Item IMMUNO-STIMULATORY EFFECT OF LEVAMISOLE HYDRO CHLORIDE AND TRICLABENDAZOLE ON THE IMMUNE RESPONSE OF PESTE DES PETITS RUMINANTS (PPR) VACCINATION IN GOATS(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) DHAR, NUPURItem ISOLATION, IDENTIFICATION & MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF Escherichia coli AND Salmonella spp. FROM FECAL MATERIALS OF POPULAR PET BIRDS(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) SEN, NIPURecently, rearing of pet birds have increased with the increased socio-economic condition of the citizen. These pets population may contribute many zoonotic bacteria to public health. Salmonella spp. and E. coli are considered as the most common zoonoses in the world, causing important losses to public health. Considering these significances, this study assessed the occurrence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in caged Pigeon, Budgerigar & Lovebird. A total of 45 fecal samples were collected as environmental sample from these 3 different species of birds from pet shops of Katabon, Dhaka. Twenty samples from Pigeon (P-1 to P-20), Fifteen samples from Budgerigar (B-1 to B-15) & Ten samples from Lovebird (L-1 to L-10) were collected. Birds with positive cases of E. coli were found 22 (48.8%) & positive cases of Salmonella spp. were found 8 (17.7%). Rest 15 (33.33%) samples were unidentified. The occurrence of E. coli were 7 (35%), 11 (73.33%) and 4 (40%) in case of pigeon, budgerigar and lovebird respectively. The occurrence of Salmonella spp. in pigeon was 40%. No isolates of Salmonella spp. were found in budgerigar & lovebird. The antibiotic study revealed that all the isolates of E. coli were 100% sensitive to Ciprofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Amikacin, Azithromycin & Gentamicin. All the isolates of E. coli were 100% resistant to Tetracyclin, Ampicillin & Colistin sulphate. All the isolates of Salmonella spp. were 100% susceptible to Amoxicillin, Amikacin & Gentamicin and showed 100% resistance to Tetracycline, Trimethoprim & Colistin sulphate. These results analyze that birds that were analyzed may carry and spread these enterobacteria, and preventive measures for human exposure should be determined, as these microorganisms are public health concerns.Item A CROSS SECTIONAL INVESTIGATION ON THE OCCURRENCE OF TREMATODE METACERCARIAE IN FRESH WATER CRAB, Sartoriana spinigera IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) AL - WASEFFreshwater crabs are distributed throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world that are consumed for the purposes of medical and tonic properties, including the treatment of stomach ailments and physical injuries. Sartoriana spinigera is an important edible freshwater crab species which play an important role as intermediate host of Microphallus indicus. It serves as biological vector for transmission of their infective stages to the final host namely herring gulls, shorebirds, ducks and rodents. We targeted to investigate the prevalence of lung fluke in Bangladesh because Paragonimus westermani, the lung fluke has been reported from Northeast India including Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal. During survey, the metacercariae of food borne trematodes were investigated from a total of 261 crabs collected from different geographies of Bangladesh. We could not recover any metacercaria of Paragonimus spp. from the examined crab. The metacercariae of M. indicus were recovered from the crabs screened in this study. The overall prevalence of M. indicus metacercariae was 26% with intensity of 1-63 per crab. The highest (83.33%) prevalence was recorded from Naogaon district, northern part of Bangladesh followed by Sirajgonj (57.5%), Rajshahi (40%), Brahmanbaria (16%), Narsingdi (15%), Faridpur (10%), and Sunamgonj (7%). None of the crabs collected from Rangpur, Thakurgoan, Jashore, Meherpur, Magura, Barguna, Sylhet, Kishorgonj, Cox’sBazar and Bandarban was found to be infected with any microphallid metacearia. Whereas, the highest number of infected crabs were found the in rivers (56%), followed by haor, canal and ditches (5%) and ponds (0%). To the best our knowledge, M. indicus is going to be reported for the first time from Bangladesh. Therefore, proper attention should be paid during consumption of crabs.Item ISOLATION, IDENTIFICATION & ANTIBIOGRAM OF BACTERIA ASSOCIATED WITH CAT ORAL CAVITY: