Item IMPACT OF HOMESTEAD FARMING ON THE LIVELIHOOD AND FARM ECONOMY IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF NARSINDI AND GAZIPUR DISTRICTS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Jabber, M. M.; Ahmed, M.The study was conducted at Shibpur Upazila in Narsingdi district and Gazipur Sadar Upazila in Gazipur district during the period of January to June 2007. The study was designed to asses the impact and present status of the technologies implemented during December 1997 to June 2004 under Agricultural Diversification and Intensification Project (ADIP). A sample of 100 beneficiaries was interviewed using a pre-tested interview schedule to collect the necessary information keeping the objectives of the study in mind. TIle beneficiaries were selected through random sampling method from 4 unions. Majority of the respondents (70%) were in the middle aged (36-50 years) group, while 60% of the respondents were in the primary level education, having average farm size of 0.221 ha. Seventy percent of the respondents got different types of training. of which 43% participated homestead vegetable cultivation training. Among the implemented technologies through ADJP, most of the beneficiaries were benefited and adopted it for a continued use. The technologies backed up by ADJP were found desirable as perceived from the opinions of the concerned farmers. Most of the technologies like introduction of new varieties, seedling raising, sustained significantly. The impact of ADIP was judged through the life style of the respondents. Most of those criteria were correlated with the individual characteristics of the respondents. Education. farm size. cosmopoliteness, training received had significant relationship with the impact like change in income. food consumption. health and sanitation. The average annual income of respondents increased from Tk 42,000.00 to Tk 71,000.00 while food consumption enhanced from 1700 Kcal to 2050 KcaJ.Item PERFORMANCE OF PINEAPPLE IN TERMS OF YIELD AND QUALITY GROWN UNDER MULTI STORIED AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Hossain, F. M.; Shapla, T. L.; Mortuza, M. M.; Mondal, S.; Shahazdat, M. K.An experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh during the period from May 2002 to August 2003 with the objecti ve to study the fruit quality and yield of pineapple (var. Giant Kew) grown under different fruit tree based multistoried agroforestry production systems. Pineapple was grown under the shade of four fruit trees and one shrub viz. sissoo, mango, coconut, guava and lemon in different combinations. The treatments were T, = sissoo + guava + pineapple, T, = sissoo + lemon + pineapple, T, = mango + guava + pineapple, T. = coconut + guava + pineapple T, = coconut + lemon + pineapple and T" = control having pineapple only. Due to variation of shade created by trees different treatments showed significant differences in yield contributing features and quality of pineapple fruit. The yield of fruits showed considerable variations such as T, treatment showed highest fruit yield (27.08 tha') followed by T, (26.67 tha'), T, (26.35 tha') T. (25.52 tha') and T, (25.21 tha') and the lowest was in T" (23.44 tha'). The fruit set (82.33%), individual fruit weight (0.65 kg), fruit length (12.25 em), pulp of fruit (0.46 kg), pulp-peel ratio (2.35) and yield of fruit (27.08 t/ha) had been found to be the highest in the treatment T" where light intensity was 22.99% under partial shade condition. The p'' and titratable acidity of juice were the highest (5.16) in sunny treatment of T(, while the lowest value was obtained in the most shady treatment of T". Total sugar contents of pineapple (27.17%) including reducing sugar (6.69%) and non-reducing sugar (5.48%) was the highest in moderately shady treatment (T4), where the light intensity was 16.3%. Similarly, total soluble solid content of pineapple was the highest (21.23%) in moderately shady treatment (T4) and the lowest (18.86%) in the slightly shady treatment of T,. Therefore, for desirable quality and high yield, pineapple can be grown successfully in suitable agroforestry model.Item DISEASES OF JAMUN (Syzygium cuminii) SEEDLING IN THE NURSERIES OF BANGLADESH AND THEIR ECO-FRIENDL Y MANAGEMENT(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Chowdhury, M. M.; Hossain, I.The existing health situation of seedlings of jamun (Syrygium cuminii) and management strategies of nursery diseases of seedlings of jamun species in the country is in a stage to be upgraded for successful fruit and timber production to meet the national demand. Plant propagation and nursery management - a vital link in the production of quality planting material (QPM). Experiments were carried out during 2005- 08 to study the status of diseases on seedlings of jamun and development of an environment friendly disease management practice. Important plant pathogens viz. Gloeosporium psidi, Pestalotia psidi and Cephaleuros virescens were detected and identified. Comparative effectiveness of BAU-biofungicide either alone or in combination with two fungicides - Cupravit and Bavistin were evaluated on jamun in the nursery. Among the treatments applied, Trichoderma harzianum based BAU-Biofungicide showed excellent result in controlling leaf spot disease on jamun. BAU-Biofungicide, as an alternate to chemicals can successfully be used.Item GENETIC VARIABILITY, CORRELATION AND PATH COEFFICIENT ANALYSIS IN NINETEEN Brassica rapa GERMPLASM(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Rashid, M. R.Nineteen genotypes of Brassica rapa were evaluated in order to find OUI genetic variability. correlation and path coefficient analysis of yield and yield contributing traits. All the genotypes showed highly significant variation for all the characters studied. High heritability together with high to moderate genetic advance in percentage of mean was observed for plant height, number of primary branches/plant. number