Item A geographical study on parking facilities of vehicles and traffic congestion in Dhaka city(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-22) Aktar, JafrinItem A Study on the Significance of Transport Sector on the Garments Industry in Dhaka City(University of Dhaka, 2019-10-10) Nahar, LutfunGarment industry has become the single largest source of foreign currency earning of Bangladesh only within a few decades. It has been contributing to the socio-economy of the country including expediting the wheel of economy, increasing trade volume, creating labour market for around four million people while around 80 percent of them are women. Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of RMG expanding its market to more than 100 countries. RMG industries have overcome several obstacles it encountered time to time. However, due to lack modernized infrastructure particularly in terms of communication and transport system it undergoes some challenges. This study has been undertaken to find out how transport sector is contributing to the development of RMG sector and expediting export and import of RMG as well as what are the challenges still exist in transport sector which can be addressed. In line with this, this study has targeted to identify the existing transport modes, the distribution pattern of raw material and finished goods, the costs the owners have to incur. Garment industries in Dhaka city have been identified for survey. In addition, buyers, buying organizations and other related stakeholders have also been consulted. The transport sector has been indeed one of the major factors for developing the garment industry. It affects the lead time in large extent. The exporters have to maintain the lead time- time from receiving order to shipment. In this case transport is essentially the major factor for movement of raw materials and supply of finished goods to the sea port within the agreed time. In addition, transport sector largely contributes to supply chain management. This study identifies how much a transport centered importproduction-export chain is important for stable development of the RMG industry.Item Advocacy or development an inquiry into the activities of environmental NGO's in Bangladesh(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-20) Raufe, Md. AbdurItem Advocacy or Development? An Inquiry into the Activities of Environmental NGO’s in Bangladesh(© University of Dhaka, 2025-09-01) Raufe, Md. AbdurThe present study was undertaken to find out the role of environmental NGOs on advocacy or development in different areas of Bangladesh. A total of 61 environmental NGOs were selected from four different geographical regions like north bengal, south-west part, coastal areas and central Dhaka. Field survey was conductcd to establish the study and surveyed on NGOs key personnel and different professionals. From the result, it was found that from 61 NGOs, most of them initially establish as development organization but 55 NGOs changed their views and now working as environment sectors. From the result, it was found that out of 61 NGOs, 36 NGOs collect fund from internal sources and 25 are collect fund from external sources and 40 NGOs are involved to spend money as bribe for funding. For advocacy, the NGOs are involved on environment and development of people like climate change, water contamination, social corruption, women torturing, early marriage and population increasing. NGOs are using media, seminar, rally, poster display to support the advocacy. The NGOs fire also doing the awareness of the people on various environmental acts by the ministry of environment and forest, GoB. 56 NGOs deals with health, fisheries and population, 49 deals with plantation and sanitation. However, 53 NGOs are working on both environment and development, only 4 NGOs are working for environment and 4 are working for only development. After advocacy it was also revealed from the study that out of 61 NGOs, 38 and 49 organizations have the good relations with government and donor agency respectively. From the study it could conclude that all the NGOs of different regions of Bangladesh are involved on both development and advocacy but they are working on mostly development rather than advocacy which is key issue in developing country like BangladeshItem AMBIGUITIES OF MASCULINITY AFTER RIVER BANK EROSION DISPLACEMENT: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY ON PERCEPTION AND EXPERIENCE OF DISPLACED MALE SLUM DWELLERS IN DHAKA CITY(©University of Dhaka, 2022-05-16) DEY, ANTORABangladesh is a riverine country and millions of people are displaced from their place of origin due to effect of riverbank erosion. This is one of the most endemic natural hazards in Bangladesh, which caused millions of people homeless, landless, and property less. In this consequence, ill-fated erosion victims are bound to displace from their origin place, and move to urban areas mainly in slums for maintaining and sustaining their livelihood. Study explored the perception and experience of erosion displaced male slum dwellers‟ in Dhaka city. Importantly, study also selected the Barisal city slums for finding a comparison between the largest and centrally located urban area, with a coastal urban place erosion displaced male slum dwellers‟ perception. Mainly, study is pointed-out that, how geographical variation impacted on traditional patriarchal male psychology due to erosion displacement shifting roles and responsibility in family. For this reason, study