    INFLUENCE OF VERMICOMPOST ON GROWTH, YIELD AND PROCESSING QUALITY OF POTATO VARIETIES

    A field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from November 01, 2014 to April 30, 2015 to find out the effect of 4 different vermicompost (Vm) levels viz., Vm 1 ), Vm 3 – (4 t ha -1 ) and Vm 4 – (6 t ha -1 1 - (control), Vm ) on growth, yield and quality of 4 potato varieties viz., V 1 -BARI TPS-1, V 2 - BARI Alu-28 (Lady Rosetta), V - BARI Alu-29 (Courage), V - BARI Alu-25 (Asterix). The experiment was conducted in spilt plot Design with 3 replications. The different levels of vermicompost had significant effect on most of the growth, yield and quality contributing parameters of potato irrespective of varieties. All parameters studied in this experiment were increased with the increasing vermicompost levels except water percentage. The variety „BARI Alu-28‟ produced maximum yield (28.89 t ha 4 -1 ) whereas, „BARI TPS-1‟ showed minimum yield (22.95 t ha -1 ) irrespective of vermicompost levels and other growth, yield and processing characters also influenced by the different varieties. The results also revealed that the yield of potato varieties were increased with increasing vermicompost levels. „BARI Alu-28‟ cultivated with vermicompost 6 t ha performed the best results and the same variety with 4 t ha -1 also showed the statistically similar results in terms of growth, most of the yield and quality parameters. Among the 16 treatment combination maximum tuber weight (57.18 g) was produced in V and the variety Lady Rosetta produced highest yield (33.86 t ha -1 ), highest marketable yield (28.78 t ha -1 ) and also produced maximum seed tuber (25.40 t ha ) when cultivated with 6 t ha -1 vermicompost.     EVALUATION OF HERBICIDAL EFFICACY AND RESIDUAL ACTIVITY ON DIRECT SEEDED BORO RICE

    An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, from November 2014 to April 2015 to evaluate the different herbicidal efficacy on weed control and growth & yield of boro rice cv. BRRI dhan50. The experiment comprised nine treatments viz. Acetachlor + Bensulfuran (Premix) @ 750 g ha -1 , Pyrazosulfuran-ethyl @ 150 g ha -1 , Bispyribac Sodium @ 150 g ha , Pretilachlor @ 1 L ha -1 , Pretilachlor+ Triasulfuran@ (1 L + 10 g) ha -1 , Propyrisulfuran + Propanil @ (0.5 L + 1 kg) ha -1 , Propyrisulfuran + Propanil@ (0.38 L + 1.5 kg) ha , Two hand weeding (20 and 40 DAS) and Weedy check.The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Sixteen weed species belonging to seven families were observed in the experimental field. Weed population, weed dry weight and weed control efficiency were significantly influenced by herbicidal treatments. The highest weed population and dry weight were observed in unweededcontrol condition compared to other treatments. Application of Propyrisulfuran + Propanil (0.38 L + 1.5 kg) ha -1 showed the best performance to control all kind of weeds found in the field and its residual activity remained upto 45 days.Yield contributing characters and yield of BRRI dhan50 was significantly influenced by weed control treatments. The highest number of effective tillers hill -1 , grains panicle , 1000grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index were obtained from the application of Propyrisulfuran + Propanil (0.38 L + 1.5 kg) ha -1 . Weed control had pronounced influence on yield (5.50 t ha -1 ) of BRRI dhan50 and 46.55% yield was lost in unweeded control condition. It can be concluded that application of Propyrisulfuran + Propanil (0.38 L + 1.5 kg) ha -1 may be used for the best performance of BRRI dhan50. However, in practical point of view the application of Propyrisulfuran+ Propanil (0.5 L + 1 kg) ha -1 may consider for producing second highest yield of BRRI dhan50. -1 -1 -1

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN LEVELS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND SEED QUALITY OF WHEAT

