Item A STUDY ON THE AVAILABILITY OF MEDICINAL PLANTS FOUND IN THE HOMESTEADS OF KALIAKOIR UPAZILA OF GAZIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, 2018) AFRIN, SADIAMedicinal plants are known as the beneficial plants form the prehistoric times. Therefore, an investigation was done to know the density, factors of medicinal species plantation by the farmers in the homesteads in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur. Information was gathered through a set of questionnaire. 82 no. respondents were randomly selected in four villages of 2 unions. Eleven chose attributes of the homesteaders was taken as autonomous factors. The attributes were age, education, family size, homestead area, plantation area, annual income from medicinal plants, organizational participation, training exposure, environmental awareness, knowledge about medicinal plants and number of medicinal plants. The discoveries in regard of assessment with Bel (2.41%), Desi Neem (1.35%), Sajna (1.25%), Akon (0.73%) and Tulsi (0.72%) was found dominant medicinal species. Young aged (43.9%) people found in number, among the respondents. Most of them completed primary level (53.7%), medium size families (50%), medium (63.4%) homestead area, small (76.8%) plantation area, medium income (81.7%), low organizational participation (58.5%), most of them with low training exposure (50%), medium environmental awareness (39.1%), medium Knowledge (54.9%), medium medicinal plants (62.2%) was observed. There was significant connection between density of medicinal plant with age, education, annual income and Organizational participation, training exposure and number of medicinal plants. Therefore it was found that variables were highly interlinked with density of medicinal plants in homesteads. Further study should be carried out to investigate so that clear and deeper information may found.Item USE OF GRASS CLIPPINGS ENHANCES THE MATURITY AND STABILITY OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE INTO COMPOST(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, 2018) LIKHON, MD. MAHMUDUL HASANMore than thirteen thousand metric ton of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is generated each day in Bangladesh currently where only 37% are collected by the authority. Experts predict that more than 47 Metric ton of MSW will be generated by 78 million of urban people by in 2020. So the management of MSW is and will be one of the major challenges of Municipal Authority of Bangladesh. Improper management of municipal solid waste (MSW) causes hazards to inhabitants. Various studies reveal that about 90% of MSW is disposed of unscientifically in open dumps and landfills, creating problems to public health and the environment. Bioconversion of MSW can be a better alternative to avoid environmental pollution. But the decomposition of MSW is not the best way for compost preparation. Grass Clippings (GC) at optimum level can help promote the compost process in more effective way. Optimum amount of GC along with optimum level of cow dung (CD) for the compost preparation from MSW are critically studied. In this study, MSW amended with bulking materials GC and nitrogen source cow dung (CD) were evaluated for improved stability and maturity during composting of MSW where 15 kg GC and 5 kg of CD showed the most promising efficiency in terms of physical, and chemical parameters. The study is concluded with a few fruitful suggestions that is use of other lignocellulosic materials like water hyacinth and herbaceous weeds can also be used instead of grass clippings which may be beneficial to encourage the competent authorities/researchers to work towards further improvement of the present system.Item STUDY ON TREE-CROP-LIVESTOCK INTERACTION WITH ENVIRONMENT IN THE RURAL AREAS OF SIRAJGANJ(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) AHMED, MOST. ISMAT SADIAAgroforestry is a land use management system in which trees or shrubs are grown around or among crops or pastureland. This intentional combination of agriculture and forestry has varied benefits, including increased biodiversity and reduced erosion. Livestock-based Agroforestry or mixed farming systems provide important opportunities for increasing food production from farm animals. The objectives of the study were characterization of livestock-based agroforestry systems in the rural area of Sirajganj district and to know the interaction among tree, crop, livestock with environment in the study area. The study was conducted in ten villages of two Upazilas of Sirajganj district in February to December 2017. A well-structured questionnaire was developed based on objectives for collecting information by purposive random sampling method of 50 respondents. Maximum people of the villages were farmers and agricultural production was their main occupation. There were different agroforestry systems found in the study area namely- Agri-silviculture (15), Silvopasture (10) and Agro-silvopasture (25) where different types of agroforestry practices were observed like mango based agroforestry (12), jackfruit based agroforestry (28) etc. The farmers practiced tree plantation and livestock rearing. To conserve the soil of land and to protect the soil from washed away, for getting different usable products farmers planted different tree species. Among fruit trees 84% farmers had mango