and yield of stem amaranth. The experiment was laid out in the two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Factor A: plant density (4 levels) i.e. 15 x 20 cm (S1), 20 x 20 cm (S2). 25 x 20 cm (S3), JO x 20 cm (Sa); Factor B: Levels of phosphorus (4 levels) i.e. 48 kg (25 x 20 cm) gave the highest yield (68.06 t/ha) at 60 DAS, while S1 (15 x 20 cm) gave the lowest yield (35.57 t/ha). All the levels of fertilizer, which was used in the experiment showed a regular increase in yield of stem amaranth start from 30 OAS to 60 OAS. At 60 O/\S. the highest (60.51 t/ha) yield was recorded from P4 (62.4 kg P205/ha) and the lowest (45.11 t/ha) was recorded from P1 (48 kg P205/ha). At 60 DAS. the highest (74.94 t/ha) yield was recorded from S3P3 (30 x 20 cm+ 57.6 kg P20s/ha), while S1P1 (15 x 20 cm+ 48 kg P205/ha) gave the lowest yield (31.35 t/ha). The highest benefit cost ratio (3.02) was obtained from the treatment combination of S3P4 and the lowest (0.84) was from S1 P1.Item EFFECT OF PLANT GROWTH REGULA TORS AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON THE FLOWERING, GROWTH AND YIELD OF SNAKE GOURD iTricosamhes anguina L.)(DEPT. ABDULA field experiment was conducted in the Horticultural Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 during the period of April to August 2007 to study the effect of plant growth regulators and fertilizer management practices on flowering, growth and yield of snake gourd. The experiment was consisted of two factors. Factor A: Different plant growth regulators viz. control (H0), Ripen-15 (H1), IAA (H2) and Ripen-l S + IAA (HJ) and FactorB: Fertilizer management practices viz. control (F0), organic manure (F 1) and inorganic fertilizer (F2). The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The tallest plant at I 51 flowering time ( 169.3 cm), the lowest ratio of male and female flower (3.21 ), the maximum fruit weight (225.5 gm) and the highest yield (20.47 t/ha) were recorded from the application of Ripen-l S + IAA (HJ) and the minimum was recorded in control condition. Interaction effect between plant growth regulators and fertilizer management practices showed statistically significant variation in consideration of all the recorded characters. The combination of Ripen-l S + lAA and inorganic fertilizer (H3F2) gave the highest gross return (Tk. 458,000/ha) and the lowest gross return (Tk. 152,000/ha) was obtained in the control condition where no plant growth regulator as well as no fertilizer was applied. The combination of Ripen-15 + lAA and inorganic fertilizer (H3F2) gave highest benefit cost ratio (2.36).Item EFFECT OF MULCHING AND FERTILIZER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF POTATO (Solanum tuberosum L)(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) RAHMAN, MD. SHAHIDURA field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2006 to February 2007 to investigate the effect of mulching and fertilizer management practices on the growth and yield of potato. The experiment was conducted with three mulching treatments; No mulch (MJ), Black polythene mulch (M1) and Water hyacinth (M2) and three fertilizer management practices; organic fertilizer ( cowdung) (F inorganic fertilizer (F2) and organic (cowdung) + inorganic (F3). The experiment was laid out in RCBD with nine treatments combinations and three replications. The maximum plant height (77.09cm), number of main stem (4.09), number of tubers per hill (6.88), weight of tubers per hill (366.33g), extra large tuber (>55mm) both by number and weight high were recorded when M1 treatment applied. On the other hand, maximum numbers of main stem (3.96), dry weight of haulm per hill ( l l. l 6g), number of tuber per hill (6.11) weight of tuber per hill (333.05g), mean tuber weight (54.22g) was found when F3 treatment applied. The highest yield of tuber (19.30 t/ha) was obtained from the plants grown with M1 treatment and the lowest (13.43 t/ha) from the Mo treatment. The fertilizer treatment F3 gave the highest yield (19.22 t/ha) while the minimum (13.54 t/ha) was obtained from F2 treatment. The combination black polythene mulch with organic (cowdung) + inorganic fertilizer gave maximum yield (22.29 t/ha). On the basis of cost benefit analysis the highest benefit cost ratio was obtained from M1F3 treatment combination.Item IN VITRO REGENERATION OF DENDROBIUM ORCHID WITH DIFFERENT MEDIA AND PGRs FROM PROTOCORM LIKE BODIES(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) HOSSAIN, SHAHDATEAn experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from August to October 2006 to study the effect of different levels of nitrogen viz. control (N 0 ), 50 kg N per hectare (N ), 75 kg N per hectare (N 2 ), and 100 kg N per hectare (N 3 ) as well as different levels of P 2 O 5 viz. control (P per hectare (P 1 ), 75 kg P 2 O 5 per hectare (P 2 ) and 85 kg P 2 O 5 per hectare (P ) on the growth and yield of Gimakalmi. The experiment was conducted in the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Application of different levels of nitrogen significantly influence the growth and yield of Gimakalmi. The maximum (20.00g) fresh weight of leaves per plant was obtained from N 3 3 treatment while the minimum (18.66g) was found from control treatment (N ) at 60 days after sowing. The highest (8.27g) dry weight of leaves per plant was observed in N and the minimum (6.90g) was recorded from control treatment. The maximum (20.25g) fresh weight of leaves per plant was obtained from P 3 treatment and minimum (18.00 g) of fresh weight per plant was obtained from P treatment. The combined effect of various levels of nitrogen and P 2 O 5 0 were also found significant incase of gimakalmi production. The highest yield (62.66 t/ha) was performed from the treatment combination in N 3 P . The lowest yield (55.00t/ha) was obtained from the control treatment where no nitrogen and P 2 O 5 3 were used. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was maximum (3.00) in the treatment combination of N 3 P 3 whereas the minimum (2.13) was recorded from the control treatment (NItem EFFECT OF ORGANIC MANURE AND SEEDLING AGE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF CHINESE CABBAGE (Brassica campestris var. pekinensis)(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) NAHER, NAZMOONAn experiment was conducted in the Horticulture farm of Shcr-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October 2006 to January 2007 to study the effect of different organic manure and seedling age on growth and yield of Chinese cabbage. The experiment considered of two factors e.g. three level of organic manure (cowdung, poultry manure and mustard oil cake) and three seedling age (25, 30 and 35 days of seedling). The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different yield components and yield of Chinese cabbage were recorded. Statistically significant variation was recorded from all recorded characters due to the different organic manure. Considerable highest values were recorded in plant height (27.10 cm), plant spread ( 43.96 cm), number of folded leaves per plant (30.21 ), head weight (1.63 kg), gross yield (95.02 t/ha) and marketable yield (81.30 t/ha) from mustard oil cake followed by cowdung as organic manure and the lowest value was recorded from poultry manure. Seedling age showed significant differences in all recorded characters. Considerable highest values was recorded in plant height (26.80 cm), plant spread (43.48 cm), number of folded leaves per plant (29.90), head weight (1.60 kg), gross yield (93.73 t/ha) and marketable yield (80.15 t/ha) from 30 days of seedling and the lowest value was recorded from 25 and 35 days of seedling. Interaction effect between different organic manure and seedling age also showed significant differences and the considerable yield and yield contributing characters was recorded from the treatment combination of mustard oil cake and 30 days of seedlings, while the treatment combination of poultry manure and 25 days of seedling gave the lowest value. The highest gross return (Tk. 52 I ,640), net return (Tk. 329,834) and benefit cost ratio (2.72) was obtained from the treatment combination of mustard oil cake and 30 days of seedling and the lowest (Tk. 390.000, 190,366 and l.95, respectively) was obtained from the treatment combination of poultry manure and 25 days of seedling.