    A field experiment was conducted at the Research Field and Agronomy Laboratory of Shere-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka 1207 during the period from November, 2014 to March, 2015 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen levels on growth, yield and seed quality of wheat. The experiment comprised of five nitrogen levels viz. (i) N = Control (no nitrogen), (ii) N 1 = 25% less nitrogen from the recommended dose, (iii) N 2 0 = Recommended dose of nitrogen, (iv) N 3 = 25% higher nitrogen than recommended dose, (v) N = 50% higher nitrogen than recommended dose and four wheat varieties viz. (i) V 1 4 = BARI gom 21, (ii) V = BARI gom 23 (iii) V 3 = BARI gom 24 and (iv) V = BARI gom 27. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Data were collected on different parameters of growth, yield attributes, yield and seed quality of wheat. Results revealed that N 4 (25% higher nitrogen than recommended dose) gave the highest grain yield (3.41 t ha-1) which was statistically at par with N (recommended dose of nitrogen) (3.29 t ha-1). This might be attributed to highest number of spikes m 2 -2 (194.46), spike length (15.61 cm), number of spikelets spike -1 (20.91), number of grains spike -1 (48.17) and 1000-grain weight (47.08 g). Out of 4 varieties V 3 (BARI gom 24) showed highest grain yield (3.02 t ha ) which was statistically similar with V 4 (BARI gom 27) (2.89 t ha -1 -1 ). The variety BARI gom 27 (V ) also showed higher number of grains spike -1 (46.65) and 1000-grain weight (49.53 g). In respect of seed quality, N (recommended dose) showed higher quality of seed which was statistically similar to N 2 (25% higher nitrogen dose than recommended) because this nitrogen dose gave highest germination percentage (96.67 %), vigor index (10.34), shoot length (19.94cm) and dry weight seedling 3 -1 (0.19 g). In the case of variety, V (BARI gom 27) showed the higher seed quality attributes of germination percentage (95.20%), vigor index (10.52) shoot length (20.51cm) and dry weight seedling -1 (0.18 g). Regarding the interaction of nitrogen doses and varieties, N 2 V 3 , N 2 V 4 and N 3 V were shown best in producing quality seeds. From the above results it was concluded that the recommended dose and 25% higher nitrogen than recommended dose with BARI gom 27 shows better for producing higher yield and quality seed. 4 4 2 3 4

    EFFECT OF SEEDLINGS PER HILL ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE VARIETIES

    The experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period of July to November 2014 to find out the effect of seedlings hill -1 on yield and yield components of hybrid and inbred rice varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors. Factor A: Rice variety (2) designated as V 1 : Hybrid (Chamak); V 2 : Inbred (BRRI dhan62) and Factor B: Number of seedlings hill -1 (5 levels) named as S 1 : 1 seedling hill -1 , S 2 : 2 seedlings hill : 3 seedlings hill -1 , S 4 : 4 seedlings hill -1 and S 5 : 5 seedlings hill -1 . The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications. Experimental results showed that varieties had the significant effects on plant height, number of tillers hill , dry weight hill -1 , total tillers hill -1 , panicle length, number of filled and unfilled grains per panicle, 1000 seed weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index. The highest grain yield (4.06 t ha -1 ) was observed from Chamak (hybrid) while the BRRI dhan62 (Inbred) gave the lowest grain yield (3.04 t ha -1 -1 ). The highest straw yield was observed from V 1 (4.67 t ha -1 ) and the lower straw yield was recorded from V 2 (4.21 t ha ). Number of seedlings hill -1 also significantly affected all the parameters under study. The maximum number of effective tillers hill -1 was found from S 2 (12.20), whereas the minimum number of effective tillers hill -1 from S 5 (10.27). The highest grain yield was found from S 2 (4.10 t ha -1 ), whereas the lowest grain yield from S 5 -1 (2.93 t ha ). The highest straw yield was found from S 2 (4.80 t ha -1 ), whereas the lowest straw yield from S 5 (4.14 t ha -1 ) which was statistically similar to S 4 (4.21 t ha ). In case of interaction effect of varieties and number of seedlings hill -1 , the highest grain yield was recorded from the combination of V 1 S 2 (4.74 t ha -1 ) and the lowest grain yield was found from V 2 S 5 (2.55 t ha -1 ) which was statistically similar with V 2 (3.79 t ha -1 ).     GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT AS AFFECTED BY AMOUNT OF IRRIGATED WATER UNDER VARYING SOWING TIMES

