Item Development of management information system (MIS) for a medium size ceramic products manufacturing enterprise(Department of Industrial & Production Engineering, 1990-03-01) Redwan, Sarder A. H. M.; Rahman, Dr. Md. MizanurIn Bangladesh either in an industrial unit or in any business enterprise economic growth ~s not yet very promin~nt' as management desciplines' are not being followed. 'Real situation' prevailing in industrial units or business fields are rarely examined and for the decisions .based on assumptions or wrong informations, the industrial or business sector faces financial, losses. A way to analyse the real situation is to store every I ' information of the organisation and to take decision as per the report of the analysis. With the objective of developing Manageme'it Ipformation System (MIS) in an enterprise where none has any experience on the MIS, a methodologi~al approach had been followed in',the present work. In step-by-step phases to develop a MIS, at first a general system analysis has been conducted where existing information system, manufacturing system, organi~ation structure, product flow system, key problems of the man,agement etc. were studied. In the, second phase a general design of proposed system was done, where a brief idea has been given how the proposed system would work. In the 3rd phase, an evaluation of the proposed system was conducted by a cost-benefit analysis. In the 4th phase detail formats of input data and reports for,various sub-system was prepared. Finally an implementation plan was given. To show the application ,of MIS, ABC analysis and EOQanalysis was carried for the inventory sub-system of an industrial unit. data (for yearly materials consumed in quantity and their value~) was taken for' four consecutive years. This , . data was processed in I~. :..•. -~ . computer to get percentage contribution of individual. item and to arrange the data in descending orders. From the report it would be shown that on the top of the report the items have come whose contribution by value are greater and. they are listed in descending order. It would be further'noticed that about 80 ~'90% of money had been spent to procure on 10 15% even less ., percentage. of total items .So their control should be restricted. Next a group of item has come, their contribution by' value is less and next a group of item has come having negligible contribution. ,Item Quality improvement of locally manufactured allen key bolt and nut(Department of Industrial & Production Engineering, 1997-04-01) Kumar Saha, Proshit; Nurul Amin, Dr. A. K. M.Industrial sector of Bangladesh has to depend entirely on some impolted spare parts, but it requires long lead time for there procmement. This leads to huge inventoty cost and lot of spares are kept in reserve in the fear of factory shut downs. Allen key Bolts and Nuts are critical spare parts in ceramic industry which has high usage value. 11le quality of allen key bolts and nuts found in the local ma.rket are of very poor. As an attempt to solve this problem the present work wa.s perfonned. Under this work a comperative study of the local and impotted spa.res patts were conducted. Chemical analysis, Vickers hardness, Proof Stress, Microstmcture of the materials of these parts were studied. Apatt Hom that the different pat'ameters of thread of local and import.ed samples are analysed. From the analysis main causes of failure of the local samples at'e identified, suitable materials at'e selected and manufacturing process are developed fl)r their manufacturing. Some Allen key Bolts atld Nuts at'e matlufactured on experimental basis. Different combination of heat treatment such as pack carburizing at different period of time and quenching are petfOl1ned on both locally available and matlUfilctured satnples. 11le proof stress of these samples are checked for quality standard. It was observed that proof stress is increased with the increase of carburizing period for matlUfactured samples but in the case of local samples proof stress is decreased with the increase of cat'burizing period. For mailufactured samples tlle pJ'oof stress was found within acceptable limit. Economic analysis was pedi)nned to evaluate viability of matlUfactut1ng tlle spare locally and it was found that local manufacture of spare parts with the target properties is economically viable and the country save a lot of foreign exchatlge.Item Improvement of productivity of a cycle parts manufacturing unit(Department of Industrial & Production Engineering, 1993-12-21) Iqbal, Mohammad; Khan, Dr. Ahsan AliThe improvement of produc~ivity is ~. concer:n which involve several disciplines, in"eluding management, design engineering, ergonomi.cs, safety engineering, etc .. Most of the cycle parts manufacturing units in Bangladesh cannot compete with the imported bicycles components. The -primary reason being their higher costs of production arising due to -lack of proper utilization of man, machine and raw materials, excessive consumptions of spare parts and fast moying tools and failure to meet the market demand. In this regard the present work was conducted in a local production unit claimed to be the largest bi-cycle components manufacturer in the country. The objectives of the study were (i) to study and analyse of the existing production system,(ii) to suggest ways and means to overcome the weakness and- bottlenecks to increase efficiency and productivity, (iii) to examine the scope for import su bstitution of some spare parts, (iv) to optimize of machine utilization and maximizing profit through optimum product-mix_ of selected spare parts and (v) to investigate inj~ry occurance profiles and their preventions. It was revealed; as usually found in similar studies elsewhere in various production systems that no scientific methodology was applied to improve the overall productivity of the unit. From its inception, as found from the study, standards of production were not set properly. In conducting this 'study an analysis of the production system was done with an objective to identify the factors due to which productivity suffers. In this regard idle/unproductive man and machine has been ascertained _and ways have been suggested to remove the bottlenecks in the production system.Item Optimization of a cellular structure in flexible manufacturing system(Department of Industrial & Production Engineering, 1992-10-01) Ahmad, Munir Uddin; Rahman, Dr. Md. MizanurCellular manufacturing is considered to be an organizational approach for manufacturing parts with similar processing requirements in machine cells. Among the various approaches to the cell formation problem clustering techniques based on similrity index such as, the Single Linkage Clustering Algorithm, the Average Linkage Clustering Algorithm, the Weighted Linkage Clustering Algorithm are widely used. In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed for a cellular manufacturing structure. The model considers both the machines and parts similarity together to minimize the total cost of the system. The cost elements considered are tool cost, machine amortization cost and processing cost. The model is a binary linear program. The model has been solved using LP relaxation and a heuristic algorithm. The heuristic algorithm has been developed based on similarity index and it minimizes the total cost of the system. A few test problems are solved, using both the methods and the results are compared.