of secondary branches/plant. number of siliquae/plant, 1000 seed weight and yield/plant. Correlation and path coefficient analysis suggested that during selection more emphasis should be given on plant height. number of primary branches/plant, number of seeds/siliqua, number of siliquaiplant and 1000 seed weight.Item ROOT GROWTH CHARACTERISTICS AND PRODUCTIVITY OF SOME CHICKPEA GENOTYPES UNDER IRRIGATED AND NON-IRRIGATED CONDITIONS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Murshed, M. J.; Bari, M. N.; Ahmed, J. U.Eight chickpea genotypes were grown in the field condition with and without supplemental irrigation. Both root length and weight densities of these genotypes were affected by moisture stress. The genotypes ICCV-92065. ICCV-94912 exhibited lower yield under moisture stress situation. BARI chola-4. ICCV94923. and Annigiri maintained better root length under moisture stress situation of which BARI chola-4 was the most promising genotype in terms of yield and harvest index, and BARI chola-6, ICCV 92501 and ICCV-94923 were closely following it.Item OPINION OF WOMEN LEADERS ON WOMEN LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES TOWARD RURAL WOMEN EMPOWERMENT(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Bhuiyan, M. H.; Haque, M. Z.; Jahan, E.The purpose of the study was to determine and describe the extent of acti vities of women leaders for empowering rural women. The study was conducted in Dumuria Upazila under Khulna district. Data were collected from 60 rural women leaders through personal interview using an interview schedule during 827 July, 2009. Women leadership activities for empowering rural women was the dependent variable of the study where as leadership experience, awareness of women right. motivation, time spent for social work, extent of contact with rural women, and personality were independent variables. Twenty five leadership activities were identified and from the analysis all were found to be effective for empowering rural women. From the leadership activities score it was found that extent of women leadership for empowering rural women ranged from medium (16.7%) to very high (51.7%). However. an overwhelming majority (83.3%) of the women leaders had empowering capacity ranged from high (3\.6%) to very high. Relationship between dependent and independent variables were were explored. All the independent variables had significant relationships ranged from high to very high with dependent variable at 0.0 I levels.Item EFFECT OF SPACING AND K20 ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF BROCCOLI (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica)(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Sharif, A. A.; Miah, M. A. M.; Hossain, M. I.; Bose, S. K.The experiment was conducted at Honiculture Farm. Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University. Dhaka, during October 2007 to February 2008. The experiment was consisted of two factors, viz. three levels of spacing such as 60 ern x 40 em; 60 cm x 50 emand 60 em x 60 em and four levels of K20 such as 0; 60; 90 and 120 kg/ha fertilizer application. Results revealed that different spacing and K20 levels significantly influenced on growth parameters and yield of broccoli. The maximum plant height, number of leaves. primary curd weight, secondary curd weight and yield per plant were recorded from the widest spacing but the highest yield (14.02 t/ha) was recorded from the closest spacing. On the other hand, all the parameters under study showed better performance with the application of 120 kg KzO/ha. The highest yield (14.70 t/ha) was obtained from this treatment. Combined effect of the closest spacing and the highest dose of K,O also gave the highest yield (16.61 t/ha). The results suggested that 60 cm x 40 em spacing akng wilh 120 kg K,O/ha may be used for higher yield of broccoli.Item RESPONSE OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE VARIETIES, SEEDLING RATE AND WATER REGIMES(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Hossain, M. E.; Islam, M. K.; Maniruzzaman, M.; Khatun, K.; Ali, M. A.A pot experiment was carried out in the experimental site of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture. Mymensingh from June to November. 2002 with a view to study the growth and yield performances of two modem varieties of transplant aman rice as affected by number of seedlings hiW' and water regimes. Variety. number of seedlings nnr', water regimes and their interactions exerted significant influence on almost all the crop characters. At all the growth stages. the maximum values of total tillers hill". leaf. stem. root. shoot. and total dry matter hill', leaf area index were found in BINA dhan 4x4 seedlings hill" x intermittent irrigation. whereas the minimum values of those parameters were in BRRI dhan 39x 2 seedlings hill" x 2527 ern continuous stagnant water. The highest total dry matter (88.09 g) and grain yield pot' (31.25 g) were achieved in the treatment combination of BINA dhan 4 with 4 seedlings hiW' and intermittent irrigation.Item STATUS OF FRUIT SEED TRADE IN BANGLADESH AND TRADERS' PRACTICE FOR SEED QUALITY(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-01) Chowdhury, M. S. M.; Hossain, I.; Ali, M. R.; Alam, M. S.Seed is the vital component in the production of quality planting materials (QPM). A survey was carried out in 260 upzilla under 52 districts of Bangladesh during 2005-06 to study the status of seed trade of different fruit species in the country. The survey revealed that more than 20 fruit species traded in 531 seed stores and a total of 16288.10 kg seeds were sold out amounting Tk. 35.90 million. Variations in different fruit seeds traded in surveyed districts of Bangladesh were also observed. Significant number of seed traders expressed their awareness about the deterioration of seed due to attack of pathogens but did not take any measurement to protect their seeds.