    The experiment was conducted during the period from November 2014 to March 2015 in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to find out the effect ofamount of irrigated waterunder varying sowing times on growth and yield of wheat.The experiment comprised of two factors; Factors A: Irrigation (3 levels): I : Irrigation upto field capacity; I 2 : Irrigation upto 1/2 of field capacity and I : Irrigation upto1/4 th of field capacity(at crown root initiation, flowering and grain filling stage); Factor B: Sowing time (4 levels at 10 days interval): S 1 : Sowing at 10 November, 2014; S : Sowing at 20 November, 2014; S 3 : Sowing at 30 November, 2014and S : 10 December,2014. The experiment was laid out in Split Plot Design with three replications. Irrigation was assigned in the main plot and sowing date was assigned in the sub-plot.Irrigationupto fieldcapacity (I 1 ) recorded the highest plant height, tillers hill -1 4 and all yield contributing and yield parameters and the lowest in irrigation upto 1/4 th of field capacity (I ).November 20 sowing (S 2 ) produced the highest results than that of November10 sowing (S 3 ).Due to cumulative action of irrigation upto field capacity(I 1 ) and November 20 sowing (S 1 ) the combination effect (I 1 1 S 2 2 ) recorded the highest values in spike length(36.72cm),number of spikelets spike (17.60), number of grains spike -1 (54.13) , 1000 grain weight (55.15 g),grain yield (3.97 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.31 t ha -1 ) , biological yield (8.280 t ha -1 ) and harvest index(47.93%) respectively. Due to poor performance of individual treatment of irrigation upto 1/4 of capacity (I 3 ) and November 10 sowing time (S 1 ) the combination I 3 S recorded statistically the lowest grain yield (2.75 t ha -1 ), straw yield (3.17 t ha -1 1 3 2 ) , biological yield (5.92 t ha - ) and harvest index (46.42%). th 1 1 -

    GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF BARI TPS -I AS INFLUENCED BY NITROGEN AND VERMICOMPOST

    Nitrogen and vermicompost may affect the yield and quality (dry matter, specific gravity and TSS) of potato. In Bangladesh quality of potato is the main constraint for expansion of potato industry. To partially overcome this constraint an experiment was carried out in the research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November, 2013 to February, 2014 to find out the growth, yield and quality of BARI TPS-I as influenced by nitrogen and vermicompost. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The experiment comprised with two factors viz. (i) nitrogen dose and (ii) vermicompost level. Four nitrogen doses (N 0 = 0 kg N ha -1 , N 1 = 100 kg N ha -1 , N 2 = 150 kg N ha -1 , N 3 = 200 kg N ha ) and four vermicompost level (Vm 0 = 0 t ha -1 , Vm 1 = 5 t ha -1 , Vm 2 = 10 t ha = 15 t ha -1 ). Nitrogen dose was placed along the main plot and vermicompost level was placed along the sub plot. The data on crop growth parameters like days to emergence, plant height, leaves plant -1 , SPAD value of leaves and stem diameter were recorded at different growth stages. Yield and quality parameter of tuber were recorded after harvest. Results revealed that, different levels of nitrogen had significant effect on most of the growth, yield and quality contributing parameters of BARI TPS-I. The treatment N (150 kg N ha -1 ) produced maximum yield (26.70 t ha -1 ) whereas, N ) showed minimum yield (18.53 t ha -1 0 ). Vermicompost levels also had significant effect on most of the growth, yield and quality contributing parameters of BARI TPS-I. The results showed that most of the parameters were increased with the increasing vermicompost levels. The treatment Vm (15 t ha -1 ) produced maximum yield (26.03 t ha -1 ) which was statistically similar with Vm 2 (10 t ha -1 ) treatment whereas, Vm 0 -1 -1 , Vm 2 3 (0 kg N ha (0 t ha ) showed minimum yield (19.75 t ha -1 ).Treatment N 3 (200 kg N ha -1 -1 ) along with Vm (vermicompost 10 t ha -1 ) performed the best results in terms of growth, most of the yield and quality parameters. -1 3 2

    EFFECT OF SULPHUR AND BORON ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN VARIETIES