has selected the Dhaka city slums at large as well as Barisal city slums to conduct the research. Men and women experience and cope-up differently with the riverbank erosion displaced situation. Moreover, because of erosion induced displacement from the homeland, as household head men face multifarious difficulties to perform his traditional roles and responsibilities towards his family members. Since, men and women both are integral part of a family, it is necessary to engage men along with women in social policy formulation to eradicate the traditional gender division of labor in family. This study provides valuable lights on gender-based crisis mainly in terms of focusing its changed male roles and responsibilities after riverbank erosion displacement period. This research has assessed, the perception of men about the shifting gender roles and responsibilities after displaced in Dhaka and Barisal city slum areas. Study has investigated the coping mechanism of displaced men and women experience over exchanged gender division of labor that, create ambiguity with the traditional patriarchal norms and regulations in family. Regarding, in effect of recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of masculinity after displacement period. In this connection, study has revealed that although, after displacement shifting gender roles and responsibilities impacted on male psychological point of view in effect of established patriarchal male attributes. But, in Dhaka city erosion displaced males‟ cope-up and adjustment mechanism strategy is found satisfactory level, contrast with Barisal city displaced male slum dwellers. Finally, this study finding illustrates that, reform masculine attributes influence over the male construction on patriarchal social structure, and which make them bound to endure with the shifting roles and responsibilities for maintaining a sustainable livelihood after erosion induced displacement phase.Item Analysis of resettlement and socio-economic condition of the affected(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-22) Begum, HelenaItem Assessment of environmental quality a comparative analysis of urban and rural(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-22) Rahman, Md. MahaburarItem Causes and Consequences of Perennial Water Logging in the Life and Livelihood at Rajnagar Bankabarsi in Jashore District, Bangladesh(©University of Dhaka, 2022-02-23) Nesa, MaharunWater logging has turned out to be one of the major environmental global issues, and Bangladesh seems to be one of the worst sufferers. Especially, the south western part of the country experiencing the problems of water logging since 1980s. The situation really compounded with the construction of polders under the Coastal Embankment Project (CEP). The present study has been conducted to investigate the causes and impacts of water logging on people’s life and livelihood in village Rajnagar Bankabarsi of Jashore district. The study is heavily based on primary sources of data. Such endeavor has been carried out through all the standard data collection procedures (questionnaire survey, FGD and KII methods). The data are than analyzed in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. However, the secondary data have been collected from Local Upazila Agricultural Office, Union Land Office and different literatures. Quantitative data processing and analysis are carried out by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS 20.0. Study area map has been prepared through ESRI ArcGIS (Arc Info 10.3) using the satellite image from Google Earth Pro. The study attempted to analyze the spatial spread of water logging over time. Temporal variation of water logging in the study area has been presented through GIS and Remote Sensing techniques. In order to illustrate the socio-economic sphere, the study conducted questionnaire survey. Two hundred and seventy-five sample sizes have been determined for this study. Households have been surveyed for data through questionnaire survey. Comparative assessment of different variables depending on different period of time is the most significant part of this research. Study findings indicated that the study area experienced severe prolonged water logging; about 65 percent respondent opined that water logging continued almost 4 months in a year for many years making the life more vulnerable. More than half (51%) of the respondents indicated the rising river bed as the main cause of water logging. Few FGD participants blamed ‘Gher’ as the major cause for the water logging in the study area. So, it can be said that Water logging is a combined effect of different issues in the study area. From the comparative assessment it has been found, there is an increase of pacca and semi-pacca type of houses in the study area. Field data also found changes in the livelihood pattern. Income group analysis through Gini-coefficient found that the disparity of income increases with time indicating poor people are the main victim of the disaster as they cannot adjust with the changed environment after water logging. The local people adopted themselves with different types of homesteads level and in agricultural sector to adjust with the changed physical condition. In agricultural sector the impact was found only in the minimization of the duration of agricultural activities but crop production increased with time after water logging for applying effective adaptation mechanism. The present study has amply portrayed the prolonged