tree, and among timber tree 96% respondents had Eucalyptus. There were different interaction among tree-crop-livestock and environment. By Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient it was observed that, there was a statistically significant relationship among tree-crop-livestock and environment and farm size that was 0.747, road side plantation that was 0.934 and production of the farmers that was 0.674 respectively. This study would therefore make use of the local knowledge of farmers to understand the tree-crop-livestock interactions on small holder farms and advice on which agroforestry practices best for sustainable agro-ecological intensification.Item CONTRIBUTION OF HOMESTEAD AGROFORESTRY PRACTICETOWARDS REDUCING POVERTY OF JALOKATHI DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) FERDOUS, JANNATULHomestead Agroforestry is an important consideration for socioeconomic development in our country and also all over the world. Systematic Agroforestry practice is being popular day by day in Jalokahti district of Bangladesh. Considering the situation, the present study aims to contribution of homestead Agroforestry practice towards reducing poverty of Jalokathi District and explore the contribution of the selected characteristics of the homestead farmers on homestead Agroforestry practice. Data were collected by purposive random sampling method of 60 respondents from 350 farmers of three villages of Jalokathi union of Jalokathi Sadar upazila under Jalokathi district by using a pretested interview schedule during the period of 15 June 2017 to 15 December, 2017. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 16. Findings indicated that near about half (48%) of the respondents had high knowledge on homestead production and high Agroforestry contribution (household income) (52%) to reduce poverty under managed Agroforestry. Unmanaged Agroforestry also contributed to reduce poverty (77% with medium household income) but lower than managed Agroforestry system. Out of 8 selected characteristics of the respondents, educational qualification, homestead size, current housing condition, current household assets, current sanitation system and knowledge on Agroforestry had positive significant relationship with Contribution of homestead Agroforestry (i.e. household income) towards reducing poverty. The rest of the variables namely: age and family size did not show any significant relationships with Contribution of homestead Agroforestry (i.e. household income) towards reducing poverty.Item POTENTIAL USES OF WATER HYACINTH FOR SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) AKTER, AFSANAWater hyacinth is an invasive alien aquatic species introduced to our country from tropical South America. This study aims at assessing the local people perception on water hyacinth, its management and sustainable use of water hyacinth in making it environmental friendly. Local people’s perceptions are key to sustainable management of water hyacinth because most of the information are relatable to potential use of water hyacinth that is environmental friendly and also can be helpful in case of improving their socio-economic status. To conduct the study properly a structured questionnaire having seven section with seven parameter has been prepared and went to the study area which are nearer to Roa beel. Roa beel is situated in Chandpur union, Katiadi upazila under Kishoregonj district. In rainy season excessive water hyacinth have been found in the study area and people of three village namely Sheker Para, Purbo Para and Modinas Para were interviewed according to the questionnaire. The study assesses local people’s perception regarding knowledge and understanding of water hyacinth, their management techniques, advantages and disadvantages of water hyacinth and its practical use in their daily household life and different sectional activities including fishing, livestock, agricultural farming activities especially in floating agricultural practices and in industrial purposes. From the study findings we established that excessive amount of water hyacinth of the beel can be developed into a potential and promising sector for the locality especially by making water hyacinth into low cost and environmental friendly animal feed, bio-fertilizer and biogas. That will definitely help in sustainable environment management and will also create a better income generating opportunity for the local unemployed people.Item STUDY ON PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED VEGETABLES CULTIVATED ON ROOFTOP AND FARM CONDITIONS(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) SULTANA, MST. ANISAOur agricultural land is decreasing day by day. In modern days rooftop farming can provide solution to mitigate this problem. We can use our roof of building to cultivate crops and increase food demand. This experiment was conducted at the roof of third floor of Biotechnology Department and Agroforestry farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from October 2017 to March 2018 to study on performance of selected vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) cultivated on rooftop and farm conditions. Data on plant height, number of leaf, leaf length, leaf breadth, head height, diameter and weight of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli were collected. The field and roof top experiment