    The experiment was conducted during the period from March to June, 2014 at the research farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka to find out the effect of sulphur and boron on the growth and yield of mungbean varieties. The experiment comprised of two factors i.e. Factor A: Sulphur and boron (combination-4); F 1 = NPK, F 2 = NPK+S, F 3 = NPK+B and F = NPK+S+B; Factor B: Mungbean varieties-4; V 1 = BARI Mung-5, V 2 4 = BARI Mung-6, V = Binamoog-8 and V = BU Mung-4. The two factors experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Data on different growth and yield parameters were recorded and significant variation was recorded for different treatments. In case of sulphur and boron, the highest seed yield (1.69 t ha 4 ) was recorded from F 4, whereas the lowest (1.57 t ha -1 ) from F which may be occurred due to highest and lowest 1000-seed weight, number of pods plant 1 , number of seeds plant -1 . For different varieties of mungbean, the highest seed yield (1.79 t ha -1 ) was recorded from V 3 , while the lowest (1.33 t ha which may be occurred due to highest and lowest 1000-seed weight, number of pods plant -1 , number of seeds plant -1 . Due to the interaction effect of sulphur and boron combination and mungbean varieties, the highest seed yield (1.92 t ha ) was observed from the treatment combination of F 4 V , whereas the lowest (1.12 t ha -1 ) from F 4 V 4 2 which may be occurred due to highest and lowest 1000-seed weight, number of pods plant -1 , number of seeds plant -1 .     PRODUCTION OF QUALITY HYBRID TRUE POTATO SEED (TPS) AS INFLUENCED BY NITROGEN SPLITTING AND BORON

    Quality True Potato Seed (TPS) is the main bottleneck for the utilization and expansion of potato production through TPS technology in Bangladesh. Some plant nutrients viz., Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and Boron (B) may put contribution for the production of quality TPS. To partially solve this problem an experiment was conducted in research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from October, 2013 to April, 2014 to investigate the effect of split application of nitrogen (SN) and boron (B) on quality hybrid TPS. The TPS-67 (♂) and MF-II (♀) were used as male and female parent, respectively. The experiment consisted of two factors i.e., factor-A; nitrogen splitting (4 levels): SN = 2 split (conventional), SN 1 = 3 split, SN 2 = 4 split and SN = 5 split (SN); and factor-B; boron (4 levels): B 0 = 0 kg B ha -1 , B 1 = 4 kg B ha -1 , B 2 3 = 6 kg B ha -1 and B 3 0 = 8 kg B ha . The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications, whereas SN and B were treated as main plot and sub-plot, respectively. The nitrogen splitting and/or boron had significant effect on most of the parameters studied in this experiment. Results revealed that most of the growth, flowering, berry, TPS and quality traits significantly increased with increasing split application of N up to SN which was statistically similar to SN . Similar trends of above mentioned parameters were also found in B application. Among the 16 treatment combinations, significantly the highest yield of berries (t ha 2 -1 ) found in SN 2 B 0 3 (14.83 t) and the lowest from SN . The maximum yield of TPS was found from SN 1 B 3 (172.81 kg ha -1 ) and the minimum from SN 0 B 0 . The maximum weight of 100-TPS was found from SN (86.87 mg); whereas, the minimum from SN 0 B 0 . True potato seed produced from SN contained maximum protein (11.01 %), lipid (21.95 %) and also performed maximum germination (98.11 %), whereas the SN 0 B exhibited worst one. Though, the combination of SN 1 B 3 0 (3 split applications of N and 8 kg B ha 3 -1 ) produced the maximum TPS yield (172.81 kg ha -1 ) but, on the basis of quality parameters; 100-TPS weight (mg), protein (%), lipid (%) and (%) germination (%); SN and SN 2 B combinations showed statistical similar results.     EFFICACY AND RESIDUAL ACTIVITY OF HERBICIDE ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED AUS RICE