sufferings of the poor families in the study area. The sufferings are so impending that an immediate measures from the government and NGOs are called upon. The neighboring areas of the study area has a record of bumper crops and this reality aspired the people who has been suffering. In a large scale, the water logging calamities brought curse for the majority of the people, but some people were able to achieve a better quality of life through different means. In light of these some measures are pointed for he distressed people as way forward.Item Causes and Consequences of Perennial Water Logging in the Life and Livelihood at Rajnagar Bankabarsi in Jashore District, Bangladesh(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-21) Nesa, MaharunItem Characteristics of affluent discharges at selected location of Dhaka city(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-21) Alam, Md. Urban environmental information plays a crucial role for urban development, which helps city dwellers be aware of city environment and policymakers take right policies. So, understanding the patterns and processes of urban environment is a key to make information available to city dwellers. Thus, this study aims to understand the patterns and process of unban environmental information of Dhaka city. The household survey adopted for this study reveals an overview of the present status of urban environmental information dissemination while qualitative survey has explored the patterns and processes of urban environmental information of Dhaka city. Both the qualitative and quantitative surveys find that there is no integrated system in Dhaka city to disseminate urban environment information to the city dwellers. The ineffective urban environmental information dissemination is restricting the planned urban development and accelerating sufferings of city dwellers. Urban environmental information is being disseminated in the city in a haphazard manner. There is no central organisation, which collects urban environmental information. Access to urban environmental information is very crucial in coping with the environmental problems. But, Dhaka city experiences show that city dwellers have a little access to urban environmental information for lack of a proper dissemination system. The qualitative survey finds lack of coordination and the negligence of the authorities concerned are found to be the main underlying causes behind poor dissemination of urban environmental information. Although around 54 government bodies are involved in urban governance, they have no coordination at all. There is also poor governance in environmental information dissemination like other sectors in Dhaka city, which makes the city dwellers’ lives miserable. Media always play a vital role in disseminating urban environmental information and city dwellers are highly dependent on media to get urban environmental information. During the household survey, about 89.7 percent of respondents found media’s involvement in urban environmental information and think that media should play better role in this regard. The key reasons, which contribute to poor dissemination of urban environmental information, and the patterns and processes of the information, are analysed to suggest steps and policy guidelines towards introduction of an urban environmental information system for Dhaka city.Item Crime in Bangladesh a geographic study(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-22) Mohammad, MostaqItem Decentralizing urbanization in Bangladesh Exploring the impact of micro-credit in reducing Rural-Urban migration(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-20) Aynee, Malihatu QurratuItem Decentralizing Urbanization in Bangladesh: Exploring the Impact of Micro-Credit in Reducing Rural-Urban Migration(University of Dhaka, 2019-10-17) Aynee, Malihatu QurratuThe nature and characteristics of urbanization has remained similar to the pattern during the British period despite the growth in the urban population (CUS, 1976). The most phenomenal urban population growth in Bangladesh occurred during the 1961-74 inter-census period. Over 6 million people were living in urban areas constituting roughly 8.0% of the total population (BBS, 1987). That accelerated growth is to a great extent the result of the very recent influx from rural villages. The growth rate of the urban population was 5.4% during the 1981-1991 (BBS, 1997). The total population increased to 28.6 million by 2001(BBS, 2003). Bangladesh is over populated country in the world. Every day a lot of rural people come to urban area for many reasons. It is considered as a behavioral attribute that reflects the dedication of the people of origin and destination to reach. Rural-urban migration currently becomes a common fact and the situation is not in control. For this, development in decentralization in Bangladesh is advocated along with the need for planning development activities at local levels. For local levels development activities we need to focus on NGOs activities in rural area. The NGOs, in order to support social and economic empowerment of the poor, have vastly widened their activities to include group formation, to introduce micro credit, to conduct formal and non-formal education, training, to work on health and nutrition, family planning and welfare, agriculture and related activities, water supply and sanitation, to work on human rights and advocacy, to provide legal aid and other areas. These organizations mostly follow the target-group