were conducted in RCBD design with three replications. MSTAT-C computer package was used for processing and analysis of data. The mean differences were adjusted by Least Significance Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance. In cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli, yield parameters value were increased with increasing days after planting .In cabbage cultivation, plant height, leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth, head height, head diameter and head weight were 36.65 cm, 12.52 cm, 22.69 cm, 21.29 cm, 18.39 cm, 54.81 cm and 939.72 g respectively at 60 DAT but in farm condition it were 27.66 cm, 9.84 cm, 18.31 cm, 17.44 cm, 16.24 cm, 50.74 cm and 865.61 g respectively at 60 DAT. In cauliflower cultivation, plant height, leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth, head height, head diameter and head weight were 43.19 cm, 12.32 cm, 32.21 cm, 22.31 cm, 18.04 cm, 54.85 cm and 888.85 g at 60 DAT but in farm condition it were 38.64 cm, 9.96 cm, 26.43 cm, 18.21 cm, 16.15 cm, 50.26 cm and 740.43 gat 60 DAT. In broccoli cultivation, plant height, leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth, head height, head diameter and head weight were 42.98 cm, 10.44 cm, 29.67 cm, 21.69 cm, 17.60 cm, 51.85 cm and 816.48 g at 60 DAT but in farm condition they were 34.12 cm, 8.43 cm, 22.46 cm, 19.47 cm, 16.28 cm, 47.54 cm and 574.13 g. For all species plant height, leaf number, leaf length, leaf breadth, head height, head diameter and head weight were recorded in roof top condition. Also, the highest curd length, curd diameter and yield was produced by cabbage followed by cauliflower and broccoli produced in roof top condition. The yield components and yield of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli were highest in rooftop and lowest in farm.Item ESTIMATION OF ECOSYSTEM CARBON STOCK AND TREE SPECIES DIVERSITY AT NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN, DHAKA, BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) HOSSAIN, MD. DELWARUrban botanical garden plays an important role in mitigating hazards evolved due to climate change through sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. The study was conducted during the period of January to April 2018 to the estimation of ecosystem carbon stock and tree species diversity at National Botanical Garden, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Using transects line method square plots with a size of 20 m × 20 m were taken. So altogether there were total eighty three sample plot in National Botanical Garden. Above ground carbon (AGC) and below ground carbon (BGC) biomass stock was 192.67 and 31.34, respectively and soil organic carbon mean value of 27.52 Mg ha -1 , 21.45 Mg ha -1 and 16.23 Mg ha , respectively for 0-10 cm depth, 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm depth. The average number of trees in National Botanical Garden (233 tree ha -1 ), basal area (21.45 m ha -1 ) and mean DBH (39.86 cm). Tree diversity range from 0.25 to 1.86 and the mean value of (0.93 ± 0.14) in National Botanical Garden. Relationship such as biomass carbon with basal area, mean DBH, stem density and tree diversity were estimated. Among these the relationship between basal area and biomass carbon showed positive significant correlation. Therefore, the results of the study confirmed that the selected botanical garden can serve as a valuable ecological tool in terms of carbon sequestration, diverse tree species and storage of soil organic carbon. -1 2Item SALINITY EFFECT ON GERMINATION, GROWTH AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata L.)(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA, BANGLADESH, 2018-06) MASUD, U.S.M. REZOWANASalinity is a major abiotic stress limiting mungbean production worldwide including Bangladesh. Since mungbean plant is very sensitive to salt condition, selection of salinity tolerant genotypes becomes important for mungbean improvement. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tolerance of seven mungbean varieties (BARI mung 1, BARI mung 2, BARI mung 4, BARI mung 5, BARI mung 6, BARI mung 7, BARI mung 8) and three germplasms (BMS I, BMS II, BMS III) to salinity at seedling stage under different levels. The pot experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during September 2017 to December 2017 by RCBD design with 3 salinity levels and 3 replications. The germination test was done at BARI lab by CRD design with 4 salinity treatments and 3 replications. Germination percentage (%) was decreased with the increasing of salinity level in all varieties. BARI Mung 6 gave the tallest (36cm) plant at control while it was 31.16 cm at 8 dS/m salinity level. Like plant height all the other parameters i.e. no of branch/plant, no. of leaf, chlorophyll content etc. were also decreased with increasing level of salinity. Maximum number of pods per plant was obtained at control in BMS I (15.02) and decreased in higher salinity. BMS I (9.55) had the highest no. of seed/pod at control and it was decreased to 7.55 at 8 dS/m salinity level. Weight of pod/plant was (22.80g) highest in BMS I among the varieties. Yield contributing characters i.e. no of pod/plant, pod length (cm), weight of pod/plant (g), individual pod weight (g), 1000 seed weight (g) etc. were also decreased with the increasing salinity level.