    ABSTRACT A field experiment was carried out at the Agronomy research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during April to August, 2014 in order to study the efficacy of herbicides to control weeds and its residual activity on growth and yield of transplanted aus rice, (Nerica). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications that consisted of 13 treatments viz. T 1 (Propyrisulfuron @ 500 ml ha ), T 2 (Propanil 60 WG @ 2000 g ha -1 ), T 3 (Propyrisulfuron @ 500 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 2000 g ha -1 ), T 4 (Propyrisulfuron @ 500 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @1500 g ha (Propyrisulfuron @ 380 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 2000 g ha -1 ), T (Propyrisulfuron @ 500 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG 1000 g ha -1 ), T 7 (Propyrisulfuron @ 250 ml ha 6 -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 2000 g ha -1 ), T 8 (Propyrisulfuron @ 380 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 1500 g ha (Propyrisulfuron @ 250 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @1000 g ha -1 ), T (Propyrisulfuron @ 500 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 667 g ha -1 ), T 11 10 (Propyrisulfuron @ 130 ml ha -1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 2000 g ha -1 ), T 12 (Acetochlor 14 % +Bensulfuron-methene 4% @ 742 g ha (Weedy check). Nineteen different weed species infested the field among which Marsilea quadrifolia and Cyperus difformis were dominanted throughout the growing period (45.25 % and 48.51 %, 42.24 % and 40.67 %, 47.06 % and 38.91%, 56.04 % and 32.59 %, 56.25 % and 32.45%, 57.83 % and 31.21 % at before 3 days of spray, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 45 days of spray, respectively). Results revealed that treatment T 8 (Propyrisulfuron @ 380 ml ha +Propanil 60 WG @ 1500 g ha -1 ) recorded the lowest weed population after 7, 14, 21, 28 and 45 DASP (days after spraying) while the highest weed population was recorded from the control treatment T 13 . The maximum tiller length (107.3 cm), total number of tillers hill (13.67), effective tillers hill -1 (11.33), total number of grains panicle -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 -1 ), T ), T ) and T -1 (69.0), filled grains panicle (64.33), 1000 grain weight (24.33 g), grain yield (3.81 t ha -1 ), straw yield (4.25 t ha ) and biological yield (8.06 t ha 1 +Propanil 60 WG @ 1500 g ha -1 ) was recorded from treatment T -1 ) whereas, T 13 8 (Propyrisulfuron @ 380 ml ha (Weedy check) recorded the lowest values in all cases except no. of non-effective tillers hill -1 and no. of sterile grains panicle . Considering rapid and residual activity as well as selectivity which is a common desire of the farmers, it appeared from the above results that treatment T 8 (Propyrisulfuron @ 380 ml ha +Propanil 60 WG @ 1500 g ha -1 ) performed better than other herbicidal treatments. -1 -1 -1 5 9 13 -1 -

    GROWTH AND YIELD RESPONSE OF MUNGBEAN TO THE APPLICATION OF NITROGEN AND BIOFERTILIZER

    An experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Dhaka to investigate the growth and yield response of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) as affected by nitrogen and biofertilizer management during the period from September to November, 2014. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Nitrogen fertilizer (4 levels); N 0 : No nitrogen (Control), N 1 : 20 kg N ha -1 as basal application, N : 20 kg N ha -1 at branching stage and N 3 : 20 kg N ha -1 at flowering stage, and factor B: Rhizobium inoculum (3 levels); R 0 : No Rhizobium (Control), R 1 : Rhizobium @ 5 kg ha and R 2 : Rhizobium @ 8 kg ha -1 . The variety, BARI Mung-6 was used in this experiment as the test crop. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications where levels of nitrogen were assigned in the main plot and doses of Rhizobium inoculum in the sub-plot. Plant height, leaf area plant -1 , dry weight plant , branches plant -1 , nodules plant -1 , pods plant -1 , pod length, seeds pod -1 , weight of 1000 seed, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index were tested under different treatments. Results revealed that, N 2 and R treatment influenced significantly on most of the growth, yield parameters and yield of mungbean. N 2 gave the higher yield (1.37 t ha -1 ) which was 77.92% higher than N 0 (0.77 t ha -1 2 ). Application of Rhizobium inoculums greatly influenced the seed yield and R 2 produced (1.28 t ha ) which was 28.00% higher than R 0 (1.00 t ha -1 ). The highest seed yield (1.69 t ha ) was recorded from the treatment combination of N 2 R 2 and the minimum (0.73 t ha ) was recorded from the interaction of N 0 R . The maximum yield might be attributed to higher pods plant -1 , seeds pod -1 1 and 1000-seeds weight. Application of 20 kg N ha -1 at branching stage as split and Rhizobium inoculums @ 8 kg ha -1 could be the best fertilizer and inoculum management for cultivation of mungbean for higher yield. -1 -1 -1 -1 2 -1