strategy under which the poor with similar socioeconomic interests are to achieve their objectives. This concluded the research and discussed briefly the objective phrase of “Decentralizing Urbanization in Bangladesh: Exploring the impact of micro-credit in reducing rural-urban migration” in the light of our findings from village surveys. To fulfill the purposes of the research will be facing some of the questions and queries. These queries are expected to be fulfilled as soon as the completion of the research objectives. Therefore, the research content, purpose, and ask if these factors, it is logical for the recent period, the research process. Many techniques are used to complete the study. The following strategies and objectives of our research were used to collect data for primary stage. Through this survey we find that, these two villages was match with our objectives. Here we discuss about their social and economic activities and conditions. In these two villages maximum households are involved with NGO activities. Our survey report says that all of 200 respondents of these villages take loans from NGOs. The reasearch result brings about the light of information that for activities of different NGOs, still people do not need to move out to the cities for their living, rather they find everything inside their locality by doing something somehow and enjoying economic development and so. Since both villages have good highways and road to travel cities by bus, people can easily manage traveling back and forth. The picture we see about the migration here is somehow similar to seasonal migration and circular migration category. Otherwise, no other kind of migration is seen here, usually. This way our research objectives became fulfilled and successful by thorough analyses and discussions clearly presented in this thesis.Item Degrading forest environment and local Garo females in Modhupur Garh, Bangladesh(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-20) Dey, SomaItem Environmental Quality of Savar Pourasava: A Geographical Analysis(University of Dhaka, 2020-10-25) Tahera Dil, AfrozThe study aims at identifying the overall environmental quality of Savar Pourasava. Different types of environmental pollution are recognized along with their major causes and levels of severity. With the increasing amount of urban sprawl of Dhaka in recent years, the peripheral cities around Dhaka are increasingly becoming urbanization and industrialization hotspots. There is however a deterioration of overall environmental quality accompanied with the fast development. The overall quality of air, water, soil and also the sound level were also assessed as part of the study. The study tried to recognize the major parameters of environmental quality by assessing their causes and assessing the level of severity. The spatial distribution of severity of these parameters was also recognized as part of the findings. The overall methodology followed a series of steps including both collection of primary and secondary data. Primary data collection was conducted by a detailed questionnaire survey to assess the levels of severity, the types of pollutions and their associated environmental impacts. A sample size of 267 questionnaire surveys was estimated keeping a 95% confidence limit and error of 6%. Land use change analysis between 1981 to 2017 was generated using satellite image classification. Spatial analysis of severity was conducted using two separate weighted overlay techniques, firstly using equal weights for all pollutions and secondly using weight according to the causal factors of pollution. Major results of the study may be summarized as follows. From spatial analysis of severity, it is seen that ward numbers 1, 6 and 9 are most susceptible to pollution with severity levels of 4 in a 1 to 5 scale, that indicates that these wards have high levels of severity. The overall distribution shows that the wards that are on the peripheral area of the Pourasava have higher levels of pollution. From Land use change analysis it is seen that both the amounts of vegetation and water in the area has decreased by 35% and 23% respectively between 1981 and 2017. Therefore, the study first identified the environmental problem and then further identified the particular environmental problems in details.According to the assessment of people’s perception, the level of water, air, sound and soil pollutions is increasing in the Pourasava. Disposal of solid waste, chemical disposals and also leakages in sewerage lines have been identified as key causes of water pollution. Open incineration and solid waste disposal are identified to be key reasons for air pollution. Faulty vehicles and hydraulic horns contribute most to sound pollution. Land fill sites are identified to cause the greatest amounts of soil pollution. Detergent production industries and dyeing industries are identified as causing the maximum pollution from industries. The study shall help with ward-level plans for promoting sustainable development in Savar Pourasava.Item Fertility pattern and family planning practice : among married working and non-working women in two selected areas of Dhaka city(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-20) Jahan, AkhtarItem Fire hazard vulnerability mapping a case of Dhaka metropolitan area(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-21) nath, Ram krishnaItem Flood hazards in Bangladesh vulnerability and human adjustment(© University of Dhaka, 2025-05-22) Islam, Md.