A NEGLECTED ISSUE(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) AHMED, SHAMIMAThis research work was conducted to isolate, identify and antibiotic sensitivity profiling of bacteria found in oral cavity of pet cat in Dhaka city. A total number of 40 samples were collected aseptically from Central Veterinary Hospital (CVH), Dhaka and transported to National Institute of Biotechnology laboratory, Savar. Total viable count (TVC) of bacteria from all samples (n = 40) was determined. Hundred percent prevalence of organisms was noted with the highest TVC, 1.199×10 ii 13 and the lowest TVC, 3.60×10 2 . The isolation and identification of bacterial genera/species were performed by cultural characterist ics, Gram’s staining, biochemical tests and molecular identification to some extent. The prevalence of Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were 100%, 5 %, 57.5% and 7.5 % respectively. Both pathogenic and non-pathogenic E. coli were confirmed by PCR and DNA sequencing. Antibiotic sensitivity test by disc diffusion method was performed against seven different antibiotics. E. coli isolates showed the highest sensitive to gentamycin (80%) followed by azithromycin (70%) and the highest resistant to ampicillin. Isolates of Salmonella isolates were found to be highest sensitive against gentamycin (100%) followed by azithromycin (50%). Highest resistant pattern of Salmonella spp. was showed against ampicillin (100%). Salmonella spp. showed 50% resistant to erythromycin, streptomycin and tetracycline. S. aureus showed the highest sensitivity to gentamycin (80%), followed by cotrimoxazole (60%) and the highest resistance pattern was shown against ampicillin (100%), followed by erythromycin (80%) and tetracycline (60%). S. epidermidis showed the highest (100%) resistant against ampicillin and the highest (100%) sensitive to gentamycin. The findings from current study recommend that pet cats in Dhaka city contain multi-drug resistant E.coli, Salmonella spp., S. aureus. Only S. epidermidis was not found as multidrug resistant. This multi-drug resistant phenomenon can cause a potential public health hazard through transmission to humans by direct contact or the food chain or the evolved way of life.Item THE ROLE OF PERI-DOMESTIC RATS AS POTENTIAL RESERVOIR FOR ZOONOTIC PARASITES IN BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY, 2020) ADHIKARY, ANUP KUMARRats live around human habitat and they play as reservoirs and spread of many zoonotic parasites, responsible for public health problems. Total 87 (Male=58, Female=29) rats of 4 different species were captured live namely; Rattus norvegicus (24), R. rattus (5), Bandicota bengalensis (25), Mus musculus (33) from Dhaka (27), Bandarban (25), Naogaon (10), Meherpur (10), Thakurgaon (08) and Sylhet (07) districts of Bangladesh. All the rats were trapped alive by using ten (10) wire box bait traps with front spring door. Then, all the captured rats were put into a trolly bag and bought to the laboratory for enlisted the data, ectoparasites collection and dissection of rats for endoparasites collection. The overall prevalence of parasitic infection was 62.08%, in which 63.79% prevalence was found in male rats, and 58.62% was female rats. All the recovered parasites except the species Heterakis spumosa has public health significance. The prevalence of M. monliformis was the highest (21.11%), followed by G. neoplasticum (17.77%), T. taeniformis (12.22%) and H. diminuta (10%) and a single ectoparasite species Xenopsylla cheopis (31.03%). Thirty three out of 54 infected rats (61.11%) had mixed endoparasitic and ectoparasitic infection, and only 21 (38.89%) had single infection. The species Bandicota bengalensis (80%) had the highest infection followed by Rattus norvrgicus (79.17%), R. rattus (60%), Mus musculus (36.36%). In this study, the highest prevalence of parasites (endoparasites and ectoparasite) found of the examined rats in Naogaon were 90% followed by 71.43 % in Sylhet, 70.37% in Dhaka, 60% in Meherpur, 50% in Thakurgaon, 44% in the Bandarban The highest number of infected rats came from the houses in the slum areas, contributing to (75%), followed by local rent houses (72.22%), rice mill godwon (66.67%), stationary shops (62.50%), and paddy fields (33.33) and poultry shed ( 0%). Therefore, proper attention needs to be paid for the prevention of rat borne zoonosis through the control of rats.
